Who We Recommend The Tuft & Needle Mint For:
- Couples and co-sleepers – The extra edge support in the bottom layer makes the bed feel larger, which allows you and your partner to use the whole surface. If you’re sharing your bed with kids or pets – or if your partner is a restless sleeper – this bed’s motion-isolating abilities should also help limit unwanted disturbance.
- Deal seekers – From the ultra-plush cover to the specially constructed graphite and copper-infused foam, this product was made for those who enjoy a touch of luxury at a fair price.
- Combination sleepers – The top layer of foam offers a soft, comforting feeling on your joints, while the quick responsiveness allows for easy adjustment throughout the night.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Tuft & Needle Mint For:
- Stomach sleepers – Most stomach sleepers who weigh over 130 pounds are likely to find the Mint mattress too soft to support their hips. Your hips are the heaviest when you sleep on your stomach, in which case you need firmer support to prevent them from sinking too deeply into the mattress.
- Heavy people – Heavy people may experience this bed as softer, which can be an issue for those who weigh over 230 pounds. Back sleepers who prefer a soft bed might still like the Mint mattress, but most heavy sleepers are likely to do better with a firmer mattress.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 5.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. This way, it’s easier for sleepers to understand how firm or soft a certain mattress is. The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress falls around a 5.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This feel is described as medium-plush to medium-firm, depending on the sleeper’s exact weight and preferred sleeping position.
This mid-range firmness should work for most people, but especially lightweight to average-weight side and back sleepers. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, are likely to prefer a firmer bed.
How Does It Feel?
The design and craftsmanship of the Tuft & Needle Mint feels luxurious and well-made, starting with its knit, stretchy cover. As you press further down, you should feel the foam conform to your hand but pop back up quickly when you release it. This foam should feel slightly different than traditional memory foam because of the quick response, but the bed should still contour well the way a traditional memory foam mattress would.
What We Like About the Tuft & Needle Mint
- Washable cover – The Mint mattress comes with a zip-off cover you can remove in a second. This makes it easy to wash and keep clean for as long as you have the mattress.
- Cooling – Although this is an all-foam mattress, it has multiple cooling features that keep it cool and comfortable for hot sleepers.
- Excellent motion isolation – Much like most all-foam mattresses, the Mint has excellent motion isolation that doesn’t allow any movement to transfer from one side of the bed to the other.
Our Tuft & Needle Mint Complaints
- It doesn’t have a classic innerspring feel – While the innovative foam should provide comfortable pressure relief and isolated motion, you won’t feel the same level of bounce and push back that you would on a traditional spring mattress. If that’s more your thing, check out the company’s new hybrid mattress.
- It may not feel firm enough – Though the product has substantial pressure-relieving features, stomach sleepers and those who weigh heavier could find its medium-plush to medium-firm feel still not firm enough for their individual needs. Fortunately, the company provides a generous 100-night trial period for you to determine whether it’s right for you.
Testing the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress: How it Performed
We tested the Mint mattress to figure out how it performs in different sleeping positions. Although it has a mid-range firmness that should work for most people, the mattress performed somewhat differently in each position. On top of that, we also tested it for edge support, motion isolation, bounce, and several other preference-based features to help you figure out if this is the right bed for your needs.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Tuft & Needle, the Mint mattress can carry up to 500 pounds per side, which is 1,000 pounds in total. Though this is a higher weight capacity, the Mint’s firmness level may still feel too soft for those on the heavier side.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should feel enough sinkage due to the bed’s medium-plush feel. The T&N Adaptive® Foam contours the curves without making you feel trapped in the mattress.
- Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers may feel more sinkage in the shoulder and hip area, but the mattress should still provide enough support to keep the body aligned.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Side sleepers weighing over 230 pounds may do better with a firmer bed because the Mint mattress is likely too soft to keep the hips and shoulders aligned in this position.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers should like how the Mint feels in the lower back area. The mattress allows enough sinkage for pressure relief without letting you sink too deeply.
- Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers may experience a deeper hug, but they should also get enough support to keep the spine straight. Those closer to 230 pounds may like a firmer surface.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers may find the Mint too soft to keep the lower back aligned with the rest of the body.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers weighing under 130 should feel a nice level of pressure relief and support because they don’t weigh enough to sink deep enough to throw the spine out of alignment.
- Average-weight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 to 230 pounds will likely experience this bed differently depending on their exact weight. However, most are likely to find it too soft to keep the hips on top of the comfort layer.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – The Mint mattress has a medium-plush to medium-firm feel, but this is likely to be too soft for most stomach sleepers weighing over 230 pounds.
Pressure Relief 4/5
The Mint is on the softer side, so it should allow you to sink in, almost as if the foams are giving you a deep hug. The upper layers provide plushness that should fill in all the gaps and conform around the body. Plus, the quick-response foam adds a bit of bounce, making it easier to change positions and get out of bed. The only reason we deducted a point here is because the Tuft & Needle Mint isn’t equipped with actual memory foam, which may enhance pressure relief on this bed even more.
Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Good for Pain Relief?
Back Pain – Back pain can be difficult to fall asleep with, so it’s best to have a mattress that can provide enough support to keep the spine straight. The Mint mattress has a mid-range firmness, so it should do a good job of supporting most sleepers in a healthy sleeping position. In addition, the upper T&N Adaptive® foam should also contour the lower back to further help relieve pain in this area.
Hip Pain – The Mint mattress should do a good job of relieving hip pain as it feels softer in the areas that are more prone to pressure. If you’re a side sleeper with hip pain, you should experience a nice contouring and a bit of sinkage in this area that helps relieve some pain while keeping you in a healthy sleep posture.
Shoulder Pain – Sleepers with shoulder pain should like the firmness and feel of the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress because it adapts to your body and cradles your curves in various positions. Its mid-range firmness should feel good on your shoulder as it allows enough contouring for side sleeping and support for back sleeping.
Support 4/5
For durability and comfort, you’re going to need a mattress with exceptional support. This assures that your spine stays straight all night long so that you won’t feel any strain or soreness.
The Mint is rooted in a gradual firmness level, which means the more you push down, the more supported you should feel. The hefty 7-inch high-density base layer is designed to provide comfort and evenly-distributed support on your joints. It has a pretty neutral feel, so most sleepers should get the support they need from this mattress, although those on the heavier side might need something more firm to hold them up a bit better, which is why it got a 4 here instead of a 5.
Motion Isolation 4.5/5
Motion isolation is always worth considering, but more so if you’re a light sleeper sharing a mattress with a restless sleeper, a child, or your pet. A mattress with good motion isolation should prevent movement from transferring from one side to the other.
Most all-foam mattresses are good at motion isolation, and the Mint is no exception. The mattress has three foam layers all of which play an important role in preventing movement transfer. Although this bed has a bit of a bounce, the upper foam layer should absorb most of the movement so that you don’t feel your partner tossing and turning. We only took off half a point here because that slight bounce might make you feel just a little bit of motion.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling 4/5
All-foam mattresses are usually prone to overheating, but Tuft & Needle went the extra mile to ensure this doesn’t happen with the Mint. The first layer, made from T&N Adaptive® foam, has an open-cell structure that allows more airflow than traditional memory foam. In addition, this layer is infused with graphite and cooling gel to help dissipate your body heat. This way, heat shouldn’t accumulate around your body.
The second layer of T&N Adaptive® foam has ceramic infusions and cooling gel to further promote airflow and heat dissipation, ensuring the Mint mattress stays cool and breathable. While these cooling features should be a big help for hot sleepers, we still only gave it a 4 here because its all-foam construction won’t leave it as cool as a bed with any innerspring unit since the coils help with airflow.
Performance for Couples 4/5
Not only are the foams in this bed good at isolating motion so you don’t feel your partner tossing and turning, but there’s also a reinforced perimeter for extra edge support. This allows couples to use the entire surface of the bed. In addition, the bed can carry a total of 1,000 pounds which is more than enough for two people.
Although the Mint bed isn’t as bouncy as some innerspring mattresses, it still has some bounce that sexually active couples should appreciate. The reason it got a 4 rather than 5 here is only because the softer firmness might not work both partners. Instead, something more of a true medium-firm (6 or 6.5 firmness rating) is often better for couples.

Preference-based Features
Bed-in-a-Box Shipping
It couldn’t be more convenient to ship this bed – the Mint comes rolled up in a box, ready to open at your convenience. No waiting for the delivery window or taking time off of work.
Proprietary Materials
The Tuft & Needle Mint isn’t your typical memory foam bed. The company created a proprietary foam called Adaptive® foam, which has an open-cell structure to allow more airflow and breathability than what you’d get from conventional memory foam.
Adjustable Base Compatible
Feel free to use an adjustable base with T&N Mint. They even have their own adjustable frame that is built specifically for their beds if you’re in the market, but any frame should do.
Handcrafted in the USA
Construction: What’s Inside the Mint?
Starting from the outside, the cover is a thicker, charcoal knit material that surrounds this mattress while still providing breathability and protection from microbes. The cover also has a zipper that allows you to remove it for easy washing.
At 11.5 inches tall, the Mint is composed of three layers with the softest on the top, a transition layer sandwiched in the middle, and a supportive base layer on the bottom.
- The comfort layer is 3 inches of T&N Adaptive® foam infused with 30 percent more graphite than the Original Mattress, which helps prevent overheating. This top layer responds quickly, unlike traditional memory foam, and provides pressure relief and cushioning.
- The transition layer is 2 inches of the same T&N Adaptive® foam, but with upgraded ceramic cooling gel beads that wick away heat and add more support. This layer is slightly firmer than the first to enhance support and prevent you from bottoming out to the base layer.
- The base layer is 6.5 inches of high-density foam. Using open-cell technology, this layer is equally breathable and allows airflow. This base layer is the firmest of the three and is surrounded by 4 inches of extra firm foam around the edges for added support.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress comes in a box, so it’s fairly simple to carry from your front door to the bedroom. The box can be a bit heavy, so make sure to have someone help you put it on your bed foundation of choice. If you don’t want to do any work, you can opt for white glove delivery, which costs an additional 150 dollars.
Even without white glove delivery, setting up the Mint mattress should be simple enough. All you have to do is place it on your foundation of choice before removing the plastic packaging. Once it’s out of the wrapping, the mattress starts to unroll and decompress. This should last anywhere between 24 and 48 hours. Any off-gassing odors you may notice should also dissipate by the time the mattress decompresses.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Mint’s lifespan?
The Mint mattress should last anywhere between 8 to 10 years. Although the mattress comes with a 10-year warranty on materials and manufacturing, you’re advised to replace the bed after 8 years for hygienic reasons.
Is the Mint flippable?
The Mint isn’t a flippable mattress. The layers in this bed are carefully stacked to perform a certain way, delivering balanced levels of support and pressure relief. Flipping it would mess up the order of the layers and their performance.
What is the firmness rating of Tuft & Needle Mint?
We rated the Mint a 5.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it should feel medium-plush to medium firm, depending on the sleeper’s weight. Heavier people are likely to experience it as softer.

Our Verdict
After testing the Mint by Tuft & Needle, we think it’s a great choice for back and side sleepers, especially lightweight and average-weight ones. Co-sleepers should also like how the mattress absorbs movement and has reinforced edges so you can use the entire surface.
Although it may not be the best option for stomach sleepers and heavy people, the Tuft and Needle Mint is a versatile option for those who weigh under 230 pounds. The Adaptive® foam follows your curves, allowing a gentle contour around the most sensitive areas. This foam also sleeps coolers, so hot sleepers who’ve been wanting to try an all-foam bed should like this option by Tuft & Needle.
