First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

This mattress is available in Soft, Medium, and Firm options, allowing you to choose based on what fits your sleeping needs the best. There’s also an option to order a bed without the pillow top, but then you can only go for the Medium model as the other two aren’t available.
We tested the Medium model with a pillow top, rating it between 6.5 and 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. The coils offer solid support, while the pillow top provides enough cushioning for pressure relief in the shoulder, hip, and lower back areas.
How Does It Feel?
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress combines a range of features such as the Tempur-Indulge™ pillow top and Intellicoil™ HD coils. We feel the mattress offers excellent pressure relief as it allows just enough sinkage and contouring within the pillow top.
However, you’re unlikely to sink too deeply into the mattress as the coils keep your body aligned. The Tencel™ cover and silver air vents prevent the air and heat from staying trapped inside the bed, so it feels fresh and cooling.

Our team found that this mattress excels in pressure relief. It features a pillow top made from TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam. The foam has a cloud-like feel, allowing just enough sinkage to hug your hips, knees, and shoulders in various positions, providing optimal pressure relief.
Although different sleepers would feel different sinkage levels, depending on their body weight and preferred sleeping position, we think the pillow top is a nice touch and should feel comfortable to most people.
Back Pain – People with back pain should feel nicely supported by the IntelliCoil® springs sitting under the pillow top. The coils give this bed a sturdy feel, offering plenty of support to keep the body aligned in various sleeping positions. When you lie on the mattress, you should feel your body sinking into the pillow top. However, the sturdy coils underneath, paired with the bed’s overall medium feel, won’t allow you to bottom out. Instead, you should feel well-supported by its 16-inch construction that helps keep your body aligned and in a healthy position regardless of whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach.

Motion transfer, or motion isolation as we sometimes refer to it, is a big factor to consider when buying a mattress, especially if you’re co-sleeping. This bed, although it has a plush pillow top, has excellent motion-isolating capabilities. We tested this by placing a water bottle on one side of the bed and throwing a weight on the other. The bottle didn’t move, which leads us to believe most movement would be absorbed by the mattress, making it a good option for partners with different sleeping habits.

The Lux Estate is available with or without the pillow top. If you want the one without a pillow top, keep in mind it only comes in Medium and is 14.5 inches tall. The construction starts with a stretch-knit Tencel™ cover, perfect for hot sleepers. This cooling cover is designed to wick away moisture and keep the bed’s surface cool throughout the night.
- The pillow top comes right under the cover, and it almost looks like a separate part of the bed. This cushioning layer is made from TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam to provide additional comfort and support.
