Silk & Snow was founded in Canada in 2017 by two long-time friends who wanted to create mattresses that not only gave a good night’s sleep but used high-quality materials with sustainable manufacturing and a transparent supply chain.
The Silk & Snow Organic is the company’s only organic mattress, featuring certified natural and organic materials, and while it’s the most expensive of the three S&S mattresses, it’s still a good value. This is one of the most eco-friendly mattresses on the market, so if you’re on the hunt for a green purchase, read on to see if the Silk & Snow Organic could be a good match for you.

Who We Recommend The Silk & Snow Organic For:
- Back sleepers – The medium-firm feel of this mattress should be ideal for back sleepers in all positions, with the coil unit offering zoned support for healthy spine alignment. This is combined with comfortable cushioning for pressure relief.
- Eco-conscious consumers – With its certified organic and natural materials, the Silk & Snow Organic is a great choice for those looking to help the planet; you won’t find any synthetics in this mattress.
- Lightweight stomach and back sleepers – Lighter people under 130 pounds should experience good cushioning and support when sleeping on their back, and nice, firm support when on their front, which should keep the hips elevated and the spine in healthy alignment.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Silk & Snow Organic For:
- Light to average-weight side sleepers – People weighing less than 230 pounds will likely find this mattress too firm, preventing them from getting the necessary pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. In this case, a well-made softer mattress would be better.
- Memory foam fans – Those who love that ‘in the bed’ feel of memory foam may not like this hybrid, which offers gentle contouring but doesn’t have the deep sinkage of traditional memory foam.
- Vegans – Vegan shoppers looking for a green mattress should steer clear of the Silk & Snow Organic because it contains wool. If you’re looking for an affordable animal-free latex hybrid, check out the Avocado mattress, which can be made without wool.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6.5/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Firmness is important to consider when buying a new bed, and we rate mattresses on a firmness scale that ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. The Silk & Snow Organic falls at 6.5 out of 10, which is the industry standard for medium-firm.
This can be a great compromise for couples who can’t agree on a firmness preference and don’t want to spend extra money on a split bed. A medium-firm bed is also more accommodating to combination sleepers, who rotate between positions and need something versatile.
How Does It Feel?
With its combination of cotton, New Zealand wool, natural latex, and pocketed steel coils, the Silk & Snow Organic feels soft to the touch and a little bouncy. Roll around on the bed and you should feel the bed responding to your movements, which should make changing positions during the night an easier process. Those with limited mobility could also appreciate the slightly bouncy feel, as it shouldn’t leave these sleepers feeling stuck in the bed.
What We Like About the Silk & Snow Organic
- Affordability – Eco-friendly beds often come at a higher price, but the Silk & Snow Organic is a pleasantly affordable option, allowing people with all budgets to do their bit for the planet.
- Durability – This bed contains a layer of Dunlop latex, which is known for its ability to stay responsive and firm for much longer than other materials, such as memory foam. As a result, you should get more long-term use out of the product.
- Made in Canada – Silk & Snow has cared about the transparency of their supply chain since the company’s inception in 2017, and you can rest assured that all of their mattresses are made by local Canadian companies.
Our Silk & Snow Organic Complaints
- No white glove delivery – White glove delivery is only offered to Toronto residents, which may be an issue for those who live alone and need extra help setting up their new bed.
- Not great for stomach sleeping – Unless you weigh under 130 pounds, you’re likely to feel your hips sinking too much if you spend most of the night on your front, which can result in poor spine alignment.
Testing the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress: How it Performed
We rigorously test every mattress we review to give you the best idea of whether it could be a good purchase for you. Factors like motion transfer, edge support, responsiveness, cooling, overall support, and pressure relief are all taken into account. In addition, we lie in different sleep positions to ensure we have a thorough understanding of how comfortable the bed is in each posture.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
Silk & Snow states that there’s no official weight limit for their Organic mattress, and our tests found it scored highly for heavyweight sleepers over 230 pounds, except when sleeping on their front.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Side sleepers under 130 pounds will likely find that this mattress is too firm for them, which means they may not get the cushioning they need around their hips and shoulders.
- Average Weight Sleepers – We don’t think this medium-firm mattress will provide the pressure relief that average-weight side sleepers need at the hips and shoulders, especially if they only sleep on their side.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier side sleepers will experience this mattress as softer, so they’ll feel more sinkage and contouring, providing good pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lighter back sleepers could experience a good balance of cushioning and support, thanks to the soft layers and zoned support coils that should keep the lumbar area lifted.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should also enjoy a nice balance of sinkage and support, with softer coils under the head and legs and firmer coils beneath the hips.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier back sleepers should feel sufficiently supported and cushioned on this mattress, with the steel coil unit providing balanced support.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – The medium-firm feel of the Silk & Snow Organic may be just right for lightweight front sleepers, whose hips should remain level for healthy spine alignment.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This mattress may be okay for average-weight combination sleepers who only spend a little time on their front, but strict stomach sleepers will likely require a firmer mattress to keep their hips from sinking too far into the bed.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – We don’t recommend this bed for heavier stomach sleepers, who will likely experience a lot of sinkage at the hips, causing lower back pain.
Pressure Relief & Pain
The Silk & Snow Organic performed well in our pressure relief tests for back sleepers in all positions, offering comfortable cushioning while keeping the spine in its correct and healthy alignment. In general, we think that most side sleepers would require a softer mattress to get the pressure relief they require, especially at the hips, where we noticed more pressure. However, heavyweight side sleepers could do well on this bed since it’ll feel softer for them and therefore, deliver more cushioning.
Back Pain – Back sleepers with back pain should feel comfortable on the Silk & Snow Organic, as we experienced good pressure relief and support in this position. However, we think most stomach sleepers will likely be better off on a firmer mattress, with the exception of those who are very petite.
Hip Pain – Those with hip pain who sleep on their back should enjoy comfortable pressure relief on this mattress. However, side sleepers are unlikely to experience the necessary sinkage, and stomach sleepers will likely sink too far, causing pressure buildup.
Shoulder Pain – We think this mattress is too firm for most side sleepers with shoulder pain, though plus-size sleepers may do okay on it, and back sleepers should feel nice pressure relief on their shoulders.
Support
The Silk & Snow Organic offers great support for back sleepers as it features zoned support in its innerspring unit. This means that there are softer coils on the top and bottom thirds of the mattress (where your head, shoulders, and feet are) and firmer coils in the middle third (where your hips are). The firmer coils help keep your lumbar area lifted, placing your spine in optimal alignment.
The mattress also has good edge support, thanks to even firmer coils around the perimeter, which are designed to stop you from rolling out of bed when sleeping close to the edge – great news for couples.
Motion Transfer
The Silk & Snow Organic features a steel coil unit and a natural latex layer, both of which offer bounce. The downside of this is that the bed rates average when it comes to motion isolation. This means you’re likely to feel a partner getting in and out of bed and may also feel them tossing and turning during the night, which could be an issue if you’re a light sleeper.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
While this mattress delivers decent cooling by way of a breathable cover and a coil unit that fosters airflow, it could still sleep too warm for some people such as exceptionally hot sleepers those who live in warmer climates.
Performance for Couples
The Silk & Snow Organic’s medium-firm rating may be a good one for couples looking to compromise on their firmness preferences. When it comes to sex, many couples prefer a fairly bouncy mattress, and this one offers a good level of that from the latex layer and coil unit. The mattress also features extra-firm coils around the perimeter, which provide good edge support, allowing partners to spread out on the bed without feeling like they’re going to roll off.
However, we found the motion isolation in the Silk & Snow Organic to be average, so you may feel slightly disturbed if your partner moves a lot during the night or gets in and out of bed at a different time than you.

Preference-based Features
Good Edge Support
Edge support is valuable if you have mobility issues and require strong mattress edges to get in and out of bed securely or if you share a bed and need to use the entire surface area. The Silk & Snow Organic has good edge support, thanks to its extra-firm coils around the perimeter.
Good Bounce
The Silk & Snow Organic offers a nice level of bounce, provided by its coil unit and naturally springy latex layer. This is good news for combination sleepers who want to be able to change positions with ease, as well as those with mobility issues and couples who prefer a bit of bounce during intimacy.
Eco-Conscious Materials
Shoppers looking for a greener alternative to standard synthetic mattresses will appreciate the certified organic cotton and latex in the Silk & Snow Organic, as well as the natural and sustainable New Zealand wool that’s used in the quilt layer.
Adjustable Base Compatible
The Silk & Snow Organic mattress is compatible with adjustable bases.
Construction: What’s Inside Silk & Snow Organic?
The 12-inch Silk & Snow Organic hybrid mattress starts with an ultra-soft and breathable organic cotton cover, which is certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cover is also certified carbon-neutral, to ease any additional environmental concerns.
- Below the organic cover is a 1-inch layer of sustainable New Zealand wool, which provides cushioning and acts as a natural fire retardant, avoiding the use of chemical alternatives.
- The comfort layer has 2.5 inches of Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified organic and carbon-neutral Dunlop latex. This certification ensures the purity and organic status of natural latex rubber, which is used instead of synthetic latex. This material makes the bed soft with gentle contouring, while also providing durability. In fact, natural latex mattresses are considered to be among the most long-lasting in the industry as they can remain firm and responsive for well over a decade.
- The zoned support layer features dense, individually-pocketed steel coils. Soft coils on the outer thirds of the mattress and firmer coils on the inner third provide targeted support to promote a healthy back alignment. Coils also allow for more airflow, helping to keep the mattress cool rather than trapping body heat.
- The mattress perimeter features even firmer coils to provide edge support and prevent the sides of the bed from collapsing when someone is sitting or sleeping there.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Like all bed-in-a-box models, the Silk & Snow Organic has an element of off-gassing, which is an unpleasant odor that occurs when chemical byproducts escape after being compressed. However, the latex in this bed is eco-INSTITUT certified, which means it’s free from any hazardous compounds. While it may take up to 72 hours for the mattress to fully expand, you can lie down for a nap right away.
However, a Queen size Silk & Snow Organic weighs 92 pounds, so you’ll likely need someone to help you carry the box to your room of choice.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The natural latex in this mattress is certified by eco-INSTITUT, a lab in Germany that has almost 30 years of experience testing mattresses for hazardous chemicals. This certification ensures that any levels of these chemicals are well below safety regulation requirements. The organic cotton in the cover is certified carbon neutral.
- Certified Natural Materials – The cotton in the Silk & Snow Organic’s cover is GOTS-certified, which means it meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The latex is certified by GOLS, recognizing its purity and organic status. Natural New Zealand wool is used in the quilt layer.

Overall Summary
The Silk & Snow Organic is an environmentally-friendly product that boasts plenty of advantages for different sleepers. In particular, back sleepers of all weights should find this medium-firm mattress a good fit.
Side Sleepers
3/5
Side sleepers need good contouring around their shoulders and hips to give them a comfortable night’s sleep, and we don’t think this medium-firm mattress provides that for light to average-weight sleepers. However, this mattress will feel softer for heavyweight side sleepers, so we think it’s a good choice for them.
Back Sleepers
5/5
Sleepers of all weights should find that this mattress offers comfortable cushioning when sleeping on their backs, while they get plenty of support to keep the lumbar area elevated. This combination should provide a great level of pressure relief and healthy spine alignment, helping to alleviate any aches and pains.
Stomach Sleepers
3/5
Lightweight sleepers will likely find this mattress feels firmer, so they should experience the correct amount of hip and spinal support while sleeping on their front. However, average and heavyweight stomach sleepers will do better on a firmer mattress to keep them lifted.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
The Silk & Snow Organic has an element of bounce, which allows for easier mobility when changing sleeping positions during the night. We also found that the bed adjusted quickly to each new position, which is great news for combination sleepers. However, this mattress is limiting in that it may only accommodate two positions, depending on your body weight.
Couples
3/5
With its good edge support and element of bounce, this mattress could be ideal for couples, especially if both people sleep on their backs. While the motion isolation isn’t bad, it could be better, which may be an issue for light sleepers with restless partners.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
We only recommend this bed for heavy side sleepers, as it should provide the right amount of cushioning and pressure relief with a decent dose of support. Heavier stomach and back sleepers, however, should steer clear, as the mattress won’t deliver enough support in these postures for those above 230 pounds.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
Lightweight back and stomach sleepers should feel comfortably cushioned and supported on the Silk & Snow Organic, but we don’t recommend it for lighter side sleepers. Side sleepers under 130 pounds will probably find this mattress too firm and experience uncomfortable pressure buildup.
Average Weight Sleepers
3/5
Back sleepers weighing between 130 and 20 pounds should find this mattress comfortable, providing them with great support and pressure relief. Average-weight combination sleepers who spend only a short amount of time on their stomach may be fine, but we don’t think this mattress provides enough support for strict stomach sleepers in this category. It’s also likely too firm for side sleepers.
Overall Value
5/5
The Silk & Snow Organic is a mattress that could be perfect for eco-conscious consumers who are looking for a mattress that utilizes natural, organic, and durable materials. With its 100-night trial and 15-year warranty, Silk & Snow offers a great value to American and Canadian shoppers with their Organic model.
Our Verdict
The Silk & Snow Organic is proof that high-quality, eco-friendly mattresses don’t have to break the bank. This competitively-priced mattress is made with certified organic cotton and latex, as well as sustainable New Zealand wool, so it’s a great choice for those looking to avoid synthetic materials.
We recommend this mattress for back sleepers of all weights, who should find great comfort and support from the latex and coils, and they should sleep easy knowing their mattress isn’t harming them or the planet. Plus, this purchase should last for years (if looked after properly) as it contains durable materials.
