If variety is the spice of life, the Saatva Solaire mattress should provide a flavorful sleeping adventure. This bed has 50 adjustable firmness levels that can be changed by pushing a button on one of the two attached controls.
The bed’s versatility should catch the eye of sleepers who like to change or fine-tune their firmness levels, but I think couples with different preferences are the target audience for the Saatva Solaire. I tested this customizable bed on a soft, medium, and firm level, and it created a memorable mattress experience.
Like an actor who appears in comedies and dramas, this bed has range. But does it have star power, or should it be given a background role?

Who I Recommend the Saatva Solaire For:
- Back Sleepers – When I tested this bed on my back, I found it comfortable in the soft, medium, and firm settings. I especially appreciated how it aligned my spine and filled the gap around my lower back.
- Couples – Couples who buy a Queen size or larger can set their side of the bed to their desired firmness level. It also had good motion isolation, meaning that even if you sleep with a restless partner, you won’t likely be disturbed by their movements.
- Customization lovers — If you appreciate getting something “just right,” you’ll love how you can dial in the firmness of the Solaire.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Saatva Solaire For:
- Tech enthusiasts — Since the Saatva uses vulcanized air chambers and has 50 different firmness settings, it’s understandable if you think it has cutting-edge technology. It doesn’t. Two wired remotes with four buttons control the firmness.
- Budget shoppers – This is Saatva’s most expensive bed and one of the most expensive we’ve tested. If you have a tighter budget, this is not the bed for you.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Solaire
On Saatva’s website, the reviews for the Saatva Solaire are overwhelmingly positive, coming in at 4.7 out of 5 stars from over 140 reviews. Customers appreciate the Saatva Solaire mattress for its adjustable firmness settings but may find its price point to be higher than expected.
Testing the Saatva Solaire
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
Although I spend a lot of time with mattresses, one with 50 different firmness settings was a first for me. So, to get an accurate assessment of the Solaire, I performed tests at levels 5, 25, and 40. I then checked out certain aspects of several different settings along the way.
These tests included spending time on the mattress to see how it felt to me. However, since feel is subjective, I spoke with a colleague who had also tested this bed and incorporated tools such as a temperature gun, pressure map, and seismograph app. The hands-on evaluations and more definitive readings allowed me to assign scores based on our mattress scoring rubric.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 5.5-7.5
We rank a mattress’s firmness level on a scale of 1-10, but given Solaire’s unique customization capabilities, I gave it a firmness range of 5.5-7.5. I was somewhat surprised that there wasn’t a more substantial difference between the lowest setting and the highest I tested, considering that there are 50.
I’ve created the chart below to help you match your sleeping position to the ideal Saatva Solaire firmness option.
SLEEPING POSITION | BEST SAATVA SOLAIRE FIRMNESS OPTION |
Side Sleeper | Soft to Medium-Soft |
Back Sleeper | Medium |
Stomach Sleeper | Firm to Firmest |
Combination Sleeper | Medium |
How Does the Saatva Solaire Feel?
The soft Euro top of this mattress gives you a welcoming entrance, but I soon found that I couldn’t get completely comfortable. If I landed on one setting I liked, I was always tempted to move the firmness up or down a few levels to see if I liked it more or less. I appreciated how the soft foam of the pillow top provided some contouring, and the bounciness of the latex layers made it easy to move around on, but neither bowled me over. I liked many individual features of this bed, but they didn’t seem to come together in a way that gave it a conducive, pleasant feel.
However, since feel is subjective, I asked a longtime mattress tester colleague his thoughts and he said, “As a guy who switches positions at night, I love the Saatva Solaire’s adjustable firmness. When I was back sleeping, I set it to medium firmness, and it was just perfect. Side sleeping, I softened things up for some great pressure relief. Combo sleepers should rejoice.”
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Saatva, their Solaire mattress supports up to 800 pounds on each side, totaling 1,600 pounds.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | For side sleepers under 130 pounds, this mattress should provide excellent support and spinal alignment. I recommend that they keep it on one of the lowest settings to prevent pressure buildup. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | I’m a side sleeper, and I loved that my spine and hips felt very supported when the bed was between the 15-25 firmness setting. However, I still felt pressure along my rib cage and shoulder. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | A colleague who tested this mattress said he felt pressure on his hips even in a soft setting. That said, dialing in a setting that works for heavier side sleepers may be difficult. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight back sleepers should enjoy the Saatva Solaire. Its adjustability allows them to hone in on a setting that provides the necessary firmness without being overly rigid. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Although I am not a back sleeper, I appreciated how supported my back felt on this bed. I liked adjusting the firmness level until I found that level 30 kept my spine aligned and my lower back supported. I love it when that space around your lower back is filled in, and it was with the Solaire. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | A heavyweight co-worker who tested this bed thought that this was a good bed for back sleepers when he had the firmness at 40 out of 50. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | The top of this bed is tufted with comfort foam, which should provide some soft contouring around the hips. The adjustable firmness levels will allow lightweight stomach sleepers to fine-tune the firmness that works for them. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | As a part-time stomach sleeper, I appreciated how well my hips were elevated on settings between 35 and 50. It kept my spine aligned, but oddly, I didn’t feel that comfortable in this position. The foam in the top didn’t allow for enough cozy contouring. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | My colleague, who weighs over 230 pounds, said that this bed was good for him on his stomach when it was at its highest setting. While he didn’t think it was the best bed for heavyweight sleepers, he did believe it would do a good job. |
Pressure Relief
4/5
It was a tale of two beds when it came to pressure relief. When the bed was set at a firmness level of 30 or less, I thought it had excellent pressure relief when sleeping on my back.
Combined with the foam and latex in the top layers, these lower settings provided contouring around my shoulders, lower back, and hips. I cranked it to 40 when I was on my stomach, and my hips were elevated so that I felt no dip in my lower back.
I also used a pressure relief map that records how much pressure is around certain body parts. Lots of blue and green mean little to no pressure whereas lots of red and yellow mean there’s more pressure buildup.
The pressure map readings didn’t show much pressure, even when I was on my side. However, I tried several different settings and couldn’t find one ideal for my side. I felt pressure around my ribs and shoulder at all the settings I tried, so I subtracted a point.

Is the Saatva Solaire Good for Pain Relief?
With its adjustability, the Saatva Solaire should provide great pain relief for the back and hips, but it probably won’t be as good for the shoulders.
Back Pain | The adjustability of this mattress’s firmness makes it a great choice for those with back pain. Unlike most other mattresses, the various firmness levels may help you find a setting that pinpoints the area of your back where you experience pain. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | On the Saatva Solaire, my hips felt supported and elevated. On my back and stomach, I felt virtually no pressure around my midsection. There was some pressure when I was on my side, no matter the firmness, but it wasn’t necessarily a dealbreaker. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | I don’t think the Saatva Solaire would necessarily prevent shoulder pain, particularly for side sleepers. When I tested this mattress, I felt a lot of pressure around this area. Include this CTA: Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
Much like your best friend, the Saatva Solaire is a supportive superstar. The adjustable air chambers allow sleepers to be supported in all sleep positions, while the foam and latex add layers of contouring support. I loved how supported my hips felt and how I could adjust this bed’s firmness to get just the right amount of spinal alignment.
I tested this bed by spending time on it on my back, stomach, and side at various firmness levels. While the support didn’t waver in any position, I gave this bed a special supportive nod for stomach sleeping. It kept my hips elevated and prevented my lower back from getting into an awkward u-position. The Saatva Solaire goes to the head of the class regarding support, garnering a 5 out of 5 score.
Motion Isolation
5/5
Saatva models don’t always receive much love when it comes to motion isolation, but the Saatva Solaire gives them some redemption. Testing a mattress can sometimes be a lonely task, and although I didn’t have a partner to test out how well this bed keeps motion from transferring from one side to the other, I did have a seismograph app.
The app’s reading showed that a sleeper’s movement was isolated to their side of the bed because of the dual-sided air chambers. This construction feature allows you to customize the firmness and makes motion transfer non-existent. This makes this bed an excellent choice for those who sleep with a restless partner or pet, earning a perfect 5 out of 5 for motion isolation.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
The Saatva Solaire regulates temperature well, but if you’re looking for a mattress as cool as the other side of the pillow, this is probably not the bed for you. I conducted a temperature test by taking the bed’s initial temperature (73.6 degrees), lying on the bed for five minutes, and taking the surface temperature again (81.9 degrees), followed by another five minutes of lounging on the bed and another temperature reading (78.9 degrees).
I liked that the bed only went up around eight degrees after the first five minutes, but I was even more impressed that it came down about three degrees after the second five-minute segment. I deducted a point because this bed isn’t cool to the touch and went up more than five degrees between the first and second temperature readings.
Bounce
3.5/5
I tested the Saatva Solaire’s bounce by dropping a 10-pound ball on it and jumping around on it like I did when I was a kid in a hotel room (okay, I took it a little easier than that…this is an expensive mattress). While neither the ball nor I were launched to the ceiling, we also didn’t crash down with a thud, thanks to the layer of latex.
However, when I rolled around and applied pressure, this mattress quickly regained shape. Therefore, I would say that combination sleepers would be good to sleep on this bed, but it may not be the best for sexually active couples. I gave it a 3.5 out of 5 when it comes to bounce.
Edge Support
5/5
I gravitate towards the side of the bed when I’m sleeping, so edge support is an important feature for me. The Saatva Solaire made me feel extremely secure while lying on the side for a minute. I was not afraid about falling off of this bed because it didn’t sink in.
I also tested this feature by sitting on the bed and tying my shoes for a minute. Although I felt a minuscule amount of sinkage when I first sat on the bed, I felt incredibly stable when bent over.
The excellent edge support should make it easy for those with mobility to get out of bed. These are the standout reasons the Saatva Solaire earned a 5 out of 5 for edge support.
Accessibility
4/5
We give accessibility scores based on how the individual mattress and the brand stand out amongst the competition. All Saatva mattresses come with complimentary white glove delivery. This means that delivery and setup will be handled for you, which is great for those who live alone, have mobility issues, or would rather someone else do the heavy lifting.
However, Saatva mattresses are fairly heavy and don’t come with handles, so if you need to move it after it is delivered, it could cause you to break a sweat.
The Solaire has two attached remotes that you need to consider when moving it. Saatva charges a fee if you return the mattress for any reason. Although I’m a big fan of the white glove delivery, I deduced one point for this reason.
Customer Service
5/5
Saatva brings its A-game when it comes to customer service. It was incredibly easy to communicate with reps by online chat, email, or phone — each option had an almost instant response. This company also has some of the best policies in the field. They offer a full-year sleep trial and lifetime warranty, two policies that indicate faith in their products. Saatva easily earned the top score for customer service.
Performance for Couples
4/5
The dual-sided controls (in a queen or larger) are like finding a pot of gold for couples who want different firmness levels. If you have one sleeper who wants a bed that reminds them of sleeping on the floor and another who wants to be encased in a cotton ball, they can both get close to their goals with Solaire’s side-specific air chambers. This construction feature also keeps motion transfer at bay, and couples who want an additional customization option can select the Solaire Split King or Split Cal King, allowing them to raise or lower only their side of the bed.
It also has great edge support, which allows sleepers to utilize the entire surface of the bed. The only reason I deducted a point for this category is the bounce. It isn’t horrible, but it may make it trickier for sexually active couples to reposition easily.
Preference-Based Features
Multiple Firmness Options
This mattress offers a competitive advantage by providing sleepers with up to 50 firmness choices. These range from soft all the way to firm, so you can find what works best for your sleep style.
As Michael demonstrated, there are remotes on each side of the bed, so both partners can customize their side separately.
Free White Glove Delivery
When you order a Solaire bed, you are also getting free white glove delivery with your purchase. Not only will the company deliver the mattress right to your door, but a team of professionals will set it up for you. You do not need to worry about your old mattress either; they’ll remove that free of charge as well.
Eco-Conscious Materials
Saatva is an excellent company for those who want beds that are more environmentally friendly. The Solaire features a certified organic cotton cover, 100 percent natural latex, and foams certified to be safe from harmful levels of chemicals or substances.
Adjustable Base Compatible
The Saatva Solaire mattress is compatible with different foundations, including an adjustable base.
Construction: What’s Inside the Saatva Solaire?
The Solaire Adjustable Mattress is around 13 inches tall. The organic cotton cover is quilted to a 3-inch Euro pillow top with Lumbar Zone® Quilting.
- Below the pillow top is a 1-inch-tall layer of 5-zone natural latex. This material is buoyant, responsive, and denser in the middle, which helps enhance pressure relief.
- Next is a 2-inch gel-infused memory foam designed to relieve pressure and tension. The foam contours your body but doesn’t overheat, as its gel infusions help draw the heat away from your body.
- Further down is 2 inches of CertiPUR-US® gel-infused memory foam that helps pull heat away from the body.
- Beneath the memory foam, you’ll find a moisture barrier layer. This helps protect the mechanical components from moisture and prevents bacteria.
- The next layer consists of the air chamber with a multi-directional box baffle design. This layer is made from vulcanized latex and acts as the primary support system for the bed. According to Saatva, this layer is approximately 6 inches when you include the cotton and other materials it is covered in.
- Encasing the bed is a Power Edge enclosure reinforcing the perimeter. Another thing about this layer is that it encases the pumps and hoses, so they’re not visible.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Setting up your Solaire mattress should be a breeze because the company offers complimentary white glove delivery with your purchase. This means a team of movers will set up the bed for you.
Temporary off-gassing is common in new mattresses, but the Solaire’s use of more eco-friendly materials helps reduce off-gassing. This is an advantage if you’re sensitive to smells.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they were inspected by a third party that found them to have safe amounts of potentially harmful chemicals and metals.

My Verdict of the Saatva Solaire
The Saatva Solaire was one of the most intriguing beds I have ever tested. The mattress’s 50 different firmness levels are definitely an attention grabber. It certainly had a lot of bells and whistles that I enjoyed, and it performed well in many categories.
However, I wasn’t completely sold on this bed—especially at its price point. I wanted to feel more of a significant change in firmness, and while it had a decent change of feel, I don’t think it was enough. Also, I found the noise the air chambers made slightly off-putting, and the remotes seemed cheaply made and antiquated.
This bed checks all the boxes on paper, but after testing it out, I was a little disappointed. I expect more for a Queen bed that costs over $4,000. That said, its high marks in multiple testing categories earned it a 4.4 out of 5 overall rating.
