If you’ve ever bought a Saatva mattress, you’re probably well aware of how their products come with some outstanding features and policies. In June 2024, the company released their newest mattress, the Saatva Contour5, a memory foam bed with a focus on cooling.
The Contour5 is a customizable bed that I would recommend to luxury shoppers, people looking for pain relief, and memory foam fans. My Contour5 review will focus on the Medium model, which is what our team tested.

Who I Recommend the Contour5 For:
- People with chronic pain – The Contour5 provides great relief for sensitive pressure points, so if you experience chronic pain, this mattress may help alleviate some discomfort. The various layers of the bed’s memory foam work together to contour to your body and relieve pressure and pain.
- Luxury shoppers – Saatva offers pricier mattresses made of long-lasting, high-quality materials. Not only that, but the brand’s attention to detail and customer care is top-notch. If you can spend the extra money on a Saatva bed, I suggest you try the Contour5.
- Memory foam fans who sleep hot – If you’ve slept on a memory foam bed before, you probably know they can get hot since the dense foam easily traps body heat. The Saatva Contour5 was built with innovative cooling technology, giving hot sleepers a memory foam bed that helps keep them cool.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Contour5 For:
- Stomach sleepers – As a stomach sleeper, the Medium model didn’t cut it; the bed was too soft. Stomach sleepers typically need a firm mattress to keep their hips lifted so their lower back doesn’t hyperextend. The Firm model of the Contour5 could be a great option for stomach sleepers, but I have yet to test it, so I can’t be sure. If you’re a stomach sleeper, check out the Saatva Classic mattress. You can also check out my article on the best mattresses for stomach sleepers for more options.
- People who prefer bounce – The Contour5 is a medium-firm memory foam mattress, so it doesn’t have as much bounce as, say, an innerspring or firmer mattress may have. If you’re a combination sleeper, have limited mobility, or are sexually active, the Contour5 might not have enough bounce for your liking. Instead, you should check out my review of the best innerspring mattresses.
Customer Reviews of the Contour5 Mattress
The Contour5 rates 5 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. However, there is only one review on the site currently, likely because this mattress was just released in June 2024. The reviewer, a combination sleeper, already felt a decrease in their chronic pain after sleeping on the Contour5 for only a few nights.
Testing the Contour5 Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
I tested the Medium model of the Saatva Contour5 using a thorough hands-on process that incorporated tools like a pressure map, seismograph app, and temperature gun. Using these specific tests for each performance category, I was able to provide scores based on our mattress scoring rubric.
Since I’m an average-weight sleeper, my colleague, Corey, tested this mattress for heavyweight sleepers, which helped me get a better understanding of how this mattress could work for different body types.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 5/10 (Medium model)
We rate mattress firmness (how soft or hard it feels) on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the firmest. I rated the Contour5 Medium model a 5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale. This means the mattress has a medium firmness.
I’ve created the chart below to help you match your sleeping position to the ideal Contour5 firmness option.
SLEEPING POSITION | BEST CONTOUR5 FIRMNESS OPTION |
Side Sleeper | Medium |
Back Sleeper | Firm |
Stomach Sleeper | Firm |
Combination Sleeper | Medium or Firm |
How Does the Contour5 Mattress Feel?
The Contour5 is topped with Saatva’s standard organic cotton cover. When lying on this softer mattress, I sank about 2-3 inches, but I still felt supported by the five foam layers sitting underneath the mattress cover.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Saatva Contour5 has a weight limit of 300 pounds per sleeper.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight side sleepers should find good pressure relief from this mattress while still feeling adequate spine support. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | On my side, I noticed my shoulders were going down noticeably and slightly more than my hips. Yet, I don’t think it’s enough to throw off spine alignment completely, especially with all the lumbar support from this bed. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Corey, our heavyweight tester, felt a lot of pressure buildup along his side, especially at his hips and shoulders. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight back sleepers should feel supported by this bed, but they might miss the extra lumbar support that I, an average-weight sleeper, was missing. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | My back was supported by the Contour5, but I noticed where my spine pulled away from the bed, the mattress wasn’t filling in that gap as much as I would like. I wanted that extra “oomph” from the lumbar support features. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Corey was much more comfortable sleeping on his back compared to his side, but there was still slight pressure buildup around his midsection. Even still, he said it felt wonderful. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight sleepers will probably think the Contour5 is firm and supportive enough for stomach sleeping since mattresses usually feel firmer for lightweight people. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | My midsection was sinking in just a tad too much, and while you could forgo the pillow to help mitigate this, the reality is it’s just not an ideal stomach-sleeper mattress. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Corey said his hips sunk deeper than his shoulders did and that the bed felt a bit soft. |
Pressure Relief
4/5
I used a pressure map to test how well the Contour5 relieves pressure. When lying on the map on top of a mattress, the goal is to mostly see green and blue, as those refer to areas experiencing low pressure, while yellow and red represent higher-pressure areas.
As you can see, my pressure map had all blues and greens, which isn’t a huge surprise given the bed’s softness around my joints. I had my colleague Corey do the pressure map as well so we could see how well the Contour5 relieves pressure for heavyweight sleepers. Corey’s map shows some blue and green, but there is significant pressure buildup around his spine, especially when he slept on his side. All in all, the Contour5 does well with pressure relief for lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but it might not work as well for heavier folks.

Is the Contour5 Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
Yes, the Contour5 mattress could be good for pain relief because it contains memory foam and has a medium firmness. That said, the Medium model is noticeably softer, which could create back pain depending on your weight class and sleep style.
Back Pain | The Contour5 has various layers of memory foam that should support the spine and posture. That said, stomach sleepers might experience increased pain since the bed may be too soft to support these folks. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | This mattress is a good choice for folks with hip pain because it keeps the hips supported while still contouring to this sensitive area. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | I think the Contour5 is a solid option for people prone to shoulder pain because the memory foam provides pressure relief and cushion. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
4/5
The Contour5 provides lots of support compared to other foam mattresses because it is equipped with five layers of foam, including a 6-inch, high-density foam base. This mattress should deliver enough supportive spine alignment for many side and back sleepers, but it misses the mark for stomach sleepers. The Contour5 is too soft for proper alignment while stomach sleeping, which is why it earned a 4 out of 5 for support.
Motion Isolation
4/5
Motion isolation happens when someone is moving around on one side of a mattress and the other person doesn’t feel that movement on their side. Motion isolation is helpful for couples, especially those who have different sleep schedules, are restless sleepers, or wake up easily from movement.
I tested the Contour5’s ability to isolate motion by using a seismograph app to detect movement while my colleague and I moved around on the bed. As you can see in the seismograph image, a little bit of motion was picked up, but my colleague and I could barely feel each other’s movement. Based on the slight motion detection by the seismograph, I rated the Contour5’s motion isolation a 4 out of 5.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
With this mattress being memory foam, I was skeptical of its ability to regulate temperature. I put the Contour5 to the test by using a temperature gun that recorded the bed’s temperature before I laid on it, after five minutes of lying on it, and then after 10 minutes. The mattress started at 73.3 degrees Fahrenheit, was 80.5 degrees Fahrenheit after five minutes, and 81.5 degrees Fahrenheit after 10 minutes.
The Contour5 has decent temperature regulation based on our temperature gun test, but there isn’t a cool-to-the-touch cover or anything that gives me a clue that this will sleep ‘cold’. However, this memory foam bed has a CoolVent™ system and airflow channels that help distribute heat, so it’s a good cooling option compared to other foam mattresses. With those factors in mind and the heat gun test, I gave it a 4 rating.
Bounce
3.5/5
To test bounce, or the mattress’s responsiveness, I used three testing methods, dropping a tennis ball, dropping a lacrosse ball, and jumping on it. I also try to gauge how easy this responsiveness makes repositioning. Doing so showed me that the Contour5’s foam reacts pretty quickly to movement, but the sink and softness of the surface require a bit more effort to move around. So, I rated the Contour a 3.5 out of 5 for bounce. If you’re sexually active, a combination sleeper, or have limited mobility, you might prefer a bouncier mattress that’s going to let you adjust more easily.
Edge Support
4/5
For a plush all-foam mattress, I commend the Contour5 for its edge support. When sitting and lying at the edge of the bed, I felt like I was held fairly securely and didn’t feel like I was going to slide off. This isn’t the Saatva Classic, though, so I’m not held steadfastly while I sit at the edge and there is some sink. With this in mind, I gave the Contour5 a 4 rating in this category.
Accessibility
4/5
I gave the Contour5 mattress a 4 out of 5 for accessibility, taking into consideration the different ways this mattress stands out.
The purchase of a Saatva mattress includes free white glove delivery, which means you don’t have to lift a finger and your mattress will be delivered and installed for you. White glove delivery is an excellent feature for folks with limited mobility, older adults, or people who live alone. Another accessible feature of the Contour5 worth mentioning is the multiple firmness options offered when purchasing the bed. Choosing between the Medium and Firm models allows you the flexibility to cater to your own sleeping needs.
Saatva does have a $99 return fee and the bed doesn’t have any particular accessible features aside from its focus on cooling, so that’s why I rated the Contour5 a 4 out of 5.
Customer Service
5/5
Saatva offers fantastic customer service policies, such as their free white glove delivery, old mattress removal, lifetime warranty, and 365-night sleep trial. Not only that, but customer service representatives are readily available online and by phone to answer any questions. These qualities earned the Contour5 a perfect 5 out of 5 from me.
Performance for Couples
3.5/5
I gave the Contour5 a score of 3.5 out of 5 for its performance for couples and here’s why. The bed has some great features for couples, like its edge support, motion isolation, and temperature regulation. These qualities make a mattress more enjoyable for couples because they can spread out in bed, move around without disturbing each other, and don’t overheat in bed with a partner. The Contour5 also does well with overall support, which is important when the mattress is holding the weight of two people.
Yet, the Contour5 still comes with some not-so-ideal features that may be an issue for some couples. The mattress has mediocre bounce, a drawback for sexually active folks. Also, the Contour5 has a weight capacity of 300 pounds per person, an issue for some heavyweight sleepers. Finally, since the Contour5 is a 5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, it may just not feel firm enough for some couples.
Preference-Based Features
Various Firmness Options
Saatva caters to a wider variety of customer needs by offering a Medium and Firm model of the Contour5 mattress.
Eco-Friendly Materials
If you’re an eco-conscious shopper, the Contour5 should meet your needs. The mattress includes eco-friendly foam because it is CertiPUR-US® certified and has a GREENGUARD® Gold certified natural flame barrier.

Compatible with Different Bed Frames
The Contour5 can be placed on top of a foundation or box spring, a standard bed frame plus a foundation or box spring, or a platform bed frame. Additionally, this mattress is adjustable base compatible.
Construction: What’s Inside the Contour5 Mattress?
The Contour5 is 12.5 inches tall and topped with a hypoallergenic, organic cotton cover.
- Below the cover, you’ll find a flame barrier that encases the entire mattress. This layer doesn’t include toxic chemicals like fiberglass.
- Next, the Contour5 has two inches of Saatva’s CoolVent™ that aim to cool foam in the lumbar region. Cooler foam helps with support, which is essential in the lumbar area, or your lower back.
- Below the cooling layer is 1.5 inches of gel-infused memory foam that focuses on pressure relief and support. This foam includes airflow channels that promote cooling and temperature regulation while you sleep.
- The fourth layer of the Contour5 is three inches of heavier memory foam that gives the mattress its hug-like feel. This foam also helps with pressure relief and durability.
- The customizable layer comes next, as this is the layer that changes whether you purchase the Medium or Firm model of the Contour5. This is a 2-inch transition layer that promotes full-body lift and support.
- At the base of the bed lies a 6-inch durable, firm foam base that supports the layers above. Additionally, this high-density foam base contributes to edge support, stability, and durability.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Saatva offers free white glove delivery, which means someone will deliver and set up the Contour5 for you.
If you’ve ever unboxed a bed-in-a-box before, you may be familiar with the less-than-optimal “new mattress smell” known as off-gassing. However, you shouldn’t notice much of an off-gassing smell with the Contour5 because it won’t be delivered in a compressed box. Instead, Saatva delivers their beds full-size, and this lack of compression helps eliminate off-gassing.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® – The foams in the Contour5 are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
- GREENGUARD® Gold Certified Flame Barrier – GREENGUARD® Gold Certified mattresses produce low chemical emissions, reducing indoor air pollution and exposure to toxic chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, and formaldehyde.
- Endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) – The ACA endorses mattresses of the highest quality that they recommend for pain relief and posture support. Expert doctors reviewed, analyzed, and tested all aspects of the Contour5 before endorsing this mattress.
- Congress of Chiropractic State Association Seal of Approval – The COCSA Seal of Approval is awarded to mattresses that support spinal health per the association’s standards.

My Verdict of the Contour5 Mattress
Now that I’ve tested and reviewed the Medium model of the Contour5, I recommend it to most back sleepers, along with lightweight and average-weight side sleepers.
However, the Medium model of the Contour5 is just too soft for stomach sleepers and doesn’t provide enough bounce for people with limited mobility or sexually active couples. It might also be too soft for heavyweight sleepers, depending on their sleeping position. If you’re looking for a firmer mattress, the Firm model of the Contour5 might suit your needs better.
The Contour5’s pressure relief, motion isolation, and overall support stood out to me, and my final score for this mattress is a 4 out of 5.
