Purple mattresses are unique in the mattress world, thanks to the brand’s hyper-elastic gel polymer grid. This waffle-like grid is designed to provide consumers with a more comfortable, cooling, and squishy night’s sleep.
Purple’s proprietary grid also means that Purple mattresses don’t feel like any other beds. This is true of the RestorePlus™, which includes Purple’s patented gel grid and innerspring coils, making this hybrid bed both pressure-relieving and supportive.
My in-depth Purple RestorePlus™ mattress review will cover the details of this product and who I think would be the best fit for it. Specifically, I tested the Soft model, which I’ll focus on in this review. However, this bed is also available in Firm.

*Editor’s note: Purple now offers complimentary in-home delivery for their Restore mattresses.
Who I Recommend the Purple RestorePlus™ For:
- Lightweight sleepers – The Soft version of this mattress will be the best fit for lighter-weight to average-weight sleepers.
- Side sleepers – The Soft version of this bed is ideal for side sleepers, as it gently cushions the shoulder and hip when lying on the side.
- Luxury shoppers – This mattress is made with a lot of quality materials, including hypoallergenic and non-toxic gels. If you’re after a more luxurious mattress, I think you’ll appreciate this bed from Purple.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Purple RestorePlus™ For:
- Heavyweight sleepers – In my opinion, heavyweight sleepers would do better on the Firm model because the Soft won’t be supportive enough for spine alignment. We had three plus-size testers try out this bed and none of them felt super comfortable on it.
- Stomach sleepers – The Soft version of this bed doesn’t work well for stomach sleeping for the same reasons it doesn’t work well for heavy sleepers—it dips in key areas that need support, like the hips. While lying on your stomach, this creates an uncomfortable curve in the lower back. Instead, a mattress specifically for stomach sleepers could be a better option.
Customer Reviews of the Purple RestorePlus™ Mattress
The Purple RestorePlus™ received an overall score of 4.6 out of 5 on Purple’s official website. Customers have reported being happy with the bed’s cooling properties as well as how it cradles pressure points. However, some people found it firmer than expected, which was the reason they sent it back.
Testing the Purple RestorePlus™ Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
When testing our mattresses, I am looking at specific elements, including pressure relief, support, firmness, motion isolation, bounce, edge support, and cooling.
I’m an average-weight sleeper, but to help get the perspective of other body types, I had Loren Bullock test this bed for lightweight sleepers. I then had our videographer Spencer Bland and two other folks test it for heavyweight sleepers.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 5/10 (Plush Soft)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Sleep Advisor’s mattress firmness scale ranges from 1 to 10, in which 10 is the firmest. I gave the RestorePlus™ a solid 5. I’d say this particular bed feels very soft. Although Purple does classify it as medium-soft, I’d disagree with the “medium” part.
How Does It Feel?
The first thing I notice when lying down on the RestorePlus™ is that I can actually feel the heat moving away from my body.
The bed itself feels squishy but not like memory foam; it completely adapts to my body in a unique way that I can most closely liken to a waterbed, though this is much more comfortable, pressure relieving, and doesn’t have any “sloshing.”
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Purple, there is no specific weight capacity for the RestorePlus™ mattress, but they do recommend staying below 650 pounds for the total weight.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Loren said this bed felt soft and light on her pressure points. As such, this should be great for petite side sleepers.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – This bed was made for side sleepers thanks to the grid’s pressure relief properties. Because it’s so cushioning around the hips and shoulders, I can see why they put in the zoned coils to protect the spine. Without it, it would sink too much.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Corey tested this mattress for heavyweight side sleepers. He’s a regular side sleeper and said it felt like the grid was pinching him. He also didn’t feel supported around his pressure points.

Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Loren said that her back felt cushioned and she sank in just enough. Lightweight back sleepers should be a good match here.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – As an average-weight person, my lower back sank in more than any other area, and it felt a bit too soft in this position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Our heavyweight testers experienced a lot of sinking while testing for back sleepers. Overall, they didn’t love the softer feel and expected a lot of tossing and turning on this mattress.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Loren noted she was really sinking in while on her stomach, adding that lying face-first into the grid felt odd.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Like Loren, my lower back was sinking down in this position, and I wasn’t comfortable. I could see myself tossing and turning all night.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – When testing this bed for plus-size stomach sleepers, Spencer said stomach sleeping is a no-go on this mattress, adding that the sinking is too much. The grid didn’t feel supportive, especially under his body.

Pressure Relief
5/5
For those who need good pressure relief, the RestorePlus™ may be your new best friend. The grid is made from a polymer gel, so it is super pliable.
When I was lying on it, I could feel it conform to my body’s shape, no matter what position I was in. It removed the pressure from sensitive areas like my hips and shoulders.
Is the RestorePlus™ Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
The RestorePlus™ could be helpful for pain in some cases, especially when pressure relief can help. That said, it wasn’t as supportive for average-weight and heavyweight back sleepers, and it definitely wasn’t for stomach sleeping. A lack of support could make pain worse.
Back Pain
Sleepers with back pain or sciatica should love the pressure relief offered by the RestorePlus™ when lying on their side. However, stomach sleepers with back pain may exacerbate symptoms as the hips will sink too far down into this soft mattress.
Hip Pain
Sleepers with hip pain who sleep on their side will benefit the most from this mattress. It should gently contour to the shape of your hip, alleviating pressure from the area. I’d recommend the Soft firmness level for those with hip pain.
Explore more mattresses for hip pain here.
Shoulder Pain
Often, shoulder pain can be exacerbated by sleeping on your side on a mattress that is too firm. For that reason, the Soft model of this bed should be perfect for side sleepers with shoulder pain. It should cushion the shoulder joint and remove pressure from the sore area.
Find the best mattress for shoulder pain here.
Support
4/5
I felt fully supported while lying on my side and back on this bed. Granted, lying on my side felt more comfortable for me than on my back, but still, in both positions, my spine felt like it was in a good, neutral alignment.
However, on my stomach, my hips dipped too far into the mattress, which, over time, would hurt my back. I think this Soft model of the mattress will be most supportive for light to average-weight side and back sleepers. I’d be curious to see how supportive the Firm version feels for heavier folks and stomach sleepers.
Motion Isolation
3/5
Unfortunately, the RestorePlus™ only received a 3 out of 5 for minimizing motion transfer, which we refer to as “motion isolation.” You can feel lots of movement on this bed, and our seismograph test picked up everything as I switched between my back, stomach, and side. This is something to be aware of for those who share a bed.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
This mattress felt very breathable. While lying on it, I didn’t feel any heat being retained around me. The cover isn’t necessarily “cool-to-the-touch” however, I personally liked that because sometimes a “cool-touch” mattress can feel slimy or have a strange texture. Instead, this bed feels nice and breathable, which should be a plus for hot sleepers seeking a cooler bed.
Bounce
5/5
The RestorePlus™ gets high marks for bounce. I could feel an immediate spring-back from the grid. It’s hard to tell how much of that is from the coils since they are so deep in the mattress, but from a surface perspective, it feels quite bouncy.
Bouncy mattresses are helpful for certain people, such as combination sleepers, people with limited mobility, and sexually active couples. The reason for this is the quicker spring-back can help make repositioning easier.
Edge Support
2.5/5
This score is lower because when I sat on the bed’s edge, I slid right off and sank to the bottom. Therefore, it’s not a good fit for sitting on the edge of the bed. However, I felt pretty securely held when lying down near the edge.
Performance for Couples
3/5
Couples who share a bed tend to look for a few key ingredients in a mattress: solid motion isolation, some bounce for intimacy, good edge support, and a mattress that won’t sleep too hot.
The RestorePlus™ has a couple of qualities going for it: it doesn’t sleep hot, and it’s bouncy. However, overall, I don’t think it’s the best choice for couples due to its poor motion isolation and lack of edge support. You’d likely feel your partner moving throughout the night.

Construction: What’s Inside the Purple RestorePlus™?
All Purple mattresses are constructed using their GelFlex® Grid, which is a gel-based, geometric polymer that provides both cushion and support. The Purple RestorePlus is available in Soft and Firm variations, but I tested the Soft model. This mattress consists of three-zone edge-to-edge coils that provide spine support.
- The top of the mattress has a SoftFlex cover with an antimicrobial and moisture-wicking finish. This cover is breathable and stretchy, which allows for a cooling and soft surface.
- Going deeper, the GelFlex® Grid, Purple’s unique feature, is a geometric polymer that provides pressure relief and cooling properties. The grid cradles pressure points, adapting to the shape of the body.
- Under the grid is the edge support foam, which increases spinal support and mattress durability. This support and durability make it easier to get in and out of bed.
- The next layer of the mattress is an Ultra-Comfort foam that helps the mattress conform to your body as you move. This foam is important for relieving pressure. It also offers temperature balance by dissipating heat.
- The base of the mattress is constructed of three-zone responsive coils that provide spinal support and support airflow. The edge-to-edge 8-inch coils assist the GelFlex Grid in temperature regulation and support.
- The edges of this mattress are designed to not sag due to the edge support system, which intends to extend the lifetime of the mattress. However, as mentioned, I found the edge support to be lacking during testing.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple mattresses don’t tend to have that chemical off-gassing smell that many foam bed-in-a-boxes do. That’s because the gel that they use is non-toxic.
As far as unboxing goes, it was pretty simple. The RestorePlus™ arrives rolled up in a thick plastic cover. The package weighs 154 pounds, and the mattress itself weighs 147 pounds (for a Queen), so it’s a good idea to set this mattress up with a friend.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
- CleanAir GOLD certified – The gel and poly foams in this mattress have received a GOLD rating from Intertek, a third-party quality assurance company. This confirms that certified products will reduce health risks related to chemical exposure and meet the standards of other agencies promoting minimal VOC exposure.

PurpleRestore FAQs
Do I need a base for my RestorePlus mattress?
Yes, you’ll need a base for your RestorePlus™ mattress. Purple recommends one of their platform bed frames or adjustable bases.
However, if you opt for a bed frame outside of Purple, they advise making sure the foundation is made of wood or metal with slats less than three inches apart. The weight capacity should be 650 pounds and up.
Does a Purple mattress feel like a waterbed?
Yes, according to my husband, who is over 6 feet tall and 210 pounds, this Purple mattress feels like a waterbed without actually being a waterbed.
How many years does a Purple mattress last?
According to Purple, their mattresses are designed to last about 10 years with normal use. During this time, you shouldn’t experience any sagging, and if you do, it may be covered by your warranty.

My Verdict
Purple is known for their unique pressure-relieving and cooling GelFlex® Grid. In this mattress, this gel grid lies just beneath the cover, so you’ll feel it right away as you lie down.
I recommend the Soft version of this mattress for lightweight side and back sleepers, along with average-weight side sleepers. I think other sleepers who don’t fit into these groups will probably enjoy the Firm model more since they’ll likely get more support from it.
I also love this bed for solo sleepers more than couples due to its less-than-ideal motion isolation and edge support. Overall, this bed earned a total score of 4 out of 5.
