Puffy Mattress Comparison for 2024

As the brand’s name suggests, Puffy mattresses are soft and cozy but still offer good durability and quality materials. You may be wondering how to pick the best Puffy mattress to suit your needs.

In this article, I’ll highlight details about the Puffy brand as a whole, but I’ll also focus on their three most popular beds: the Puffy Cloud, the Puffy Lux Hybrid, and the Puffy Royal Hybrid. If you’re considering buying a Puffy mattress but don’t know how to narrow down your choices, I’ll weigh all the pros and cons.

Puffy Mattress Comparison: Firmness, Feel, and Construction

Firmness & Feel

Firmness is how soft or hard a mattress feels when lying on it. Here at Sleep Advisor, we rate mattresses on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest.

MattressSleep Advisor Firmness RatingFeelTester Feedback
Puffy Cloud6/10Medium-FirmThe Puffy Cloud is a medium-firm mattress, meaning it caters to a wide range of sleeping positions and body types. This bed feels soft at the pillow top, but your spine should still experience ample support from the mattress.
Puffy Lux Hybrid6.5/10Medium-FirmScoring a 6.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale, the Puffy Lux Hybrid is slightly firmer than the Puffy Cloud, but we’d still consider it a medium-firm bed. This bed toes the line between contouring the body and still maintaining enough alignment for the back and hips.
Puffy Royal Hybrid4/10SoftThe Puffy Royal Hybrid is a soft mattress, which is usually preferred by lightweight folks and side sleepers. While testing it, my colleague, Julia Forbes, said that this soft, plush mattress felt cloud-like, soothing her pressure points.

Mattress Construction

The Puffy Cloud, Lux Hybrid, and Royal Hybrid are similar in that they all feature memory foam, but aside from this, these beds are all unique. While the Puffy Cloud is solely made of foam, both the Lux Hybrid and Royal Hybrid have both foam and coils. Additionally, the Puffy Cloud is 10 inches tall, whereas the Puffy Lux Hybrid stands 12 inches high, and the Puffy Royal Hybrid is even taller at 14 inches tall.

Puffy Mattress Comparison: Testing Performance

Pressure Relief

  • Puffy Cloud Pressure Relief Score: 5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Pressure Relief Score: 5/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Pressure Relief Score: 4/5

We test pressure relief by using a pressure map that shows where on your body there is a lot of pressure buildup versus where there’s little pressure (if any). We also consider whether we can feel noticeable pressure anywhere.

The Puffy Cloud and the Puffy Lux Hybrid exhibited fantastic pressure relief when we tested them, both scoring a 5 out of 5. When I tested the Puffy Cloud, the map was mostly blue and green, meaning there was very little pressure. Similarly, the Puffy Lux Hybrid excels in relieving pressure with its memory foam; Julia didn’t feel any pressure buildup when testing this bed.

The Puffy Royal Hybrid earned a score of 4 out of 5 because even though this mattress relieves pressure well for lightweight and average-weight folks, it doesn’t seem to do as well for heavyweight sleepers.

Support

  • Puffy Cloud Support Score: 3.5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Support Score: 4/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Support Score: 3.5/5

Support is measured by how well a mattress maintains your spine alignment and holds you up in different positions. We test this for side, back, and stomach sleeping.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is the most supportive mattress of the three, scoring a 4 out of 5 because it isn’t quite supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers.

The Puffy Cloud and Puffy Royal Hybrid both are slightly less supportive than the Puffy Lux Hybrid. The Puffy Cloud doesn’t support stomach sleepers or heavyweight folks well, and the Puffy Royal Hybrid fails to support both back sleepers and some stomach sleepers.

Motion Isolation

  • Puffy Cloud Motion Isolation Score: 3.5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Motion Isolation Score: 4/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Motion Isolation Score: 5/5

Each of these mattresses performed differently when we tested motion isolation, which is a mattress’s ability to prevent motion from traveling across the bed when somebody moves. Couples typically prefer a mattress with good motion isolation so one person’s movement does not disturb the other sleeper on their side of the bed. At Sleep Advisor, we test motion isolation using a seismograph to record movement and try to see if we can feel movements when our teammate repositions.

The motion isolation testing chart for the Puffy mattress
Seismograph test for the Puffy Cloud

The Puffy Royal Hybrid outperformed the other two mattresses regarding motion isolation; the combination of foam layers and wrapped coils keeps movement on one side of the bed. When testing the Puffy Lux Hybrid, the seismograph detected the slightest bit of movement, but motion isolation was generally great, so the bed scored a 4 out of 5. Finally, the Puffy Cloud performed just average compared to the other two beds, with bigger waves detected by the seismograph.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

  • Puffy Cloud Cooling Score: 5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Cooling Score: 4/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Cooling Score: 3.5/5

To see how well a mattress regulates temperature and stays cool, we use a temperature gun to measure the temperature of a bed before and after lying on it for five and then 10 minutes. Based on our testing, the Puffy Cloud has the best temperature regulation of the three beds; the mattress only increased 5 degrees after I lay on it for five minutes, and it felt cool to the touch.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid and Puffy Royal Hybrid both have pretty good cooling capabilities, they’re just not as great as the Puffy Cloud’s temperature regulation. The Lux Hybrid’s cooling sensation didn’t last long after lying on the bed, and the Royal Hybrid trapped some heat.

Bounce

  • Puffy Cloud Bounce Score: 4.5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Bounce Score: 4/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Bounce Score: 4/5

All three of these beds performed pretty similarly when it came to bounce, which is another way to describe a bed’s responsiveness.

To measure bounce, we move around on a mattress, but we also drop a lacrosse ball and a medicine ball onto the bed to see how much they bounce.

The Puffy Cloud earned a score of 4.5 out of 5 for bounce because although it performed well, it could be bouncier if it were a hybrid mattress. Both the Lux Hybrid and Royal Hybrid scored a 4 out of 5 for bounce because they were very responsive for how much foam they contained, but the foam still slightly restrained ease of movement.

Edge Support

  • Puffy Cloud Edge Support Score: 2.5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Edge Support Score: 4/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Edge Support Score: 4/5

We test edge support by lying and sitting near and on the edge of a mattress, both for a full minute. If we feel supported, a bed has good edge support, but if we feel like we’re going to slip off or that we’re on the verge of rolling off the bed, we lower the score.

The Lux Hybrid and Royal Hybrid both offer good edge support. Although both of these beds contain memory foam, which is a soft, squishy material, their hybrid nature helps them maintain the desired edge support.

The Cloud, an all-foam mattress, however, doesn’t have good edge support. When Julia sat at the edge to tie her shoes, she felt like she was sliding off the mattress.

Couples

  • Puffy Cloud Couples Score: 3.5/5
  • Puffy Lux Hybrid Couples Score: 4/5
  • Puffy Royal Hybrid Couples Score: 3/5

We measure how well a mattress performs for couples by considering its performance in categories most helpful to co-sleepers, such as motion isolation, temperature regulation, bounce, support, and edge support. We also consider whether its firmness is adequate for two different people and if it has a high enough weight capacity.

Of the three beds, the Puffy Lux Hybrid is our favorite mattress for couples, scoring consistently high across the categories mentioned above. Next, I’d recommend the Puffy Cloud, which earned a score of 3.5 out of 5 because its motion isolation and edge support could be better, yet it excels in firmness and weight capacity. The Puffy Royal Hybrid performs well in some areas like motion isolation and edge support but lacks the bounce that some sexually active couples desire.

Puffy Mattress Comparison FAQs

Which Puffy mattress is the most firm?

Of the Puffy mattresses, the Puffy Lux Hybrid is the most firm, with a 6.5 out of 10 firmness rating.

Is Puffy a good mattress brand for side sleepers?

Yes, Puffy is a good mattress brand for most side sleepers, but we wouldn’t recommend them for heavier side sleepers over 230 pounds based on feedback from our testing team.

Do Puffy mattresses get softer over time?

Puffy mattresses may feel slightly softer over time because, like most mattresses that contain memory foam, your body weight and heat will likely soften the foam materials.

What is the firmness of a Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress?

We rated the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress a 6.5 out of 10 for firmness, which means it is a medium-firm mattress.

Our Final Thoughts on Puffy Mattresses

We recommend the Puffy Cloud to lightweight and average-weight sleepers and people with joint pain. The Puffy Lux Hybrid is probably your best bet if you’re a lightweight side or back sleeper, a couple, or sleep hot. Lastly, pick the Puffy Royal Hybrid if you love memory foam, experience back pain, or are light-to-average-weight.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Along with me, other testers for these beds included Julia Forbes, Loren Bullock, and Spencer Bland. Julia provided feedback as an average-weight tester, while Loren is a petite tester and Spencer a heavyweight tester.

We used a combination of subjective experiences and tech tools to gather enough information to rate these beds in specific categories like cooling, pressure relief, motion isolation, and more. For more information on how we test and score mattresses, check out our product review process
