Naturepedic was established in 2003 when founder Barry Cik struggled to find a non-toxic mattress for his grandchild’s crib. The company specializes in certified organic mattresses for babies, kids, and adults. They use natural materials – rather than synthetic foams – and have a significant focus on sustainability in manufacturing.
The 10-inch Naturepedic Chorus innerspring is the brand’s entry-level mattress, found in the Traditional series, which also features the Serenade latex hybrid. It’s affordable and suitable for a wide range of sleepers, so could this be the firm organic mattress you’ve been looking for? If you’re a stomach or back sleeper, you’ll definitely want to read on.

Who We Recommend The Naturepedic Chorus For:
- Eco-conscious shoppers – With its natural and organic materials and multiple eco-friendly certifications, the Naturepedic Chorus is a great choice for shoppers seeking a planet-friendly, non-toxic mattress.
- Stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers require a lot of support to keep the hips lifted, and the Naturepedic Chorus certainly offers that, with its 8 out of 10 firmness rating. This should keep your spine in its correct alignment, reducing the risk of aches and pains.
- Back sleepers with a preference for firm mattresses – We think this firm mattress is a great choice for back sleepers, especially those who prefer their bed on the firmer side. However, back sleepers who like a bit more cushioning will probably be more comfortable on a hybrid.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Naturepedic Chorus For:
- Side sleepers – Side sleepers usually steer towards plusher mattresses to give them cushioning at potentially sensitive areas like the hips and shoulders, and we felt that this mattress didn’t offer enough pressure relief for people who sleep on their side.
- People with joint pain – We don’t think this mattress offers enough pressure relief for those with sensitive joints. You’ll likely find more relief on a memory foam mattress, or check out our mattresses for arthritis pain and hip and shoulder pain.
- Vegans – The Naturepedic Chorus contains wool, making it unsuitable for vegan shoppers. If you’re vegan and looking for an organic mattress, the Naturepedic EOS Classic has a vegan option, or check out the Avocado Green mattress, which can also be made vegan.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 8/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
Mattress firmness is an important factor when choosing a new mattress, and we rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is the most firm. We consider the Naturepedic Chorus to be an 8 out of 10, which is very firm, considering the industry standard for medium-firm is 6.5.
This firmer feel comes from the main coil unit, which provides a lot of support for the sleeper. We think this bed could especially suit stomach sleepers (who tend to require extra support in the hip area) and back sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress.
How Does It Feel?
The organic cotton cover feels soft, durable, and cool to the touch. While this mattress isn’t the bounciest on the market, it does have an element of bounce thanks to the dual coil units, which should suit combination sleepers well.
You should feel ‘on top of’ the mattress rather than ‘stuck’ in it, allowing you to change positions with more ease. However, this does mean it’s not that cushioned, which could be an issue for side sleepers.
What We Like About the Naturepedic Chorus
- Durability – This mattress is made with hard-wearing materials like PLA (a plant-derived material that’s known for its durability) and quality craftsmanship, meaning it should last for years to come.
- Made in the USA – Naturepedic does use some imported materials, but they’re all sourced from certified organic facilities, and the bed itself is handcrafted by Amish craftspeople in the United States.
- Affordability – Organic beds are often known for their high price tags, but the Naturepedic Chorus is the brand’s cheapest bed, offering a planet-friendly, natural product for a rather affordable price.
Our Naturepedic Chorus Complaints
- No white glove delivery – While the Naturepedic Chorus is designed for an easy setup, the box may be too heavy for one person to carry from their front door. This could be an issue for those who live alone and don’t have anyone available to help them at the time of delivery.
- High motion transfer – Motion isolation is somewhat lacking, which is to be expected from a spring mattress with this level of bounce. This is something to consider if you’re a light sleeper who shares a bed with a restless partner, child, or pet.
Testing the Naturepedic Chorus Mattress: How it Performed
Our reviews are based on in-person testing, so we can give you all the details needed to make an informed decision. This includes analyzing features like motion isolation, cooling, edge support, and bounce. We also make sure to see how supportive and pressure-relieving the mattress is in each sleep position.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Naturepedic Chorus has differing weight limits, depending on the size of the bed. Twin and Twin XL sizes can support a total weight of 325 pounds, a Full can hold 450 pounds, a Queen can manage 550 pounds, and the King or California King has a maximum weight limit of 700 pounds.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – We don’t recommend this bed for lightweight side sleepers, who will likely find it far too firm. You could find your hips and shoulders digging into the bed, causing a buildup of pressure.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Again, this bed isn’t a great choice for average-weight side sleepers, who will require more cushioning at the shoulders and hips.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier side sleepers could find themselves sinking too far into the coiled comfort layer, causing discomfort and a buildup of pressure. A bed with more cushioning is advised.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight sleepers usually experience mattresses as firmer than those who weigh more, which could make this mattress a great choice for lightweight back sleepers who love an incredibly firm mattress. However, those who prefer a bit more cushioning may find themselves uncomfortable.
- Average Weight Sleepers – We think this mattress could be fantastic for average-weight back sleepers, as it’s firm enough to keep the lumbar lifted and the spine in healthy alignment. However, back sleepers who prefer a medium-firm feel may find this too firm.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers should find they get enough support on this mattress to keep everything in alignment, though they may experience it as softer than their lighter counterparts, so if you’re heavier and prefer an extra-firm mattress for back sleeping, this may not be the one for you.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers need a super supportive mattress to stop their hips from sagging, and lightweight front sleepers should find themselves ‘on top of’ this bed, with their spine in healthy alignment.
- Average Weight Sleepers – We feel that average-weight stomach sleepers should do well on this mattress, as it provides great support for the hip area in this sleeping position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavier stomach sleepers will likely feel well-supported on the Naturepedic Chorus, as it should be firm enough to keep everything lifted and in alignment, avoiding aches and pains.
Pressure Relief & Pain
When lying on a mattress, pressure can potentially build up at the hips, lower back, and shoulder, causing tension. We found the Naturepedic Chorus offered good pressure relief when sleeping on the back or stomach. However, due to its firm nature, we experienced some pressure at the hips and shoulders when lying on our side, which doesn’t make this the best choice for side sleepers.
Back Pain – We found our weight was evenly distributed when sleeping on our back, and we felt well-supported, with comfortable cushioning in the lumbar area provided by the quilted cover. We’d recommend this firm mattress for stomach and back sleepers who experience back pain.
Hip Pain – Stomach sleepers with hip pain could benefit from the Naturepedic Chorus, as they should experience fantastic support in the hip area, keeping everything in alignment. However, side sleepers will likely find there’s not enough sinkage, which could cause discomfort.
Shoulder Pain – We think this mattress is too firm for strict side sleepers – especially those already experiencing shoulder pain – as the firm feel could cause a buildup of pressure in the shoulder area.
Support
A mattress with adequate support is essential for good spine health; when lying on a bed, you want to feel that your spine is in a neutral position and aligned with the rest of your body. Good spine alignment is essential for avoiding any aches and pains when you wake up in the morning.
The Naturepedic Chorus offers fantastic support thanks to its two coil units, and stomach and back sleepers of all weights should feel pleasantly supported and lightly cushioned. The firmness level of this bed means that you’ll feel like you’re sleeping ‘on top of’ the bed rather than sinking deeply into it.
Motion Transfer
Motion isolation is something to consider if you share a bed and tend to wake up if you feel your partner, pet, or child moving around or getting in and out of bed. As expected from a bouncy innerspring bed, motion transfer was quite high, although we were expecting it to be higher than it was, considering the design of the bed. This could be an issue for light sleepers with restless partners.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
The Naturepedic Chorus has multiple cooling materials that increase its ability to regulate body temperature. First, there’s the breathable cotton cover, followed by moisture-wicking wool batting, which is naturally great at keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.
Sugarcane-derived PLA in the quilting offers further moisture-wicking capabilities, while the dual coil units help to promote airflow and breathability. We think this mattress will keep most sleepers at a comfortable temperature.
Performance for Couples
Couples sharing a bed have different needs than solo sleepers when it comes to buying a mattress. This bed is suitable for all body weights, which makes it versatile, although if one of you is a strict side sleeper, this bed won’t be a good choice.
Couples wanting a responsive mattress for sex may love the bounce on this one, although the trade-off for the bounciness is that there are higher levels of motion transfer. This could be an issue for light sleepers who share with a restless partner, or one who gets in and out of bed at different times to them.
The Naturepedic Chorus also has great edge support, so you can both spread out and use the whole surface area of the bed.

Preference-based Features
Great Edge Support
The Naturepedic Chorus has good edge support thanks to a perimeter wall of organic cotton fabric that’s built around the main coil unit. This should allow couples to spread out and use the whole surface area of the mattress and may help those with limited mobility get in and out of bed more securely.
Eco-Conscious Materials
Naturepedic prides itself on being one of the most sustainable and healthy mattress brands, having a strong focus on environmental sustainability. The Naturepedic Chorus contains certified organic materials like cotton and wool.
Adjustable Base Compatible
This bed can be used on just about any base, including an adjustable base. If you’re using a slatted base, ensure that the slats are no more than 3 inches apart.
Construction: What’s Inside the Naturepedic Chorus?
The Naturepedic Chorus is a 10-inch certified organic and non-toxic innerspring mattress, made with natural materials like cotton, wool, and PLA, instead of synthetic items like poly foam, memory foam, and gel foam. It starts with a breathable organic cotton cover that’s naturally soft and cooling.
- Quilted to the cover is a layer of organic cotton, organic wool batting, and PLA. PLA is a plant-based fiber that’s made from non-GMO sugarcane and is known for its moisture-wicking abilities. The wool provides further moisture-wicking as well as temperature regulation and is naturally fire-retardant, avoiding the need for harsh chemicals. This layer offers a bit of bounce as well as soft support.
- The comfort layer is made from 1.5-inch tall individually-wrapped micro coils, providing body contouring, pressure relief, and breathability. The coils are made without any glue or adhesives.
- The transition layer features organic cotton batting made with cotton grown in the U.S. from USDA-certified sources. This layer gives the micro coils something to bounce off of, and it eases the sleeper into the firmer support layer below.
- The support layer is made from 8-inch tall individually-pocketed coils, which are made without glue/adhesives just like the micro coils. This layer provides firmness, support, bounce, and airflow. The coil unit has a perimeter of organic cotton fabric and fill, offering edge support without the use of synthetic foams.
- A base layer of organic cotton batting provides support for the coil unit above.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Naturepedic Chorus arrives compressed in a box and once unboxed, can take up to 72 hours to fully expand, although it can be slept on right away. Organic mattresses don’t off-gas in the same way that other bed-in-a-box mattresses do.
While there might be a stale air smell when unboxed, there won’t be an unpleasant and lingering chemical odor, which is great news for people with sensitive noses. This also means you can jump straight on your new mattress for a nap.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – Naturepedic mattresses are Made Safe® certified and have passed tests to ensure they don’t contain harmful materials or release any gasses, vapors, or byproducts that could negatively impact your health. They’re also UL/GREENGUARD certified for low chemical emissions and have been verified as being formaldehyde-free.

Overall Summary
The Naturepedic Chorus could be a great choice for back and stomach sleepers, combination sleepers, and couples who are looking for an eco-friendly, organic, and non-toxic firm mattress.
Side Sleepers
1/5
We don’t recommend this mattress for strict side sleepers, as it’s too firm and doesn’t have enough cushioning to provide the necessary pressure relief – you’re likely to feel jammed up at the shoulders. We recommend a softer mattress – or one with a plush comfort layer – for side sleepers.
Back Sleepers
4/5
Light to average-weight back sleepers who love a firm mattress could really get on with this bed, as it should keep the lumbar lifted, keeping everything in alignment. Heavyweight back sleepers will likely find this mattress feels softer than advertised – you should feel supported, but those who prefer a firmer bed may not find this the best choice.
Stomach Sleepers
5/5
We think this mattress is a great choice for stomach sleepers in all weight categories, as it should be firm enough to provide sufficient support for all. You should feel your hips sinking far enough into the comfort layer to provide a little cushioning, while still staying in alignment with the rest of the spine.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
This mattress has an ‘on top of’ the bed feel and plenty of bounce, making it great for combination sleepers. While sleepers of all weights who switch from their back to their front should feel comfortable, if you spend a lot of the night on your side, you may find there isn’t enough pressure relief.
Couples
3/5
Couples who love a firm bed may get on well with this mattress, as it has good bounce and edge support, and it sleeps fairly cool. However, the mattress did have higher levels of motion transfer, which won’t be ideal for light sleepers who share with a partner that tosses and turns a lot during the night.
Heavy Sleepers
4/5
Heavyweight stomach and back sleepers should feel comfortably supported and cushioned on this mattress, although some back sleepers may prefer a firmer offering. We don’t recommend this mattress for heavy side sleepers, who will likely experience uncomfortable pressure buildup at the hips and shoulders.
Lightweight Sleepers
3/5
Back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds should find this mattress pleasantly firm, offering support in all the right places. However, some back sleepers may prefer something a little softer. Lightweight side sleepers should look into something with more cushioning, to provide the necessary pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Sleepers
4/5
Average-weight stomach and back sleepers should find a good amount of support and cushioning on this firm mattress, although some back sleepers may prefer to sleep on something slightly softer. We don’t recommend this bed for average-weight side sleepers, who will likely experience uncomfortable pressure buildup at the hips and shoulders – a softer mattress is advised.
Overall Value
4/5
The Naturepedic Chorus is a high-quality yet relatively affordable organic and sustainable mattress. The brand goes above and beyond by offering an extended 25-year warranty deal, which is more than double what some other brands offer. While they don’t offer white glove delivery, we think their use of durable and eco-friendly materials still makes this bed a great find.
Our Verdict
If you’re in the market for a firm mattress that’s also non-toxic, eco-friendly, and organic, then the Naturepedic Chorus should be on your radar. Stomach and back sleepers should love the firm support, combination sleepers could be swayed by the good bounce, and some couples might be interested in the responsiveness, good edge support, and cooling materials.
However, side sleepers should steer clear and seek out a more plush offering to avoid discomfort. All in all, this is a good value, high-quality, entry-level organic bed that should last for years to come. The best part of this eco-friendly bed is that the planet – and your health – won’t be compromised.
