Decoding Mattress Warranties: Understanding Terms & Conditions

Mattress warranties are probably not at the top of the list of the factors you consider when purchasing a mattress, but understanding the conditions of a mattress warranty can help inform your decision and especially come in handy if you have any issues with your mattress down the line.

Understanding a mattress warranty isn’t always easy. Decoding the terms and conditions can be tricky work. Sometimes, even finding the warranty for your mattress can be a huge task in itself.

Because being able to understand your mattress warranty is such an important part of the mattress buying process, we took the time to make it simple for you. We’ll explain what a mattress warranty is, some of the key terminology associated with warranties, and break down mattress warranties from some of the most popular brands and retailers.

What Is a Mattress Warranty?

A mattress warranty is a guarantee from the manufacturer to repair or replace a mattress with physical defects within a certain period of time. Warranties can differ by brand, retailer, and model, so it’s important to understand the exact terms of the warranty of your mattress.

Mattress warranties also have unique determinations of what qualifies as a physical defect, and under certain conditions a warranty can be voided. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations require that sellers make their warranties available to consumers while shopping. The FTC also defines different types of warranties as listed below:

  • Written Warranties: Not required by law, but common with most products.
  • Spoken Warranties: An oral promise from a salesperson; not guaranteed.
  • Implied Warranties: Protected by state law in all 50 states and comes with nearly every purchase; either a warrant of merchantability or a warrant of fitness for a particular purpose:
    • Warrant of Merchantability: Seller promises the product will do what it should do (ex. A toaster will toast)
    • Warrant of Fitness for a Particular Purpose: Applies when you purchase a product for a particular purpose the seller advises it is suitable for (ex. A zero-degree sleeping bag should be suitable for zero-degree temperatures)

A mattress warranty is important because it protects your purchase in cases of manufacturing defects. If you purchase a mattress with faulty innerspring coils that cause the mattress to sag very quickly, the product didn’t do what it was supposed to do. A mattress warranty can cover repairs and replacements for defected mattresses.

Prorated vs. Non-prorated Mattress Warranties

A mattress warranty can be prorated, non-prorated, or a combination of both in the time period that the warranty covers. A non-prorated mattress warranty means that any eligible repairs or replacements will be covered 100% by the seller. A prorated mattress warranty only covers the remaining portion of the warranty.

For example, if you purchase a mattress with a 10-year warranty and it becomes faulty after 5 years, any eligible repairs or replacements will only be covered by 50%. If it becomes faulty after 8 years, it will only cover 20% and so on.

Some mattress warranties use a combination of both prorated and non-prorated warranties during the term of the warranty. For example, you may have a 10-year warranty that is non-prorated for the first five years and prorated for the last five, meaning you have 100% coverage for the first half of the term. It’s common to see these combinations in warranty policies.

Mattress Warranty vs Sleep Trial

A mattress warranty is not the same thing as a sleep trial period. Oftentimes, mattress companies will offer a sleep trial period during which you have a certain time period to return the mattress for a partial or full refund if you are unsatisfied with the product. Sleep trials can have their own terms and conditions to make you eligible for a refund.

What Does a Mattress Warranty Cover?

Some of the most common defects mattress warranties cover include mattress sagging and faulty manufacturing such as split seams, broken handles, or damaged coils. Sagging is the most common problem that occurs, but most warranties have a specific threshold for sagging before they will replace it. For instance, some warranties require that the mattress sag at least one and a half inches before the warranty will apply.

What Does a Mattress Warranty NOT Cover?

Mattress warranties vary by brand, distributor, and model, but there are a few common things that mattress warranties typically do not cover, including:

  • Sagging below the determined threshold
  • User-inflicted damage
  • Natural wear and tear
  • Comfort-based complaints with no definitive defect (too lumpy, too stiff, etc.)

What Voids a Mattress Warranty?

Warranties are great for the consumer because they protect your investment from mistakes made on the part of the manufacturer. However, they aren’t ironclad. It is possible to “void” your warranty.

What does it mean to void a mattress warranty? It means that you have done something that violates the terms of the warranty, which means it is no longer valid. Basically, if the manufacturer can prove you’ve done something explicitly forbidden in the warranty, they do not have to refund or replace your mattress.

Some of the most common factors that effectively void a mattress warranty include:

  • Removing the law tag
  • Transferring ownership
  • Customer misuse (failing to use proper support, stains, rips, etc.)
  • Stains or discoloration
  • Failure to remove the mattress from its shipping materials quickly enough
  • Failure to flip mattress on a specified schedule

Ashley Furniture

Length of the warranty: 10 year limited warranty

What the Ashley Furniture mattress warranty covers:

  • Memory foam and gel mattresses with body impressions greater than three-quarters of one inch (¾”) in depth
  • Innerspring mattresses with body impressions greater than one and one-half inches (1 ½”) in depth

What the Ashley Furniture mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Fabric issues: stained, soiled, or burned
  • Bent border wires (those that run along the perimeter of the mattress) damages caused by moving or bending
  • Mattress damage caused by using an improper bed frame or foundation
  • Memory foam and gel mattresses with body impressions less than three-quarters of one inch (¾”) in depth
  • Innerspring mattresses with impressions less than one and one-half inches (1 ½”) in depth
  • The zippered mattress cover after two years of purchase
  • Comfort preferences
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Ashley Furniture mattress warranty?

The key factor for Ashley Furniture mattresses is that you support the mattress on a proper bed frame or foundation. If you fail to provide proper support to the mattress, the warranty will no longer be effective. According to Ashley Furniture, bed frames must have a rigid center support having at least 5 legs and 3 cross slats.

The Fine Print

  • The Power Foundation Frame and Power Foundation Mechanism warranties only cover replacement parts.
  • Ashley will repair or replace products that are covered during the warranty period upon examination.
  • Refunds are not available.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, contact the Ashley-authorized retailer from whom you originally purchased the mattress. You will need the original bill of sale (receipt), product serial number, and the law label. Keep in mind the warranty period ends 10 years after the date of purchase.  You may also be required to provide evidence of using an approved foundation with your mattress.

Beautyrest

Length of the warranty: 1-10-year limited warranty, depending on mattress

What the Beautyrest mattress warranty covers:

  • Faults in materials in mattress or mattress cover
  • Manufacturing defects in mattress or mattress cover
  • Body impressions greater than three-fourths of an inch (¾”) for some mattresses, and one and one-half inches for others (1 ½”)

What the Beautyrest mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Comfort preferences
  • Cover and handles
  • Bent border or grid wires
  • Fabric issues like burns, stains, or tears
  • Vermin infestations
  • Mattresses sold outside the 50 United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or US Virgin Islands
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Beautyrest mattress warranty?

It is possible to void your Beautyrest mattress warranty by failing to follow proper use guidelines, which mainly focus on providing your mattress with a supportive frame and foundation. The proper use guidelines state that to prevent voiding your warranty, you need a frame with center support legs, and if the frame is slatted, it must be made with five hardwood or metal slats. If using a platform bed, make sure there is a solid platform on top of slats that are further apart than 2 inches. If you do not have a solid platform on top, the slats must be closer together than 2 inches, or you will void the warranty.

The Fine Print

  • These details may differ for mattresses purchased before March 2015.
  • You must check your warranty code (found on the law label) to determine how long the warranty is for and how deep body impressions have to be to warrant a claim.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, you’ll need to contact your Beautyrest mattress dealer. If they are no longer in business, you need to contact Simmons Customer Service directly at customerassistance@simmons.com.

You must have your original receipt, the model number of the mattress, and the law label in order to file a claim. Once you contact either your dealer or customer service, someone will walk you through the rest of the process.

Casper

Length of the warranty: 10-year limited warranty

What the Casper mattress warranty covers:

  • Indentations in the mattress greater than one inch (1”)
  • Splitting or cracking in the memory foam
  • Defective zipper on the mattress cover

What the Casper mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Indentations caused by improper bed frame or foundation
  • Increased softness in the memory foam
  • Comfort preferences
  • Fabric issues like burns, stains, rips, or cuts
  • Damage to mattresses used for commercial use, like in hotels (unless you are a Trade Customer)
  • Replacement of non-defective pieces; if one particular part of the mattress is defective, Casper will replace that part, and that part only
  • Any mattress sold by a reseller or retailer that is not authorized to sell Casper
  • Any mattress sold “as-is,” “used,” or under other terms that indicate it isn’t new

What voids the Casper mattress warranty?

There are a few ways to void your Casper mattress warranty, but the most common mistake people make is failing to support the mattress with a proper foundation. Casper says their mattresses are designed to work on a solid surface bed base, and if the mattress is used in an a way it is not designed to (AKA, with a slatted bed frame), then the warranty is voided. You can also void your warranty by selling the mattress or using it in a commercial setting without being an official Trade Customer.

The Fine Print

  • You must keep a copy of your receipt as proof of purchase.
  • If you need a replacement mattress cover, it may come in a different color than the one you originally had.
  • With this warranty, you can choose to upgrade your mattress by replacing it with a newer model, but you will have to pay the difference in price.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, contact Casper via email at support@casper.com. You will need your order number which should be available on your receipt, and a Casper support member will walk you through the rest of the process from there. You will have to ship your mattress back to Casper, but you are not responsible for any of the shipping costs.

Costco

Length of the warranty: Unlimited returns

What the Costco return policy covers:

  • Any mattress bought at a Costco warehouse or Costco online
  • Mattress can be returned any time for full purchase-price refund
  • Manufacturer warranty may apply to the mattress, in which case the terms of the warranty are defined by the manufacturer

What the Costco return policy does not cover:

  • Although the return policy website doesn’t say anything about damage, we have to assume that any severely damaged mattress will not be accepted for a return

What voids the Costco return policy?

As always, if the legal tag on your mattress has been tampered with or removed, then the mattress cannot be returned, but otherwise, Costco seems to accept any mattress for returns.

The Fine Print

  • If you are a member of Costco, you don’t need to keep your receipt, since receipt of your mattress purchase is available through your card.
  • Before purchasing, make sure you determine whether the mattress is covered under the manufacturer’s warranty, Costco’s return policy, or both.

Claim Procedure

If you would like to return your Costco mattress, you have several options. If you have a membership, you can start the returns process online through your member account. Simply click “Return Items” and the site will guide you from there. If you are not a member or would prefer not to start the process online, you can bring your mattress to any Costco warehouse, not just the one you bought it from. If you aren’t close to a Costco warehouse, you can also ship the mattress back and your shipping fees will be covered in the refund.

Denver Mattress

Length of the warranty: 10-15-year limited warranty, depending on the mattress

What the Denver mattress warranty covers:

  • Coils, modules, or wires that have broken or are poking through the fabric
  • Body impressions greater than or equal to one and one-half inches (1 ½”)
  • Sagging (as long as the bed has been supported)

What the Denver mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Fabric issues like stains, burns, or tears not related to broken coils
  • Comfort preferences
  • Damage caused by improper frames or foundations
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Denver mattress warranty?

It is possible to void your Denver mattress warranty by failing to use the proper foundation with the mattress. Denver officially recommends using a foundation with center posts, with 5 legs for a queen-size mattress and 6 legs for a king.

The Fine Print

  • Be sure to check your specific warranty or call the manufacturer, since the length of time and specific details of what is and isn’t covered may differ based on the mattress and when you bought it.
  • Denver mattresses also come with a 4 month return policy, but in order to return the mattress, it must not be damaged at all.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, contact the retail store where you purchased the mattress and let them know you’d like to file a claim. Make sure you have saved your receipt and the law label is either still attached to the mattress or kept in a safe place with the receipt, to ensure proof-of-purchase. The retailer will walk you through the rest of the claim process.

Helix

Length of the warranty: 10-year limited for Helix mattresses, 15-year limited for Helix LUXE and Helix Plus

What the Helix mattress warranty covers:

  • Body indentations greater than or equal to one inch (1”)
  • Splitting or cracking in the foam
  • Any defect in the mattress cover
  • A defect in the springs

What the Helix mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Comfort preferences
  • Fabric issues like stains, burns, and tears
  • Any mattresses not sold by authorized Helix sellers
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Helix mattress warranty?

Helix does not provide specifications for what voids the warranty, but to be safe, make sure you use a solid bed frame and a foundation if necessary.

The Fine Print

  • If you file a claim on the mattress cover, you may receive a new version in a different color from the one you had originally.
  • If the mattress is found to have a defect, Helix will reimburse you for up to $100 for shipping costs.

Claim Procedure

You can start your warranty claim by reaching out to Helix via email at info@helixsleep.com. From there, someone will guide you through the rest of the process. Just make sure you still have your receipt and that the law label is still attached to your mattress.

Ikea Mattresses

Length of the warranty: 25-year limited warranty

What the Ikea mattress warranty covers:

  • Springs in spring mattresses
  • Foam core in foam mattresses
  • Latex core in latex mattresses
  • Wooden frame, slats, and springs in various bed frames and foundations

What the Ikea mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Sofa bed mattresses
  • Mattress toppers
  • Children’s mattresses
  • Any mattress that has not been installed, used, or stored improperly

What voids the Ikea mattress warranty?

Ikea doesn’t explicitly state what voids their warranty, but it does mention that mattresses must be cleaned properly according to their care and cleaning guidelines, so it’s possible that failure to follow these guidelines could result in voiding the warranty. To be safe, it’s a good idea to ask what voids the warranty when you buy the mattress.

The Fine Print

  • If Ikea no longer makes the mattress when you file a claim, they can send you an “equivalent replacement” without taking into account whether you think it’s truly equivalent or not.
  • Ikea states that although they offer a 25-year warranty, they still recommend replacing your mattress every 8-10 years due to regular wear and tear, so they might not accept warranty claims based on body indentations or sagging.
  • You must have proof-of-purchase (your receipt) in order for your warranty to be valid.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, you’ll need to contact your local Ikea store over the phone. An Ikea representative can help you through the claim process from there.

Kingsdown

Length of the warranty: 1-30-year limited, depending on the mattress or mattress product

What the Kingsdown mattress warranty covers:

  • Sagging or body indentation greater than or equal to one inch (1”) for non-quilted mattresses or one and one-half inches (1 ½”) for quilted mattresses

What the Kingsdown mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Fabric issues like burns, tears, and stains
  • Handles
  • Comfort preferences
  • Mattresses sold “as is”
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Kingsdown mattress warranty?

There are a lot of things that can void a Kingsdown mattress warranty, so before purchasing, be sure you understand the dos and don’ts. First, if your mattress is not well-supported, the warranty is void. The mattress must be supported by a box spring or foundation and the bed frame must have a center support leg. Second, you cannot stain your mattress. If the mattress is found to be in “unsanitary condition,” the warranty could be voided. The last big one is the law label. You are technically allowed to remove it, but you must keep it. If you can’t produce proof-of-purchase and the law label, your warranty will be void.

The Fine Print

  • Some Kingsdown mattress warranties are prorated, some are not. Be sure to check the product label for your warranty code to determine whether your warranty is prorated or not.
  • If you purchase a Kingsdown mattress from a retailer rather than directly from Kingsdown, the Kingsdown warranty takes precedence over any warranty the retailer may provide.
  • You will pay the full cost of shipping to have your mattress repaired or replaced.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim with Kingsdown, contact the retailer from whom you bought the mattress. If the retailer has gone out of business, you can contact Kingsdown directly at Kingsdown, Inc. P.O. • Physical abuse of the mattress, such as stains, burns, or tears
  • Damage caused by using an improper bed frame or foundation
  • Any mattress sold by a non-authorized retailer of Leesa mattresses, or any mattress sold “as is”
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Leesa mattress warranty?

The Leesa mattress warranty is voided if you sell the mattress to someone else, or if the mattress leaves the US, Canada, or the UK.

The Fine Print

  • If you file a claim on the mattress cover and Leesa sends you a replacement, it may be a different color.
  • If you decide to upgrade your mattress when filing a claim, a new warranty will be created for the upgraded mattress.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim with Leesa, you must have proof-of-purchase. • After 10 years, if you file a claim there is a $50 shipping fee each way, but if a defect is detected, the fee will be waived.

  • If you aren’t satisfied with your mattress purchased from Sam’s Club, they will replace it or refund it in most cases.

What the Sam’s Club satisfaction guarantee does not cover:

  • The Sam’s Club satisfaction guarantee is not the same as a manufacturer’s warranty and does not necessarily cover the same issues, like severe body indentations

What voids the Sam’s Club satisfaction guarantee?

Much of the Sam’s Club 100% Satisfaction Guarantee is up to the sole discretion of Sam’s Club, so there aren’t strict guidelines on what might void the guarantee when it comes to mattresses. The best way to find out is to contact your local Sam’s Club and see what they are willing to do to work with you.

The Fine Print

  • You must have the original packaging for a full refund.
  • Shipping and delivery charges will not be refunded unless you are returning the mattress due to damage done during delivery.

Claim Procedure

If you want to return or replace your mattress through Sam’s Club’s 100% satisfaction guarantee rather than through the manufacturer warranty, you can call the Member Center at (888) 746-7726 or login to your member account on samsclub.com.

Sealy

Length of the warranty: Depends on the mattress

What the Sealy mattress warranty covers:

  • Body indentations or sagging greater than or equal to one and one-half inches (1 ½”) for latex or innerspring mattresses or three-fourths of an inch (¾”) for memory foam mattresses
  • Damage to the mattress not caused by misuse or abuse

What the Sealy mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Comfort preferences
  • Abuse or damage to the mattress, such as burns, tears, or stains
  • Damage associated with an inappropriate bed frame or foundation
  • Floor models or mattress sold by non-authorized sellers or sold “as is”

What voids the Sealy mattress warranty?

Your Sealy mattress warranty will be void if you use the wrong foundation or bed frame, which could lead to mattress damage that is not the fault of the manufacturer. Sealy mattresses are meant to be used on solid, flat, non-spring foundations, and if you use a different type of foundation or bed frame, the warranty may be void.

The Fine Print

  • These conditions apply only to mattresses purchased after 2013. If you purchased your Sealy mattress between 2008 and 2013, from 2003 to 2007, or before June of 2003, then the conditions for your warranty may be different.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, all you have to do is visit sealy.com, click on “Warranty Information,” and then click on “File a Warranty Claim.” Using your original receipt, you can then enter your Warranty Participation Code and the website will give you directions from there.

Sears

Length of the warranty: 30 day return policy

What the Sears return policy covers:

  • You can return a mattress for any reason, but pick up and restocking fees will apply unless the product is defective
  • Sears does not specify what counts as “defective”

What the Sears return policy does not cover:

  • Kmart items sold on the Sears website

What voids the Sears return policy?

The only way the return policy might be voided is if more than 30 days have passed since purchasing the mattress, or if you have inflicted some damage.

The Fine Print

  • Mattresses sold at Sears have manufacturer’s warranties unless they are sold “as is” and the manufacturer warranty is a more comprehensive, long-lasting option if something goes wrong with your mattress.
  • For returns, the mattress must be in its original packaging.
  • Exchanges are typically not allowed. Instead, you will have to return the mattress, get a refund, and buy a new one.
  • If you purchased your mattress at a Sears outlet, it must be returned to that outlet, and cannot be returned to a regular Sears store.

Claim Procedure

To return your Sears mattress, you simply have to call to schedule a pick up. When you call, you’ll need the sales check number and the phone number used to call and order the mattress originally. The pick up number is 1-800-732-7747.

Serta

Length of the warranty: 1-20-year limited warranty, depending on the mattress

What the Serta mattress warranty covers:

  • Body impressions or sagging greater than or equal to three-fourths of an inch (¾”) or one and one-half inches (1 ½”) depending on the mattress
  • Loose, broken, or protruding wires in innerspring or hybrid mattresses
  • Handles
  • Zippers on the mattress cover

What the Serta mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Comfort preferences
  • Fabric issues like stains, burns, rips, and tears
  • Damage due to improper foundation
  • Normal change in softness of foam over time
  • Inspection costs
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Serta mattress warranty?

Using a bed frame or foundation without center support posts can void the Serta mattress warranty. The warranty may also be void if the mattress is found to be in unsanitary condition, meaning it has been stained with blood or other bodily fluids, or if it shows signs of abuse, like other stains or burns. The warranty is also void when the original purchaser no longer owns the mattress.

The Fine Print

  • Serta only replaces the defective part of the mattress rather than giving you an all-new mattress when you file a claim.
  • Stains can void your warranty, but certain cleaning supplies can damage the mattress in a way that also voids the warranty. Before cleaning your mattress, be sure you read the care instructions.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim on your Serta mattress, start by contacting the dealer from which you bought the mattress. If the dealer cannot be reached for whatever reason, you can reach out to Serta customer service at 888-55-SERTA. A representative will walk you through the rest of the process, but make sure you have your proof-of-purchase.

Simmons

Length of the warranty: 10-year limited warranty or 7-year limited warranty, depending on the mattress

What the Simmons mattress warranty covers:

  • Body impressions greater than one and one-half inches (1 ½”)
  • Manufacturing errors that result in the mattress being the wrong size (with a forgiveness window of 2 cm in width and length)

What the Simmons mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Comfort preferences
  • Damage caused by an improper bed frame or foundation
  • Bent border or grid wires
  • Dust mites or bed bugs
  • Any mattress used for commercial use
  • Any mattress sold “as is” or sold by a non-authorized Simmons seller
  • Inspection costs
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Simmons mattress warranty?

If your mattress exhibits signs of abuse, such as burns, rips, tears, or stains, it may void the Simmons mattress warranty. The warranty is also void as soon as ownership transfers away from the original purchaser.

The Fine Print

  • If you move, Simmons must move the mattress from your old home to your new home in order to maintain the warranty.
  • The Simmons mattress warranty is prorated. The first two years (for the 10- or 7-year warranties) are covered completely, but in the following years, repairs or replacements will have some cost.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim on your Simmons mattress, you need to have a copy of your original receipt and the law label for your mattress. You should contact the dealer who sold you the mattress and they will guide you through the warranty process, but if you cannot reach them for whatever reason, you can reach out to Simmons customer service at 909-835-4216.

Stearns and Foster

Length of the warranty: Depends on the mattress

What the Stearns and Foster mattress warranty covers:

  • Body indentations or sagging greater than or equal to one and one-half inches (1 ½”) for latex and innerspring mattresses

What the Stearns and Foster mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Damage caused by an inappropriate bed frame or foundation
  • Comfort preferences
  • Physical abuse of the mattress, such as burns, tears, liquid damage, or stains
  • Any mattress sold “as is”
  • Floor models

What voids the Stearns and Foster mattress warranty?

There are several ways you can void your Stearns and Foster mattress warranty. First, the warranty is void if ownership of the mattress is ever transferred away from the original purchaser. Second, the warranty is void if the mattress is not used on the right kind of bed frame. Queen and king mattresses require a rigid bridge bar with a supporting leg and at least five total legs, or at least five equally spaced hardwood cross-slats, if using a slatted bed frame. Finally, if you file a claim and the inspector determines that there are signs of abuse, your warranty will be void.

The Fine Print

  • Stearns and Foster is part of the Sealy mattress company.
  • Your warranty may be prorated. Check your law label to determine whether you will have to pay a portion of the repair or replacement costs when filing a claim.
  • Stearns and Foster may only replace defective parts rather than providing you with a new mattress.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim on your Stearns and Foster mattress, all you have to do is visit the Stearns and Foster website, click on “Warranty Information,” and at the bottom of the page you can enter your Warranty Participant Code, available on your purchase paperwork. The website should walk you through the rest of the process.

Tempur-Pedic

Length of the warranty: 10-year limited warranty

What the Tempur-Pedic mattress warranty covers:

  • Indentations greater than three-fourths of an inch (¾”)
  • Splitting or cracking in the materials (not caused by improper handling)
  • Manufacturing defects in the zipper on the mattress cover

What the Tempur-Pedic mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Normal increased softness over time
  • Comfort preferences
  • Physical abuse of the mattress, such as burns, stains, cuts, or tears
  • Floor models or any mattress sold “as is”
  • Transportation costs

What voids the Tempur-Pedic mattress warranty?

The Tempur-Pedic mattress warranty is considered void for two main reasons. First, the warranty will be void if ownership of the mattress ever transfers away from the original purchaser. The second reason the warranty could be void is if the mattress is used on an inappropriate bed frame or foundation.

The Fine Print

  • A slightly different 10-year limited warranty applies to the Tempur-Pedic Cloud mattress.
  • Tempur-Pedic only replaces the part of the mattress that is defective, rather than replacing the whole mattress.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim, you will need a copy of your purchase receipt, information about your bed frame and/or foundation, and the registry number and manufacturing date, which can be found on the law label on your mattress. Once you have all of this information together, you can call 1-800-821-6621 to file your claim.

Zinus

Length of the warranty: 10-year limited warranty

What the Zinus mattress warranty covers:

  • Indentations greater than or equal to one and one-half inches (1 ½”)
  • Defects not caused by abuse or misuse

What the Zinus mattress warranty does not cover:

  • Normal increase in softness of material over time
  • Gradual slowing of the recovery time of the foam, as long as it doesn’t impact the overall pressure relief qualities of the mattress
  • Any mattress not purchased from an authorized Zinus retailer

What voids the Zinus mattress warranty?

The Zinus mattress warranty is void if the mattress is altered in any way, including removing the law label or the outer cover. The warranty can also be voided if the mattress is used improperly, such as using it on an improper base or bed frame or if there is evidence of abuse such as burns, tears, or stains. This warranty can also be void if a heating pad or electric blanket is used with the mattress. Finally, the warranty becomes void as soon as ownership transfers away from the original purchaser.

The Fine Print

  • If any part of a Zinus mattress is found to be defective, only that part will be replaced or repaired.
  • Zinus does not recommend using casters or risers on your foundation, and doing so may void the warranty.

Claim Procedure

To file a warranty claim with Zinus, you need to have proof-of-purchase, then you can start the claims process on their website, zinus.com. Click on “Support” in the upper right-hand corner, then click “Submit a Warranty Claim” and the website should direct you from there.

How to File a Mattress Warranty Claim

If something is wrong with your mattress and you believe the issue might be covered by your warranty, there are three steps you should take right away.

1. Start by taking high-quality photos of the problem

Make sure to get several different angles, and if it is an indentation or sagging issue, take a photo with a measurement tool to demonstrate the amount of sagging (see the “Mattress Warranty Tips” section below for how to accurately measure indentations).

2. Collect all of your paperwork and read it carefully

Find your original purchase receipt and the warranty and read through it to see if your issue is covered by the warranty. If the language seems unclear to you or you aren’t sure if your issue is covered, check to see if filing a claim comes with any inspection fees. If it doesn’t, then it won’t hurt to file a claim and see if the problem is covered, but if it comes with a fee, you may want to weigh the costs and benefits of filing a claim that may be denied.

3. Reach out to the merchant who sold you the mattress

If you bought the mattress directly from the manufacturer, this process will be very direct, but if you bought the mattress from a retailer, it could involve a couple of steps. Some retailers deal with warranties on their own, while other retailers will refer you to the manufacturer.

Try to be patient with the customer service representative helping you, but also make sure you stand your ground and advocate for yourself. Some companies may try to avoid fulfilling warranty claims by giving customers the run around until they give up, but if you stay polite and straightforward, and keep track of who you talk to on which dates, you can make the system work for you.

Mattress Warranty Tips

Dealing with warranty claims can be tricky, but there are a few tricks for making sure the process goes as smoothly as possible. Here are a few things you can do to protect your mattress warranty in case of a claim:

Keep your paperwork in order

As soon as you get the mattress, double check that the law label is securely attached, then collect all of your purchase paperwork and file it away somewhere safe and easy to find. If you have an issue later on, it will be much easier to file a claim if you have all of your paperwork in order.

Measure your mattress correctly for sagging

If you notice that your mattress is sagging or there’s a deep body indentation, make sure you measure it correctly to determine whether it qualifies with your warranty.

Start by removing all sheets and mattress protectors. Then get a string and two safety pins and pin the string to either edge of the mattress so that the string is taut. Then get a tape measure and a camera. Either set up the camera to take the picture on its own or ask a friend to take a picture while you measure.

Take the tape measure and measure the impression/sagging by gently placing the metal end to the mattress without pushing into the mattress. You should also be careful not to place the tape measure into the stitching, it must be placed on a flat expanse of fabric. This method should allow you to get a picture showing the distance between the taut string and the body impression or sagging.

Keep track of your claim process

If you file a claim, make sure you keep a running record of every step you have taken in the process. Keep track of dates, names, and save all forms of communication between you and the retailer or manufacturer. This will help you advocate for yourself in case the company is not holding up their end of the bargain.

Unfortunately, even if you do everything right, a lot of warranty claims get denied. That’s not to say you shouldn’t file a claim if there’s an issue, it just means that if you can, it’s better to focus on extending the life of your mattress and avoid having to file a claim at all.

Here are some of the easiest tips and tricks for making your mattress last as long as possible:

  • Try to keep kids and pets off of your bed. Both are prone to bathroom accidents which could stain your mattress and void the warranty. Plus, even though it’s really fun for kids to jump on the bed, it could wear out the coils or foam and make it far less supportive.
  • Make sure you use a solid, supportive base for your mattress. Nearly every warranty on this list says it is voided if the mattress is used on an insufficient bed frame or foundation, so if you want your warranty to be worth anything, be sure to read the paperwork carefully and buy a high-quality bed frame and foundation for your mattress.
  • Use a mattress protector to prevent stains. Warranties don’t cover stains, and some are even voided by them, so use a mattress protector to prevent any accidental spills from costing you your warranty protection.
  • Check your mattress information to see if it should be rotated or flipped regularly. Some mattresses are not meant to be flipped or rotated, but if your mattress can be flipped or rotated, it can seriously extend its life.
