DreamCloud vs. Bear Mattress Comparison for 2024

If your search for the perfect mattress has come down to Bear and DreamCloud, I see why you can’t decide between the two. Both brands offer impressive policies, features, and specifications. In this comparison, I’ll highlight two popular models from them: the Bear Star Hybrid and the DreamCloud Original.

I tested both mattresses and will share with you my findings for each mattress. Will Bear’s hybrid mattress outperform DreamCloud’s flagship hybrid?

DreamCloud vs. Bear: How Are They Similar?

  • Hybrid construction – Both the Bear Star Hybrid and DreamCloud Original are hybrid mattresses with multiple foam layers and a strong coil unit that acts as the support system.
  • Pressure relief – Despite being on the firmer side, both of these beds are good at relieving pressure thanks to their plush comfort layers.
  • Cooling – Hybrid mattresses are generally better at cooling than all-foam models, and both of these beds go the extra mile. They have multiple cooling materials and features that make them suitable for hot sleepers.

DreamCloud vs. Bear: How Are They Different?

  • Sleep trial – While Bear offers a 120-night trial period, DreamCloud offers an industry-leading 365-night trial.
  • Price  – Bear’s Star Hybrid mattress is around $500 more than the DreamCloud Original, regardless of the size you’re looking at. That said, there are other Bear mattresses, such as their Bear Original, that are cheaper than DreamCloud.
  • Firmness – The Bear Star Hybrid has a medium-firm feel, whereas the DreamCloud is considered firm.

DreamCloud vs. Bear: Firmness, Feel, and Construction

Firmness & Feel

We score all mattresses using a firmness scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmness. Between the DreamCloud and Bear Star Hybrid, the DreamCloud is rated slightly firmer.

MattressSleep Advisor Firmness RatingFeelTester Feedback
DreamCloud7.5/10FirmThe cover is breathable but necessarily cool to the touch. The top felt plush, but I could also feel the supportive core holding my body in alignment.
Bear Star Hybrid6.5/10Medium-FirmThere’s an inviting plushness coming from the upper foam layers. I would add that it also feels responsive, so it’s easy to move around.

Mattress Construction

The Bear Star Hybrid and the DreamCloud mattress are similar in that they’re both hybrids. The DreamCloud is slightly thinner, standing at 12 inches high, whereas the Star Hybrid is 13 inches tall. As hybrids, both beds have plush comfort layers with sturdy coils.

DreamCloud vs. Bear: Mattress Testing Performance

Pressure Relief

  • DreamCloud Mattress Pressure Relief Score: 4.5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Pressure Relief Score: 5/5

I tested pressure relief on these mattresses with a pressure map, which provided color-coded images to show where there was pressure buildup. Blue and green are good – that means little pressure. However, a lot of yellow and red means there’s more pressure.

Both beds performed well in my testing, with the Bear Star Hybrid slightly edging out the DreamCloud. The reason the DreamCloud didn’t get a 5 out of 5 is because I didn’t think it would fare as well for lighter or heavier sleepers in this category Also, considering the Bear Star Hybrid is a softer bed overall, I think more people would get more pressure relief from it.

Support

  • DreamCloud Mattress Support Score: 4.5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Support Score: 5/5

These beds rated similarly for support, with the Bear Star Hybrid rating slightly high than the DreamCloud.

When I tested the DreamCloud, I felt my hips sinking a bit when I was on my side, which is why I deducted a point here. Overall, I consider them both good at support, but I’d recommend the Bear Star Hybrid if you’re a side sleeper looking for better support.

Motion Isolation

  • DreamCloud Mattress Motion Isolation Score: 5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Motion Isolation Score: 5/5

If you sleep beside a restless bedmate, than this is a helpful feature to look for, which is often why we recommend it as a good quality for couples.

I tested motion isolation on the DreamCloud and Bear Star Hybrid using a seismograph app, which help picks up motion transfer when we moved around on a mattress. As you can see,  both beds knocked it out of the park here. Despite the coils in these mattresses, which can sometimes impair motion isolation, their multiple foam layers clearly do a fantastic job of keeping motion isolated to its origin point.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

  • DreamCloud Mattress Cooling Score: 4/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Cooling Score: 4.5/5

I tested these beds’ cooling capabilities with a temperature gun, measuring the initial temperature first. I then tested it after lying on the mattress for five minutes and then again after another five minutes.

The DreamCloud wasn’t cool to the touch, and it didn’t get a 5 here because it went up more than 10 degrees in my temperature gun test. In the case of the Bear Star Hybrid, it only went up an impressive 3 degrees, but it didn’t get a perfect scored because it’s cover, which is supposed to be cooling, didn’t feel cool to the touch.

Bounce

  • DreamCloud Mattress Bounce Score: 5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Bounce Score: 4/5

Bounce is often helpful for combo sleepers, those with limited mobility, and sexually active couples because it can make it easier to move around a mattress and keep you from feeling stuck.

My bounce tests for these beds included dropping a medicine ball on them to measure how much the ball bounced back, and I also moved around on the mattresses to evaluate how easy changing positions was.

When I tested the Bear and DreamCloud, they both performed well in this category, although the DreamCloud Original was slightly better. The Bear didn’t make me feel stuck, but my movement wasn’t as seamless as it was on the DreamCloud, which is why I deducted a point from the Star Hybrid.

Edge Support

  • DreamCloud Mattress Edge Support Score: 4.5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Edge Support Score: 3.5/5

Edge support is an important factor if you sit or sleep near the perimeter of the mattress. For couples, in particular, strong edge support gives them more space to spread out when they sleep. I tested this by sitting and lying on these mattresses’ edges for a minute each.

Comparing these two beds, it’s clear that the DreamCloud outperforms the Bear. On the DreamCloud, I fetl secure lying down but noticed a slight sink while seated, which is why I took off a half-point.

In the case of the Bear Star Hybrid, I noticed significant sinkage lying down but still felt secure lying in this area. I’d call the Bear’s edge support rather average. Not great, not terrible.

Couples

  • DreamCloud Mattress Couples Score: 4.5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Couples Score: 4.5/5

When we decide if a mattress is good for couples, we look at its performance in categories beneficial to couples like overall support, motion isolation, bounce, cooling, and edge support. We also look at the weight capacity and how versatile the firmness is for partners with different preferred sleeping positions.

Looking at the scores of the Bear Star Hybrid and DreamCloud Original, I think both of them are equally good for couples, and they rated the same here. The downside to the Bear Star Hybrid is its edge support, which is why I docked a half-point. With the DreamCloud, it’s not as great as cooling, but it does perform slightly better at bounce.

I would recommend that couples consider the categories most important to them when they deciding between these two beds.

Accessibility

  • DreamCloud Mattress Accessibility Score: 4.5/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Accessibility Score: 3/5

In this category, we look at what makes the mattress stand out, and looking at these two beds, it’s clear that the DreamCloud takes the lead. It comes with handles, which makes it much easier to move the mattress, given how heavy and bulky it is.

The Bear Star Hybrid mattress also has handles, but I gave it a 3 out of 5 because its warranty and trial are industry-standard. Compared to DreamCloud, it’s a bit lacking, given that DreamCloud comes with a full-year trial.

Customer Service

  • DreamCloud Mattress Customer Service Score: 4/5
  • Bear Star Hybrid Customer Service Score: 3.5/5

For the customer service category, I look at the website, how easy it is to reach out to the company, the trial, warranty, and other customer-oriented factors.

Although both of these brands have a lot to offer, they also lack some things. Again, I deducted several points for the Bear because it has standard policies and white glove delivery that comes at an additional cost. DreamCloud is slightly better at this because I took into account its long trial and easy-to-navigate website.

DreamCloud vs. Bear FAQs

Is the DreamCloud mattress soft or firm?

I’d describe the DreamCloud’s feel as firm based on my 7.5 out of 10 rating.

Who is the sister company of DreamCloud mattresses?

DreamCloud and Nectar mattresses are sister brands owned by the parent company, Resident.

How long do DreamCloud beds last?

A DreamCloud mattress should last anywhere from seven to 10 years, depending on how you use it. Rotating it several times a year can help prolong its lifespan, and so does making sure nobody jumps on it.

Is the DreamCloud good for heavy people?

Although the DreamCloud Original might work for some people over 230 pounds, I wouldn’t say it’s particularly good for heavy sleepers. I’d recommend a different mattress, possibly a firmer one tailored specially for this group.

Our Final Thoughts on DreamCloud vs. Bear

The DreamCloud Original and Bear Star Hybrid are both quality-made beds that have a lot to offer, so you’re safe choosing either one of them if you’re after a durable mattress. They both have a lot to offer sleepers; it’s just a matter of finding which one fits your specific needs better.

If you like a firmer mattress that performs better at bounce and edge support, I’d go with the DreamCloud. Conversely, if you need something more medium-firm that sleeps cooler, you’ll likely enjoy the Bear Star Hybrid more.

Looking at the companies as a whole, they’re both easy to get in touch with, have efficient websites, and offer a lifetime warranty. DreamCloud slightly has an edge over Bear with their 365-night trial, though.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

I tested the DreamCloud and Bear Star Hybrid using combination of objective data tests and subjective experiences. Some of the devices I used included a pressure map, seismogrpah app, and temperature gun. I also made sure to lie down on the mattress on my side, back, and stomach to see how it could perform for different types of sleepers. I then used these test results and Sleep Advisor’s scoring rubric to rate these mattresses in each performance category.
