Pros
The high-density foam layer at the base of the mattress minimizes bumps and shakes that often occur between sleepers.
The Douglas Alpine’s cover is a CoolSense® cover that wicks away moisture to keep you cool while sleeping.
Although this mattress is medium-firm, as opposed to soft, its four layers work together to create just the right amount of cushion and comfort to relieve pressure.
Cons
The Douglas Alpine may not support heavier folks like it does lightweight and average-weight sleepers.
Our reviewers found that the bed lacked the amount of edge support they desired.
Unfortunately, if you don’t live in Canada, you can’t purchase the Douglas Alpine.

Who We Recommend The Douglas Alpine For:

  • Hot sleepers – This bed has an ecoLight® cooling gel foam layer and a Polar® temperature balancing technology that wicks away moisture, keeping you cool and comfortable. We feel a bed with these features is appealing for hot sleepers or those in warmer climates.

  • Couples – The Douglas Alpine mattress is great for couples because it has a 6.5-inch thick support foam for good motion isolation, which means that motion shouldn’t transfer from one side of the bed to the other easily. Whether you and your partner have different sleep schedules, or if one of you is a restless sleeper, a mattress with motion isolation features could be the right choice for you. We also feel this mattress has a good bounce to it, which is enticing to sexually-active couples who don’t want to feel stuck.

  • Back sleepers – We recommend this bed to back sleepers because it has just the right amount of support for people who mainly sleep on their backs. This mattress is firm and sturdy, so the spine shouldn’t sink too deeply into the mattress. This support should help to prevent back pain or discomfort.

Who We Don’t Recommend The Douglas Alpine For:

  • People who prefer a traditional innerspring feel – If you prefer the feel of an innerspring mattress, this bed may not be for you. The Douglas Alpine is made of foam, which has a very different feel compared to an innerspring bed.

  • Stomach sleepersStomach sleepers often need a firmer mattress than the Douglas Alpine, as their weight tends to dip in their hips in softer beds, compromising back alignment.

  • Heavier folks – Since this bed is softer than some, it may not provide enough support for heavyweight sleepers. The softness may cause a heavier person to sink into the mattress too much, which can cause discomfort and pain.

Testing the Douglas Alpine Mattress: How it Performed

To test the Douglas Alpine Mattress, we laid on the mattress on our side, back, and stomach. We moved around to view the motion isolation and bounce, and we also sat and laid on the edge of the bed to assess the edge support.

First Impressions: Firmness & Feel

Firmness Scale: 6/10 (Medium Firm)

We gave the Douglas Alpine a 6 out of 10 firmness rating, which means we find it to be a medium-firm bed. The mattress is comfortable and seems to relieve pressure; there seems to be a balanced blend of both support and comfort. Although it is somewhat firm of a mattress, the Douglas Alpine’s cover feels soft. Our reviewers felt comfortable in many different sleeping positions as we moved around on the bed.

How Does It Feel?

When you first touch the Douglas Alpine mattress, you’ll feel the breathable, dry CoolSense® mattress cover that absorbs moisture and keeps the surface of the bed cool. This cover is soft and smooth to the touch.

After getting into the bed, we immediately noticed that it had a nice bounce to it, one that made it easy to move around. Once you settle into your Douglas Alpine bed, you should feel comfortable and cushioned, along with feeling support for your back from the layers of foam.

Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types

The Douglas Alpine mattress has a weight limit of 250 pounds per person, with a 500-pound total weight capacity for the bed.

Side Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – Side sleepers often need a softer mattress that provides plenty of contouring around their hips and shoulders, and the Douglas Alpine may not be soft enough for them.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – We recommend that average-weight side sleepers find a more contouring, softer bed. However, the Douglas Alpine may feel soft enough for some average-weight sleepers.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – In general, heavier folks could find the Douglas Alpine to be too soft because they sink in too much and lose support, though some heavyweight side sleepers may enjoy this softness.

Back Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – We recommend this mattress for back sleepers because it provides just the right mix of firmness, support, and comfort for those sleeping on their back. Lightweight back sleepers should be comfortable in this bed.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight sleepers should also enjoy this mattress because of the support foam at the base of the bed.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – While this mattress is best for back sleepers, many heavier folks still might find it too soft and not supportive enough, which could cause them discomfort or pain. It will depend on the sleeper’s personal preference.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Lightweight Sleepers – The Douglas Alpine is not our favorite mattress for stomach sleepers because it is a little too soft to provide enough support. However, some lightweight stomach sleepers may not find it uncomfortable.
  • Average Weight Sleepers – We don’t recommend this mattress to average-weight stomach sleepers because it likely will cause them pain and discomfort due to the lack of spinal support.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers could find this bed uncomfortable and would likely experience lower back pain because they would sink too far into the mattress, lacking support.

Pressure Relief & Pain

4/5

Back Pain – Douglas Alpine’s supportive cushioning could alleviate back pain by molding the body’s shape while maintaining appropriate support. The mattress has a combination of Elastex® and support foam that provides support throughout the bed while not being too firm.
However, we wouldn’t recommend this bed for stomach sleepers with back pain, who may find this bed too soft, which can cause the hips to sink too far and the lower back to curve.

For More Information: Best Mattresses for Back Pain

Hip Pain – Back sleepers with hip pain will likely enjoy this mattress due to its combination of cushioning and support. However, side sleepers with hip pain may find this mattress to be too firm, while stomach sleepers with hip pain could find it to be too soft. If the bed doesn’t have the proper support for the sleeper, this also won’t help with hip pain. Browse the best beds for hip pain here.

Shoulder Pain – The Douglas Alpine bed could help alleviate shoulder pain because the layers of foam cushion allow you to sink into the mattress just enough to relieve pressure, while still maintaining spinal support. We think this mattress is best suited for back sleepers with shoulder pain, as opposed to side or stomach sleepers, who may find the bed to be too soft or firm, respectively.

Explore the Best Mattresses for Shoulder Pain.

Support

4/5

The Douglas Alpine is created with a strong support foam base and additional foam layers. The all-foam design was created to maintain support for the body throughout the entire mattress.
However, the bed seems most supportive for back sleepers.

Although side sleepers may find this bed to have enough support, it’s not ideal if they don’t get enough cushioning for their shoulder and hip. We don’t think the Douglas Alpine would be supportive enough for stomach sleepers and heavier individuals.

Motion Isolation

4/5

Our team found this bed to have fantastic motion isolation, which means movement on one side of the bed is not likely to be felt on the other side. This lack of motion transfer is great for couples because one person shouldn’t feel their partner get out of bed or toss and turn.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

5/5

We also love the temperature regulation that comes along with the Douglas Alpine. This mattress is constructed with several materials that have cooling properties to help keep you cool and dry throughout the night. Cooling mattresses are especially great for people who sleep hot or live in warmer climates.

Douglas’ CoolSense® cover is made of sustainable Infinitex™ fibers that wick away moisture. Not only that, but the layer beneath the mattress cover is made of an ecoLight® cooling gel that promotes cooling. This layer uses Polar® temperature balancing technology which keeps you warm in the winter and cold in the summer.

Bounce

4/5

We think the Douglas Alpine has a good amount of bounce to it, earning this bed a 4 out of 5 score in this category. Buoyant mattresses can be helpful for specific types of sleepers, such as sexually-active couples, combination sleepers, and people with limited because. This is because bouncier mattresses are able to respond quicker to movement, which should make it easier to reposition.

More: Best Mattress for Sex

Edge Support

3/5

Unfortunately, our team found that the Douglas Alpine isn’t as high-performing when it comes to edge support. This feature is often most desired by people who like to spread out when they sleep or sit along the edge of the bed to get ready for the day.

Performance for Couples

4/5

We rate this mattress a 4 out of 5 in terms of performance for couples. For the most part, we recommend this mattress for couples. The motion isolation support is excellent and reduces motion transfer between sleepers. Additionally, there is a good level of bounce in the Douglas Alpine, which is great for sexually-active couples who don’t want to feel stuck and unable to move around.

However, we didn’t find the edge support on the mattress to be as good as it could be, which brought the score down. This medium-level edge support means that if couples like to spread out to opposite sides of the bed, they may not feel as supported as they do closer to the middle of the mattress.

Preference-based Features

Good for Mobility

If you have limited mobility, the Elastex® foam layer provides bounce and has a quick response time, which is helpful when moving around on the bed.

Eco-Conscious Materials

According to the Douglas website, “Douglas Alpine is built with sustainable Infinitex™ fibers and ecoLight® cooling gel foam, which requires up to 40% less carbon input to create (compared to high-density 4 lb memory foam)”. Also, Douglas only ships within Canada, which is where their products are made. This lack of international shipping doesn’t contribute to an increasing carbon footprint. So, if you’re looking for an environmentally friendly bed, this could be the perfect choice.

Adjustable Base Compatible

The Douglas Alpine bed is compatible with motorized and manual adjustable bases. Check out our guide of the best expert-tested adjustable bases to customize your sleep.

Construction: What’s Inside the Douglas Alpine?

The Douglas Alpine is a 11-inch tall mattress that is topped with a soft, moisture-wicking cover. The mattress consists of four layers, which give it the support and comfort that it offers to consumers.

  • Below the pillow top, Douglas utilizes a washable CoolSense® mattress cover that is removable and washable, making it easy to clean. The cover also contains Infitex™ fibers that absorb moisture so you stay dry and cool all night long.
  • Under the mattress cover, you’ll find a 2.25-inch ecoLight® cooling gel foam. Gel diffuses heat, creating a cooler sleeping environment. And the foam contributes to the soft, cushioned sensation you feel as you lie down on the bed. This layer of the Douglas Alpine is enhanced by the Polar® temperature balancing technology that keeps you warm in the winter and cold in the summer.
  • The next layer of foam is a 2.25-inch premium Elastex® foam that provides both bounce and cushion.
  • At the base of the mattress, there is a 6.5-inch foam layer created using motion isolation technology. This layer acts as support for the entire bed, reducing movement transfer between sleepers, and creating better edge support on the sides of the bed.

Unboxing & Off-Gassing

We found that unboxing the Douglas Alpine mattress was straightforward and easy to follow. The mattress is compressed and rolled into a box, and that is how it is shipped to your doorstep. Once you remove the bed from the packaging, the mattress will quickly expand. After you unbox it, we recommend that you wait 24 hours before you sleep on the mattress, so the product can fully decompress.

You shouldn’t experience a strong off-gassing smell after the bed is unboxed, which is the scent emitted by some materials such as harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Every Douglas product is CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they don’t contain these materials. You may, however, smell a slight new-mattress scent, but it should go away within 24 hours.

Certifications

  • CertiPUR-US® Certification – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping

  • Shipping – The Douglas Alpine is only sold in Canada. Shipping is free within Canada.
  • White-Glove Delivery – Douglas does not offer white-glove delivery of their products.
  • Trial – You can keep this product for 365 nights to make sure it’s your dream mattress, and if it isn’t, the company will refund your money. However, Douglas requires that their customers sleep on the mattress for 30 nights before initiating a return.

  • Return Policy – If you want to return a Douglas product, they will help you provide all of the information you need. You need the original plastic covering to prepare the mattress to be picked up. Douglas will pick the mattress up from the original shipping destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the original Douglas and the Alpine?

Compared to the Douglas Original, the Douglas Alpine has more cooling gel, which dissipates heat and keeps you cool. So, the Alpine may be better for you if you sleep hot or live in a warm climate.

Can I use my existing mattress base with a Douglas Alpine?

Yes, you can use your existing mattress base with the mattress as long as it is sturdy, supportive, and allows airflow.

Are Juno and Douglas the same company?

No, Juno and Douglas are different mattresses brands. However, both are Canadian brands sold by GoodMorning.com.

Is the Douglas Alpine mattress hot?

No, the Douglas Alpine mattress is not hot. It is meant to be cooling because of its gel layer, breathable fabric, and Polar® temperature balancing technology. In fact, we recommend this mattress to people who get hot in their sleep.

Are you supposed to flip your Douglas mattress?

No, you are not supposed to flip your Douglas mattress.

How often should I rotate my mattress?

You should rotate your Douglas mattress every four to six months, especially if one person who sleeps on the bed is significantly heavier or lighter than the other person. Just rotate the bed 180 degrees, so the head of the bed is now the foot of the bed. Rotating your mattress contributes to its longevity. However, do not flip your Douglas mattress.

How do I set up my mattress when it arrives?

To set up your mattress when it arrives, carry the box inside with the help of someone else. Cut the box open, lay it sideways, and take the bag out of the box. Next, place the bag on your base and cut the first layer of plastic off. Then you can unroll the mattress into its resting position. Cut the inner plastic off the mattress and slide it off. Just wait 24 hours for the mattress to decompress and then it’ll be ready for you to sleep on.

Our Verdict

Now that we’ve tested the Douglas Alpine mattress, we think it could be good for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. The mattress is supportive, bouncy, and soft, with excellent motion isolation.

This bed may also appeal to hot sleepers, those seeking pressure relief, and some couples. If you prefer a traditional innerspring mattress, primarily sleep on your side or stomach, or are heavier in weight, the Douglas Alpine may not be the mattress for you.

Overall, we rate this mattress a 4 out of 5, and we recommend you give this foam mattress a try as it is designed with quality, comfortable materials.
