Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

At Sleep Advisor, we test mattresses in person to help us determine how they perform and who will feel most comfortable sleeping on them.

We evaluate pressure relief, support, edge support, cooling, and motion isolation, along with how the bed feels in different sleeping positions. Each factor is tested differently, using several methods and tools that help us get the most accurate results.

Best Costco Mattresses

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge – Editor’s Pick

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress is what we’d consider a luxury-quality hybrid with coils and foam. This bed has features you’d expect from a luxury mattress but without the hefty price tag, which is why we chose it as our Editor’s Pick.

This bed comes with a Tencel™ cover. This material is always a nice addition for hot sleepers because it’s moisture-wicking. Additionally, The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a medium firmness to it, which I think should work for most people since medium-firm beds usually do best at balancing support and comfort for the widest range of sleepers.

What’s Inside the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge?

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress is 14.5 inches tall and features memory foam and coils for a balance of pressure relief and support.

    • Layer 1 – Top Panel With Tencel™. The construction starts with a stretch-knit cover featuring a sustainably sourced fiber called Tencel. It’s designed to wick away moisture and keep heat at bay, making it good for hot sleepers.

    • Layer 2 – Premier Gel Foam. Next comes a layer of luxurious foam that helps enhance pressure relief in sensitive areas like your shoulders, hips, and knees.

    • Layer 3 – Indulge Memory Foam. This layer of memory foam is exclusively engineered by Tempur-Pedic. It has a plush feel that enhances the bed’s cradling and pressure-relieving capabilities.

    • Layer 4 – Intellicoil® HD. This innerspring design features densely packed coils that move independently, helping the mattress adapt to your body shape and weight. It provides adaptive support and gives the bed a little bounce.

Pros
White glove delivery – This mattress comes with white glove delivery, which includes old mattress removal. This means that professionals will install your mattress for you. However, the delivery coverage is within 50 miles of a Costco warehouse, so make sure to check that you’re close enough.
Versatile firmness – A medium firmness is often a good choice for many people as it has a more universally accommodating feel. The Signature Lakeridge mattress is not too firm or soft, so you should be able to enjoy proper weight distribution, adaptive support, and pressure relief across its surface.
Cons
Only available in large sizes – The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge is only available in Queen, King, and California King. This means you’re out of luck if you’re after a smaller size such as Twin or Twin XL.
It’s heavy – One thing about this bed-in-a-box mattress is that it’s heavy, according to customers. It comes with white glove delivery, so you don’t have to think about setting it up, but its weight can be an issue if you ever decide to move or change bedrooms.

Customer Reviews of the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Mattress

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress has an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars on Costco’s website, with over 7,000 reviews. Overall, reviews of this mattress are positive, those some people have expressed that the bed felt much harder to them than they expected.

The Advisor Says: The Saatva Classic is the gold standard for lower-back support, strong edges, and customizable luxury. It’s not the softest or most motion-isolating bed out there, but it’s a dependable, bouncy hybrid that consistently impresses our testers with its two coil units.

Why the Saatva Classic Is a Good Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Alternative

Saatva offers many luxury models, and their Classic mattress is one of the best options if luxury is what you’re after. I think it’s a good alternative to the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge because it has coils, foam, and a cooling cover like the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge.

The Saatva Classic comes in three firmness options, but I think the Luxury Firm is going to be the most similar to the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress. You should get plenty of support from both beds since they have coils, but that said, the Saatva has two coil units for extra lumbar support.

What’s Inside the Saatva Classic?

The Saatva Classic is available at 11.5 and 14.5 inches. The construction starts with a pillow top that features a plush fabric with anti-microbial treatments.

    • Layer 1 – Pillow Top. Saatva’s pillow top features Lumbar Zone® Quilting in the center third of the bed. I think there’s a nice amount of cushioning from the pillow top, and the additional foam in the center of the bed prevents you from sinking too deeply.

    • Layer 2 – Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. This layer helps with spine alignment, offering extra lumbar support and durability in the middle of the mattress to prevent sagging.

    • Layer 3 – Lumbar Zone® Pocketed Coils. The first coil unit is meant to provide maximum support with 14.5-gauge coils. Zoning helps provide firmer support around the hips to prevent sagging and keep your spine aligned in different positions.

    • Layer 4 – The Base Coil Unit. These coils are made from 13-gauge steel, providing additional support and structure. This helps Saatva respond to movement and improve circulation as the coils adapt to your body regardless of your preferred sleeping position. This layer has high-density foam around the edges to improve edge support, which I found to be top-tier.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Leesa Legend – Best Costco Mattress for Back Pain

The Leesa Legend is a medium-firm mattress with two layers of coils for support and responsiveness, both of which are important to people with back pain. While the supportive coils help keep the body lifted and in a healthy alignment, the responsiveness they offer can help those with back pain move around on the mattress more easily.

As mentioned, the Leesa Legend has a medium-firm feel to it. This is great news for those with back pain as systematic research points to medium-firm mattresses1 as the best choice for comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment.

What’s Inside the Leesa Legend?

The Leesa Legend is 12 inches tall. The construction starts with a sustainable cover made from organic cotton, Merino wool, and fiber from recycled water bottles. It feels soft and gentle on the skin, but it’s also moisture-wicking and resistant to bacteria, mildew, and mold.

    • Layer 1 – Ventilated Foam. This layer is aerated with punch holes that make the foam more breathable. The foam hugs your body and cradles the pressure points, giving just enough bounce for easy repositioning.

    • Layer 2 – Memory Foam. This inch of memory foam is excellent for pressure relief. You can feel it very nicely as your body slowly sinks into it for optimal relief, especially around the lower back.

    • Layer 3 – Zoned Support Layer. Leesa has a unique zoned layer with micro-pocket coils and firm poly foam so that it distributes weight evenly while enhancing pressure relief and motion isolation.

    • Layer 4 – Poly Foam. This is Leesa’s transition layer, easing you into the coils underneath.

    • Layer 5 – Quick Response Layer. The second coil unit has over 1,000 pocketed springs that are individually wrapped for better motion isolation and targeted support. The perimeter has high-density coils for edge support.

    • Layer 6 – Poly Foam. Leesa Legend has an inch of poly foam as its base, giving the entire mattress extra structure and durability.

Pros
Luxurious materials – The Leesa Legend has organic cotton and Merino wool, both of which add a touch of luxury to this mattress. Not only that, but these materials help with temperature regulation, which is helpful if you run hot at night.
Pressure relief – The Leesa Legend includes memory foam in its construction. Memory foam is exceptional at relieving pressure, which should help you feel even more comfortable on this bed.
Cons
Might not be firm enough for stomach sleepers – As it’s a medium-firm mattress, it may not be firm enough for stomach sleepers with back pain. The reason for this is that stomach sleepers generally need firmer beds to keep their hips lifted and their lower back from curving.
Too soft for heavier sleepers – Similar to stomach sleeping, the Leesa Legend’s medium-firm feel might not be enough for some heavyweight sleepers over 230 pounds. If you’re a plus-size sleeper with back pain, a supportive mattress specifically designed for heavy sleepers might be better to help ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.

Customer Reviews of the Leesa Legend

Costco’s Leesa Legend rates at 4.4 out of 5 stars on the retailer’s website. Multiple customers have pointed out the bed’s quality design. However, several customers mentioned how heavy the mattress was,

The Advisor Says: The DreamCloud is a pleasantly supportive hybrid that really appealed to the stomach sleepers on our testing team (though it proved itself capable of aligning spines in every position). Its affordable price and couple-friendly features have made it a mainstay of the bed-in-a-box scene.

Why the DreamCloud Is a Good Leesa Legend Alternative

If you think the Leesa Legend is missing a little something, I recommend looking into the DreamCloud. Both mattresses have a medium-firm feel that most people should benefit from—but the DreamCloud should work especially well for stomach sleepers (like yours truy).

When I tested the DreamCloud mattress, I noticed it kept me aligned in all positions with no dipping whatsoever. There’s no sink to it, which is why I think it’s a good alternative, especially if you’re a stomach sleeper with back pain.

What’s Inside the DreamCloud?

The DreamCloud is 12 inches tall with seven layers, including its top cover.

    • Layer 1 – Cashmere Blend Cover. A soft cover stitched with decorative clouds.

    • Layer 2 – Contouring Quilted Foam. A gel-infused memory foam for initial contouring and comfort.

    • Layer 3 – Supportive Quilted Foam. A second layer of foam quilted into the cover with a firmer feel.

    • Layer 4 – Gel-Infused Memory Foam. Another sheet of memory foam that cradles your joints.

    • Layer 5 – Dynamic Transition Foam. A sheet of foam that separates the upper comfort layers from the spring unit.

    • Layer 6 – Coils. Individually wrapped coils that have been reinforced along the sides of the bed.

    • Layer 7 – Base Layer. A thick layer of durable foam.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud

The DreamCloud Original scores a solid 4.6 out of 5 stars among 8,000 reviews on its site. While some customers appreciate the value and affordability of the DreamCloud Original mattress, others find it to be on the heavier side, which could make moving or rotating the mattress more challenging.

Simply Modern – Best Affordable Costco Mattress

Simply Modern is a hybrid mattress with three layers of foam and a unit of innerspring coils. While the coils should deliver plenty of bounce and support, the plush memory foam can give plenty of cushioning to ease pressure in the hips, knees, and shoulders.

This bed has up to 975 coils in the support layer to ensure your body stays aligned in various sleeping positions. However, what stands out the most to us is that it’s not as expensive as other hybrids, so that’s a plus if you’re a budget shopper.

What’s Inside the Simply Modern?

The Simply Modern mattress is 12 inches tall, featuring four layers that combine foam and coils. The construction starts with a breathable soft stretch knit cover.

    • Layer 1 – Cooling Memory Foam. This layer of CertiPUR-US®-certified memory foam with advanced cooling helps dissipate heat and isolate motion. As is the case with memory foam, it should offer you a good level of body contouring and cushioning for pressure relief.

    • Layer 2 – Responsive Comfort Foam. This is another layer of certified foam designed for deep pressure relief without making you feel stuck.

    • Layer 3 – Premier Contouring Support. The support layer has 975 coils that are individually wrapped for better bounce, airflow, and motion isolation. The perimeter is reinforced in this layer.

    • Layer 4 – The Base Foam. The base is made from supportive foam to absorb noise from the coils and give this bed more structure and durability.

Pros
Affordable price – Hybrid mattresses are often more pricey because it’s an advanced mattress design. However, the Simply Modern mattress is reasonably priced, making it great for hybrid fans who are on a budget.
CertiPUR-US® certified foam – The foams in this mattress are certified by the CertiPUR-US® program, which is a third-party tester. This is an important certification for poly foam and memory foam materials as it signals you’re buying a safe, quality-made product.
Cons
Questionable edge support – Some customers have expressed that this mattress doesn’t have the best edge support, even with the reinforced perimeter. You might feel alright lying near the edge, but sitting here may not feel as secure.
Not for lightweight sleepers – The Simply Modern mattress is labeled as medium-firm, but some people might feel like it’s firmer than it actually is. If you’re lightweight and prefer sleeping on your side, you might be better off with a softer bed.

Customer Reviews of the Simply Modern

The Simply Modern has a 4.2-star rating on Costco’s website, with over 2,300 reviews. Multiple customers have said that it’s a good value and a lot of bang for your buck. However, some people have mentioned the edges are too soft.

The Advisor Says: The Midnight has one of the most impressive score spreads of all the mattresses we’ve reviewed. The best word to describe it is “balanced”: it’s got pressure relief, support, and cooling power in spades, plus a versatile medium-firm feel that tends to satisfy lots of sleepers.

Why the Helix Midnight Is a Good Simply Modern Alternative

If you’re on the hunt for a supportive mattress on a budget, the Helix Midnight is a strong substitute for the Simply Modern mattress. When I tested out this hybrid bed, I felt just the right amount of sink, and it kept my spine aligned in multiple positions.

Before sales, the Helix Midnight runs you about $1,300, but frequent discounts can knock that down to less than $1,000 for a queen. It’s a solid investment considering the quality and durability of the mattress.

What’s Inside the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall, so there’s only a half-inch difference compared to the Simply Modern mattress. What sets it apart is that it comes with a breathable knit cover, but there are another two options available for more cooling: a GlacioTex™ cooling cover and a GlacioTex™ pillow top.

    • Layer 1 – Memory Foam Plus. This foam is the brand’s unique design that offers a cushioning and contouring feel for optimal pressure relief.

    • Layer 2 – High-Grade Poly Foam. Next is another layer of foam designed to relieve pressure while also enhancing the bed’s support level.

    • Layer 3 – Helix Reposnive Foam. This is the bed’s transition layer that combines a cushioning feel with ergonomic support, making it great for back sleepers.

    • Layer 4 – The coils. Helix Midnight has around 1,000 steel coils that are individually wrapped for better motion isolation. There are also thicker-gauge coils lengthwise to enhance edge support, but my colleague Loren found the edges were sagging a little nonetheless.

    • Layer 5 – DuraDense Foam. This acts as the bed’s base layer, adding to the Midnight’s stability and durability.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great night’s sleep and some pain relief.

Read our Helix Midnight review to learn more about this bed.

Sealy Posturepedic 12” Hybrid – Best Costco Mattress for Couples

The Sealy Posturepedic is a 12-inch tall hybrid mattress that should fit many people thanks to its medium firmness, pressure-relieving materials, and support system. This is also why we feel it should work well for couples since it can accommodate more body types and sleep styles.

As mentioned, the Sealy Posturepedic has coils for strong support, but this also gives the bed some bounce sexually active couples usually appreciate because it makes it easier to reposition. On top of that, it has memory foam for pressure relief and motion isolation. The motion isolation is helpful because it means movements shouldn’t transfer across the mattress and as such, you shouldn’t feel so much of your partner’s tossing and turning.

What’s Inside the Sealy Posturepedic?

This Sealy Posturepedic mattress has a high-quality construction with multiple layers. It starts with a ComfortLoft™ cover featuring SealyChilly™ and Surface-Guard Technology™ for cooling and mattress protection.

    • Layer 1 – ComfortSense™ Memory Foam. This premium memory foam layer helps with weight distribution and pressure relief, providing a comforting and cradling feel, especially around the hips, shoulders, and knees.

    • Layer 2 – SealyCool™ Gel Memory Foam. Another layer of memory foam serves to comfort and support your body in various sleeping positions. The gel in this layer helps with cooling.

    • Layer 3 – Response Encased Coils. The Sealy Posturepedic’s support layer has individually wrapped coils that adapt to your body and respond to movement quickly. They’re encased to improve motion isolation, which is important for most couples.

    • Layer 4 – DuraFlex™ Coil Edge. Extra coils are added for additional edge support so couples can use the entire surface of the bed.

Pros
Hybrid construction – Don’t get me wrong, I love a good all-foam bed. However, there’s something about hybrid mattresses that makes them slightly more suitable for couples, particularly because they can give couples some bounce without sacrificing so much on motion isolation. Plus, they’re often better for edge support, which means more useable surface space for spreading out.
Cooling features – The Sealy Posturepedic has a cooling cover, gel memory foam, and coils for more breathability. All of this makes it worth considering if you or your partner sleep hot.
Cons
No King-size option – At this time, this Sealy mattress is only available in Twin, Queen, and California King, which means you’re out of luck if you want a King. However, they may be temporarily out of stock so I suggest checking with Costco to see if they’ll have a King size available soon.
Motion isolation may not be as good as all-foam beds – The company did a good job of ensuring as much motion isolation as possible; it has multiple foam layers on top of encased coils, all of which should help absorb movements. However, couples with particularly different habits might prefer an all-foam bed for even stronger motion isolation.

Customer Reviews of the Sealy Posturepedic

The Sealy Posturepedic 12″ is rated 4.4 out of 5 stars on the Costco website. One customer shared she didn’t even notice when her spouse rolled over and got out of bed. Another couple did mention how heavy the mattress is, though they still enjoyed it.

The Advisor Says: Our testers often compare the WinkBed to a luxury hotel mattress, which is no surprise given its handcrafted touches and elegant hybrid design. It’s also one of the most customizable beds out there, with a firmness level for every body type.

Why the WinkBed Is a Good Sealy Posturepedic Alternative

The WinkBed has a lot to offer and is one that my colleague Loren rated well for couples after testing it. On top of that, the WinkBed is available in multiple firmnesses, including Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.

We tested the Luxury Firm specifically, and as it is the more middle-ground option, that’s probably the best feel for couples. However, if both you and your partner are strict stomach sleepers, for example, you might enjoy the Firm model best.

The WinkBed feels cushy from the pillow top, so it’s great if you have some pressure buildup. Another reason why I’d call it a good alternative to the Sealy Posturepedic is because of its exceptional edge support. This means couples will have more useable surface space to spread out when they sleep.

What’s Inside the WinkBed?

As mentioned, Loren tested the Luxury Firm model, but there’s also the Soft and Firm. This hybrid is 13.5 inches tall, but it’s handcrafted, so the dimensions may vary a little between each mattress they make. The construction starts with a Tencel™ cover that’s moisture-wicking and cooling. It has 2 inches of gel-infused foam quilted to it to create the bed’s luxury pillow top.

    • Layer 1 – The Pillow Top. This 2-inch layer is made from gel-infused memory foam that creates a cushioning surface for optimal pressure relief. It’s temperature neutral as the gel helps draw your body heat away from the surface of the bed.

    • Layer 2 – The Innerspring Unit. The WinkBed has 8-inch individually wrapped coils zoned to provide more support in the lumbar area. The five zones are done so that you feel more pushback in areas more prone to pressure buildup.

    • Layer 3 – Extra-Edge™ Support. The coils in the perimeter do a good job of keeping you secure near the edge of the bed. It’s not the best edge support, but I’d say it’s pretty close.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Sleep Science Bamboo Cool – Best Cooling Costco Mattress

Cooling is a big factor for mattress shoppers who often struggle to sleep because they either run at night or their current bed space doesn’t provide enough cooling for them. If you often find yourself overheating, sweating, and looking for a cool spot in your bed, you probably know what I’m talking about.

When it comes to Costco mattresses, the Sleep Science Bamboo Cool is designed with cooling in mind, as the name suggests. This memory foam mattress has air channels, a cooling cover, bamboo, charcoal, and gel memory foam, all of which promote breathability and cooling.

What’s Inside the Sleep Science Bamboo Cool?

This 12-inch mattress has a cooling cover that’s removable and washable. This is always a plus for hot sleepers because it lets you clean the cover easily if you sometimes sweat too much.

    • Layer 1 – Bamboo Charcoal Memory Foam. This layer of memory foam is designed to relieve pressure while also helping with moisture and heat dissipation. The charcoal here neutralizes odor, so don’t worry about your bed smelling funky.

    • Layer 2 – Gel Infused Memory Foam. Memory foam tends to overheat, but not so much if you add gel beads into it. This layer is designed for comfort, allowing a gentle cradle with cooling so you don’t overheat.

    • Layer 3 – Patented Wedge Edge Support. The bed has reinforced edges, so it gives you more surface to use.

    • Layer 4 – Air Channel Base. The base is the tallest layer made entirely out of foam, but it has air channels for airflow.

Pros
Machine-washable cover – We don’t often come across mattresses with a washable cover, so it’s a nice addition. More so, if you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll appreciate being able to remove and wash it for a refresh.
Firm feel – This bed is labeled as Firm. This should be fantastic for stomach sleepers and anyone who needs more sturdy support from their bed. That said, lightweight side sleepers may want to steer clear of it since it’ll probably be too firm for them and could wind up creating more pressure buildup.
Cons
Limited bounce – This bed is only made from foam so don’t expect much bounce from it. Although this might not be a bad thing for everyone, it leaves a little to be desired if you want more buoyancy for repositioning.
No smaller sizes – This Costco bed is only available in large sizes including King, Queen, and California King. Therefore, if you need a smaller size, you may want to check out a different Costco bed or our Sleep Science Bamboo Cool alternative below.

Customer Reviews of the Sleep Science Bamboo Cool

The Sleep Science Bamboo Cool has a 4.4-star rating, with over 1,300 reviews on the Costco website. Multiple people have loved how firm this mattress is and have mentioned that it does a good job of keeping cool. However, there was some criticism about the bed’s off-gassing smell.

The Advisor Says: This is a memorably bouncy and supportive hybrid with state-of-the-art cooling elements. It had a delightful balance of cushion and lift for back and stomach sleeping in particular.

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Is a Good Sleep Science Bamboo Cool Alternative

As a hybrid bed, the Bear Elite is already positioned to be more cooling than the all-foam Sleep Science Bamboo Cool. But it has many additional tricks up its sleeve when it comes to temperature regulation.

The cover is a standout component, as it can incorporate two special technologies: PCM and Celliant®. (Note: Celliant® is only added to the cover if you pay an extra fee.)

The molecules inside the cover’s PCM, or Phase Change Material, shift from solid to liquid when exposed to heat, and have a subsequent cooling effect. Celliant® fibers, meanwhile, transition body heat into infrared energy that may encourage tissue recovery after the day’s activity, as well as up the quality of your sleep.

Under the cover is a layer of memory foam that’s been infused with copper. The copper resists bacteria while contributing even more cooling power to the bed.

What’s Inside the Bear Elite Hybrid?

The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches tall, featuring a hand-quilted cooling cover with PCM fabric and Celliant® fibers. The cover is gentle on the skin and makes the bed feel luxurious.

    • Layer 1 – Copper-Infused Memory Foam. The comfort layer is infused with copper for additional cooling and antimicrobial properties. Memory foam does a good job of contouring your body to relieve pressure.

    • Layer 2 – Dynamic Transition Foam. This is the Bear’s transition layer that contours and supports your curves, offering a smooth transition to the coils.

    • Layer 3 – The Coils. This layer has individually wrapped coils with higher-gauge coils in the center for zoned support. The edges in this layer are also reinforced with higher-gauge coils.

    • Layer 4 – The Base. High-density foam serves as the base here, supporting the upper layers and your body in different positions.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Beautyrest Silver – Best Luxury Costco Mattress

If you thought Costco doesn’t offer top-of-the-line mattresses, then it’s time to put those thoughts to bed. The Beautyrest Silver offers a premium design that should appeal to those looking for the best of the best.

The mattress has four foam layers and an innerspring base for some added bounce that makes it easier to get in and out of the bed. Additionally, it has a cooling cover and cooling foam to help hot sleepers stay cool and comfy all night long.

What’s Inside the Beautyrest Silver?

The Beautyrest Silver is a hybrid mattress with five layers measuring 12 inches tall.

    • Layer 1 – DualCool™ Cover. The Silver mattress has a cooling cover that should help with temperature regulation regardless of the season.

    • Layer 2 – AirCool® Foam. This layer is specifically designed to enhance airflow while still performing as standard memory foam to relieve pressure and create a cradling feel.

    • Layer 3 – Plush Comfort Foam. Another layer of memory foam serves to support your body so that you don’t sink too deeply into the mattress. This acts as the bed’s transition layer.

    • Layer 4 – Gel Memory Foam. This layer is designed to enhance lumbar support, which is especially helpful to those with back pain. It supports you where you need it the most, ensuring you don’t bottom out to the coils.

    • Layer 5 – 900 Series Beautyrest Pocketed Coil Technology. The coils in this layer move separately to ensure higher motion isolation and better weight distribution. They support your body in alignment and help with airflow.

Pros
Temperature-regulating features – If you tend to overheat when you sleep, the Beautyrest Silver mattress might help you feel more comfortable with its multiple cooling features. These include the cooling cover, cooling foam, and the coils.
Reasonable price point – Although I’d call the Silver mattress a luxurious one, its price point is still reasonable. In other words, it gives that luxury feel without breaking the bank.
Cons
It takes some getting used to – According to some customers, the Silver mattress takes a while to break in. This means the initial feel of the bed might change within the first few weeks.
Not for the lightest sleepers – This bed has a medium-firm feel, according to most of its customers, so I assume it might feel a little too firm for those under 130 pounds. This is especially the case for side sleepers.

Customer Reviews of the Beautyrest Silver Mattress

The Beautyrest Silver has been reviewed nearly 6,000 times and has a 4.2 out of 5 rating. One customer noted that this bed even has that hotel feel. However, a few people have mentioned depressions in the mattress areas where they slept showing up earlier than expected.

The Advisor Says: The Nolah Evolution is a team favorite with a highly competitive score spread—our testers gave it at least a 4 out of 5 in every single performance category. It’s definitely a luxury mattress, with the height (and price) to match.

Why the Nolah Evolution Is a Good Beautyrest Silver Alternative

At a full three inches taller than the Beautyrest, and with substantially more layers, the Nolah Evolution embodies luxury. It likely beats the Beautyrest in terms of cooling, too: it features a proprietary graphite-infused foam, a cooling cover, and a border gusset that lets air escape, all of which work together to keep sleepers from overheating.

You can also customize the firmness of your Evolution to suit your preferences and the nature of any aches and pains. Because it’s so stacked with specialized layers, our reviewers unanimously enjoyed it. One of our testers, Liz, has joint pain that can inhibit her comfort on certain beds. But the Evolution surpassed her expectations, and she called it “one of my favorite mattresses to try.”

What’s Inside the Nolah Evolution?

The Nolah Evolution has seven layers (including its upper cover) and stands 15 inches high. You can order it in one of three firmnesses: Plush, Luxury Firm, or Firm.

    • Layer 1 – Cover. The cover on the Evolution is made of organic cotton and ArcticTex™ fibers, the latter of which help to absorb and disperse heat.
    • Layer 2 – Euro Topper (2 inches). The quilted foam in this Euro Topper is labeled HTC for high thermal conductivity, implying that it also assists with redirecting unwanted warmth. The topper is encased in a gusset with vents along the sides that encourage heat to exit the bed.
    • Layer 3 – AirFoamICE™ (2 inches). This foam is infused with graphite to prevent overheating, and reportedly bests memory foam at pressure relief and durability.
    • Layer 4 – High-Resilience Foam (2 inches). A supportive, firmer foam bolsters the softer foam above.
    • Layer 5 – High-Density Transition Foam (1 inch). Another inch of transitional foam that buffers the comfort layers from the spring unit below.
    • Layer 6 – Zoned Coils (8 inches). The coils in the Evolution are split into three zones that give customized amounts of support to different areas of the body, including an especially supportive set of springs for the lumbar region of the back. Along the bed’s edges, the coils are reinforced for extra resistance to dipping and sagging.
    • Layer 7 – Base. Beneath the spring unit is a final and foundational layer of recycled plant fiber.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution

Earning 4.9 out of 5 stars from roughly 900 reviews on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

Sleep Science 14″ – Best Firm Costco Mattress

If you have ever searched for a firm Costco bed, you probably came across the Sleep Science 14” mattress. This all-foam bed was specially designed to provide a firm feel. Firmer mattresses are often more beneficial to stomach sleepers, heavyweight sleepers, and those who want to sleep on top of their bed more than in it.

This memory foam model features copper, a patented edge support system, and a 14-inch profile that should look good with any bed frame. The copper should help keep the mattress cool, but if you’re an extra-hot sleeper, you may prefer something that also has coils for added airflow.

What’s Inside the Sleep Science 14″?

The Sleep Science 14” mattress is a memory foam model with a firm feel designed to provide continuous support without sagging.

  • Layer 1 – Copper Memory Foam. This 1-inch layer is made from pure visco memory foam infused with copper to help with temperature regulation. Not only does copper make the foam cooler, but it also gives this bed some anti-bacterial properties.

  • Layer 2 – Memory Foam Comfort. The bed’s comfort layer is also made from visco memory foam. It’s slightly softer to help relieve pressure without letting you sink deeply into the mattress.

  • Layer 3 – Patented Wedge Edge. The side of the mattress has the company’s patented Wedge Support System for additional lifting along the perimeter. This allows sleepers to use the entire surface of the bed.

  • Layer 4 – Air Channel Base. The 11-inch base layer is designed to help with heat dissipation so that the mattress doesn’t overheat. It’s firm yet flexible, so you can use this Sleep Science bed on an adjustable frame.

Pros
Copper-infused memory foam – Copper is often used in memory foam mattresses to make them more cooling. Although it’s not as significant as, for example, a cool-to-the-touch cover, it does help with temperature regulation.
No sagging – This mattress should be firm enough to ensure you stay elevated on the surface without sinking more than necessary for pressure relief. This firm design can be especially helpful for stomach sleepers, who need to keep their hips level so the lower back doesn’t curve too much.
Cons
Limited size options – Like many other Costco beds, this Sleep Science mattress is only available in Queen, King, and California King sizes. If you’re after a smaller bed, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
No bounce – This bed has virtually no bounce due to its firm memory foam layers. Sexually active couples and people with mobility issues might want more responsiveness than the Sleep Science 14” can give.

Customer Reviews of the Sleep Science 14”

On Costco’s website, the Sleep Science 14″ mattress has 4.3 out of 5 stars for its overall rating. Customer reviews are mostly positive, with some people saying that even though it’s a firm bed, it’s still comfortable for them. However, some customers have said it’s not as firm as they were expecting.

The Advisor Says: We’re constantly calling this mattress one of the firmest in the online market, and if you don’t believe us, try it for yourself! It offers both a classic firm and extra-firm feel in its flippable design, alongside posture-aligning support. Bonus points for good marks in performance for cooling, bounce, and couples.

Why the Plank Firm Is a Good Sleep Science 14” Alternative

You can’t get much firmer than the Plank Firm mattress. As the name suggests, it is one of the firmest beds out there, so it can easily fit the bill if you’re after a mattress that won’t sag or let you sink even a little bit.

Why do I think this is a good alternative to Sleep Science 14”? Well, mostly because it’s firmer, but not only that. The Plank Firm mattress is also flippable, so you get the Firm side and then the Extra-Firm side. On top of that, it’s available in all the standard mattress sizes, which is not the case with the Sleep Science 14” model.

What’s Inside the Plank Firm?

The Plank Firm is a dual-sided mattress, so you can choose between a Firm and Extra-Firm feel. Both sides have a quilted top, but the difference is in the overall feel of the upper layers, depending on the side you choose. The standard cover is made from cotton, but the GlacioTex® upgrade is available for hot sleepers.

These are the layers with the Firm side up:

  • Layer 1 – TitanFlex™ Comfort Foam. This 2-inch layer comes under the .75-inch quilted cover and is made from high-density foam. It’s firm and supportive, so you’re unlikely to sink any deeper than the quilted top.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Foam. The second foam layer is 6 inches tall, offering both durability and stability. This is the bed’s main source of support, ensuring you stay on top of the mattress in all sleeping positions.
  • Layer 3 – Quilted Pillow Top. This .75-inch layer comes first when you flip the mattress.

Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm

On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Novaform 14” Serafina Pearl – Best Costco Mattress for Pressure Relief

You can get the Novaform Serafina Pearl mattress in a Plush, Medium, and Firm feel, depending on your preferred sleeping position and body weight. Regardless of the firmness level, the Novaform’s memory foam should do a good job of cradling the body and relieving pressure while also supporting a healthy spinal alignment.

Although it features memory foam, this bed is unlikely to overheat thanks to its Smart cooling cover and gel beads infused in the comfort layer.

What’s Inside the Novaform 14″ Serafina Pearl?

The Novaform mattress is 14 inches tall, featuring all-foam layers that give it a cradling feel with plenty of pressure relief. The Smart Cooling Cover is enhanced with 37.5® technology to regulate temperature in both summer and winter.

    • Layer 1 – Memory Foam Comfort Layer. The first layer under the quilted cover is made from memory foam with cooling gel pearls. This helps prevent the foam from overheating by pulling your body heat away from the surface of the bed.

    • Layer 2 – Support Layer. This layer is slightly firmer than the top one as it presents the bed’s main support system. The foam is designed to prevent sagging, ensuring you stay in proper alignment.

    • Layer 3 – The Base. This memory foam layer is designed to add stability and durability, making the entire mattress more secure and unlikely to sag.

Pros
Good motion isolation – All-foam mattresses often have good motion isolation, and the Novaform should be no exception. This means that movement from your partner isn’t likely to disturb you on your side of the bed, which can translate to more restful sleep.
Three firmness levels – This Novaform bed is available in Plus, Medium, and Firm. Having options is always nice as it makes it easier to pick a firmness that suits your needs the most.
Cons
Not the best edge support – Some customers have mentioned the Novaform mattress doesn’t have the best edge support, which is not unusual for memory foam beds. However, this is mostly an issue if you’re often sleeping or sitting near the edge. For example, couples who like to spread out might prefer better edge support, whereas it probably isn’t as crucial to solo sleepers.
Large sizes only – The Novaform Serafina Pearl is another Costco model that’s only available in larger sizes. As such, it’s probably not the best option if you’re looking for something more compact for a kid or teen.

Customer Reviews of the Novaform Mattress

The Novafoam Serafina Pearl has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on Costco’s website and over 7,000 reviews. Multiple people have mentioned how comfortable and cozy the Novafoam is, though several people said the Medium model was too soft for them.

The Advisor Says: For shoppers on a budget, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is one of the top hybrids we recommend. It’s simultaneously soft and bouncy, with three firmness options and decent cooling power.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned the Best Novaform Alternative

If you crave pressure relief but want a more responsive bed than the Novaform, I suggest you try the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. I’d say it’s a good alternative to the Novaform mattress if you’re interested in a bouncy hybrid that’s even better at cooling.

I tested the Medium version of this bed, and was surprised at how plush it felt—I gave it a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which is between soft and medium-firm. As soon as I laid on top of it I felt the pillowy surface cradle my joints.

What’s Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid?

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is 12.25 inches tall and has a breathable cotton cover quilted to foam. This creates a pillow top that allows a bit of sinkage for optimal pressure relief. The mattress is available in three firmness options: Soft, Medium, and Firm.

    • Layer 1 – The Quilted Top. This layer is 1.5 inches tall, offering a cradling feel that hugs the curves to relieve the pressure near the surface of the bed.

    • Layer 2 – Supreme Response Comfort Foam. This is the bed’s comfort layer, designed to adapt to your body in all sleeping positions.

    • Layer 3 – VariFlex™ Foam. This is Signature Hybrid’s transition layer, providing deep support and comfort without letting you sink all the way to the coils.

    • Layer 4 – Ascension® Coils. The coils in this hybrid are 8 inches tall and individually wrapped to move separately. This gives more pushback where it’s needed while also helping with motion isolation to an extent.

    • Layer 5 – The Base. The base of the Signature Hybrid is made from high-density foam to support all the layers above.

Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

What to Consider When Buying a Mattress from Costco

If you’re looking at Costco mattresses, you should get to know Costco’s various policies. Costco is a membership warehouse chain, so it operates a bit differently than your traditional mattress store.

Mattress Selection

Costco partners with various mattress manufacturers to offer a wide selection of beds, many of which are only available through Costco.

Costco’s own brand is called Kirkland Signature, so anything marketed under that name is a Costco exclusive. You’ll also see beds made by Beautyrest, Sealy, Leesa, and other familiar names in the mattress industry.

Some of these brands have designed beds that can only be bought from Costco, such as the Casper Select and the Tempur-Pedic Supreme.

Mattress Pricing and Membership Benefits

If you’re a Costco member, you’ll be able to shop in person at their warehouses. You’ll also have access to more options and better deals online.

If you don’t have a membership, you can still order a Costco mattress online, but you may have to pay more for it than you would as a member.

Shopping on a budget? Check out our best affordable beds.

Mattress Delivery

Costco offers free shipping and white glove delivery on the majority of its mattresses. That means a team of delivery specialists will unpack and assemble your new bed in the room of your choice.

Costco also includes “haul away” with its white glove service—the delivery team will remove your old mattress and box spring and haul them away, assuming they aren’t unsanitary.

In some states, however, the haul-away process may require an extra fee or separate scheduling. If you live in California, Rhode Island, or Connecticut, expect to pay around $10 as a mattress recycling fee. Costco applies this fee automatically if your shipping address is located in these states.

Mattress Returns

Costco is known for its generous return policy, which typically allows for free returns of undamaged products and a full refund. You can initiate a return of your mattress online, and Costco will schedule a pickup date and time window.

According to multiple Reddit reviews, this process is impressively seamless and a key part of Costco’s appeal for mattress shoppers. One user, who returned their mattress in April of 2024, was happy with the “[i]ncredibly easy return” and wrote that there was “no need to even interact with a human, other than the guys on the truck.”

What Type of Costco Mattress Should You Get?

The different mattress types each come with their own pluses and drawbacks. Get to know each one by expanding the sections below.

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses are among the oldest types of mattresses. They offer support, breathability, and bounce, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, traditional innerspring beds usually just have a thin comfort layer. For this reason, these beds might not be the best for contouring your curves to relieve pressure points. They also don’t have the best motion isolation because the coils are bouncy, and there are no comfort layers to dampen the movement.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are similar to innerspring beds, featuring coils as their main support system. However, the difference is that a hybrid bed has multiple foam comfort layers on top of the coils. These comfort layers can be memory foam, latex, or any other material added to help with pressure relief and motion isolation.

Like innerspring beds, hybrids can still offer substantial bounce, depending on the materials in the comfort layers and how firm they are. However, they’re usually better at keeping motion isolated to its origin point, which may be better for co-sleepers.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are among the most popular types. These beds are highly sought after because of their pressure-relieving and motion-isolating capabilities.

A memory foam mattress is unlikely to be bouncy due to the nature of the material, but this makes it a great option for couples after maximum motion isolation. They’re also great at support, combining softer and firmer layers to keep the body cradled and aligned.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are excellent for couples, hot sleepers, and eco-friendly shoppers. Latex offers plenty of responsiveness that can make it easier to adjust positions. On top of that, the material is naturally cooling, which makes these beds good for hot sleepers. For eco-conscious shoppers, many latex beds come with sustainable materials like natural or organic latex, wool, or cotton.

Couples that don’t want coils should go for a latex bed, as these are more quick to respond to movement than memory foam. Although latex mattresses are more expensive, they’re also more durable and long-lasting.

What Is a Costco Mattress Alternative?

A Costco mattress alternative is a bed that we think has a similar profile and feel to a given Costco bed, even though it’s sold elsewhere. Our experience as mattress testers enables us to make these comparisons and suggest beds that—in our opinion—can compete with Costco’s offerings.

How We Test the Best Costco Mattress Alternatives

Firmness

We give each mattress a firmness rating on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. At the end of the day, though, firmness is pretty subjective—the most desirable firmness for you depends on both your sleeping position and your body type.

Firmness and Sleeping Position

Your sleeping position is one of the most important things to consider when buying a new mattress.

Softer mattresses are often the best for side sleepers, while back sleepers usually benefit from medium firmness the most. Stomach sleepers typically need firmer beds to keep the hips elevated.

If you found a Costco model you like but feel it’s lacking a little something, it might be that it doesn’t fit your sleeping position well. Maybe it’s too soft, or too firm.

In this case, look for an alternative mattress that has similar features and performance, but that’s more comfortable for side, back, or stomach sleeping.

Firmness and Body Type

Lightweight sleepers don’t have the same firmness needs as heavyweight or average-weight sleepers. Each body type will need a distinct balance of support and pressure relief. Without the right firmness for your weight, you probably won’t feel too comfortable.

Cooling

Cooling is a big factor for many mattress shoppers. If you’ve ever moved your legs around looking for a cool spot on your bed, you know what I’m talking about.

We test mattresses for their cooling abilities by taking temperature readings in our studio.

We’ll get an initial temperature reading of a bed’s surface, then take two more readings: one after a tester lies on the mattress for 5 minutes, and one after they lie on the mattress for 10 minutes.

If the temperature increases by a lot, we know that the bed isn’t great at cooling. But if it only goes up by a few degrees—less than 10 is ideal—then it receives a high cooling score.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is mostly important to people who share a bed. If you co-sleep alongside a restless sleeper and don’t have a motion-isolating mattress, you’ll probably feel most of their tossing and turning, which can make it difficult for you to achieve a good night’s sleep.

We test motion isolation by moving around on top of the bed and using a seismograph app to gauge how well the mattress canceled out motion.

A seismograph with lots of steep peaks means that movement carries easily, and a flatter one means that the bed isolated motion instead of letting it cause big ripples.

We use a seismograph to test how well beds isolate motion. This is particularly important if you sleep with a partner or pets.

Generally, memory foam beds usually have better motion isolation than hybrids and innerspring models because the foam absorbs movement well. Motion isolation may also come at the price of bounce. A good Costco mattress alternative might have a little bit of both.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is crucial for many people because the last thing you want is to wake up with achy joints.

When buying a new mattress, it’s important to look for a bit of sinkage and contouring to ensure your pressure points are hugged. The most sensitive areas are typically your shoulders, hips, and knees, but some people experience pressure buildup in the lower back as well.

At our studio, we test pressure relief by having testers lie on top of an electronic mat. The mat produces a visual “map” of pressure buildup on the tester’s body. Blue and green areas indicate low pressure, whereas yellow, orange, and red areas indicate pressure hotspots.

Edge Support

Edge support is mainly important if you like sleeping or sitting at the edge of the bed. If not, it might not be your number one concern.

We test a mattress’s edge support by sitting and lying on the edge for more than a minute. If the edge dips dramatically and makes us feel like we’re falling, we’ll dock that bed’s edge support score.

Best Costco Mattresses FAQs

Do Costco mattresses go on sale?

You can find a Costco mattress on sale during major holidays like Labor Day. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are also good days to shop at Costco if you’re looking for a discount.

Can I return a mattress to Costco?

You can return a mattress to Costco as long as it’s in good condition, which means the store will accept your bed if it doesn’t have visible wear and tear, stains, dips, and such.

Does Costco deliver mattresses to your home?

Costco ships mattresses to your home but doesn’t always include white glove delivery with setup and old-mattress removal. This is something you should always double-check when buying a mattress because delivery varies for different brands.

Can I test a Costco mattress before buying it?

Not typically. Although you can look at some Costco mattresses in person at their warehouse stores, there are no dedicated showrooms where you can test them out.

Many people order their Costco mattresses online, try sleeping on them for several days or weeks, and return them if the purchase doesn’t suit their needs.
