Who I’d Recommend the Casper For

  • People who want versatility – This bed is built to work for multiple body types and sleep positions, so if you’re a combination sleeper or if you share a bed with a partner with different needs, the Casper should be a good fit.

  • Those who need more spinal support – This bed is zoned for support, so it’s firmer beneath the hips and softer beneath the shoulders. This can help keep your back in proper alignment and pain-free.

  • Hot sleepers – Unlike many all-foam beds, this one is aerated so it will be more breathable and sleep cool.

Who I’d Recommend the Tuft & Needle For

  • People who love a responsive bed – This mattress is made with Tuft & Needle’s proprietary adaptive foam, which feels like a combination of memory foam and latex. It should allow you to more easily change positions on top of this bed.

  • Shoppers on a tighter budget – The Tuft & Needle is slightly simpler but also less expensive than the Casper.

  • Eco-conscious shoppers – While this isn’t considered to be an organic mattress, Tuft & Needle is significantly more eco-conscious than Casper when it comes to the materials they use

Comparing Casper vs Tuft & Needle: Top Similarities

  • All-foam beds – Both the Casper and Tuft & Needle are made entirely out of foam. Even though they will feel different in their firmness and responsiveness, you can expect the gentle cradle and motion absorption from a foam mattress with both.
  • Beds-in-a-box – These mattresses will ship straight to your home, free of charge, in a box for easy and immediate setup.
  • Cooling – Both mattresses were designed with cooling in mind. The Casper is perforated for airflow, and the Tuft & Needle includes graphite and cooling gel to wick away heat.

Comparing Casper vs Tuft & Needle: Key Differences

  • Environmentally-conscious materials – In general, the Tuft & Needle is a more environmentally-friendly mattress, from the materials used to its construction. While Casper is well-made, it isn’t as eco-friendly.
  • The price – The original Casper costs over 1,200 dollars for a Queen-sized bed, whereas the Tuft & Needle should cost just under 1,000 dollars.
  • Better for different body types – We rated the Tuft & Needle better for sleepers who weigh less than average and those who weigh more than average. The Casper rates best for average-weight sleepers.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

We rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10 in which 1 is soft as a cloud and 10 is extremely firm. While both mattresses are in the middle, the Casper is slightly firmer than the Tuft & Needle, as it ranks at a 6 out of 10, and the Tuft & Needle is a 5 out of 10.

Remember, though, firmness is subjective, and a lighter person will feel a mattress as firmer than a person who weighs much more.

Support

Both of these beds offer great support but in different ways. The Casper has what is called “zoned support,” meaning the foam beneath the hips is firmer than the foam beneath the shoulders. This should keep the spine properly aligned through the night, no matter the position you’re in.

The Tuft & Needle doesn’t have zoned support, but it has a firmer base layer of high-density poly foam, so even heavier sleepers shouldn’t sink too far into the bed and bottom out.

Feel

The Casper bed will feel responsive and a bit firmer than the Tuft & Needle. As soon as you lie down, it will provide a gentle cradle, which means you’ll feel more ‘on top of’ the mattress rather than ‘in’ the layers.

The Tuft & Needle will also feel responsive but in a different way since it is made from their proprietary foam. This means you will sink into this mattress more, but when you move it will spring back into its shape.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

The interesting thing about the Tuft & Needle’s Adaptive Foam® is that it provides both a good amount of sinkage and bounce. This is because they’ve designed the foam to mimic memory foam for sinkage and latex for bounce. You’ll sink into this bed more, but you’ll also get more bounce from it as the foams are more responsive.

The Casper will feel more like a traditional memory foam mattress, though still slightly firmer. It will contour to the shape of your body, but you won’t sink into it as much since it is a firmer bed. At the same time, the foams won’t bounce back as quickly.

Comparing Motion Transfer

When we discuss motion transfer, we’re talking about how much you’ll be able to feel somebody moving on the other side of the bed. This is important for those who share a bed, and it’s especially important for sensitive sleepers.

Luckily, both of these mattresses have excellent motion isolation, so you shouldn’t be able to feel your partner moving through the night. This is true for most all-foam mattresses because these beds don’t include bouncy coils, and as a result, they’ll feel much more stable through the night.

Even though the Tuft & Needle has a bouncier feel, motion should stay isolated to one side of the bed.

Comparing Cooling

In general, all-foam mattresses tend to sleep hotter than innerspring, hybrid, or latex beds. Foam tends to trap heat, which can be a downside for hot sleepers who want a memory foam feel.

Both Casper and Tuft & Needle took this into consideration when designing these beds. The Casper’s top layer of foam is perforated with tiny holes to keep air flowing through the mattress, which will keep it cooler.

The Tuft & Needle is infused with graphite, which moves heat away from the body. It also includes a cooling gel to maintain a comfortable surface temperature.

Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)

Casper Construction

The Casper mattress is a bed-in-a-box foam mattress. Once it is unwrapped and fully decompressed, it will stand 11 inches tall, and the bed is wrapped in a polyester fabric. The mattress itself is made up of three layers.

  • Beneath the cover is a foam layer made from Casper’s proprietary foam, AirScape™. This perforated foam will keep the mattress from overheating at night.
  • The middle foam layer consists of two inches of Zoned Support™ foam. This foam is firmer beneath the hips, which helps support this generally heavier area of the body. It will also be softer beneath the shoulders and knees, which will help keep your spine in a neutral alignment through the night, no matter your sleep position.
  • The base layer is made of a dense foam that provides support and creates a foundation for the rest of the mattress. It should also make the bed more durable and long-lasting.

Tuft & Needle Construction

As a company, Tuft & Needle has long advocated against retailers using multiple, low-quality layers in order to charge shoppers more. They argue that these excessive layers do not provide added value for the consumer, and more glue and harmful materials are needed to hold them together.

This is why their mattress consists of only two layers of high-density polyurethane foam. At its full height, Tuft & Needle’s flagship mattress stands 10 inches tall.

  • The top layer is made of 3 inches of proprietary T&N Adaptive® Foam. This foam mimics a combination of memory foam and latex, in that it is both pressure-relieving and very responsive. It also includes graphite and cooling gel to keep you cool through the night.
  • The base layer consists of 7 inches of poly foam. This supportive layer serves as the foundation for the mattress and is much firmer than the top layer.

Comparing Company Policies & Price

  • Warranty – Both the Casper and the Tuft & Needle come with a 10-year warranty.
  • Shipping – Shipping is free within the continental United States for both of these beds. Additionally, Casper ships to Canada for free and offers optional in-home delivery for an extra charge.
  • Trial Period – Both of these beds come with a 100-night sleep trial, so you can thoroughly test whichever one you’re interested in and make sure it works for you.
  • Returns – Casper asks that you try out your bed for a minimum of 30 nights to see if it works. If it doesn’t after that, you can return it for a full refund before your 100-night sleep trial is done. To initiate a return with Tuft & Needle, you’ll need to fill out a form on the company’s website, and if it’s been used, they’ll coordinate with you to donate the mattress locally. Tuft & Needle does not require a 30-night minimum, but you need to initiate a return within the 100-night trial to receive a full refund.Price – The Casper is a slightly more expensive mattress, costing nearly 1,300 dollars for a Queen, and the Tuft & Needle costs just under 1,000 dollars for the same size.

Final Thoughts

If you’re choosing between the Casper and the Tuft & Needle for your next mattress, you are choosing between two excellent beds. The Casper will be a better fit for those who can afford to spend a little bit more on their mattress and want something slightly firmer and more supportive on the back.

The Tuft & Needle will be the better choice for those who want to shop a bit more eco-consciously and are interested in a unique mattress that feels both pressure-relieving and springy.

Whichever you choose, you’ll end up with a high-quality mattress from a reputable company.
