Whether you’re sharing a queen bed or want all that space to yourself, we’ll tell you what to look for in this particular size. The queen mattresses listed here have undergone multiple rounds of testing and proven themselves to be the best of the best.
Queen-size mattresses strike a beautiful balance between practicality and luxury. They give you way more personal space than a twin or a full, but they won’t take up as much of the bedroom as a king. They’re the most popular size for couples who share a bed — and they feel very royal indeed when you have one all to yourself.
Here at Sleep Advisor, we’ve reviewed oodles of queen-size beds in the search for top contenders. The queen mattresses on this list have met our high standards for comfort, support, and peaceful co-sleeping.

How We Chose the Best Queen-Size Beds
We put mattresses through a series of tests at our studio and grade them in key performance areas.
Because beds feel different to different body types, we have a lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight tester evaluate each one.
What We Want to See in a Queen Mattress
Quality Support
A supportive queen mattress will hold your spine in a healthy, neutral alignment, rather than letting parts of your body sink into the bed unevenly. All but one of the mattresses on this list received a perfect 5 out of 5 score for their support features. The lone outlier is the Bear Original, whose all-foam design resulted in a 4.5 out of 5.
Made for Co-Sleeping
Every queen bed on this list earned at least a 4 out of 5 in one or more testing categories that pertain to couples: motion isolation, edge support, cooling, or bounce. These aspects of a bed make it easier and more comfortable to share with a partner.
Not Too Expensive
All of the queen mattresses we’ve chosen cost less than $2,000 when listed at full price. More often than not, however, you can buy them at an appealing discount.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Hot Sleepers

Those with Back Pain
A medium-firm feel with lots of support means that this mattress may help with back pain.
Pros of the Helix Midnight
It has a lovely balance of pressure relief to support, earning a 5 out of 5 from our testers in both categories
Surprisingly, it isolates motion so well that we gave it a perfect score in this category, too
We found that it stays quite cool over time
Cons of the Helix Midnight
Stomach sleepers, especially heavyweight ones, probably need more support than this bed can offer
People who spread out when they sleep may not appreciate the Midnight’s poor edge support, which pales in comparison to the Saatva Classic‘s

The Advisor Says: The Midnight has one of the most impressive score spreads of all the mattresses we’ve reviewed. The best word to describe it is “balanced”: it’s got pressure relief, support, and cooling power in spades, plus a versatile medium-firm feel that tends to satisfy lots of sleepers.
The Helix Midnight at a Glance
The Midnight is a hybrid bed with three foam layers above its spring unit. It was designed for side sleepers, but we’ve found that it works well for back sleepers, too.

What’s Inside the Helix Midnight?
The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall with six total layers. The foams in this bed are also CertiPUR-US® certified, ensuring they meet strict health and safety standards.
Layer 1 – Cover. The standard cover is soft to the touch, but you can upgrade to a cooling cover with GlacioTex™ fibers for an added fee.
Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. This foam layer gives the bed its pressure-relieving surface.
Layer 3 – Helix Responsive Foam. A medium feel, bouncy foam both contours to your curves and reacts quickly when you shift around.
Layer 4 – Helix Responsive Foam. A second layer of this responsive foam serves as a buffer between you and the coil layer below.
Layer 5 – Coil Unit. Wrapped coils react individually to movement. They’re reinforced on the long sides of the bed for edge support.
Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. At the bottom of the mattress, a dense foam rounds out the support features.
Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Queen Mattress Overall
The Helix Midnight has some of the most superb testing results we’ve seen from a mattress: perfect 5 out of 5 scores across support, pressure relief, and motion isolation.
I felt a great balance of cushioning and lift on this bed. Its medium-firm feel should work well for side sleepers, back sleepers, and couples alike, because it can satisfy a broad range of preferences.
The only folks I’d steer away are stomach sleepers like myself, who will need even more lift around the hips.
What really stands out to me about this bed, though, is its motion isolation. Usually, hybrids struggle to cancel out motion because of their bouncy coils, but the Midnight manages to stay still and quiet.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.
Multiple firmness options (Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus). We tested the Luxury Firm and placed it at a 6 out of 10 on our scale, which is comfortably medium-firm.
Size
Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
Combination Sleepers
Its springiness makes it easy to change your sleeping position, and it adapts well to each one.
Hot Sleepers
Gel-infused foams, airflow around the coils, and a breathable cover earned the WinkBed a high cooling score.
Spine Alignment
Its zoned coils and “LumbarLayer™” of foam help to keep the lower back supported and aligned with the rest of the spine.
WinkBed Pros
There are four firmness options available for this bed, including one designed specifically for plus-size sleepers
It’s so springy that it feels like it’s helping you to move around on top of it
The zoned support was really noticeable during testing, and helped to keep our lumbar regions lifted
WinkBed Cons
Its motion isolation isn’t the greatest, so if you’re a restless sleeper who shares a bed, look elsewhere
It has a classic hybrid feel that keeps you on top of the mattress, rather than sinking in; if you want more of a hug from your bed, browse the best soft mattresses

The WinkBed is available in four firmnesses: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. It’s about 13.5 inches tall.
Tencel™ Cover. Made of fibers derived from eucalyptus wood pulp, the surface of the mattress is soft, moisture-wicking, and eco-friendly.
Euro Pillow Top. Foam quilted into the cover provides initial cushioning, and the inclusion of gel should help keep you cool.
Transitional Foam Layers. A series of specialized foams complete the bed’s comfort layers and lead into the springs below.
Innerspring Unit. The coil layer features zoned support, with five zones providing different levels of pushback to ensure good body alignment.
Why the WinkBed Earned Best Queen Mattress for Back Pain
For sleepers with sore backs, the WinkBed might be a lovely sanctuary. It incorporates multiple lumbar-focused features, including a LumbarLayer™ of supportive foam and zoned coils that give the lower-back region extra lift.
I could certainly feel this lift during testing—the other testers and I agreed that the zoned support was awesome, especially when resting on our backs.
In fact, it was enough lift for me to feel comfortable on my stomach, too (though our heavyweight tester wanted a smidge more support in this position).
The WinkBed is available in multiple firmness levels (Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus), offering folks with back pain a helpful degree of customization.
Customer Reviews of the Winkbed
On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

The Advisor Says: The DreamCloud is a pleasantly supportive hybrid that really appealed to the stomach sleepers on our testing team (though it proved itself capable of aligning spines in every position). Its affordable price and couple-friendly features have made it a mainstay of the bed-in-a-box scene.
The DreamCloud at a Glance

What’s Inside the DreamCloud?
The DreamCloud has seven layers in its 12-inch construction. The foams it uses are all CertiPUR-US® certified.
Layer 1 – Top Cover. The cashmere-blend material on top provides resilience, absorbency, and softness.
Layer 2 – Contouring Quilted Foam. A soft poly foam is quilted into the cover for added plushness at the top.
Layer 3 – Supportive Quilted Foam. A slightly firmer foam than the one above.
Layer 4 – Gel Memory Foam. This foam should feel cooler than typical memory foam, delivering a cozy cradle and soothing your pressure points.
Layer 5 – Transition Layer. A dynamic foam layer encourages proper alignment while making sure the coils don’t poke through the comfort layers.
Layer 6 – Coil Unit. Individually wrapped coils make up the supportive innerspring unit, with thicker coils along the edges.
Layer 7 – Base Layer. Standard foam acts as a foundation for the mattress.
Why the DreamCloud Earned Best Queen Mattress for Back Sleepers
The DreamCloud is a match made in heaven for back sleepers, who need a medium-firm bed with very steady support. I love that it buoyed me in every sleep position I tried—yes, even on my stomach—but because of its particular balance of cushion-to-lift, I have to say that back-sleeping is where it truly shines.
Like the Midnight, the DreamCloud is also surprisingly accomplished at motion isolation. We gave it a 4.25 out of 5 in this category, which is way above average for a hybrid bed.
If you’re shopping for a queen, the only reservation I have about this choice is its lackluster edge support.
Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Mattress
The DreamCloud Original scores a solid 4.7 out of 5 stars among customers on its site. One potential downside of the DreamCloud Original mattress is its weight, making it challenging to move or rotate, but it offers excellent support and comfort for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

Firm Mattress Fans
At 7.5 out of 10, this bed is on the firmer side, even though it has memory foam on top.
Pros of the Nectar Mattress
This bed offers pressure relief alongside its support
We were impressed by how well the perimeter of the Nectar held up, making it good for spreading out or sitting on the edges
Memory foam tends to trap heat, but the bed’s cooling cover counteracts this
Cons of the Nectar Mattress
The foams on the Nectar aren’t very bouncy, so consider looking at the best hybrid mattresses if responsiveness is important to you
It’s on the firmer side, so if you need a softer bed, you might want to consider Nectar’s most luxurious model, the Nectar Luxe

The Nectar at a Glance

The Nectar is 12 inches high and has five total layers if you count its top and bottom covers.
Layer 1 – Top Cover. Made with polyethylene fibers that can help with cooling, the top cover protects the inner foam layers.
Layer 2 – Memory Foam (1 inches). This layer of foam molds to the curvature of your body.
Layer 3 – Dynamic Response Foam (3 inches). A transitional layer that adds a degree of bounce and support to the bed.
Layer 4 – ActiveSupport Base Foam (8 inches). This thick and sturdy layer serves as the bed’s foundation.
Layer 5 – Lower Cover. A polyester cover that keeps all the layers aligned and contained.
Why the Nectar Earned Best Queen Memory Foam Mattress
The Nectar’s classic model brings support above all, making it best suited to those who want a firmer-feeling foam mattress. We rated it at a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, to be exact.
So, who will love the Nectar? Back sleepers, for one. The high-density base layer is strong and durable, lending itself nicely to spinal alignment. But there’s still some pressure relief from the memory foam at the surface to balance it out.
If you’re a side sleeper or looking to “sink into” your mattress, though, the Nectar isn’t the foam bed for you.
Couples should dig its stellar motion isolation, edge support, and accompanying policies, which include a year-long sleep trial and lifetime warranty.
Customer Reviews of the Nectar
With staggering 52,000 reviews on Nectar’s website, the Nectar mattress has an average of 4.7 out of 5 stars. One common customer complaint about the Nectar mattress is its longer-than-average break-in period, while many customers praise its excellent value and comfort once fully settled.

The Advisor Says: The Saatva Classic is the gold standard for lower-back support, strong edges, and customizable luxury. It’s not the softest or most motion-isolating bed out there, but it’s a dependable, bouncy hybrid that consistently impresses our testers with its two coil units.
The Saatva Classic at a Glance
Advertised as a “luxury innerspring” bed, the Saatva Classic outdoes its competition by including not one, but two coil units in its construction. It’s a bouncy, durable mattress that prioritizes support all the way to its edges.

What’s Inside the Saatva Classic?
The Saatva Classic is available in three firmnesses (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two heights (11.5 and 14.5 inches).
Euro Pillow Top. The first layer of the Saatva Classic is made up of plush foam beneath an organic cotton cover, quilted to give support in the center and treated to prevent unwanted microbial growth.
Memory Foam Lumbar Crown. A crest of CertiPUR-US® foam balances support and pressure relief in the lower back area.
First Innerspring Unit. Pocketed coils are arranged to bolster the lower back while providing more give in the surrounding areas.
Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. In between the two coil units is a bracing wire to promote proper spinal alignment.
Second Innerspring Unit. Interconnected coils act as a more traditional innerspring unit and add to the mattress’s durability.
High-Density Foam Rails. Around the perimeter, a series of foam rails ensure there’s no sagging around the edges.
Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Luxury Queen Mattress
A great queen mattress should be tailored to suit your preferences, and the Classic is plenty customizable. You can order it in one of three different firmnesses (Plush, Luxury Firm, or Firm) and two heights (11.5 or 14.5 inches)—all of which should deliver a luxurious sleep experience.
We tested the Luxury Firm model, which felt delightfully springy and lifted my midsection in every position I tried.
Because it has two coil units, we predicted this bed would be very supportive. But we were still blown away by just how secure and aligned we felt, both in the middle of the mattress and on the edges.
The dense foam rails that line the perimeter earned it a 5 out of 5 for its edge support, as we were able to spread out to our hearts’ content.
My only nitpick is that motion travels easily across its surface—not the best trait if you share a bed with a light sleeper.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic
The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.

Layer 4 – Firm AirFoam™ (1 inch). This firmer foam layer aids in supporting the above comfort layers.
Layer 5 – High-Density Foam Foundation (7 inches). A dense foam base stabilizes the mattress.
Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Queen Mattress for Side Sleepers
The Nolah Signature is rated a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, so it’s on the softer end of medium-firm.
Nolah maximized its cushioning by adding 75 percent more AirFoam™ to this bed than you can find in its Original model, and the difference is palpable: we all felt fully hugged while testing it.
Side sleepers need a lot of pressure relief for their hips and shoulders, so it’s a good thing the Signature earned 5 out of 5 in that category.
At the same time, it didn’t slouch in the support department. Loren and I were well-aligned on top of it—only Spencer, our heavyweight tester, felt that he might need more support.
Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature Mattress
The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the Bear Original Earned Best Memory Foam Queen Mattress
The Bear Original is a budget-friendly all-foam mattress that’s sure to please shoppers looking for a queen-size mattress that won’t break the bank.
At a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, I thought this bed was pleasantly (and surprisingly) firm. It kept my spine aligned in all three sleeping positions, and we gave it a near-perfect 4.5 out of 5 for both support and pressure relief.
It also has more bounce than you might predict. Combination sleepers should be able to shift around at night without issue.
All that said, side sleepers and heavy folks might not be very cozy on this queen. The first group will want more softness, and the second needs more support.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Original
According to over 10,000 reviews on Bear’s website, the Bear Original scores about 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Bear Original mattress for its excellent pressure relief but have reported that its edge support may be lacking, which could affect those who like to spread out.

Layer 4 – Ascension® Coil Unit (8 inches). Individually wrapped coils make up the innerspring unit of this mattress for bounce and support.
Layer 5 – Flex Base (0.25 inches). Everything sits on a foundational layer of foam.
Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Queen Hybrid Mattress
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes in three firmness options for your choosing. We tested the Medium option and found it to be super pressure-relieving and supported, as to be expected with the combination of foams and coils.
In terms of performance, it’s also breathable enough to earn a near-perfect cooling score, which should benefit hot sleepers looking for a queen-size hybrid. It’s unfortunately not the best option for couples, as it’s lacking in motion absorption and edge support.
However, if you’re looking for a relatively straightforward hybrid that gets the job done, the Signature Hybrid should check most of your boxes—and without breaking the bank.
Customer Reviews of the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Brooklyn Signature has over 10,000 reviews and a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress receives praise from customers for its versatility with different firmness options, but some have mentioned that it may produce slight noise when bearing weight.

Pros of the Titan Plus
The Titan Plus has a weight capacity that goes up to 1,000 pounds, and it has the construction to comfortably support that weight

What’s Inside the Titan Plus?
The Titan Plus is 11 inches tall and has four layers (though this number increases to five if you pay extra for a GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover).
Layer 1 – Gel Memory Foam (1 inch). This initial comfort layer gives you just enough sink to feel cozy.
Layer 2 – TitanFlex™ Foam (2 inches). An elastic foam layer that bounces back into shape easily but also relieves pressure.
Layer 3 – Coils (8 inches). The coils in this bed are pocketed so they compress individually, and reinforced along the perimeter.
Layer 4 – High-Density Foam Base (0.25 inches). An especially thick and durable foundation.
Why the Titan Plus Earned Best Queen Mattress for Heavy People
Folks over 230 pounds can often struggle to find a mattress that will keep them comfortably supported. Thankfully, Brooklyn Bedding created the Titan Plus to cater to this group—and we think they hit the nail on the head.
The Titan Plus has a firmer feel (7 out of 10 on our scale) that works to support all sleeping positions, and plenty of cushioning to back it up. Our heavyweight tester Spencer really enjoyed this mattress on his back and side especially.
Its edge support and 1,000-pound weight capacity make it a popular bed for couples, as well. Just note that if you share the bed, sleepers of a lighter weight may find this bed a bit too firm.
Customer Reviews of the Titan Plus
Users on Titan by Brooklyn Bedding’s site have given the Titan Plus a 4.7 out of 5 stars. There are over 2,500 reviews where most customers find the Titan Plus mattress to offer exceptional durability and support, but some mention that it might be too firm for those who prefer a softer feel.
We rate each mattress on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect its overall quality. This number is comprised of individual scores from hands-on testing of materials, firmness, pressure relief, motion transfer, cooling, responsiveness, and more.
Flippable with two possible firmnesses, both on the firmer side. The firm side ranked a 7 out of 10, and the extra-firm side ranked 8.5 out of 10.

The Advisor Says: We’re constantly calling this mattress one of the firmest in the online market, and if you don’t believe us, try it for yourself! It offers both a classic firm and extra-firm feel in its flippable design, alongside posture-aligning support. Bonus points for good marks in performance for cooling, bounce, and couples.
The Plank Firm at a Glance
A flippable mattress with two usable sides, the Plank Firm takes its name very seriously. One side is quite firm by normal mattress standards; the other is extremely firm, and only for people who prefer a rigid surface.

What’s Inside the Plank Firm?
The Plank Firm is 10.25 inches high and has four total layers with an all-foam interior.
Layer 1 – Quilted Top, Extra-Firm Side (0.75 inches). The firmer side of the plank has absolutely no loft to it.
Layer 2 – High-Density Support Foam (6 inches). The thick foam core of the bed.
Layer 3 – TitanFlex™ Comfort Foam (2 inches). A bouncy foam that gives the less-firm side a tiny but of cushion.
Layer 4 – Quilted Top, Firm Side (1.5 inches). The top of the “traditionally” firm side has a little loft.
Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Firm Queen Mattress
The Plank Firm really stands alone in its dedication to peak firmness. We tested both sides of this flippable bed—its firm side and its “ultra-firm” side—and found the firmer side to be an almost one-to-one match for a wood floor.
We were more fond of the less firm side, which kept our spines aligned and felt delightfully responsive. It was a great experience on our backs and stomachs, in particular.
The Plank also has impressive edge support for a foam bed. Because it’s so firm, its sides stand up well to pressure. If you (and your partner) like a firm surface, this is a queen bed to consider.
Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm
On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers left a little over 3,000 reviews, appreciating the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

What to Consider Before Buying a Queen Mattress
Room Size
If your bedroom is around 10 feet wide and 12 to 14 feet long, that’s the perfect size for a queen bed. At the very least, we recommend a 10’x10’ room.
You might be able to get away with placing a queen-size mattress in a smaller room, but you’ll probably feel scrunched.
Remember that a queen mattress is about 6.6 feet long and 5 feet wide. You’ll want some space around the bed, too, for other furniture and ease of movement.
Types of Queen Mattresses
Most shoppers are probably looking for a standard queen-size bed, but it’s worth knowing about all of your options. Just like king-size beds come in a few different varieties, there are alternate queen sizes to explore.
Standard Queen Size
A standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. It’s notably larger than a full-size mattress and narrower (but not shorter) than a king.
Queen beds are big enough for many couples to sleep side-by-side comfortably, and they’re considered one of the most commonly found mattress sizes in American bedrooms.
Olympic Queen
An Olympic queen bed is six inches wider than a standard queen, measuring 66 x 80 inches.
If you don’t want to spend too much on a king-size bed but still need a bit more room than a typical queen offers, this size may be for you. It’s great for couples who often find themselves sharing the bed with a small child or pet.
California Queen
A California queen bed is four inches longer than a standard queen, measuring 60 x 84 inches. It’s especially comfortable for very tall people, or for those who want to share the foot of their bed with a snoozing pet.
Short Queen
A short queen mattress is exactly what it sounds like: a queen bed that’s the same width as a standard queen, but shorter. Its dimensions are 60 x 74 inches, and it can give you more space between the wall and the foot of the bed for furniture and clearance.
Short queens are also popular in the RV mattress world, where buyers might need a queen bed that takes up slightly less room.
Split Queen Mattress
A split queen mattress is actually two mattresses placed side-by-side to create the dimensions of a queen bed. Each smaller mattress measures 30 x 80 inches.
The advantage of a split queen bed is that you can customize each side, helping couples with different preferences to feel maximally cozy. If you order a split adjustable bed frame, you can also elevate the head and feet of the bed on your side of the split queen independently from your partner’s.
Sharing the Bed
Many people upgrade to a queen bed to share it with a partner. But a queen-size mattress should offer couples more than just an increase in space—it should also encourage easy, peaceful co-sleeping with features designed for just that.
The relative importance of these features will depend on what matters most to the two of you. For example, some light sleepers might prioritize motion isolation to keep themselves from waking during the night due to movement, whereas others might want a very bouncy bed that enhances their sex life.
Consider the following couple-friendly elements as you shop, and decide which are make-or-break factors for you and your significant other. (You may want to browse the best mattresses for couples, while you’re at it.)
Edge Support
If you’re going to share a queen bed — or if you’re someone who’s prone to sleeping on the edge of your mattress — you’ll probably benefit from a reinforced perimeter.
Mattresses can derive edge support from thicker coils or higher-density foam along their borders. Sometimes only the long edges of a bed are reinforced, whereas other models offer edge support on all four sides.
With decent edge support, you won’t feel like the sides of your queen mattress dip or sag when you sit or lie on them. You’ll therefore be able to use more of the mattress’ total surface area.
To test edge support, we lie on the edge of the bed for a minute and sit on the edge of the bed for a minute (while tying our shoes). We make note of any slipping sensation we feel, as well as of how much the edges dip under our weight.
Which queen-size mattress has the best edge support?
The Saatva Classic and the Plank Firm both received perfect scores for their edge support during testing. These queen beds will not let you down — literally.
Motion Isolation
If you’re easily woken up by a partner’s movements during the night, you’ll want to look at queen beds with good motion isolation.
Foams in particular do well at limiting the transfer of motion from one part of a mattress to another. Springs, on the other hand, aren’t as good at keeping the surface of the bed still.
We test for motion isolation by measuring waves of movement across a bed’s surface with a seismograph app. The reading tells us how well the mattress absorbs motion: big waves means lots of movement you can feel, and a smaller, flatter line means that motion is being cancelled out.
Which queen-size mattress has the best motion isolation?
The Helix Midnight was the only bed on this list to earn a perfect score in motion isolation. This is all the more impressive when you consider that it’s a hybrid bed, with springs as well as foams in its construction.
Cooling
A queen-size mattress with cooling features will keep couples more comfortable than one that’s prone to retaining heat. Cooling elements can range from gel-infused foams to vented covers and gussets.
Some cooling mattresses also use newer technologies in their construction that can help regulate the temperature of your sleeping environment. Phase-change materials, for example, absorb excess heat and then release it when the surroundings become too cold.
When judging cooling, we use a temperature gun to take the surface temperature of each mattress multiple times: once to set a baseline, once after a tester lies on the bed for 5 minutes, and once after a tester lies on the bed for 10 minutes.
We look at the difference between 5- and 10-minute temperatures to see how much (or how little) a bed heats up.
What’s the best cooling queen-sized bed?
The WinkBed would be my recommendation if cooling is a big priority for you—it has multiple features designed to beat the heat.
However, most hybrid beds on this list will cool you down pretty well due to the airflow around their springs. All of them except the Helix Midnight got a 4 out of 5 in the cooling category during our tests. (The Midnight ran a little warmer, and was given a 3 out of 5.)
It’s the all-foam beds that tend to heat up, and our temperature testing confirmed this: the Bear Original and the Nolah Signature received a 3 out of 5 in this category.
Bounce
Also known as “responsiveness,” bounce refers to how quickly and strongly a queen mattress’s materials bounce back into shape. A bouncy bed isn’t just fun to jump around on—its surface also helps propel you as you move (rather than restricting you). We recommend beds with a lot of responsiveness to combination sleepers who shift around a lot in their sleep.
The springiness of a queen-size mattress can also help or hinder sexual activity. Latex, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses are responsive and buoyant for easier repositioning. However, the slow-moving nature of memory foam may make people feel stuck during intimacy.
To test a bed’s bounce, we jump around on it! We also drop a medicine ball and a lacrosse ball on its surface to see how high they’re launched and how snappily the bed’s materials bounce back.
What’s the bounciest queen bed?
The WinkBed was the only bed to score 5 out of 5 in the bounce category during testing. Its springs and foam layers were very responsive, and we found repositioning on this mattress to be a breeze.
Body Type
Plus-size sleepers usually experience a given bed as softer than a petite person does, because a larger body sinks deeper into a mattress.
For this reason, we recommend firmer queen beds for heavy people and softer queen beds for lightweight people. For most sleepers, including couples, a medium-firm mattress should work well.
A queen bed’s weight capacity will tell you how many pounds it can hold without sustaining damage or starting to sag. If you’re a heavier person or you plan on sleeping with a partner, this is an important detail to know.
Many mattress companies also offer mattresses designed for heavy people. These mattresses have stronger support components and a firmer feel than other models.
Sleeping Position
Back sleepers will likely do well on a queen mattress that is not overly firm or soft. They’ll want a bed that evenly supports their weight while filling in the space beneath the curve of their lumbar spine (also known as the lower back).
Side sleepers can experience intense pressure buildup in their hips and shoulders, as these areas bear lots of weight on a small point of contact. Therefore, these people tend to enjoy a softer queen mattress that relieves pressure and contours to their curves.
Stomach sleepersprefer a firmer sleep surface, particularly one that supports their hips to keep their spine well-aligned.
Combination sleepers will probably prefer a medium-firm bed, as this “neutral” firmness has the most universal appeal. Combination sleepers should also enjoy a highly responsive bed because a bouncy surface helps with repositioning.
Ease of Transport
Transporting a queen-size bed from one room or home to another is no easy feat. When you first order your mattress, consider the process of getting it unpackaged and set up in your room.
Does the brand offer white glove delivery, like Saatva? Or will you have to carry it to its place (and possibly up or down stairs) yourself? Does the bed have handles on the sides to make rotating and lifting it easier?
Try to recruit at least one other person whenever you have to move a queen bed. These mattresses can be heavy, and you’ll need help navigating one around corners and through doors.
Budget
Expect to pay between 1,000 and 2,000 dollars for a modern queen bed — and more for one with standout features.
Luxury models, as well as hybrid and latex beds, will be costlier than more traditional innerspring and all-foam mattresses. Be skeptical of any mattress that’s priced extremely low without a lot of information on its construction.
You can likely find budget-friendly queen mattresses during certain holiday sales or promotions, so plan your purchase wisely.
Mattress Materials
The material that your queen-size mattress is made of is ultimately going to determine its feel. Elements like bounce, responsiveness, sinkage, contouring, and firmness can all depend on the type of mattress you buy.
Innerspring Queen Mattresses
Innerspring mattresses have come a long way since their first inception. Today’s innerspring beds typically have coils made from durable steel and are pocketed in fabric sleeves, which help muffle noise and motion. See our favorite picks in our list of the best innerspring mattresses.
Coils will add support, bounce, and airflow to a queen mattress, but depending on the bed’s initial comfort layers, innerspring models may feel too firm or reactive to some sleepers.
Hybrid Queen Mattresses
Hybrid mattresses have both springs and foam in their construction. Thanks to the coils, they typically have great support and cooling capabilities. These benefits are coupled with pressure relief and plushness on the surface from their foam layers.
Hybrid queen beds are therefore quite versatile and give sleepers a little bit of everything. They can be more expensive than other mattress types, however.
Memory Foam Queen Mattresses
Memory foam is a type of poly foam with a high viscosity and density, meaning it slowly but soothingly conforms to your body when you lie on top of it. Memory foam queen beds are known for providing superior motion isolation and pressure relief.
Many modern memory foams also include gels within their structure to enhance their cooling properties. Without gels or other temperature-regulating additions, memory foam can easily overheat.
Latex Queen Mattresses
Latex foam layers are made from the processed sap of rubber trees and provide a more eco-friendly alternative to poly foams. You’ll typically see two types of latex foam: Dunlop and Talalay. They differ in how they’re manufactured, with Dunlop typically the firmer of the two.
Latex queen beds excel at combining responsiveness with pressure relief. However, because they often have many certifications around their natural and/or organic materials, latex mattresses can be relatively pricey.
Best Queen Mattress FAQs
What are the dimensions of a queen bed?
A queen-size bed is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.
What’s the best queen-size mattress?
We chose the Saatva Classic as the best queen-size mattress for this roundup, based on the reliable support you get from its two innerspring units and notably strong edges. It also scored well for cooling and bounce, so we think it should be a great bed for couples who don’t mind all that springiness.
If you prefer feeling swaddled by motion-isolating foam, however, the Nolah Signature may be a better choice for you.
What’s the best coil count for a queen mattress?
The best queen mattresses will have a coil count between 600 and 1,000 springs or so. A high coil count doesn’t guarantee a quality bed, but it’s one indicator among many of careful construction and durable support.
How much should I pay for a good queen-size mattress?
Good queen-size beds cost between $1,000 and $2,000 these days, but you can often buy them at a much lower price during sales.
