Best Mattresses Made in the USA

My fellow Lead Product Tester, Julia, and I have conducted hands-on tests for nearly six dozen mattresses. The vast majority of these beds are made in the USA. Considering this can be an important component for many consumers, I have assembled a comprehensive list of the best made-in-the-USA beds that Julia and I tested. For a bed to earn this title, the bed must be manufactured in the United States, and most of the mattress’s materials must also be produced here.

I, along with other Sleep Advisor mattress testers, evaluate each mattress based on body types and sleep positions because no one-style-fits-all bed is available. We also examine cooling, firmness, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support to give you as much detailed information as possible so you can make a knowledgeable purchasing decision.

Check out my top choices and consider which will help you achieve your best rest.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Sleep Advisor uses hands-on testing to bring you the most comprehensive mattress reviews. This gives us a genuine understanding of the feel and performance of each mattress.

For our Best Mattresses Made in the USA roundup, we focused on top-tier beds made in America. In addition to being produced in the U.S., we concentrated on those that used quality materials, had generous policies, and provided excellent comfort.

We also used factors such as sleeping positions, body weight, cooling elements, motion isolation, pressure relief, and more to present you with a detailed list.

Loren Bullock is a lead product tester for Sleep Advisor
As a product tester at Sleep Advisor, I test mattresses every week in our facility.

What We Look for in USA-Made Mattresses

Made in the USA

When you’re buying a mattress that says it’s made in the USA, it’s important to look for the specifics. Ideally, you want a company that manufactures their mattresses in the States and uses American-sourced materials.

In some cases, U.S.-based companies make their mattresses here but use materials sourced elsewhere (or at least some of them are). To make this list, the company should be based in the U.S., and the manufacturing process and/or materials should come from here.

Compatibility with Many Sleepers

We have many types of sleepers here in the States, so it’s important to find something that adapts to all of us. The most versatile mattresses typically have a medium to medium-firm feel, which generally tends to accommodate most people and sleep positions. We also like to include beds that have either all foam or a combination of foam and coils, since these can often work for more sleep styles.

Support

Good support is crucial for a good night’s sleep. We usually look for a firm base with either coils or high-density foam that prevents you from bottoming out.

Some beds have zoned support that holds the hips, knees, and shoulders in alignment, which is particularly good if you have back pain. Also, firmer beds tend to be better at supporting your body than softer ones that let you sink a bit more.

Why the Helix Midnight Luxe Earned Editor’s Pick

The Helix Midnight Luxe, with its zoned support, provides firm lifting for the midsection and a softer feel for lighter areas like the shoulders. The Midnight Luxe’s zoning also lends to spinal alignment and overall comfort.

I tested the Helix Midnight myself, and this made-in-the-USA mattress has superior temperature regulation, earning a 5 out of 5 rating in this category. This is excellent if you often overheat at night or sleep beside someone since the extra body heat can accumulate.

This mattress’s balanced feel and versatility, combined with how well it tested in many categories, is why it is our Editor’s Pick.

Image Showing Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

What’s the Helix Midnight Luxe Made Of?

The Helix Midnight Luxe comprises six layers and is 13.5 inches tall.

Inside the Helix Midnight Luxe

    • Layer 1 – Cover. The first layer of the Helix Midnight Luxe is the premium quilted cooling pillow top. This mattress has a 1-inch breathable TENCEL™ cover, or you can upgrade to the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover for an additional fee.

    • Layer 2 – Comfort Layer. Layer two of this mattress comprises Helix’s Responsive Foam that cradles and supports your body.

    • Layer 3 – Comfort Layer. Designed with Copper Gel Memory Foam, the Midnight Luxe’s third layer has a medium firmness feel that contours and reacts to your body weight.

    • Layer 4 – Transition Layer. The fourth layer provides support and stability and ergonomically reacts to your body weight.

    • Layer 5 – Zoned Body Shape Layer. This layer consists of up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils and is zoned to provide extra support under your hips. This section also provides additional lumbar and edge support.

    • Layer 6 – Base Layer. The final layer is constructed from DuraDense Foam, providing durability and stability to the entire mattress.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Offers the perfect balanced medium feel—not too soft; not too firm. There is definitely a sense of overall support.” – Loren Bullock, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Enhanced cooling properties – As mentioned, it earned a top score during my testing for cooling. If you run hot at night, you should like this one.
Zoned support – This bed features a zoned support design in which heavier body parts (like the midsection) have extra support, and lighter areas (like the shoulders) are softer.
Cons
Too soft for some sleepers – Heavyweight stomach sleepers may not receive enough support around their hips.
Only hybrid options – Fans of all-foam beds may not like that this mattress doesn’t offer a memory foam version.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Luxe

On Helix’s website, the mattress scores 4.5 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress for its customized support but have reported that it may not be the best option for those who prefer an exceptionally soft sleep surface.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Mattress Made in the USA for Couples

Couples have to share their sleeping space. For this reason, there are certain mattress features that may be more important to bedmates than they are solo sleepers. The WinkBed earned the Best Mattress Made in the USA for Couples spot due to its outstanding performance in many categories important to co-sleepers.

I loved its incredible edge support, allowing couples to utilize the entire surface without fearing falling off the side or gravitating to the middle. The dense foam layers also provide excellent motion isolation. Those with restless partners are likely to sleep undisturbed because this mattress can absorb motion before it travels to the other side of the bed. The WinkBed’s coils also provide some bounce, and this feature can be beneficial for sexually active couples.

WinkBed mattress side view

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

All WinkBed mattresses are handcrafted, and this means that some of the dimensions can vary. However, all models are 13.5 inches tall and consist of three layers.

Inside The WinkBed

  • Layer 1 – Cover. The first layer of the WinkBed’s cover is made from TENCEL™, a cooling material that absorbs and wicks moisture.
  • Layer 2 – Euro pillow top. Under the cover of the WinkBed, you’ll find a 2-inch Euro pillow top made of gel-infused foam.
  • Layer 3 – The innerspring unit. Layer three consists of 8-inch individually wrapped coils with five targeted zone areas to support heavier body areas and allow lighter parts like the shoulders to sink further in the mattress.
  • Layer 4 – The perimeter. The perimeter of the bed features WinkBed’s Extra-Edge™ Support. This feature provides excellent edge support.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It feels like a luxury hotel bed.” – Loren Bullock, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Customization – I appreciate that the WinkBed comes in multiple firmness levels, including Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus.
Cooling capabilities – In my testing, I rated the WinkBed well for cooling, giving it a 4 out of 5.
Cons
Price point – The WinkBed isn’t the most expensive hybrid mattress on the market, but it is on the pricier side.
Lack of memory foam – Although the WinkBed uses foams, the construction doesn’t include memory foam.

Customer Reviews of the WinkBed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nolah Evolution Earned Best Mattress Made in the USA for Back Pain

People with back pain can have difficulty getting a good night’s sleep without the right kind of mattress. We think the Nolah Evolution can be great for back pain because it has 8-inch HDMax™ Tri-Zone ™ coils that Nolah states provide 25 percent more support than traditional springs. Stuart, our tester for this mattress, noticed these supportive coils during his hands-on testing. “I could even feel the zoned support in the springs working to support my body weight appropriately.”

We also love that the Nolah Evolution comes in multiple firmness levels, including Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm. This means sleepers with back pain can find a feel that’s even more tailored to their body type and sleep position for enhanced overall comfort.

Nolah Evolution cooling test

What’s the Nolah Evolution Made Of?

The Nolah Evolution has eight layers and a total height of 15 inches.

Inside the Nolah Evolution

  • Layer 1 – Cover.  The cover is the first section of the bed that you will contact. It is made of breathable organic cotton with cooling ArcticTex™ fibers. This layer helps keep sleepers cool and dry. It also protects the mattress from spills and germs.
  • Layer 2 – Euro pillow top.  The second layer is 2 inches of breathable foam and high-thermal conductivity quilting that gently hugs your body while drawing away excess heat.
  • Layer 3 – Border gusset. A unique 4-inch AirBreath border gusset makes up the Nolah Evolutions third layer. It helps body heat dissipate into the room rather than remaining inside the mattress.
  • Layer 4 – Zoned AirFoam™. Layer four consists of zoned AirFoam™ that provides additional pressure relief and responsiveness. This feature is particularly beneficial to side sleepers. It also aids in cooling as AirFoam™ is highly breathable and completely temperature neutral.
  • Layer 5 – Support foam.  Under the Zoned AirFoam layer, you’ll find 2 inches of CertiPUR-US® certified CoreComfort support foam. This layer helps relieve pressure and provides top-to-bottom support.
  • Layer 6 – Transition foam. The sixth layer is made from 1 inch of EverAdapt transition foam that adds subtle responsiveness to the bed, allowing combination sleepers to move without feeling stuck. It also absorbs motion, so couples can sleep undisturbed even if their partner is restless.
  • Layer 7 – Coils and reinforced edges.  The bulk of the bed’s height comes from the 8-inch HDMax™ Tri-Zone™ coils found in layer seven. The coils are individually wrapped for motion isolation and zoned into three areas for targeted support. Thicker coils along the perimeter of this layer also help with edge support.
  • Layer 8 – Foundation. The base layer of the Nolah Evolution is made from recycled plant fibers. It gives the bed overall stability and durability. This bed also has border fabric with carrying handles. The non-skid backside ensures that the mattress stays in place.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Perfectly straight spine and great alignment for sleep positions.” – Julia Forbes, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Multiple cooling features – The bed includes multiple cooling properties, such as ArcticTex™ fibers, a border gusset, breathable foams, and coils.
Versatility – The Nolah Evolution is available in three firmness levels: Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
Cons
Bulky – This is a tall and somewhat heavy mattress, so moving it may not be easy.
Lacks support for some sleepers – During her testing, Julia, an average-weight stomach sleeper, said she would have preferred the Firm variation instead of the Luxury Firm one she tried.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Evolution

Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

Find out more about this bed in our Nolah Evolution mattress review.

Why the Bear Elite Hybrid Earned Best Mattress Made in the USA for Hot Sleepers

Keeping cool is one of the most essential factors in getting quality sleep. One way to ensure you don’t overheat in bed is to get a mattress with top-notch cooling properties, like the Bear Elite Hybrid.

Our team chose this model for hot sleepers because it has coils that promote airflow, preventing heat from building up, and it utilizes copper-infused memory foam and a cool-to-the-touch cover. In addition to its excellent temperature-regulating features, the Bear Elite Hybrid is constructed with durable materials that can benefit athletes, couples, and those with back pain.

Bear Elite Hybrid mattress image

What’s the Bear Elite Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches tall and consists of six layers.

The Layers of the Bear Elite Hybrid

  • Layer 1 – Cooling, hand-quilted cover.  The soft cover is made from PCM fabric and Celliant fiber that helps keep you cool all night. It provides a gentle hug-like feel but keeps sleepers from sinking too far or feeling stuck. Bear also states that it also helps in recovery.
  • Layer 2 – Copper-infused memory foam.  The second layer of the Bear Elite Hybrid consists of copper-infused memory foam. The copper disperses body heat efficiently from the mattress, allowing for a cool night of sleep.
  • Layer 3 – Transition foam.  Layer three transitions the sleeper’s body from the soft upper layers to the more supportive layers below. It also provides ergonomic support and comfortable contouring.
  • Layer 4 – Individually encased coils.  The Bear Elite Hybrid’s fourth layer comprises individually wrapped coils that offer balanced support. Higher gauged coils are located in the center of the bed to provide additional support for heavier body parts. This section also offers breathability, pressure relief, and motion isolation.
  • Layer 5 – Reinforced edge coils.  The perimeter of the encased coils is comprised of reinforced coils. This feature aids overall stability and prevents people from sagging too far in the mattress when sitting or sleeping close to the edge.
  • Layer 6 – High-density support foam.  The final layer is a thin, high-density foam that supports the layers above it.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It really, truly does have one of the best balances of comfort and support that we’ve seen.” – Loren Bullock, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Firmness options – The Bear Elite Hybrid is offered in Soft, Medium, and Firm.
Supportive construction – This mattress has individually wrapped coils that move separately and are designed to provide extra support in the middle of the body.
Cons
Too soft for some – Sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may find this bed too soft to offer adequate support, particularly stomach sleepers.
Price point – This bed’s higher price point may be too expensive for some.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid

According to Bear’s website, the Bear Elite scores about 4.5 out of 5 stars. Some customers find the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress too firm for their liking, but it receives praise in its reviews for its advanced cooling technology and pressure relief.

Why the Saatva Classic Earned Best Luxury Mattress Made in the USA

Our pick for Best Luxury Mattress Made in the USA is the Saatva Classic, and classics are called that for a reason. Saatva offers hybrid and all-foam beds, but the Classic uses a coil-on-coil structure for this luxurious, elevated bed.

Our team appreciates the manufacturer’s eye for detail in the comforting Euro top, supportive Lumbar Zone® Technology, and eco-conscious materials. The Saatva Classic, manufactured to hold up to 300 pounds per side, is a durable bed that should withstand the test of time. My fellow lead product tester, Julia, got to test the Saatva Classic and specifically recommended it for affordable luxury shoppers.

Saatva Mattress Side view in Sleep Advisor's testing studio.

What’s the Saatva Classic Made Of?

The Saatva Classic is offered in 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch heights.

Inside the Saatva Classic

  • Layer 1 – Euro pillow top.  Sleepers will first be met with the Saatva Classic’s 3-inch Euro pillow top. This layer is made with Lumbar Zone® Quilting, providing more support in the middle third of the mattress, where the most weight is concentrated. It is covered in breathable cotton.
  • Layer 2 – Back support.  The second layer offers pressure relief using high-density memory foam and spinal alignment by incorporating Saatva’s Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire.
  • Layer 3 – Contouring comfort. The next layer of the Saatva Classic is made up of hundreds of Lumbar Zone® pocketed 14.5-gauge recycled steel coils. The third layer contours to your body and helps relieve pressure. This layer is also instrumental in absorbing motion.
  • Layer 4 – Supportive base.  The final layer is the base coil unit. It consists of 13-gauge tempered steel that prevents sagging and provides additional airflow.
  • Edge support – The Saatva Classic uses high-density foam rails to create stable, firm edge support.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“For a handmade, customizable bed that uses eco-friendly material, the price is reasonable, and the warranty gives other mattress brands a run for their money.” – Julia Forbes, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Affordable luxury – The Saatva Classic has the features and durability of luxury mattresses, but for the features you get, the price point for this bed is surprisingly affordable.
Lumbar Zone® Zone Technology – Saatva uses a patented design that provides additional support to the heavier parts of the body.
Cons
Return fee – Saatva allows for returns, but there is a $99 charge for shipping it back to them.
Motion transfer – Julia pointed out that the motion isolation overall is lacking, which could be an issue for couples.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Curious about the Saatva Classic? You can read more about it in our in-depth Saatva mattress review

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Earned Best Budget Mattress Made in the USA

Quality mattresses can be found in every price range, and it should be noted that the most expensive mattress doesn’t necessarily equate to the best. Our team picked the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid for the Best Budget Mattress Made in the USA for several reasons, including its premium materials and high-quality craftsmanship. Additionally, we love that this bed has three firmness options for better customization.

Often, quality-made hybrid mattresses come at a steep price point, but this mattress is one of the most affordable hybrid options on the market. The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is produced in Brooklyn Bedding’s Arizona factory and shipped directly to consumers, and this is one of the ways that the manufacturer passes savings on to shoppers.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid temperature and cooling testing

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Made Of?

There are five layers to the 12.25-inch tall Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

  • Layer 1 – Quilted top.  You’ll first come into contact with a 1.5-inch breathable quilted top that wicks moisture away and resists impressions.
  • Layer 2 – Comfort foam.  The layer below the quilted top is made with 1.5 inches of hyperelastic foam. This responsive material allows sleepers to reposition without feeling stuck.
  • Layer 3 – Transition foam.  One inch of VariFlex™ transition foam comprises the third layer of the Signature Hybrid. It provides comfort, compression, and support.
  • Layer 4 – Encased coils.  The fourth layer of the bed has 8-inch Ascension® coils. Hundreds of individually encased coils provide contouring, edge support, and motion isolation.
  • Layer 5 – Flex base.  The .25-inch flex base layer reinforces the Ascension ® coils while adding to the durability and longevity of the mattress.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“Pillowy surface is putting in the work because as soon as you lie down, it responds to hug around you softly.” – Loren Bullock, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Responsiveness – The hyperelastic response comfort foam quickly responds to the sleeper’s movements for easier repositioning.
Firmness options – The Signature Hybrid is offered in Soft, Medium, and Firm.
Cons
Lacks support for some sleepers – Although this bed has a Firm model, sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may need more support.
Potential for pressure buildup – Some sleepers, such as lightweight side sleepers, may feel that this mattress needs more pressure-relieving capabilities.

Why the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Earned Best Mattress Made in the USA for Side Sleepers

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid is a mattress that we recommend to side sleepers because the top layer wraps people in a deep hug, as noted by our other lead tester, Julia, who tried out this bed first-hand.

As sleepers settle into this mattress, they should notice the comfort layer contouring around their body and relieving pressure.

Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid pressure testing

Although this Medium-Firm model could be suitable for back sleepers as well, Julia noticed that it felt quite plush and cozy while on her side. Side sleepers are more susceptible to pressure buildup around their hips and shoulders, and this mattress’s contouring can certainly help with that.

What’s the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid Made Of?

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid has seven layers and stands 14 inches tall. It’s available in three firmnesses: Firm, Medium-Firm, and Plush.

A Look Inside the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid

  • Layer 1 – Cooling Cover. This cover features heat-conducting polyethylene fibers that should help siphon heat away from your body. It also has handles for easy transportation.
  • Layer 2 – Gel Foam (2 inches). This cooling foam layer is designed to provide support without too much sinking.
  • Layer 3 – Comfort Foam Layer (1.5 inches). A breathable foam layer to help keep air moving.
  • Layer 4 – Responsive Foam Layer (1 inch). This layer bounces back as you move on the mattress surface.
  • Layer 5 – Transitional Foam Layer (1 inch). While transitioning into the coil layer below it, this foam provides extra pressure relief.
  • Layer 6 – Innerspring Unit (8 inches). The innerspring unit of this mattress contains up to 1,023 individually wrapped coils, zoned in 3 distinct areas to give the proper give and support for proper alignment.
  • Layer 7 – High-Density Foam (0.75 inches). Finally, the bed sits on a sturdy base of dense foam.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“With lots of pressure relief around key areas, the Euro pillow top, support, and spine alignment, this mattress is a natural fit for [side sleepers].” – Julia Forbes, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Multiple firmness options – If you want even more cushion, you can get the Plush version of this hybrid.
Isolates motion pretty well – For a hybrid mattress, it canceled out movement better than we expected.
Cons
Dips too much for stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers will need more lift around their hips than this mattress provides.
A bit pricey – The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid retails at more than $2,000 for a queen before discounts.

Why the Plank Firm Earned Best Firm Mattress Made in the USA

As its name implies, the Plank Firm by Brooklyn Bedding specializes in a firmer mattress design. This model is also a flippable mattress that gives you two firmness options in one.

One side of the mattress is firm, but if you desire an even firmer bed, you can flip it to the ultra-firm side. Although both sides are firm, the feel will change slightly depending on your chosen firmness level. The Ultra-Firm side will likely make you feel you’re floating right above the bed, while the Firm side will contour to your body while maintaining excellent spinal alignment.

  • Layer 2 – Support foam.  Below the cover, you’ll find 6 inches of high-density support foam. This foam is extremely firm, and it provides deep compression support.
  • Layer 3 – Response comfort foam.  The third layer is 2 inches tall of supreme response comfort foam. The response comfort foam is firm, but it also provides some contouring.
  • Layer 4 – Quilted bottom.  The fourth and final layer comprises another .75 inches of pillow top that uses sports track-and-jumping stitching for minimal loft. If you flip your mattress, this layer will serve as the cover.

Testing Studio Soundbite

“It doesn’t get more solid than the Plank. This is one of the firmest mattresses on the online market.” – Julia Forbes, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester
Pros
Versatile options – The two-in-one design of the Plank Firm allows sleepers to alternate between the Firm or Ultra-Firm options.
Edge support – The high-density firm foam provides a sturdy perimeter of this all-foam bed.
Cons
Too firm for some sleepers – Some side sleepers and most lightweight people will likely find this bed too firm.
Lack of pressure relief – The firmness levels only allow for a bit of sinkage, so those who need extra pressure relief may need a softer bed.

Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm

On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm gets 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it to be too rigid for their comfort preferences.

Why the Birch Luxe Earned Best Eco-Friendly Mattress Made in the USA

If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly American-made mattress, the Birch Luxe could be your new favorite find.

Birch, a mattress brand owned by Helix, manufactures this mattress. Their Birch Luxe model uses eco-friendly and sustainably sourced materials from the United States. Combining organic wool, cotton, and latex with premium cashmere and reinforced coils, the Birch Luxe offers sleepers an opulent experience that is also good for the planet.

This bed also features important eco-friendly certifications, including GREENGUARD Gold, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Forest Stewardship Council, Rainforest Alliance, Wool Integrity NZ, and Fair Trade.

What’s the Birch Luxe Made Of?

The Birch Luxe’s seven layers add up to around 11.5 inches. You may notice slight variations in the height because the beds are handmade.

The Layers of the Birch Luxe

  • Layer 1 – Cover.  The quilted Euro top cover is made with breathable organic cotton that has a woven finish.
  • Layer 2 – Fire retardant. The second layer of the Birch Luxe uses organic wool, rather than synthetic materials, as a natural fire retardant.
  • Layer 3 – Comfort. Luxurious layer three consists of cashmere fibers for thermoregulation, breathability, and plushness.
  • Layer 4 – Comfort.  The second comfort and fourth total layer employs organic wool to comfort, cool, and keep sleepers dry.
  • Layer 5 – Pressure relief.  Natural latex makes up layer five of the Birch Luxe. This material offers pressure relief and support.
  • Layer 6 – Support.  The Birch Luxe uses up to 1,000 individually encased coils for support in its sixth layer; enforced support under your hips, typically the heaviest part of the body, helps with spinal alignment.
  • Layer 7 – Base.  You’ll find another layer of fire-retardant organic wool at the base of the bed. This material should help keep you safe and provide stability and durability to layers above it.

Our Take

This eco-friendly hybrid bed uses multiple eco-friendly materials and a well-crafted construction to give consumers a quality product that can be good for their sleep and the planet.
Pros
Natural and sustainable sources – Birch Luxe’s seven layers are made up of eco-friendly wool, cotton, latex, and cashmere.
Cooling features – The combination of coils and latex makes this bed an excellent choice for hot sleepers.
Cons
Too firm for some – The Birch Luxe should appeal to a variety of people, but lightweight side sleepers may find it too firm.
Lacks motion isolation – Although the coils isolate some motion, those who sleep with a restless partner may not think it is enough.

Customer Reviews of the Birch Luxe

Earning a 4.9 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website, the Nolah Evolution seems to be a hit. Customers appreciate the Nolah Evolution mattress for its superior pressure relief, but some have mentioned that the edge support could be improved for a more consistent sleep surface.

What Does It Mean If a Mattress Is Made in the USA?

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a product that states it is made in the USA requires that “all or virtually all” of the product be made in the United States.1 The FTC adds that all of the significant parts, processing, and labor must originate in the U.S.

What to Look for in a Mattress Made in the USA

Along with verifying that the product is, in fact, American-made, there are other important mattress qualities you’ll want to consider. This includes everything from the type of mattress to the unique features that can enhance your experience for better rest.

Made in the USA

People looking for the highest-quality mattresses usually prefer USA-made beds due to the high standards. In the United States, we have some of the highest safety and health standards for these products and the materials that go into them. When you buy a bed made in the States, you’re buying one that’s been through rigorous testing to ensure maximum quality and safety against potential health and fire hazards. Plus, many folks like to support more local businesses when they shop.

Compatibility

When companies are designing their beds, they want to make them as compatible for many different people as possible. Another reason compatibility is important? Couples!

A versatile mattress has a better shot of working for both partners, and we all know that when one of us isn’t comfortable, that means there’s probably going to be lots of tossing and turning, which could eventually wake you up as well, no matter the motion isolation. Plus, even if they don’t wake you up, you want them to sleep well, don’t you?

Support

Support is among the first things you should look for in a mattress because it supports a healthy posture and better sleep. Good support comes from the materials and construction of the bed. The materials should be strong and dense so they keep you lifted and don’t develop a dent fairly quickly. Bonus points if you get a mattress with zoned support that holds your heavier parts, like hips, better.

Support is an important part of our testing process, and when we evaluate a bed for this, we are looking at how supported we feel in each sleeping position (side, back, and stomach). If we notice too much sinking, that tells us overall support is lacking.

Type of Mattress

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses have been around for the longest and are typically thought of as a traditional bed. Although memory foam and hybrid mattresses have exploded in popularity recently, innerspring mattresses can offer attractive features and durable construction.

Innerspring mattresses are usually one of the more breathable options; the coils allow airflow, which prevents heat from building up throughout the night. Those who sleep on innerspring mattresses also typically enjoy solid edge support and bounce. Additionally, traditional coil beds are known for their affordability.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine features and materials from all-foam and innerspring beds. This versatility makes them a solid choice for sleepers. The construction of hybrid mattresses typically consists of top layers made of memory foam followed by innerspring coils underneath. The memory foam provides contouring and pressure relief, while the coils give support and stability.

However, within the basic construction of the hybrid design, there is plenty of room for variations. Some manufacturers replace memory foam with latex or proprietary foam materials at the top, while others include foam under the coils.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid Construction from the lab
The inside construction of a hybrid mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are popular because of their convenience and comfort.

Memory foam beds are often less costly than hybrids, and they are often excellent at gently contouring the body and relieving pressure around the shoulders, lower back, and hips.

One of the drawbacks of memory foam is that it can be sweltering in its original state. Manufacturers noted this and changed the structure by adding cooling gels, copper, or graphite into the foam. Memory foam beds can also utilize open-cell construction, allowing air to flow freely through the foam.

Latex Mattresses

Latex is a naturally cooling and responsive material that provides sleepers excellent ease of movement, pressure relief, and support. These mattresses are typically made of Talalay or Dunlop latex, which refers to the manufacturing processes used to create the layers. Although similar, sleepers will likely notice a slightly different feel depending on the method used.

Latex mattresses are usually more expensive than other mattress types, but they are also one of the most environmentally friendly bed choices available. They are also highly durable and should make for a good investment.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Mattress Made in the USA

Sleeping Position

Back, side, stomach, and combination sleepers all have different firmness, support, and pressure-relief needs, and to optimize their sleep experience, they will need a bed that complements these needs.

Back sleepers typically sleep best on medium-firm, supportive mattresses that offer good spinal alignment and relieve pressure around the lower back and shoulders. If you prefer to sleep on your stomach, you will likely want a mattress on the firmer side. Firm, supportive mattresses can help keep stomach sleepers’ hips from sagging too far into the bed, so they’re spine remains in a healthy alignment.

A soft to medium-firm mattress provides comfort and gentle contouring for side sleepers who bear much of their weight on the shoulders and hips. However, these folks will also want to ensure their mattress is supportive enough for their spine.

Sleepers who change positions throughout the night need a versatile and responsive mattress. These sleepers are often most comfortable on a bed with middle-of-the-road firmness that’s easy to change positions on.

Loren testing edge support
I test every mattress for every sleeping position.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

A sleeper’s weight and body type are important because these can influence how a bed feels. For example, the type of mattress that works best for a heavyweight sleeper is usually less conducive to those with lighter or average builds.

Lightweight sleepers are likely to rest comfortably on plush beds that allow them to sink into them a bit. Soft beds can also provide these sleepers with pressure relief that they aren’t likely to get on a firm mattress.

If you fall in the middle of the scale, you’ll want to look for a mattress that lands around the halfway point of firmness. Medium-firm beds should provide these sleepers with a solid mix of support and comfort.

Those weighing over 230 pounds will likely want a firmer mattress made from durable, highly supportive materials. This is because heavier people can push through softer layers too quickly, causing poor spine alignment and pressure buildup.

Firmness

Our team rates mattress firmness on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the absolute firmest feel.

Although how soft or hard you like your mattress is a personal preference, different firmness levels are more conducive to various sleep positions and body types.

Many people, especially co-sleepers, may be drawn to a medium-firm bed because of their versatility. These mattresses often provide a mixture of spinal support and pressure relief.

However, if you are on the heavier side, you will likely need a firmer mattress to achieve an adequate amount of support. Conversely, lightweight sleepers often find the most comfort on softer mattresses that contour their curves and take pressure off their smaller frames.

Cooling

For many, staying cool through the night is a cornerstone of quality sleep. If this is important to you, it is good to remember that some mattress types have better cooling properties than others.

Memory foam mattresses tend to be warmer because the foam is dense and doesn’t allow for airflow. However, many manufacturers now include gel infusions or other cooling technologies to prevent heat buildup.

The coils in traditional innerspring and hybrid mattresses allow air to circulate easily, and as such, these beds typically have excellent temperature regulation. Latex beds are also a great choice if you want a cooling bed. Latex, made from the sap of rubber trees, has an open cell structure that allows for plentiful airflow.

Our team of mattress testes put the Helix Plus mattress to the test and tested its temperature control features with a temp regulation gun.
I use a temp gun to test how quickly a mattress cools down after I lay on it for five minutes.

Check out our Thermoregulation Guide and Best Cooling Mattress for more information on this topic.

Motion Isolation

How well a mattress isolates motion is usually important for those who share a bed with a partner or pet. A restless bedmate can disturb a light sleeper if their bed transfers this motion from one side to the other.

Memory foam mattresses are often recommended for couples because of their strong motion-isolating capabilities. However, many hybrid mattresses can do a good job at this, too, because they have foam layers to absorb movement, along with pocketed coils instead of interconnected ones.

Sex

Sexually active people often prefer responsive or bouncy beds because these features can help prevent couples from feeling stuck and allow them to move around more easily. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to have plenty of bounce, and latex is a very responsive material.

Memory foam, on the other hand, is more slow-moving, so it’s not necessarily ideal in this case. If you really want a bed with memory foam, though, a hybrid with this material can be a great compromise since you’ll also have coils for some bounce.

More: Best Mattress for Sex

Pressure Relief

A mattress that prevents pressure buildup around areas of the body that come into contact with it can help deliver a more comfortable sleeping experience. For many sleepers, a medium-firm bed should provide adequate support and pressure relief to sleep well throughout the night and wake without aches and pains.

However, those with smaller or larger body types may need to look for a bed with softer or firmer firmness levels to achieve the correct balance support and pressure relief. For instance, lighter people often need a softer mattress, which they can sink into to ensure they get enough contouring for pressure relief.

More: Best Mattress for Pressure Relief

Edge Support

Edge support may seem inconsequential, but if your bed sags or sinks along the perimeter, it can make getting out of bed difficult. Also, it can prevent you from utilizing the entire sleeping surface because beds with poor edge support often mean that people gravitate toward the center of the bed.

Therefore, finding a mattress with good resistance along the edge can be especially helpful for couples and those with mobility issues. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses typically have excellent edge support, and many newer memory foam models have higher-density foam around the perimeter, providing additional weight resistance.

Budget

Setting a budget when you’re shopping for a mattress is essential. A new mattress can cost a lot of money, and you will likely have it for many years. Therefore, you want to get the best bed you can afford.

However, the most expensive mattress isn’t necessarily the best, and inexpensive choices don’t necessarily mean low quality. The mattress industry is competitive, and direct-to-consumer companies have made getting a high-quality American-made mattress more affordable than ever. Find our picks for the best budget mattresses here.

Reasons to Buy a Mattress Made in the U.S.A.

Mattress Quality

Mattresses made in the U.S. must comply with quality control and manufacturing regulations set by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.2 This means they are often made of better quality materials and will last longer than those made overseas.

In general, mattresses made in the U.S. must meet standards for flammability and cannot contain chemicals or toxins, including phthalates, formaldehyde, and CFCs.3 Many of these regulations are self-enforced though, so it’s up to the manufacturer to follow through.

The good news is that many mattresses come with third-party certifications to ensure the quality and safety of the materials. One of the most known certifications for mattress foams is CertiPUR-US®. If you’re buying a mattress containing standard polyurethane foam or memory foam, we recommend making sure those foams are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Environmental Impact

Mattress manufacturing can have a huge impact on the environment, so if you’re trying to live a greener and more sustainable lifestyle, don’t leave your mattress out of the equation. One reason, which we mentioned above, is that U.S. mattress manufacturing regulations require companies to avoid chemicals (like formaldehyde) that could be toxic to the environment and human health.

Additionally, many U.S.-based manufacturing plants create less pollution than factories that make mattresses in other countries. Shipping is another environmental factor that might encourage you to buy a mattress made in the States. Shipping a mattress overseas typically has a huge environmental impact, burning more fossil fuels and creating more pollution during shipment than a domestic-made mattress.

Some U.S.-based mattress chains, such as ZenHaven, Avocado, and Sleep On Latex even produce eco-friendly mattresses. These mattresses often substitute synthetic materials for more natural or organic ones.

Labor and Economic Conditions

U.S. labor laws are stricter than those in many foreign countries. Depending on where an overseas mattress is produced, workers may face poor working conditions that, in the U.S., would qualify as labor law violations.

Labor issues to think about are things like low pay and unsafe working conditions. There are labor standards and requirements in the U.S. that protect workers against unfair and unsafe conditions that aren’t always present or enforced in other countries.

When you buy a mattress made in the U.S., you’re supporting a local economy. This means more jobs for Americans and a percentage of your purchase price going back into manufacturing American-made goods.

Some U.S. brands even do charitable initiatives to support their local communities. For example, companies may donate a mattress to someone in need for every mattress sold, or they may offer discounts to certain groups, such as veterans, healthcare workers, or teachers.

Mattress Quality

Mattresses made in the United States can be more expensive than their foreign counterparts, leading many people to opt for the cheaper, overseas option. But a cheaper price might mean cheaper quality and flimsier regulations. Many foreign-made mattresses may not be produced to the same quality or comply with the same strict environmental and labor regulations as those produced in the U.S.

One area of cost where you’re likely to win with a domestically-made mattress is shipping. Remember that your shipping costs will most likely be lower when you purchase a mattress made here in the States because the product simply doesn’t need to travel as far.
