When a mattress is named after a creature known for its love of snoozing, expectations for an amazing sleep experience are understandable. Savvy budget shoppers will likely be drawn to this mattress because it is competitively priced, features durable and cooling materials, and extras not typically seen at this price point. I spent some time with this mattress to see if it were a Bear you’d want to be left in the woods with. So, let’s get into it and see if the Bear Pro Hybrid roars or should be left to hibernate.

Who I Recommend the Bear Pro Hybrid For:
- Couples – The Bear Pro Hybrid earned high marks in categories important to couples, including motion isolation, edge support, and bounce, making it a great choice for co-sleepers.
- Bang for the buck shoppers – The folks at Bear realize that a great bed doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. This comfortable and well-constructed bed costs less than most of its competitors.
- Back sleepers – This mattress’s level of support is off the chart, and I think that back sleepers will appreciate how the foam and coils provide excellent support. I was a big fan of how this mattress made my lower back feel.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Bear Pro For:
- Folks who heat up at night – As it comes, the Bear Pro Hybrid isn’t particularly cooling. You can add the Celliant Pillow Top Cover, which will likely help with this, but it costs extra. Find cooling mattresses here.
- Fans of traditional memory foam – Although this bed is made with memory foam, it doesn’t have that slow sinking, deep hug feeling to it. So, if that is what you’re after, this probably isn’t the best fit for you. Find more traditional memory foam beds here.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Pro Hybrid
The Bear Pro Hybrid has 68 reviews and received 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s official website. Customers praised its support and thought that this mattress helped them sleep better. Kathleen C. said, “I really enjoy the support of the Bear mattress.” Others, however, were not impressed with the support, with David J. stating that it was an extremely thin mattress with limited support.
Testing the Bear Pro Hybrid
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
Mattress tests combine subjective feelings with quantitative data. I tested the Bear Pro Hybrid to see how it felt and how it made me feel. Is it soft like a marshmallow or firm like a park bench? Does it feel cool to the touch? Did it relieve that pain in my lower back?
I also talked to a longtime mattress tester colleague in a different weight class to see how he felt about this bed. To bring it all together, I used tools such as a temperature gun, pressure map, and seismograph app to check if their readings matched my feelings before assigning performance scores based on our mattress scoring rubric.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7/10
All mattresses tested are given a firmness ranking between 1 and 10. I gave the Bear Pro Hybrid a 7 because it was a little harder than medium-firm beds, which generally fall between 5 and 6.5. Although this bed uses memory foam, it didn’t have that soft, contouring feeling associated with many memory foam beds. This firmness level of the Bear Pro Hybrid would make it a great choice for back sleepers.
How Does the Bear Pro Hybrid Feel?
The Bear Pro Hybrid has a fairly no-frills appearance, and I expected a utilitarian feel. However, I was pleasantly surprised to be met by a soft quilted cover that welcomed me into a supportive but cozy bed. Although it didn’t wrap me in the deep hug of other memory foam beds, the upper layers did provide some comforting contouring before the coils kicked in and brought a solid sense of security.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Bear Pro Hybrid can hold a total of 750 pounds.
Side Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | The Bear Pro Hybrid is likely too firm for most lightweight side sleepers. I feel confident that most of them would experience pressure build-up around their shoulders and hips. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | Although the pressure map didn’t show as much build-up as I thought it would, this wouldn’t be one of my top choices as a part-time side sleeper. It felt fairly harsh around my shoulder and ribs, and I kept fidgeting to find a more comfortable angle. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | My fellow mattress reviewer said he felt a bit of pressure around his shoulders and hips when he tried out the Bear Pro Hybrid. |
Back Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | Back sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds may find this bed too firm, but if they prefer a firmer bed, this could be an excellent choice, as it will provide ample spinal alignment. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | I loved this bed when I tested it on my back. It filled in the space around my lower back. It felt so good that it might convert me into a back-sleeping believer. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | My colleague was also a fan of this bed when he tested it on his back. He said it was “a dream.” He also noted that the base layer of coils supported his body and that his spine was never out of alignment. |
Stomach Sleepers
Lightweight Sleepers | In keeping with our theme for lightweight sleepers, I think this bed is a little too firm for them. However, since it is right on that line, those who prefer a sturdy feel could try this bed. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | As someone who starts on her side but flips to her stomach at some point, the Bear Pro Hybrid got a big chef’s kiss from me. It kept my hips elevated and my spine wonderfully aligned. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | Showing how a bed’s feel can change depending on body type, my colleague, who weighs over 230 pounds, felt that he needed more support under his hips, which led to some strain in his lower back as well. |
Pressure Relief
5/5
The Bear Pro Hybrid hit a home run on pressure relief. Although I couldn’t get completely comfortable on my side, the pressure relief map I used to test this performance category showed little buildup when I was in this position. When blue and green are the primary colors seen on the pressure map reading, like in the case of the Bear Pro Hybrid, it indicates that you are close to being pressure-free. If these pictures have a good portion of red and yellow outlines, you know there is a lot of pressure around those areas.
This is one of those situations where it comes down to personal preference, though, and the feeling just wasn’t hitting the mark for me. However, it could do so well for someone else in the same weight category as me. When it came to pressure relief when I was on my back and stomach, the Bear Pro Hybrid was an all-star. I loved how it supported my lower back and my hips.
With this in mind, I still think it was worthy of a 5 out of 5 score here.

Is the Bear Pro Hybrid Good for Pain Relief?
I think the Bear Pro Hybrid should perform well in relieving pain in the back and hips. My only concern is for those who experience shoulder pain, as I noticed some pressure around mine when I was lying on my side.
Back Pain | When I was on this bed, I quickly felt some stiffness in my lower back melt away. The foam contoured around my lower back, and the supportiveness kept my spine aligned. These feelings, coupled with the pressure map readings, make me feel that this bed would relieve back pain for many sleepers. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | The Bear Pro Hybrid kept my hips elevated and my spine aligned. I appreciated how it cushioned my hips without letting them sink too far into the mattress. By keeping my hips elevated and preventing my spine from dipping into the bed at awkward angles, I think this mattress will do a great job of relieving hip pain. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | There was some uncomfortable pressure around my shoulder when I was on my side. I think it may be too firm for people with shoulder pain. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
The Bear Pro Hybrid’s combination of foam and coils makes it shine bright when it comes to support. My entire body felt supported on this mattress, but I was incredibly impressed with how it made my lower back feel. The foam layers comfortably contoured the gap in my lower back as the innerspring elevated my hips. This provided spot-on spinal alignment and a relaxing, soothing feeling.
Although I enjoyed this bed’s support most when on my back, I was also thrilled with how it supported me on my side or stomach. With the Bear Pro Hybrid, there is little worry about dipping too far into the mattress or sleeping at awkward angles, which is why it earned a perfect score in this category.
Motion Isolation
5/5
If you’ve lost sleep to a restless partner’s flipping and flopping, you’ll want to move the Bear Pro Hybrid to the top of your list. Unless your significant other enters the bed from a 10-meter diving platform, I don’t think you’ll feel a thing.
I used a seismograph app to pick up any motion disturbances, and during normal tossing and turning it registered next to nothing. At one point, I pushed down very hard and saw a small spike, but most people will never have to worry about that. Giving this mattress a 5 out of 5 on motion isolation was a no-brainer.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
3.5/5
The Bear Pro Hybrid uses cooling gel memory foam that draws heat away from your body. It also has a breathable cover and innerspring coils that allow heat to escape.
When I used a temperature gun to take three readings, the bed’s temperature, which started at 71.7 degrees, went up 9 degrees after I had been on it for five minutes but then came down a couple of degrees after 10 minutes. I was happy to see the decrease in temperature but hoped to see a little more overall temperature regulation from this bed, which is why it got a 3.5 here.
However, Bear does offer a Celliant Pillow Top Cover that may help regulate body temperature for an additional cost.
Bounce
4/5
Like a magician, the Bear Pro Hybrid had some surprises in store for me. I was not expecting a bed with foam and excellent motion isolation to bring the bounce as well as it did. I tested the bounce and responsiveness by jumping on the bed and dropping a 10-pound ball on it. Although neither my head nor the ball left a dent in the ceiling, you won’t feel stuck in the mattress because the Bear Pro Hybrid quickly returns to its original shape when pressure is applied. These factors helped this bed earn a 4 out of 5 in bounce.
Edge Support
4/5
If you and your partner like to use the whole surface of the bed or if, like me, you end up hugging the perimeter of your mattress, you’ll want a bed with good edge support. This feature can also help those with mobility issues get in and out of bed more easily and confidently.
With durable foam and an innerspring base, the Bear Pro Hybrid offers a lot of edge support. I noticed a slight sink when I sat on the edge, but I tested this feature by bending over and tying my shoe for a minute, and I felt very secure. I followed that up by lying down as close to the edge as I could get for a minute and didn’t fear sinking too low or falling out of the bed.
I deducted a point for the sinkage, but I still think this bed offers great edge support.
Accessibility
4.5/5
Accessibility scores are based on the “extras” the individual mattress and the company bring to the consumer. Bear and their Pro Hybrid mattress do an excellent job of accessibility by offering free delivery (white glove delivery is available for an extra charge), interest-free financing, and a lifetime warranty.
They are also CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold certified and use a fiberglass-free fire barrier. If you want to go check out a Bear Pro Hybrid in person before you buy it, Bear has showrooms across the U.S.
I also appreciated that it had four attached handles, making moving it easier than mattresses without this feature. I deducted half a point because of its slightly lower-than-average sleep trial and the fact that the cooling Celliant cover costs an additional amount.
Customer Service
4/5
How communicative and efficient a customer service rep is can sometimes make or break a customer’s buying decision. We score this on the different avenues the company provides for reaching them, how quickly questions are answered, and how friendly and knowledgeable the staff member is. Y
You can reach Bear by email, text, or phone. I like that there are different options to contact them, but I deducted a point for the time it took an agent to respond to my chat inquiry (almost 10 minutes). Also, I appreciated the text option, but once you sign up for it, you will get texts from Bear fairly often.
Performance for Couples
4/5
Unlike deciding where to go for dinner, couples shouldn’t have a hard time agreeing on the Bear Pro Hybrid. It offers great motion isolation for those with restless partners or light sleepers. The edge support allows couples to stretch out by using the entire surface of the mattress, and the responsiveness will help sexually active couples avoid getting awkwardly stuck when repositioning. I subtracted a point because the firmness may not be universally appealing.
Preference-Based Features
Quilted Breathable Cover
The mattress’s breathable quilted cover is designed with Sleep Recovery Technology™.
Designed for Athletes
Athletes and others who are physically active may benefit from the optional Celliant pillow top cover that’s reportedly able to help with both cooling and recovery. That said, there is no conclusive evidence yet of Celliant’s effectiveness, which is why it might be worth utilizing that sleep trial to see if you see positive results.

Construction: What’s Inside the Bear Pro Hybrid?
The Bear Pro Hybrid balance is made with two layers of foam and a base of individually encased coils. The mattress has a height of 10 inches and is made of the following layers:
- The breathable quilt cover comes standard with this mattress and helps keep sleepers cool. However, for an additional fee, you can get a special pillow top cover, which features Sleep Recovery Technology™ that is powered by Celliant. According to Bear, Celliant can help promote cooling and recovery, but Celliant’s effectiveness is still being researched.
- The next layer is made up of 2 inches of cooling gel memory foam that draws away body heat to help keep sleepers cool and comfortable. This layer also encourages spinal alignment which helps you wake free from neck, back, and hip pain.
- Bear Dynamic Foam can be found directly under the first layer. This 2-inch thick layer allows you to sink in for deeper compression which should provide pressure relief. It also serves as a transition to the base.
- The base layer is made of 6 inches of individual and fully-encased coils with perimeter edge support. This layer provides targeted support, reactivity to movement, and motion isolation.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Bear Pro Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box and it will arrive at your doorstep rolled and compressed into a box. After bringing the box to the room where you plan to use the mattress, carefully remove the mattress from the box and carefully cut away the plastic. The bed will start to inflate at the time and should reach its full size within a few hours. It can take up to 24-48 hours for the mattress to reach full firmness. The mattress may have a slight chemical smell, but it should dissipate fairly quickly.
Certifications
- GREENGUARD Gold – This certification reflects the product’s ability to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards, and its eco-INSTITUT® certification, completed by a lab in Germany with 30 years’ experience in the mattress industry, signifies that the company has gone above and beyond to ensure levels of hazardous chemicals are well-below safety regulation requirements.
- CertiPUR-US® – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

My Verdict of the Bear Pro Hybrid
You shouldn’t judge a book or in the case of the Bear Pro Hybrid, a mattress, by its cover. This mattress looks fairly simple, but it’s hiding a supportive, cozy bed underneath.
The combination of firmer memory foam and individually wrapped coils kept my spine fantastically aligned. I was a big fan of how it filled in the gap around my lower back and kept my hips elevated.
It should be a great bed for couples because it has motion isolation and bounce. The biggest drawback of this mattress is that it’s not particularly cool, and you have to pay extra for a cooling cover. After looking at all the individual scores, I give the Bear Pro Hybrid a 4.4 out of 5 overall.
