When Goldilocks settled on her “just right” bed, I think it may have been the Bear Elite Hybrid. Bear’s most luxurious model combines copper-infused memory foam and individually wrapped coils to provide a lush and sturdy feel.
Although constructed like a high-end mattress, the Bear Elite Hybrid is reasonably priced compared to similar-quality beds. It is also a versatile choice, available in three firmness levels. I tested the medium firmness level for this review.

Who I Recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid For:
- Average-weight back sleepers – Julia Forbes, one of our average-weight testers, loved this mattress for back sleepers. “It is buoyant and cloudlike,” she said.
- Couples – The Bear Elite Hybrid outperforms many of its competitors in areas of particular interest to couples, including bounce, cooling, and edge support.
- Those who want a responsive bed – If you’re looking for a bouncy bed, the Bear Elite Hybrid has you covered. Its excellent responsiveness makes it a breeze to move around on.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid For:
- Side sleepers – Bear touts the Elite Hybrid as great for side sleepers, but we will have to agree to disagree with them on that point. Although we thoroughly enjoyed this bed on our backs and stomachs, some of us on the testing team felt pressure buildup when we were on our sides. Find more suitable mattresses for side sleepers here.
- Those needing an easy-to-move mattress – The Bear Elite Hybrid is a solidly built mattress, with a queen size weighing around 110 pounds and a king coming in around 140. It also doesn’t have handles, making it more difficult to move – especially without help.
Customer Reviews of the Bear Elite Hybrid
According to the Bear website, the Elite Hybrid has more than 3,750 reviews and has garnered 4.6 out of 5 stars. Many of the customer reviews praise the bed’s versatility and support. However, some customers were disappointed with how firm the medium-firm option felt.
Testing the Bear Elite Hybrid
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
For this review, I tested the Bear Elite Hybrid Medium model. I used testing instruments such as pressure relief maps, a seismograph app, and a temperature gun to bring you data-driven results. Also, since I am a lightweight person, and considering how a mattress feels directly correlates with your weight, I brought in fellow product testers Julia Forbes and Spencer Bland to give their thoughts on how this bed performs for average-weight and heavyweight folks, respectively. We were also joined by another colleague Sosha Lewis, who also helped us evaluate the bed for pressure relief.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10
The Bear Elite Hybrid is available in Soft, Medium, and Firm, giving you three firmness options. This versatility helps shoppers find an Elite Hybrid bed that will work best for their body type and preferred sleep position.
I gave it a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making the Bear Elite Hybrid an appealing, true, medium-firm bed. However, remember that firmness is subjective, and it may feel slightly less or more firm to you.
I’ve also created the chart below to help you match your sleeping position to the ideal Bear Elite Hybrid firmness option.
SLEEPING POSITION | BEST BEAR ELITE HYBRID FIRMNESS OPTION |
Side Sleeper | Soft or Medium |
Back Sleeper | Medium |
Stomach Sleeper | Medium or Firm |
Combination Sleeper | Luxury Firm |
How Does the Bear Elite Hybrid Feel?
Julia said that the Bear Elite Hybrid felt “buoyant and cloudlike,” and I think that nails the overall feel of this bed. The individually wrapped coils of the base and the foam upper layers give this bed tremendous responsiveness so that you never feel stuck in it. Further, the hand-quilted cooling cover, the copper-infused gel foam, and the open structure of the innerspring provide the Bear Elite Hybrid with a consistently cool feeling.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Bear, their Elite Hybrid mattress has no weight limitations.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | I felt a decent bit of pressure builup around my shoulders when I tested this mattress on my side, and the pressure map reading confirmed how I felt. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Although Julia didn’t find this position uncomfortable, she noticed some pressure around her shoulders. Julia thinks this may be an issue if you have pre-existing shoulder pain. However, she felt the bed provided the right cushioning for her hips. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Spencer reported that his hips sank into the Bear Elite Hybrid a little, but he didn’t find it concerning. This mattress could be a good choice for heavyweight side sleepers who tend to push down into the layers more. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | My body was fully supported, but there was also ample cushioning. What impressed me the most was that there were no gaps between the mattress and my lower back, which is rare for me. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Julia stated that she was entirely aloft, other than a tiny amount of sink around her hips, when on her back. She loved this bed for average-weight back sleepers and said that she felt like she was floating on a cloud. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Our heavyweight tester, Spencer, stated that he thought the Bear Elite Hybrid did an excellent job supporting him, particularly around his lower back. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | I was pain-free when I tested this mattress on my stomach. It provided me with great support and lift. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | “I thought the lift for my lower back was great, and I appreciated the cushioning around my hips and chest,” Julia said. Because of the balance of soft cushioning and sturdy support, this mattress could be a great choice for average-weight stomach sleepers with back pain. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Spencer stated that the Bear Elite Hybrid felt “very good” when he was on his stomach. He noted that his spine was aligned entirely, and he enjoyed the cushioning around his hips. |
Pressure Relief
4.5/5
To test this, we use a pressure map that we place on top of a mattress. Red and yellow mean there’s more pressure, whereas blue and green mean little to no pressure.
Our teammate, Sosha, tested the Bear Elite Hybrid for pressure relief. She gave it a score of 4.5 out of 5, which is nearly perfect. According to Sosha, the bed molded around her lower back and started melting tension away instantly.
Lying on her side, Sosha noticed a little bit of sinking, and if you look at the pressure map reading, you can see a little bit of yellow around her hips. “It wasn’t uncomfortable”, Sosha says. “But it might not be the best for people with hip pain or heavyweight sleepers.” For this reason, we took off a half-point.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid Good for Pain Relief?
On the Medium I tested, I’d say this mattress should do an excellent job of relieving pain for many sleepers, thanks to its combination of soft foam layers and a sturdy coil base. Additionally, with the Bear Elite Hybrid, folks can choose between three firmness levels, allowing them to hone in on a mattress that addresses their specific areas of pain.
Back Pain | I think that the Bear Elite Hybrid is an exceptional choice for people with back pain. It has plenty of cushioning that provides pressure relief and a sturdy coil base to help keep your spine aligned and your body supported. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | Julia and Spencer noted that their hips slightly sank when they tested this hybrid mattress. Although neither was bothered by this, it gives me pause when recommending this to average-weight and heavyweight sleepers with hip pain. On top of that, Sosha also noticed some pressure in the hips when lying on her side. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | People with shoulder pain will likely want to avoid the Medium model of this mattress. Although the foam layers offer cushioning, it may not be enough around the shoulders. If you weigh less than 250 pounds and have shoulder pain, there may be better options for you. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
It may be called Bear, but this bed is a top dog for support. The foam upper layers and a base of individually wrapped coils provide nearly perfect spinal support for all body types. Further, the additional lumbar support created by the high-gauge coils in the center of the bed prevents most sinking and sagging. And, thanks to the foam’s cushioning, you don’t feel the coils at all. If support is one of your top mattress priorities, I recommend trying the solidly built and comfortable Bear Elite Hybrid.
Motion Isolation
3.5/5
Sleeping with a partner or pet who tosses and turns all night can ruin your rest. Mattresses with superior motion isolation keep their movements contained to their side of the bed. The Bear Elite Hybrid does an above-average job at isolating motion, but it is not among the best in class.
We used a seismograph app to test this category and record disturbances as we flipped and flopped on the bed. The upper foam layers absorbed our motion well, but I still detected some movement.
This bed will be fine for all but light sleepers or those who sleep with particularly restless partners, and that is why I gave it a 3.5 for motion isolation.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4.5/5
If, like Julia, you overheat throughout the night, you understand the importance of a mattress that can help keep you cool. The Bear Elite Hybrid is here to help with your temperature-regulating needs. I used a temperature gun to record an initial surface temperature of 65.1 degrees. After lying on the Elite Hybrid for five minutes, I retook the surface temperature, which was 71.5. I then repeated this process for a final temperature of 75.9, showing that this bed only went up about 10 degrees.
This indicates that the cooling cover and copper-infused foam draw heat away from the top of the bed while the coils allow air to flow freely. The Bear Elite Hybrid’s cooling capabilities and breathability earned it 4.5 in temperature regulation.
Bounce
4/5
I caught so much air jumping on this bed I thought I was Lebron James. The Bear Elite Hybrid has major bounce and responsiveness due to the targeted coils. The construction makes this bed exceptionally easy to move around on. Combination sleepers, sexually active couples, and those with mobility issues should appreciate how easy it is to reposition on this mattress. You shouldn’t feel like you’re getting sucked into the Elite Hybrid.
In addition to my jumping, we dropped a lacrosse ball and a weighted medicine ball to gauge how quickly the bed regained its original shape after the weight of the balls was applied and released. This bed received 5s from all of our judges.
Edge Support
4/5
To test for how well folks are supported along the perimeter of this bed, Julia, Spencer, and I sat on the edge, tying our shoes for a minute, and then we lied on the edge for a minute to gauge how far we sank or slipped. Julia and I experienced very little sinking. It was easy for us to stand up after tying our shoes, which is beneficial for those with mobility issues.
Also, couples who like to utilize the entire surface of the bed should be happy to hear that we felt secure when lying towards the outside of the bed. Although Spencer noticed a little more sinkage than we did, it was still above average. Therefore, I gave this bed a 4 out of 5 for its edge support performance.
Accessibility
4/5
In addition to how the bed performs, I checked out how this brand and mattress sets themselves apart from competitors. The Bear Elite Hybrid brings extras to the table regarding pain relief, firmness options, and a lifetime warranty. Shoppers will also receive free shipping and returns on their GREENGUARD Gold Certified mattress. I also gave Bear high marks for having an accessibility menu with options that allow for screen reading, bigger text, smart contrast, and a dyslexia-friendly setting, amongst others.
I deducted a point because it is a heavy mattress without built-in handles. This could make it difficult to move, especially if you live alone.
Customer Service
4/5
The customer service I received on the phone with Bear was top-notch. The representative was friendly and knowledgeable. However, the online chat was a little more frustrating. It is driven by a bot that is pretty easily stumped. You can also submit a request via email, but I would have liked to see a chat that humans answered. Although most reviews praised Bear’s customer service, a few stated that they had difficulty getting a follow-up email or call.
Performance for Couples
4/5
Those who sleep with a partner should feel at ease about the Bear Elite Hybrid. It scores highly in bounce, versatility, cooling, support, and edge support. The buoyancy of this bed should make it easy for sexually active couples to reposition easily, while the exceptional cooling features should help keep you cool.
Furthermore, the firmness options should help couples choose a bed that works best for both of them, and partners will likely feel supported when sleeping on this bed.
I deducted a point due to the motion isolation score. Although many sleepers should sleep well on this bed with their partner, those who are light sleepers may not.
Preference-Based Features
Multiple Firmness Options
By providing three firmness levels, Bear ensures this bed fits a range of sleepers with variable sleeping habits.
Advanced Lumbar Support
The Bear Elite Hybrid mattress has enhanced support in the center to better support the lower back area.
Adjustable Base Compatible
This bed works with an adjustable base, so it’s a good option if you want to customize your sleeping experience. In addition, the company sells adjustable bases that should be the best fit for this mattress.
Construction: What’s Inside the Bear Elite Hybrid?
The Bear Elite Hybrid is 14 inches tall, so it’s not the tallest or thinnest mattress out there. This makes it a good fit for most foundations and bedrooms, as it doesn’t look too bulky. The first layer is a hand-quilted cooling cover designed to keep you cool and aid pressure relief.
- Below the hand-quilted top is a layer of copper-infused memory foam that has antimicrobial properties and helps with cooling. The memory foam allows a bit of cradling to help with pressure relief without letting your heaviest parts sink in.
- Next is the Dynamic Transition Foam, which contours and supports the body while also providing a gentle transition to the coils. This layer ensures you get the best of the coil unit without bottoming out.
- The coil unit features individually encased coils that move separately, which allows them to better adapt to your body. The higher-gauge coils in the center of the bed provide excellent lumbar support while aiding in motion isolation. The edges are also reinforced with higher-gauge coils.
- The base is made from high-density foam and serves as a solid foundation for the upper layers. This layer supports all the others while also enhancing the bed’s durability.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Bear Elite Hybrid comes rolled and packed in a box. This way, it’s easier to handle and carry from your doorstep to the bedroom.
Before unpacking, bring it to your foundation of choice, where it can unroll and decompress. Once you remove the packaging, the mattress will decompress on its own. This can last 24 to 48 hours, depending on how long it was in the box.
When it comes to off-gassing, you may notice a slight chemical smell when first opening the package. If you do, simply let it rest in a ventilated room, and any off-gassing should dissipate by the time the mattress fully decompresses.
Certifications
- GREENGUARD Gold – This product has a GREENGUARD Gold certification that reflects the product’s ability to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards.
- CertiPUR-US® – In addition, the foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Bear Elite Hybrid FAQs
Does the Bear Elite Hybrid need a box spring?
Bear does not recommend using a traditional coil box spring with their mattresses. Rather, they encourage you to place your bed on a platform, foundation, or adjustable base.
Is the Bear Elite Hybrid good for side sleepers?
Although Bear states that the Bear Elite Hybrid is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers, we didn’t find that to be the case. We thought this mattress performed exceptionally well for back and stomach sleepers, but that there was too much pressure buildup when it comes to side sleepers.
Is the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress good for back pain?
The Bear Elite Hybrid could be an excellent mattress for people struggling with back pain, as it has reinforced center support. This helps add more support to the lumbar area and keeps the spine neutral by preventing the hips from sinking in too much, especially if you sleep on your back.
How long do Bear mattresses last?
Bear mattresses are designed to last eight to 10 years with proper use and care. This means you shouldn’t jump on the bed. In addition, you may want to rotate it from time to time to ensure an even wear.
What is the weight limit for a Bear Elite Hybrid mattress?
The Bear Elite Hybrid mattress doesn’t have an official weight limit. This makes it a good option for most people, regardless of whether they’re single or sharing their bed.

My Verdict of the Bear Elite Hybrid
The Bear Elite Hybrid is a top-notch bed that should offer support, spinal alignment, and contouring to many sleepers. My fellow testers and I were big fans of many aspects of this bed including its cooling and bounce. We agreed that this would make an excellent mattress for couples. However, if you are an extremely light sleeper or your partner is exceptionally restless, this bed may not isolate motion as much as you need.
I also like that although it looks like a luxury mattress and it is built like a luxury mattress, the Elite Hybrid runs less than other beds in this category. Overall, this mattress earned a score of 4.3 out of 5.
