If the first thing you say when you lie down on a mattress is usually, “Yes, but it’s just not firm enough,” the Amerisleep AS1 may be the bed for you. It is the firmest of all Amerisleep’s models and also one of the lowest priced.
Since it’s so firm, it will work for some people and sleeping positions better than others. In order to find out who this is the perfect bed for, we looked at several key components of the AS1. Keep reading this in-depth review of Amerisleep’s AS1 to find out if this is the firm mattress of your dreams.

Who We Recommend The AS1 For:
- Those who love a firm mattress – This bed has a thin layer of soft memory foam on top, but most of its firmness comes from the dense poly foam beneath. In other words, this is a very firm mattress.
- Back and stomach sleepers – Since the AS1 is so firm, we recommend it only for back and stomach sleepers. The dense poly foam will be supportive enough to keep the hips elevated and the back in alignment in these two positions.
- Hot sleepers – Unlike many all-foam mattresses that trap heat, the AS1 uses a cooling cover and a specific memory foam that helps draw heat away from the body.
Who We Don’t Recommend The AS1 For:
- Those who prefer soft beds – If you prefer a soft or even medium-feeling bed, this won’t be a good choice for you. Instead, try one of our favorite soft mattresses.
- Side sleepers – Side sleepers need far more cushioning for their shoulder and hip than this firm mattress will provide. Instead, we recommend one of these mattresses for side sleepers.
- Those who prefer some bounce – If you’re used to the feeling of an innerspring mattress with a bit of bounce, you might not like this all-foam mattress, which feels denser and has zero spring.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 8/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
According to our Sleep Advisor Firmness Scale, where 1 is soft as a cotton ball and 10 is as hard as a wood floor, the Amerisleep AS1 is an 8. This makes it a firm mattress – noticeably firmer than the average mattress, which would rate closer to a 5 or 6.
This firmer feel is because the top layer of memory foam is quite thin, and the bulk of the mattress is made from a dense poly foam. This will work well for those who love a very firm mattress but will be uncomfortable for those who want something softer or who sleep on their sides.
How Does It Feel?
When you first press into the AS1, you’ll likely notice the soft, cushioning memory foam top layer. This is made to contour the body and should provide at least some pressure relief. That said, this layer is only 2 inches thick, and the rest of the 8 inches of the mattress are made up of a high-density, firm poly foam.
You’ll quickly sink down into this poly foam layer, which gives the mattress that firm feeling.
What We Like About the AS1
- It works for stomach sleepers – It can be hard to find a mattress that is firm and supportive enough for stomach sleepers. This one fits the bill.
- It works for heavyweight sleepers – Likewise, it can be hard to find a mattress that’s firm and supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers. This one should work for most heavyweight back and stomach sleepers.
- It isolates motion well – This is good news for couples who share a bed and don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements.
Our AS1 Complaints
- It doesn’t work for side sleepers – Side sleepers of any body weight will likely find this mattress too firm for this position.
- It’s not good for joint pain – For those with aching joints, this AS1 likely won’t provide enough cushioning or pressure relief.
- It doesn’t ship to Hawaii or Alaska – Many mattress companies offer shipping to Hawaii and Alaska for an extra charge, but Amerisleep does not ship to these states.
Testing the Amerisleep AS1 Mattress: How it Performed
In order to find out who this mattress would be best suited for, we lied down on it in different positions. We also looked at key factors like how well it isolated motion, its performance for couples, how well it regulated temperature, and its ability to provide support and relieve pressure.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Amerisleep, the AS1 is able to comfortably support up to 400 pounds on each side of the mattress. That said, it’s important to take not just your weight into consideration, but also your go-to sleep position when buying a new mattress.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers will find this mattress far too firm for this sleep position.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers will also not receive enough pressure relief on the shoulder and hip in this position.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Again, heavyweight side sleepers won’t get enough pressure relief or cushion from this firm bed.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers who love a firm-feeling bed will be a great match for the AS1. They’ll get all the support they need, as well as some pressure relief.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers will feel well-supported on this bed, with their spine kept in a comfortable, neutral alignment and their weight distributed evenly.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers should also do well on the AS1 since it is firm enough to keep the hips elevated in this position, which ultimately leads to less back pain.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should feel comfortable and well-supported on the AS1.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Average-weight stomach sleepers will notice that this mattress keeps their hips elevated, which is a good thing for relieving lower back pain.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – It’s rare to find a foam mattress that is supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers. This one actually does the job for many people, though a hybrid mattress might feel even more supportive for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Pressure Relief & Pain
Oftentimes, mattresses that are extremely firm don’t perform all that well when it comes to pressure relief, especially when lying on the side. The Amerisleep AS1 is a firm bed, so it was no real surprise that it created, rather than relieved, pressure in this posture. That said, we found it did a great job relieving pressure and pain while lying on the back and stomach.
Back Pain – The AS1 should do a great job relieving back pain when lying on your back or stomach. This is because it is firm enough to keep the lower back from curving, which is what usually causes back pain in the first place.
Hip Pain – If you turn over onto your side, though, the AS1 will feel too firm for those with hip pain. Side sleepers with hip pain will want a mattress that is far more cushioning and contouring than this one. That said, the AS1 does a great job with hip pain for back and stomach sleepers, as it keeps the hips well elevated in this position.
Shoulder Pain – Shoulder pain can be exacerbated by side-sleeping on a too-firm mattress like the AS1. Instead, we’d recommend a mattress that is soft to medium-firm for those with shoulder pain. The AS5 mattress would be a great option.
Support
Support describes how well a mattress can keep your spine neutral throughout the night. The AS1 does a great job in this department, overall. For light to heavyweight people, the spine remains comfortable and straight while sleeping on the back or stomach, and their weight should feel supported and evenly distributed. This is especially impressive considering the AS1 is an all-foam bed, and all-foam beds can be less supportive than those with coils.
That said, some very heavyweight sleepers might opt for a mattress that also includes coils for extra support.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is an important factor for couples who share a bed. It describes the amount of movement you’ll be able to feel on your side of the bed when your partner moves on theirs. Generally speaking, mattresses made entirely of foam are better at isolating motion than those that include coils, which are springy.
Since the AS1 is made entirely of foam, it does an excellent job isolating motion. You shouldn’t notice your partner moving through the night.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
Memory foam has a reputation for trapping heat. While the AS1 sleeps hotter than something like a hybrid or innerspring mattress, it does have some added cooling features to help mitigate the memory foam’s heat.
It uses an open-cell structure foam, which allows more air to pass through the mattress. It also comes with the Refresh Cooling Cover, which is breathable and wicks away moisture.
Performance for Couples
The AS1 is a great bed for couples who specifically love a firm mattress. It has great motion isolation, which means you won’t wake up your partner when changing positions at night. It also has good edge support, so you and your partner will be able to comfortably use the entire surface of the bed. Plus, it is more cooling than other memory foam mattresses due to its open-cell construction and cooling cover.
However, it doesn’t have any bounce which can be a drawback for some sexually-active couples, and the firm feel won’t work well if either partner is a side sleeper.

Preference-based Features
Bed-in-a-box
The Amerisleeps AS1 is a bed-in-a-box, meaning it will be delivered to your door, compressed in a box. This is a convenient option for many who want to easily set up their bed on their own time.
Great Edge Support
Many mattresses made entirely of foam tend to sag at the edges. Since the AS1 is so firm, it remains strong and solid beneath your weight, even out to the edges of the bed. This edge support makes it so you can comfortably use the entire surface of the bed.
Adjustable Base Compatible
The Amerisleep AS1 is compatible with mattress foundations, platform beds, and adjustable bases.
Construction: What’s Inside the Amerisleep AS1?
The AS1 will arrive at your door, compressed in a box. It will take some time to fully decompress after you’ve unboxed it, and when it does, it will measure 10 inches tall. If it isn’t 10 inches tall, it is not done decompressing and you should give it some more time.
This mattress is made entirely of foam, and it has a relatively simple construction, which includes just two layers of foam that are wrapped in a soft, cooling cover.
- The cover of the AS1 is called the “Refresh Cool Cover” for good reason. It was designed to help wick away moisture and heat. According to Amerisleep, the fabric in the cover uses minerals to help promote daily performance and energy.
- The top comfort layer consists of 2 inches of Bio-Pur foam. This Bio-Pur foam is memory foam but with an open-cell structure to help keep you cool at night. This layer should provide some contouring and pressure relief. It feels squishy and sinks down under pressure, but since it is only 2 inches thick, you should never feel ‘stuck’ in the bed.
- The base layer consists of 8 inches of high-density poly foam. This Bio-Core foam base is what provides the shape and structure for the bed. It is also what gives the mattress its overall firm feel.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Unboxing the AS1 is a simple process: just take the box into the room where you want to set up your bed, open the box, remove the mattress, and roll it out onto your bed frame. You’ll then remove the packaging. This should take about 10 or 15 minutes.
After that, your AS1 will start to inflate. Remember, it isn’t fully inflated until it reaches its full height of 10 inches. During this process, there will also be a slight chemical smell. This is perfectly normal for mattresses containing foam, and this off-gassing smell should dissipate within 24 to 48 hours.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® certified – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping
- Shipping – Shipping is free within the contiguous United States. Amerisleep doesn’t ship to Hawaii or Alaska.
- Trial – You can try out the Amerisleep AS1 for 100 nights to make sure it’s the mattress of your dreams.
- Warranty – There is a warranty on this mattress for 20 years.
- Return Policy – If you don’t love your AS1, you can return it for a full refund before your 100-night sleep trial is over. Amerisleep does require that you try your mattress out for a minimum of 30 days before initiating the return, though. Returns initiated before 30 days will be subject to a 99-dollar early process fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Amerisleep mattresses have fiberglass?
Amerisleep mattresses are produced without fiberglass and are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they are free of harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates.
Do Amerisleep mattresses sleep hot?
Even though Amerisleep mattresses contain memory foam, they don’t sleep as hot as some other memory foam beds. This is because they use an open-cell structure with their memory foam, which makes it more breathable.

Can I put the Amerisleep AS1 on a box spring?
Amerisleep recommends using a mattress foundation, platform bed, or adjustable base frame rather than a box spring, which is better suited for an innerspring mattress.

Overall Summary
Amerisleep’s AS1 is an excellent and affordable all-foam option for those who love a firm-feeling mattress.
Side Sleepers
1/5
Side sleepers need a mattress that is relatively soft and contouring in order to cradle the hip and shoulder and relieve pressure in these areas. Since the AS1 is the firmest option from Amerisleep, we don’t recommend this one for side sleepers.
Back Sleepers
5/5
For those who prefer a firm mattress, the AS1 is ideal for back sleepers. It should evenly distribute your weight in this position and create optimal, neutral spinal alignment as well. Back sleepers of any body shape and size should feel well supported on the AS1.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
It can be difficult to find a mattress firm and supportive enough for stomach sleepers. In this position, the hips tend to dip down into a mattress that is too soft, which creates back pain. The AS1 is firm enough for most body types in this position. Very heavy sleepers might need a little more support though.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
Those who switch between back and stomach sleeping should be happy with the AS1. However, for those combination sleepers that also lie on their sides at night, the AS1 will be too firm. Instead, we’d recommend a medium-firm mattress with a bit of bounce for these combination sleepers.
Couples
4/5
Couples who prefer a firm, all-foam mattress should love the AS1. It has great motion isolation, meaning you won’t be able to feel your partner move at night. It also has good temperature regulation, and the edges don’t tend to sag, so the entire bed’s surface is usable. However, if either partner is a side sleeper, you’ll want something else.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds should feel pretty supported on this bed, especially considering it is an all-foam mattress. Heavyweight back sleepers will feel supported the most, with their weight evenly distributed. While some heavyweight stomach sleepers will feel supported here, others may want to look into a more supportive hybrid or innerspring bed.
Lightweight Sleepers
4/5
Lighter-than-average sleepers will definitely feel supported on this bed, but may not feel as comfortable, since lightweight sleepers tend to feel a mattress as even more firm than others do. Stomach and back sleepers under 130 pounds who love a firm mattress, though, should enjoy the AS1.
Average Weight Sleepers
4/5
Average-weight sleepers who prefer an all-foam and firm mattress are a great fit for the AS1. Average-weight sleepers will sink into the memory foam layer just enough to feel some pressure relief but also feel supported by the dense foam beneath. This is a great bed for average-weight back and stomach sleepers.
Overall Value
4/5
The AS1 is one of the more affordable options from Amerisleep and certainly one of the best-priced firm, all-foam mattresses of this quality. Additionally, the AS1 comes with a 20-year warranty, which will easily cover the entire lifetime of the mattress. Overall, you’ll be getting a great product for the price.
Our Verdict
Amerisleep is well known for its high-quality and more eco-friendly mattresses, which use Bio-Pur foam made with renewable plant-based oils. Of all their mattresses, the AS1 is the firmest option available.
The AS1’s firm feel is not going to be for everyone, though, such as side sleepers, who will want something softer and more cushioning. The good news is that Amerisleep has softer models available that are more accommodating for side sleepers. However, if you love a firm bed and sleep on your back or stomach, the AS1 could be a great option for you.
