Who I Recommend the Helix Plus Luxe For:
- Heavyweight sleepers – The Helix Plus Luxe is designed for heavyweight sleepers. It’s firm enough to support heavier folks without sinking or discomfort.
- Any sleeping position – This medium-firm mattress is compatible with side, stomach, back, and combination sleepers, which is not an easy feat for a mattress. I was pleasantly surprised that I felt spinal support and pressure relief when testing each sleeping position.
- Hybrid mattress fans – If you enjoy the soft feel of being enveloped by a foam mattress, but are still looking for the responsiveness of an innerspring bed, the Helix Plus Luxe is calling your name. This hybrid mattress gives you the best of both worlds; equal parts bounce and cocooning.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Helix Plus Luxe For:
- Light sleepers – If you’re someone who wakes easily, I don’t recommend the Helix Plus Luxe mattress. The bed doesn’t have great motion isolation, meaning you’ll feel a lot of movement from a co-sleeper if they move around, which could wake you up during the night. Instead of the Helix Plus Luxe, I suggest you check out our best mattresses for couples, which include beds with better motion isolation.
- Hot sleepers – I don’t love the Helix Plus Luxe’s temperature regulation, especially for hot sleepers. I do think it would be better if you purchase the cooling cover, but if you sleep hot, live in a warm climate, or share a bed with a partner, you still might want a cooler bed.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Plus Luxe Mattress
With 25 reviews, customers rate the Helix Plus Luxe mattress 3.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. One criticism of customers was that they expected the mattress to feel firmer for heavyweight sleepers, while other customers applauded the Helix Plus Luxe for being the perfect bed compared to others they had tried.
Testing the Helix Plus Luxe
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
I tested the Helix Plus Luxe mattress in all sorts of ways, whether I was ripping open the side of the bed to view its construction, using a seismograph to test motion isolation, checking the bed’s cooling qualities with a temperature gun, or dropping a lacrosse ball on the mattress to assess bounce.
Since I’m an average-weight sleeper and this is a bed for plus-size folks, I also made sure to get feedback from my colleague, who tested this bed as a heavyweight sleeper.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10
I rated the Helix Plus Luxe a 6 out of 10 for mattress firmness, which means it is a true medium-firm bed. Medium-firm mattresses accommodate the largest number of sleepers because they are smack dab in the middle; not too soft but not too firm.
How Does The Helix Plus Luxe Feel?
There’s no arguing that the Helix Plus Luxe has a thick, plush pillow top. I felt my weight being evenly distributed underneath, but I still sunk in a good two inches or so. There was a contouring feel around my body, but the mattress seemed firm enough that heavyweight sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Helix Plus Luxe is marketed for plus-size sleepers, however, the company does not specify a designated weight limit for the mattress.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight side sleepers should find the Helix Plus Luxe soft enough to contour to their hips and shoulders, while still supporting the spine. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | When lying on my side, I felt nice pressure relief for my joints making contact with the bed. My spine was held up and I was comfortable, with no tension buildup. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | My colleague, who is 270 pounds and nearly 7 feet tall liked the Helix Plus Luxe for side sleeping. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight sleepers often need a somewhat soft mattress to feel comfortable. This medium-firm mattress is a great choice for lightweight back sleepers since it’s not too firm. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | The Helix Plus Luxe definitely works here for average-weight back sleepers like myself. My weight was evenly distributed and my lumbar zone was held up. I have no complaints! |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | The other position my colleague liked on this bed was back sleeping, so heavyweight back sleepers should find a good match here. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | I think lightweight stomach sleepers will have a similar outcome to mine as an average-weight person when sleeping on the Helix Plus Luxe; back and hip support combined with softness around the hips. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | A little bit shocking here, but even with a softer surface, I appreciated the spine alignment offered to stomach sleepers. The surface yielded a nice cushion for my hips and my spine alignment was held up. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | My colleague recommended the Helix Plus instead for this position since it’s a bit firmer and might provide better support to plus-size stomach sleepers. That said, some folks might want something even firmer than the Helix Plus, in which case I’d recommend taking a look at our favorite firm mattresses for more options. |
Pressure Relief
4/5
When lying on my side, stomach, and back on the Helix Plus Luxe, I felt great pressure relief on my joints. This bed’s multiple foam layers help it contour your body to alleviate pain or discomfort.
I scored the Helix Plus Luxe a 4 out of 5 on pressure relief because, as an average-weight sleeper, I am unsure if this mattress would provide sufficient pressure relief for heavier individuals.

Is the Helix Plus Luxe Good for Pain Relief?
Yes, in general, I’d say the Helix Plus Luxe is a solid pick for those in need of pain relief.
Back Pain | If you experience back pain, I’d try the Helix Plus Luxe since it helps support the spine in all sleeping positions. Not only that but the mattress’s thick, plush pillow top and various foam layers should cradle your back and lumbar area. When purchasing the bed, you can also upgrade to the ErgoAlign layer which provides even more contouring and pain relief for the lumbar region. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | Medium-firm mattresses often do well for folks with hip pain because they strike a balance between whole-body stability and plushness around the hips. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | Similar to back and hip pain, I believe the Helix Plus Luxe will benefit people with shoulder pain. It’s medium-firm, each mattress layer is supportive, and the padded pillow top should help with shoulder tension and pain. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
The Helix Plus Luxe excels when it comes to support. The bed is made up of four unique dense foam layers, along with a thick layer of steel coils that reinforce the support provided by the foam.
I had zero issues with the Helix Plus Luxe’s ability to support me. My spine was straight in every sleep position, which is fantastic. My lumbar zone felt super supported without sinking issues, no matter the sleeping position, which is hard to come by in a mattress. This mattress earned an easy 5 out of 5 for support from me.
Motion Isolation
2/5
Strong motion isolation means you can’t feel movement on a mattress, particularly from a partner. Couples and people who wake easily are two groups who find motion isolation especially helpful.
I tested the Helix Plus Luxe’s motion isolation using a seismograph app to see how much motion was detected as I moved around on the mattress. As you can see on the seismograph reading above, a lot of movement was detected. Not only that, but I could feel the bed shaking as I moved around. The Helix Plus Luxe lacks motion isolation, which is why it only got a 2 out of 5.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
3/5
In all honesty, I wasn’t wowed by the Helix Plus Luxe when it came to temperature regulation; it was just okay. I used a temperature gun to test the bed’s ability to cool, recording the mattress’s temperature before I laid on it, and after lying on it for five and 10 minutes.
To start, the mattress was 68.8 degrees Fahrenheit, 82 degrees after five minutes, and 81.7 degrees after 10 minutes. Even though there was a slight temperature decrease over time, I don’t love that it skyrocketed from the initial temperature. This is why it got a 3 rating in this category.
You can purchase a cooling mattress cover for an additional price when buying the Helix Plus Luxe, so I would opt for that if you sleep hot.
Bounce
5/5
To test bounce, I dropped a lacrosse ball and weighted medicine ball on the Helix Plus Luxe and jumped on the bed.
If you couldn’t already tell by the photo of me jumping on it, this mattress is very bouncy, earning a score of 5 out of 5. If you need a stand-in for a trampoline, it would be hard to beat the Helix Plus Luxe.
A bouncy bed means it’s easier to reposition while on the bed, which is a pro for combination sleepers, people with limited mobility, or sexually active couples. The Helix Plus Luxe’s coils and various foam layers will essentially catapult you as you move around.
Edge Support
4/5
Edge support is how well a mattress holds you up when you’re sitting or lying on or near the edge of the bed. If you have trouble getting in and out of bed, or prefer sleeping on the edge of the bed, you’ll want to find a mattress with good edge support.
I tested this by sitting at the edge for a minute and then by lying at the edge for a minute. The Helix Plus Luxe earned a 4 out of 5 for its edge support because it’s solid overall. While I was sitting on the edge, it dipped down a bit more than I would have liked (I’m guessing it’s from the pillow top), but I was fully supported while lying down.
Accessibility
4.5/5
When rating the accessibility of a mattress, we consider how the product stands out. The Helix Plus Luxe is designed and marketed for plus-size people, and my colleague who tested it for this demographic found it comfortable for back and side sleeping, in particular, so I’d say it does deliver.
Also, while not specifically designed for people with limited mobility, I think the Helix Plus Luxe is accessible for these folks because of the bed’s great edge support and even better bounce, both of which lead to easier movement. The company also offers free returns, which is financially accessible.
However, new mattress set-up and old mattress removal come at an additional price. The Helix Plus Luxe also does not come with any other specifically accessible features like handles or multiple firmness options. For these reasons, I deducted half of a point here.
Customer Service
3.5/5
Helix has above-average customer service. Their mattresses are handmade in Arizona, demonstrating the care and consideration they put into their products. The company offers free shipping and returns in the contiguous United States. On Luxe items, such as the Helix Plus Luxe, the company provides a 15-year limited warranty, which is five years longer than the beds in their standard line. Company representatives are available online to answer questions via their website chat feature and by email, text, and phone calls.
Although Helix offers a 100-night sleep trial to test out your new mattress, other companies offer longer sleep trials, some up to around 365 nights. This shorter sleep trial may be a drawback for some. If you live in Canada, Hawaii, or Alaska, you’ll have to pay for mattress shipping, which is not ideal. Finally, Helix offers new mattress set-up and old mattress removal, but both come at an additional cost. For these reasons, I gave Helix’s customer service a score of 3.5 out of 5.
Performance for Couples
3.5/5
I gave the Helix Plus Luxe a 3.5 out of 5 rating for performance for couples because it excels in certain areas, yet falls short in others. That leads us right to support; the Helix Plus Luxe’s hybrid design provides fantastic support, which is especially important when two people share a bed. Also, this mattress has excellent bounce, which is often important for sexually active couples. Finally, I found the Helix Plus Luxe to have pretty good edge support, which is a pro for people who like to spread out to the edge of their bed, away from their partner.
Here’s where I see issues arising for some couples, though. This bed doesn’t have good motion isolation, meaning you’ll likely feel your partner’s movement throughout the night, potentially disrupting your sleep. Also, the mattress has mediocre temperature regulation, which isn’t great for couples either. When sleeping with another person, you tend to feel warmer, so if a couple does want to purchase the Helix Plus Luxe, I’d suggest upgrading to the GlacioTex cooling cover.
Preference-Based Features
Various Upgrades Available
When purchasing the Helix Plus Luxe, you can opt to pay for certain upgrades, such as the GlacioTex™ cooling cover or the ErgoAlign layer that provides additional contouring and pain relief. You can also purchase new mattress setup and old mattress removal.
Made in the USA
Helix mattresses are handmade in Arizona, so if you prefer a bed made in the United States, the Helix Plus Luxe is a great choice.
Adjustable Base Compatible
If you’re looking for a bed that can move up and down, the Helix Plus Luxe mattress is compatible with adjustable bases. You can pair it with a base you already own, or you can check out Helix’s adjustable base.
Construction: What’s Inside the Helix Plus Luxe?
The Helix Plus Luxe mattress is 13.5 inches tall and is topped with a TENCEL™ quilted cover. I found this pillow top to be extra cushioned compared to the Helix Plus mattress.
- Below the pillow top is a layer of Helix’s high-density responsive foam that cradles your body.
- Next, you’ll find Helix’s ultra-dense dynamic foam, which supports the body in all sleeping positions, preventing unwanted sinking.
- The third layer of foam is an ultra-dense dynamic foam that helps the mattress support sleepers of all body types.
- The innerspring unit consists of more than 1,000 TitanCore steel coils. These coils offer even more spine support, along with edge support, and temperature regulation.
- At the base of the bed, there is a DuraDense foam layer that assists with the mattress’s durability and stability.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Helix is a bed-in-a-box brand, so your Helix Plus Luxe will be delivered in a box at your doorstep. To unbox the mattress, you’ll take it out of the box, unroll it from the plastic wrapping, and cut off the remaining plastic. Helix suggests you give the mattress 30 to 45 minutes to fully expand before using the bed.
Like any bed-in-a-box, the Helix Plus Luxe will have a slight off-gassing scent when you first unbox it. Off-gassing is an unpleasant odor that the bed’s materials emit when you first remove the mattress from its packaging. However, it shouldn’t take long for the off-gassing scent to disappear, especially because this mattress is CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning it lacks certain harmful chemicals.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® – The Helix Plus Luxe’s foams are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
- GREENGUARD® Gold Certified – All Helix mattresses are GREENGUARD® Gold Certified, which means they produce low chemical emissions, reducing indoor air pollution and exposure to toxic chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, and formaldehyde.

My Verdict of the Helix Plus Luxe
After testing and reviewing the Helix Plus Luxe mattress, I was genuinely impressed. It’s difficult to find a bed that works well for different body types and sleeping positions. Obviously, not everyone will love this mattress, but it generally seems like a crowd-pleaser to me. The mattress offers excellent pressure relief and is extremely responsive and supportive.
This mattress does fall short in certain areas, like temperature regulation, motion isolation, and length of its sleep trial. Further, couples may not love the Helix Plus Luxe, depending on their specific preferences. Also, while it should work for many plus-size back and side sleepers, it might lack the firmness needed for stomach sleepers above 230 pounds.
Even with its faults, the Helix Plus Luxe is well worth a try. My final score for this mattress is 3.9 out of 5.
