We look at the mattress’s overall feel, along with other important performance categories such as motion isolation, edge support, pressure relief, cooling, and more.
In the case of floor mattresses, we also kept in mind that these mattresses are supposed to work without a foundation and used that to help us evaluate them for this specific purpose.

What We Look For in a Floor Mattress
Mattress Thickness
The minimum thickness we like to see for a floor mattress on this list is 9.5 inches, which is the case with the Tuft & Needle. The others are around 13 inches, which is even better to avoid being too close to the floor. The exception here is the Best Price Tri-Fold, which is only 4 inches thick, but it’s also geared more towards travel rather than everyday use.
Durability
A floor mattress should be as durable as every other mattress, if not more. For a floor mattress, we look at how well it would hold up when exposed to humidity and less airflow. We also look at the quality of the materials and stitching and whether we think they would stand the test of time. With this in mind, we like to see materials such as dense foam and coils to help with longevity.
Support
A supportive mattress will help promote a healthy spine alignment. Similar to durability, we like to see floor beds with dense foams and/or coils that will help keep the sleeper nicely supported. We also make sure it has at least a 4 out of 5 rating in this category.
