Our Nolah vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Bed Comparison Updated for 2024

This comparison between the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe and Nolah should help you decide between a hybrid created by a family-owned company that builds your new mattress just for you and an all-foam model provided by a company that puts pressure relief at the forefront of design. Are you looking for optimal cooling and superior edge support, or does incredible pressure relief and motion isolation pique your interest?

We tested each of these beds first-hand and are here to bring our thoughts on how they perform individually, as well as how they stack up against each other.

Quick Comparison: Nolah vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

Who I’d Recommend the Nolah For

  • Side sleepers – The Nolah was designed for side sleepers with its pressure-relieving foams, and it shows. “These foams really take the strain off my hips and shoulders when side sleeping. This will be a preferred position for many people,” said Sleep Advisor mattress tester Stuart.
  • Budget-conscious shoppers – The Nolah is cheaper than the Aurora Luxe in most sizes, which could appeal to those looking to spend a little less. However, you’re still getting a high-quality mattress with great pressure relief, as well as support and cooling features.
  • Those looking for a cooling all-foam bed – Foam is notorious for trapping heat, which can be a drawback of all-foam models. Thankfully, the Nolah combats this with a breathable cover and heat-wicking foams. We think this makes it feel cooler than your average all-foam bed.

Who I’d Recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe For

  • Extra-hot sleepers – The Aurora Luxe features a cool-to-the-touch GlacioTex™ heat-wicking cover, multiple layers of cooling foam, and a breathable coil unit. These features do an incredible job of cooling the bed. In fact, it sleeps so cold that Emma, a Sleep Advisor mattress tester, found herself feeling a little too chilly. This is fantastic for those who sleep hot or live in warmer climates.
  • Shoppers looking for bounce – The Aurora Luxe is incredibly bouncy thanks to its coil unit and hyper-elastic foams. These materials provide a super responsive feel that could appeal to combination sleepers who want to be able to move around easily, couples who like a bouncy mattress for sex, and people with mobility issues.
  • Couples – With its versatile medium-firm feel, bouncy surface, fantastic edge support, and incredible cooling, we think the Aurora Luxe is a great pick for couples.

Comparing Nolah vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe: Top Similarities

  • Not for heavyweight sleepers – Some heavier side sleepers may enjoy the feel of the Aurora Luxe, but in general, we wouldn’t recommend either bed for heavyweight sleepers. We don’t feel these mattresses will provide the required support to keep larger sleepers’ spines in a healthy position. Heavier sleepers could try the Firm option of the Aurora Luxe, though, or check out our picks of the best mattresses for heavy people.
  • Trial period – Both brands offer an industry-standard 120-night trial, which should be plenty of time to make up your mind.
  • Sinkage – We found ourselves supported in a gentle cradle on both beds. Additionally, we felt great support and pressure relief. However, those who love the deep hug of traditional memory foam may want to look elsewhere.

Comparing Nolah vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe: Key Differences

  • Firmness options – The Nolah comes in one firmness option, which is medium-plush, while the Aurora Luxe comes in three firmness options. With a choice of Soft, Medium, or Firm, there’s something for everyone with the Aurora Luxe.
  • Motion isolation – While the Aurora Luxe offers impressive motion isolation considering how bouncy it is, the Nolah wins in this department. We found next to no motion transfer on this bed, making it a great choice for sleepers who are sensitive to their partner’s movements.
  • Edge support – Hybrids tend to have better edge support than all-foam beds because coils simply do a better job than foam at keeping edges secure. With its reinforced coils around the perimeter, the Aurora Luxe does a fantastic job of providing edge support, which maximizes the surface area of the bed that you can comfortably sleep on.

Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel

Firmness

We rate mattress firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest. The Nolah scored 5, which is medium-plush. The Aurora Luxe comes in a choice of Soft, Medium, or Firm. We tested the more versatile Aurora Luxe Medium, which we ranked at 6.5, making it medium-firm.

We think the Nolah is ideal for side sleepers, though many back sleepers could also find it comfortable. The firmer feel of the Aurora Luxe should be a dream for back sleepers.

firmness scale 5 and 6.5

Support

The Nolah excels at relieving pressure but still offers great support for many sleepers thanks to its cradling AirFoam™. Our team thinks most light to average-weight back and side sleepers should feel well-supported on this bed.

The Aurora Luxe offers exceptional support as it has a coil unit. This could be appealing to light to average-weight stomach sleepers, average to heavyweight side sleepers, and most back sleepers.

Feel

Stuart loved the soft, plush feel of the Nolah’s cover. He also appreciated the incredible pressure relief offered by the AirFoam™, which the brand says is four times more pressure relieving than memory foam.

While reviewing the Aurora Luxe, Emma commented on how cool to the touch the GlacioTex™ cover felt. She also noted how it still felt cold as she sank into the layers in a gentle, contouring cradle.

Comparing Sinkage and Bounce

We experienced a gentle sinkage with the foams on both beds, although heavier sleepers may sink into a deeper hug on the all-foam Nolah. This can be particularly great for side sleepers.

When it comes to bounce, the Aurora Luxe hybrid wins, hands down. Another of our testers, Mark, loved how incredibly bouncy and responsive it is.

While there’s minimal bounce on the Nolah, we did find that its materials responded faster than traditional memory foam, so you shouldn’t find it difficult to move around on. However, couples who want a bouncier mattress for sex and those with mobility issues will likely prefer the much springier Aurora Luxe.

Comparing Motion Transfer

Despite its high bounce, the Aurora Luxe had surprisingly good motion isolation, thanks to its pocketed coils that help dampen motion transfer.

“With the individually wrapped coils and the memory foam transition layer, motion isolation is superior on this bed,” shared Emma. However, those who sleep light and share with a restless partner or pet may prefer the Nolah, which edges ahead in this department as all-foam mattresses tend to dampen movement better than beds with innerspring layers. “There’s almost no motion transfer at all in this bed; it’s super minimal,” Stuart added.

Comparing Cooling

Mark was a huge fan of the Aurora Luxe’s cooling technology, which includes a cooling cover, heat-wicking foams, and breathable coils. He even said it’s one of the best cooling mattresses he’s tested. “I really like that it has this cool cover that you can feel as soon as you touch it. Additionally, when you lay down on it, that heat-resistance transfers to your body.”

While the Nolah doesn’t sleep as cool as the Aurora Luxe, it still does a great job with its breathable cover and temperature-neutral AirFoam™. According to Nolah, their lab tests show that this foam dissipates heat 20 percent faster than memory foam.

Nolah Construction

The 10-inch Nolah Original features a breathable, snow-white cover with a diamond pattern. It’s made of Tencel™, which is derived from wood pulp and known for its moisture-wicking and cooling properties.

nolah original bed layers
  • The comfort layer has a 2-inch thick high-density Nolah AirFoam™ that offers gentle contouring and pressure relief. This material doesn’t let you sink too far into the mattress. The breathable foam contains microscopic air bubbles that help keep the layer cool and offer even weight distribution. According to Nolah, this foam is 300 percent more durable than premium memory foam.
  • The middle layer is 1 inch tall and features CoreComfort support foam that’s designed to be stronger and more durable than memory foam. Not only does this material deliver support, but it also has a subtle amount of bounce.
  • The base layer features the SolidSleep foundation, which is made from 7 inches of breathable, high-density foam. This provides a stable base for the rest of the bed.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Construction

The Aurora Luxe is 13.25 inches tall and starts with a GlacioTex™ cooling cover. This poly-blend cover is woven with fibers that help draw heat away from the sleeper, keeping the bed’s surface cool. We’ve focused on the Medium model for this construction breakdown.

Aurora by Brooklyn Bedding mattress layers
  • The comfort layer has 1.5 inches of CopperFlex™, a hyper-elastic foam that mimics the feel of latex. CopperGel™ in the foam wicks away heat and moisture and offers antimicrobial benefits.
  • The next layer features 2 inches of medium-feel Supreme Response Comfort Foam that has a bouncy element to it.
  • The transition layer of 1-inch gel swirl memory foam provides further responsiveness and cooling while easing the sleeper into the sturdy coils beneath.
  • The support layer consists of up to 1,032 8-inch pocketed Ascension® coils. These are zoned, providing extra support where most needed. Reinforced perimeter coils provide edge support.
  • A base layer of .75 inches of high-density foam provides a buffer for the coils.

Final Thoughts

Consumers in search of enhanced support, lots of bounce, and exceptional cooling properties are likely to be big fans of the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe hybrid. On the flip side, Nolah’s all-foam construction may appeal to those seeking superior motion control and enhanced pressure relief.

We think many light to average-weight sleepers could find comfort on both beds, but heavier individuals will likely be better off on something a little firmer than either of these options. If you’re still on the fence, read our in-depth reviews of each for more details.
