While Tempur-Pedic is a longstanding staple in the mattress industry, known for their memory foam beds, Helix is a younger brand just under a decade old. Don’t let that age difference fool you, though, as Helix can hold their own against this veteran competitor.
In this review, we’ll compare these two brands but also focus on two specific mattresses from each one: the Helix Midnight and the Tempud-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®. The Helix Midnight has a supportive, hybrid build, while the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® has 30 percent more contouring memory foam than other Tempur-Pedic foam models. Still torn between the Helix Midnight and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®? Let us help you figure out which mattress is right for you with our side-by-side comparison.

Helix vs. Tempur-Pedic: How Are They Different?
- Mattress type – The Helix has a hybrid build, while the Tempur-Pedic is constructed out of all foam. However, the LuxeAdapt series is available in hybrid form.
- Height – The Tempur-Pedic is taller at 13 inches, while the Helix is slightly shorter at 11.5 inches.

Helix Midnight vs. TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®: Firmness, Feel, and Construction
Firmness & Feel
We rank mattress firmness on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the firmest feel possible. We ranked the Helix Midnight as a crowd-pleasing 6, and the Soft model of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® as a slightly softer 5.
Mattress | Sleep Advisor Firmness Rating | Feel | Tester Feedback |
---|---|---|---|
Helix Midnight | 6/10 | Medium-Firm | At first, the Helix Midnight feels noticeably softer thanks to its contouring memory foam layer just underneath the cover. Yet, as you sink deeper into the Helix, its supportive coil system kicks into gear to help lift your spine into natural alignment. |
TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® | 5/10 | Medium/Medium-Plush | Tempur-Pedic beds tend to run slightly firmer, which is why the Soft model of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® felt more like a medium (or medium-plush). Its slow-moving memory foam contours around the body like a gentle hug. |
Mattress Construction
The Helix Midnight and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® don’t have a ton in common outside of their memory foam layers and breathable knit covers. The Helix is a hybrid that combines foam and coils, while the Tempur-Pedic is an all-foam bed (though there is a hybrid version available).
The Tempur-Pedic is also slightly taller at 13 inches compared to the 11.5-inch Helix. Lastly, you can purchase the Tempur-Pedic in three firmness options (Soft, Medium, and Firm), while the Helix comes in a standard medium-firm build.

Helix vs. Tempur-Pedic: Mattress Testing Performance
Pressure Relief
- Helix Midnight Pressure Relief Score: 5/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Pressure Relief Score: 5/5
One of the great things about memory foam is that it has amazing pressure relief thanks to its slow movement and contouring. Both the Helix Midnight and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®, which contain this material, got a perfect score in our category. This means that either bed should be a great choice for anyone who needs this feature in a bed, such as side sleepers or those with joint pain.
Support
- Helix Midnight Support Score: 5/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Support Score: 3.5/5
We determine support by testing how well each bed keeps our spine in alignment while stomach, back, and side sleeping. Its firmer build and uplifting coils are why we gave the Helix Midnight a 5 out of 5. Conversely, we found the Soft model of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® too plush for back and stomach sleeping. However, the brand makes Medium and Firm models that will probably suit these groups much better (the Soft variation is still a wonderful choice for light and average-weight side sleepers).
Motion Isolation
- Helix Midnight Motion Isolation Score: 5/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Motion Isolation Score: 5/5
A seismograph app helps us measure motion transfer across a bed while two people lie on it. With their contouring foam layers, it’s no surprise both the Helix Midnight and the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt absorbed movement well. We couldn’t feel our fellow testers getting in and out of bed, and our seismograph app backed up our insight by picking up on minimal transfer.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
- Helix Midnight Cooling Score: 5/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Cooling Score: 4/5
We use a thermal gun to measure the temperature of a bed before, during, and after laying on it. The Helix Midnight had stellar cooling properties and only went up 4 degrees after spending 10 minutes on it.
Memory foam is prone to trapping heat, especially in all-foam models, which is why we ranked the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® slightly lower. That said, it still did a solid job at cooling thanks to its phase change material, which helps release heat.
Bounce
- Helix Midnight Bounce Score: 3.5/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Bounce Score: 1/5
It came as no surprise that the slow-moving memory foam of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® took a long time to bounce back when we evaluated how responsive it is. On the flip side, the Helix Midnight, which has springy coils within it, generated better responsiveness. For that reason, it’s a preferred choice for combo sleepers and sexually active couples.
Edge Support
- Helix Midnight Edge Support Score: 2/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Edge Support Score: 2.5/5
If you’re a couple who likes to spread out when you sleep or sit on the edge of the bed to get ready in the morning, you may want to look elsewhere. We noticed substantial sinkage while lying and sitting on the perimeters of both the Helix Midnight and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt®. However, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt felt slightly more secure.
Couples
- Helix Midnight Couples Score: 3/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Couples Score: 3/5
We determine our couples scores by considering the mattress’s scores in other performance categories that can affect a bed-sharing experience for couples, like support, cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support.
While the Helix Midnight had better bounce, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt had slightly superior edge support. Ultimately, both beds are pretty average for couples. Instead, consider taking a look at the best mattresses for couples for more options.

Accessibility
- Helix Midnight Accessibility Score: 4/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Accessibility Score: 4/5
Accessibility refers to unique features that make a bed stand out from competitors. We ranked both beds equally since they each bring something impressive to the table but have some minor drawbacks they could have improved upon.
The Helix Midnight gives you the option to upgrade to a more powerful cooling cover, which is ideal for hot sleepers, while the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® has 30 percent more contouring memory foam than other foam models that the brand carries, which is great for those with sensitive joints. In the case of Tempur-Pedic, it only got a 4 out of 5 because we would have preferred to see a longer trial considering its price point, and the Midnight’s white glove delivery options are more limited, bringing its accessibility score to a 4.
Customer Service
- Helix Midnight Customer Service Score: 4/5
- TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt® Customer Service Score: 4/5
We reach out to each brand’s customer service to determine how easy to use and helpful they are. Helix offers email, online chat, phone, and text customer service options, but we found the chat time-consuming and clunky. Over the phone, however, the customer service was great and very helpful.
Likewise, Tempur-Pedic has phone, email, and online chat customer service that’s easy to reach. We only deducted a point because Tempur-Pedic has a $175 return fee.

Helix vs. Tempur-Pedic FAQs
What are the disadvantages of Tempur-Pedic mattresses?
Tempur-Pedic mattresses are pricey buys, with even an entry-level model costing north of $1,000 for a twin-size bed. Memory foam beds are also prone to trapping heat.
Is the Helix brand good?
Helix is widely regarded as a leading brand in the mattress space thanks to their well-made yet affordable hybrid beds.
How long do Helix mattresses last?
A Helix mattress should last anywhere from seven to 10 years with proper care. Be sure to keep your bedding washed and rotate the mattress every six months.
Do Helix mattresses get softer?
Memory foam mattresses tend to soften when they heat up. This means your bed might feel firm at first, but will eventually start to contour around your body when you lay on it.
Our Final Thoughts on Helix vs. Tempur-Pedic
At the end of the day, Helix Midnight and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt are totally different beds that each come with great features. The Helix Midnight has award-worthy support thanks to its uplifting hybrid construction, plus the option to upgrade to a powerful cooling cover, while the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt has extra-contouring foam that’s wonderful for pressure relief.
As far as the brands go, price is a factor since you’ll pay significantly more for a Tempur-Pedic, but you also get free in-home delivery included with that. On the other hand, Helix offers a longer sleep trial, giving you more time to test it at home before settling on your decision.
