There are times when getting a good night’s rest is a pain in the neck — literally. If you often find yourself waking up with neck pain, your pillow may be the culprit. Sleep accessories like the ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical pillow claim to be ergonomically designed to relieve neck pain more effectively.
ZAMAT’s founder, Cindy Chen, experienced chronic neck pain that disrupted her sleep. After not finding a suitable cervical pillow, Chen worked with a manufacturer to develop a prototype. She was so happy with the results that she started her own company.
As someone who has experienced my share of neck pain, I was excited to test out the ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical pillow. I’ll break down how this pillow performed for me and give you the ins and outs of its materials and construction. I’ll also share how I think it will work for those with different preferred sleep positions.

- People who enjoy more traditionally-shaped pillows – The ZAMAT Butterfly Cervical pillow has a unique design that may make it difficult to put in a pillowcase or incorporate with other pillows on your bed.
- Stomach sleepers – As a combination stomach/side sleeper, I found that it was a little tricky to get comfortable and keep my head from craning when sleeping on my side.
- Hot sleepers – I don’t sleep particularly hot, but I could definitely see where if you did, this pillow could heat you up because of its use of memory foam. Read more about cooling pillows here.
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
To ensure that we are giving you a comprehensive overview of mattresses, pillows, and other sleep accessories, we put them through multiple tests, including, in this case, incorporating the product into our nightly sleep routine. Additionally, we will break down tangible characteristics, as well as those that are more subjective like cooling and comfort.
What is the ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical Pillow Made of?
Cover
The quilted cover is made from 100 percent polyester. It has a silky-like feel when you run your hand over it and provides soft comfort with the subtle patterned stitching. There is a small zipper on the back side of the pillow, and while the zipper didn’t present any problems, you may notice the zipper pull if you tend to slide a hand under your pillow.
Core
The core is made entirely of memory foam — or polyurethane non-temperature sensitive memory foam, to be exact. It is soft and supportive, and the adjustable contouring, which is achieved by sleeping on different areas of the pillow, follows the natural curves of your body.
ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical Pillow Firmness & Feel
Firmness
Although firmness, or how hard or soft a product is, is a rather subjective field, there are some characteristics of products that can be applied when determining how most people will respond to a given product. With that being said, I found that this pillow landed slightly softer than a medium firmness. Therefore, if you are someone who likes a really soft or a truly firm pillow, this may not be the best fit for you, but a vast majority of sleepers should appreciate the feel of the ZAMAT Butterfly Cervical pillow.
Feel
The cover is soft and smooth to the touch. When I first took this out of the box, I was a little shocked by how dense this pillow felt. However, I think that is more so because its nontraditional shape felt so much different than traditional pillows. Once I had it on the bed, I noticed how responsive the memory foam was and that the ergonomic design contoured around the shape of my head, neck, and shoulders in a cozy way.
Loft
The loft, which refers to how tall a pillow is, comes in at a little over 5 inches tall. Generally, this is a great height for folks who prefer to sleep on their back and sides. As a part-time side sleeper, I definitely found this to be the case.
Weight (Density of the Pillow)
This pillow weighs in at just 2.5 pounds. This is on the lighter side, but the density of the pillow creates some heft.
Sleeping on the ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical Pillow
When lying on my side, I loved how I could turn the pillow to the higher side to keep my head elevated. This put my spine in good alignment, and I enjoyed how it felt to put my arms around the side wings.
Although I am not typically a back sleeper, I tried it out on my back and really enjoyed how the lower side that is recommended for back sleepers allowed me to experience a gentle hug around my neck and back while feeling very supported.
Although I experienced some strain when sleeping on my stomach on both the low and high sides, I can see where larger bodies may not have the same issue.
Side Sleepers
After sleeping on my side on this pillow for several nights, I think that most people who prefer this position will benefit from the ergonomic design of the ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical pillow. This could be especially true for those who, like me, tend to hold a lot of tension in their shoulders and necks.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers are likely to appreciate how supported their head is and how the contouring elevation allows them to keep their airways open, which can cut down on snoring.

Stomach Sleepers
Although this pillow claims that it is a great fit for stomach sleepers, I didn’t find this to be the case. The loft of this pillow made it feel like my neck was craning. Further, the density felt claustrophobic in this posture.
However, stomach sleepers with larger bodies may do just fine with this pillow and not feel as if they are sleeping as far down into the pillow.

Sleep Advisor’s Performance Ratings for the ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical Pillow
Temperature
3/5
The ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical pillow is made from dense memory foam, a material that is known to sleep hot, especially if countermeasures aren’t taken to combat its penchant for retaining heat. The polyester cover on this pillow is cool and didn’t seem to trap heat, but other than that, there wasn’t much when it came to cooling properties.
Support
4/5
The slow-moving memory foam core of this pillow provides plenty of support. This is especially true for back and side sleepers, who should find that this pillow supports their head and neck while also providing gentle contouring. However, those who sleep on their stomach may find that this pillow is actually a bit too supportive and may make their head and neck feel as if it is craning.
Durability
5/5
If you’re looking for a solid, long-lasting cervical pillow, this one should fit your bill. The dense block of memory foam is durable and responsive. Therefore, it should serve you well through the years and keep its shape.
Comfort
4/5
Comfort is, of course, subjective, and given the unique features of cervical pillows, it may take some a little longer to decide if they think this pillow is comfortable. This was the case for me, but after I got used to it, I thought it provided quite a bit of comfort, especially when I was sleeping on my side or back. The cover is soft and has a silky feel to it and it felt soothing against my face and arms.
Off-Gassing
5/5
Although memory foam is often associated with a chemical odor known as off-gassing, I didn’t notice any smell when I unpackaged this pillow.
Allergens
4/5
Memory foam is generally accepted as hypoallergenic, and the polyester cover should do a good job of repelling some allergens. Additionally, the cover can be removed and washed to rid it of dust mites and other substances that can cause allergy symptoms.
Cleaning & Care
4/5
The ZAMAT Butterfly Button Cervical pillow’s cover is removable and machine washable. The company recommends removing the cover often to vent the pillow, but you should not wash the interior of the pillow.
Sleep Trial & Warranty
5/5
ZAMAT offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty, both of which are well above the industry standard.
