Casper vs. Avocado vs. Purple Mattress Comparison for 2024

Searching for a mattress can be daunting, especially with so many different brands available. Three popular bed-in-a-box brands are Casper, Avocado, and Purple. Casper is research-based and eco-friendly. Avocado is focused on affordable, sustainable products handmade in the U.S.. And Purple’s brand is based on its innovative technology, a GelFlex™ Grid unlike anything else on the market.

This comparison will focus on these brands’ most popular models, the Casper Original, the Avocado Green, and the Purple Original.

Casper vs. Avocado vs. Purple: How Are They Similar?

  • Good for lightweight sleepers – All three of these mattresses should perform well for lightweight sleepers, regardless of the sleeping position.
  • Cooling mattresses – The Casper, Avocado Green, and Purple are all cooling mattresses. Each bed has unique qualities to help with temperature regulation.
  • Free shipping in the continental USA – All three brands offer free shipping in the continental United States but have a fee when shipping to Alaska and Hawaii.

Casper vs. Avocado vs. Purple: How Are They Different?

  • Price – Each of these beds is priced differently. For a queen-size bed, the Casper costs $1,295, the Avocado Green is $1,999, and the Purple is $1,499. This makes Avocado the most expensive of the bunch.
  • Responsiveness – The Casper, Avocado Green, and Purple mattresses differ in how responsive or bouncy they are. The Avocado Green is the most responsive, followed by the Purple, and the Casper is the least bouncy of the three beds.
  • Firmness level – These three beds have different firmness levels. The Casper is medium-firm, the Avocado Green is firm, and the Purple is soft.

Casper vs. Avocado vs. Purple: Firmness, Feel, and Construction

Firmness & Feel

We rate a bed’s firmness, which is how soft or hard it feels, on a scale of 1 to 10. We find that most beds fall in the middle of this scale but some are noticeably softer or firmer, and in the case of these beds, there’s quite a difference.

MattressSleep Advisor Firmness RatingFeelTester Feedback
Casper6/10Medium-FirmThe Casper is a true medium-firm mattress, earning a 6 out of 10 on our rating scale. The mattress’s pillow top feels soft, cool, and responsive. The bed should contour to your body, yet support your spine.

Avocado Green7/10FirmIf you are looking for a firm bed, you might want to try the Avocado Green, which we rate a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale. While this bed is quite firm, it still feels inviting to lie on. Julia, a Sleep Advisor tester, didn’t sink into the mattress too much. She also noted that the bed felt bouncy, making it easy for her to move around on the Avocado Green.
Purple4/10SoftWe rated the Purple mattress a 4 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it’s a soft mattress. When you first lie on this bed, you’ll feel the classic Purple grid, which isn’t like anything you’ve felt before. This grid can contour to your body, but it can also provide a good bit of bounce.

Mattress Construction

The Casper, Avocado Green, and Purple are similar in that they all have mattress covers and a supportive base layer, but that’s where their similarities end. The Casper and Purple are all-foam beds, while the Avocado Green is a hybrid mattress, containing layers of latex and coils. Further, the Casper and Avocado Green are 11 inches tall, whereas the Purple stands 9.25 inches high.

Casper vs. Avocado vs. Purple: Mattress Testing Performance

Pressure Relief

  • Casper Mattress Pressure Relief Score: 4/5
  • Avocado Green Pressure Relief Score: 4/5
  • Purple Mattress Pressure Relief Score: 5/5

The Purple mattress earned first place when it came to relieving pressure, scoring a 5 out of 5. Julia experienced no pressure buildup and felt almost weightless when lying on this bed.

The Casper and Avocado Green mattresses both earned a score of 4 out of 5, which means they have pretty good pressure relief as well. The Casper bed doesn’t provide quite enough cushioned sinkage to have stellar pressure relief, so we deducted a point. Similarly, the Avocado Green’s latex won’t hug your pressure points like a memory foam bed will, so we scored it a 4 as well.

Support

  • Casper Mattress Support Score: 5/5
  • Avocado Green Support Score: 5/5
  • Purple Mattress Support Score: 4/5

To evaluate a mattress’s support, our mattress testers lie on their backs, stomachs, and sides. All of these mattresses are very supportive beds, and we gave the Casper and Avocado Green perfect scores for their support. The Casper’s zoned support layer and supportive base provide excellent stability and contribute to proper spinal alignment. Similarly, the Avocado Green’s individually pocketed coils kept our testers’ spines aligned without sinkage. Our lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight testers felt well supported by the Avocado Green, which is rare.

Stomach Sleeping on Casper Mattress
Tester Emma Mattei seeing how supportive the Casper mattress is for stomach sleepers

While we didn’t score the Purple quite as well as the other two mattresses, it is still a pretty supportive bed. The Purple’s grid and edge-to-edge support foam should provide the necessary support for sleepers to keep their backs straight. We deducted a point from this mattress’s score because when Julia, our average-weight tester, was on her stomach, she sank a bit, which caused her hips and spine to be misaligned.

Motion Isolation

  • Casper Mattress Motion Isolation Score: 5/5
  • Avocado Green Motion Isolation Score: 2.5/5
  • Purple Mattress Motion Isolation Score: 3/5

Motion isolation is going to be most helpful for co-sleepers so they’re not jostled awake every time their bed mate moves around. Our motion isolation testing involves using a seismograph app to detect motion transfer and having our testers note whether they actually feel something moving around on the bed.

The Casper outperforms these other two beds by a landslide here. Our mattress testers didn’t feel any movement, which earned this bed a 5 out of 5.

Contrasting our glowing review of the Casper’s motion isolation, the Avocado Green and Purple didn’t perform quite as well. The Avocado Green’s seismograph picked up significant movement, which isn’t totally surprising considering this mattress has both latex and coils, which are great for bounce but not so great for motion isolation. The Purple mattress isolates movement slightly better than the Avocado, but the seismograph still detected significant motion.

Temperature Regulation / Cooling

  • Casper Mattress Cooling Score: 4/5
  • Avocado Green Cooling Score: 4/5
  • Purple Mattress Cooling Score: 5/5

To test cooling, we use a temperature gun before our tester lies on the bed, and then we take the temperature again after they’ve been on the bed for five and 10 minutes. We also consider whether the mattress’s cover feels cool to our testers.

Of the three mattresses, the Purple has the best cooling abilities. Its breathable cover felt cool-to-the-touch and the grid design dispersed heat nicely.

Purple Original mattress construction
A view of Purple’s proprietary grid, which helped with temperature regulation and earned this mattress a 5 out of 5 for cooling.

While not scoring a 5 out of 5 like the Purple, the Casper and the Avocado Green still have great temperature regulation. Casper’s top layer of proprietary foam keeps body heat from being trapped in the mattress, but it doesn’t feel cool to the touch, which is why we docked a point.

The Avocado Green’s temperature started at 70.8 degrees Fahrenheit, then increased to 80.8, and finally decreased to 80.2 degrees. Although the Avocado’s temperature increased by 10 degrees, it did begin to cool down, so we scored it a 4 out of 5 for cooling.

Bounce

  • Casper Mattress Bounce Score: 3/5
  • Avocado Green Bounce Score: 5/5
  • Purple Mattress Bounce Score: 4/5

We test a bed’s bounce by dropping a 10-pound medicine ball on it, along with moving our bodies around on the mattress to gauge how easy (or not) repositioning is.

The Avocado Green is the bounciest of the three mattresses, which makes sense because it is a latex hybrid and the other two are foam beds. The Avocado Green’s layers bounced back almost instantly when Julia dropped the medicine ball onto it, and she moved around on the bed super easily.

The Purple mattress has good bounce, just not as good as the Avocado Green’s. Its grid design and responsive memory foam should be great for sexually active people or folks with limited mobility. The only way this bed’s bounce could improve would be by adding some sort of coils to the mattress.

The Casper mattress has average bounce, especially compared to the Avocado Green and Purple beds. Since this mattress is an all-foam bed, it just won’t provide the same responsiveness that a hybrid or innerspring bed can.

Edge Support

  • Casper Mattress Edge Support Score: 4/5
  • Avocado Green Edge Support Score: 5/5
  • Purple Mattress Edge Support Score: 3/5

We test a bed’s edge support by lying and sitting at the edge of the mattress for a minute and seeing how well-supported we feel. The Avocado Green has the best edge support of these three mattresses. Julia was impressed that she barely felt like she was sinking or sliding while at the edge.

While the Casper mattress didn’t earn a perfect score for edge support, it still performed pretty well. When lying on the edge of this mattress, you might not feel fully supported, but you also shouldn’t feel like you’re about to fall off the bed.

edge support on casper original
Testing edge support on the Casper mattress

Lastly, the Purple has the worst edge support of the three beds. The foam grid’s reinforcement was pretty mediocre, and we wouldn’t recommend this bed to people who like to sleep at the edge or those with limited mobility who need extra support getting in and out of bed.

Couples

  • Casper Mattress Couples Score: 4/5
  • Avocado Green Couples Score: 4/5
  • Purple Mattress Couples Score: 3/5

To decide how much we’d recommend a mattress to couples, we consider specific factors most beneficial to couples, such as support, edge support, motion isolation, cooling, and bounce. We also consider whether it has a versatile enough firmness to accommodate two different people; for reference, medium-firm is usually best for couples.

The Avocado Green and the Casper are great choices for couples, each earning a score of 4 out of 5. The Avocado Green fared well in each of these categories except for motion isolation, which is why we deducted a point from its score. The Casper has a great medium-firm feel and excels at motion isolation, but it might not have good edge support for couples to spread out or enough bounce to appease sexually active couples.

We gave the Purple mattress a 3 out of 5 for couples because bounce and temperature regulation were the only areas where it scored well. Specifically, couples might be bothered by this bed’s average edge support and motion isolation. Additionally, couples may not feel supported enough when sharing a soft mattress like the Purple.

Our Final Thoughts on Casper vs. Avocado vs. Purple

Casper, Avocado, and Purple are three established bed-in-a-box brands that provide great quality mattresses, and they each have their unique attributes. For example, Avocado leans eco-friendly, while Purple focuses on innovation technically, and Casper leans into more traditional foam and hybrid designs.

Similarly, you can experience these differences in the beds we’ve featured in this comparison.

If you’re after a more traditional foam bed with a balanced medium-firm feel and good motion isolation, the Casper would be the one for you. The Avocado Green is going to be great for sexually active couples, eco-conscious shoppers, combo sleepers, and stomach sleepers. Finally, the Purple is a soft mattress foam mattress that includes Purple’s signature GelFlex™ Grid layer, and we recommend checking out this one if you’re a hot sleeper, a side or back sleeper, or you experience joint pain.
