Who I’d Recommend the DreamCloud For
- Side sleepers – The DreamCloud is a softer mattress, so it should provide good pressure relief and body contouring for side sleepers in most body weight categories.
- Luxury shoppers – We think this mattress scores highly for affordable luxury, with its cashmere-blend cover, premium foams, gel infusions and high-quality coils.
- Lightweight people – This mattress is on the plush side, so it should be suitable for sleepers under 130 pounds in most sleeping positions.

Who I’d Recommend the Purple For
- Shoppers looking for innovative design – The feel of the Purple’s patented GelFlex grid is unique and may take some getting used to, but we think it would suit a wide range of sleepers.
- Couples – This mattress is incredibly versatile and designed to adapt to all body shapes, sizes, and sleeping positions, which makes it a great choice for couples with differing requirements.
- Combination sleepers – The versatility of the mattress combined with the relative buoyancy of the GelFlex grid should make changing from one sleeping position to another a breeze.
Comparing DreamCloud vs Purple: Top Similarities
- Cooling – Both beds feature different cooling properties, and we found they both lived up to their temperature regulation claims.
- Cost – Both mattresses sell for identical, affordable prices in most sizes, with only a few hundred dollars difference in other sizes.
- Motion isolation – Couples will appreciate the minimal motion transfer in both of these beds.
Comparing DreamCloud vs Purple: Key Differences
- Trial and warranty – You’ll get a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty with the DreamCloud, and a 100-night trial and 10-year limited warranty with the Purple.
- Construction – The DreamCloud is a hybrid model, combining layers of memory foam, standard foam and a coil unit. The Purple features a unique design by way of the patented GelFlex grid, which sits on top of two foam layers.
- Height – The Purple has a profile of 9.5 inches compared to the DreamCloud’s 14 inches, which may be better for those who have issues getting in and out of bed. It can also affect the use of an existing bed base or bed sheets.
Comparing Firmness, Support & Feel
Firmness
Our firmness scale ranges from 1 to 10, with one being exceptionally soft and 10 being incredibly firm. The DreamCloud comes in at 5.5 out of 10, while the Purple is a 6 out of 10, so both have what is considered a medium firmness.
Side sleepers should appreciate the plush feel of the DreamCloud, while the Purple’s adaptive engineering and medium firmness should suits a wide range of sleepers.
Support
We think light to average-weight side sleepers will really benefit from the support offered by the DreamCloud, which has three foam layers and an innerspring layer to help keep you in alignment.
The Purple should suit a variety of sleepers, thanks to its two layers of poly-foam and adaptive grid, which was designed to keep your spine in alignment, regardless of how you’re sleeping. However, we think some heavier sleepers would benefit from the support of a firmer mattress.
Feel
The clue is in the name with the DreamCloud, which feels incredibly plush when you press your hand into the soft cover, pushing down into the pressure-relieving memory foam. The 2-inch foam transition layer prevents you from sinking into the firm layer of coils beneath it.
Push your hand into the grid of the Purple and you’ll feel its springiness and an element of bounce. Once lying down, the GelFlex material will contour your body, offering a gentle hug.
Comparing Sinkage and Bounce
The DreamCloud’s coil unit offers some bounce but not much as a traditional innerspring bed. Bounce from the Purple comes from the GelFlex grid layer, which feels fairly buoyant, although again, this won’t be as much as you’d feel from a traditional innerspring.
Combination sleepers may find a little too much sinkage from the DreamCloud, which could make it hard to change positions. Sinkage on the Purple is adaptive, with curvier parts of the body sinking deeper than other areas. This means you’ll get a deep hug around the hips and shoulders when lying on your side and a gentle cradle when sleeping on your back.
Comparing Motion Transfer
Despite being a softer bed and having an innerspring unit, the DreamCloud offers excellent motion isolation, as the coils are individually wrapped, minimizing motion transfer. The foam layers further help to absorb movement. While you’ll feel slightly more movement from a partner or pet than you would from a firmer option, we think this is still a great choice for those who share a bed.
Despite being slightly springy, the Purple’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer grid offers fantastic motion isolation, with the grid’s squares absorbing much of the movement, allowing you to sleep soundly.
We think both these beds are some of the Best Mattresses for Couples.
Comparing Cooling
The DreamCloud’s breathable cover helps to keep things cool from the get-go, with cooling gel added to the memory foam layer for further temperature regulation. Additionally, individually-wrapped coils located in the innerspring unit allow for extra airflow and breathability.
The material used in the Purple’s GelFlex grid is engineered to be temperature neutral and as a result, doesn’t retain body heat. The square design adds further cooling, allowing air to flow and heat to escape.
We recommend both the DreamCloud and Purple to hot sleepers or those living in warmer climates.
Comparing Construction (Materials & Quality)
DreamCloud Construction
The DreamCloud is a 14-inch hybrid mattress, with a breathable, cashmere-blend quilted top cover that’s soft to the touch.
- Stitched to the cover is 1.5 inches of plush foam, offering soft cushioning for pressure points.
- The second layer features an inch of memory foam that’s infused with cooling gel. This layer adapts to your shape for responsive contouring and pressure relief.
- The dynamic transition layer has 2 inches of standard foam, providing spinal support and preventing you from sinking into the firm coil layer beneath.
- The innerspring unit features 8.5-inch pocketed steel coils that help support the body in different positions. The perimeter is made with reinforced coils for better edge support.
- The stability layer has an inch of standard foam, providing support for the layers above.
- The base features a shift-resistant cover, preventing the mattress from moving around when you do. Four handles are attached, to help you set up or move the mattress with ease.
Purple Construction
The 9.5-inch thick Purple mattress starts with a breathable SoftFlex cover made of polyester, viscose, and lycra, that’s designed to adapt to your movements, allowing you to make the most of the comfort layers below.
- Below the cover is 2 inches of breathable GelFlex grid, also known as Hyper-Elastic Polymer. This highly durable grid offers comfort by releasing and equalizing pressure across the body, giving both targeted support and pressure relief. The material doesn’t retain heat, and the squares allow for airflow and breathability. A foam perimeter offers good edge support.
- The central layer is made of 3.5 inches of medium-soft polyurethane foam, acting as a comfort layer as well as a transition layer, easing you into the harder base.
- The base layer features 4 inches of firm, supportive foam, keeping the bed in shape and providing durability.

Final Thoughts
The Purple offers a deep hug for some sleepers, depending on body weight and sleeping position, so it could be a good choice for those looking for versatility. The element of buoyancy could be ideal for those with mobility issues and combination sleepers.
We think the DreamCloud would suit most lightweight sleepers, as they’ll likely experience a great balance of gentle cushioning and support offered by the memory foam and coil unit. Average-weight side and back sleepers should also get on well with this model.
Heavier sleepers will get on better with the Purple, though we think most heavyweight people would find better support with a firmer mattress.
