With a name like Avocado Eco Organic, you can expect a mattress full of organic, sustainable materials. And while this mattress does boast an eco-friendly build, it doesn’t come with that frustratingly high price point you often encounter with organic mattresses. Aside from price and sustainability, this Avocado bed delivers when it comes to support, cooling, and bounce, and it should be a good match for those who like a firmer mattress.

Who We Recommend the Avocado Eco Organic For:
- Hot sleepers – We think this latex hybrid is an excellent option for hot sleepers because latex is naturally cooling. On top of that, coils in its construction promote airflow to keep you cool. Cotton and wool are also helpful for temperature regulation, so overheating shouldn’t be an issue.
- Environmentally-conscious shoppers on a budget – If you have a tight budget but still want to shop green, the Avocado Eco is a good choice. This bed was designed to cost less while still using high-quality, organic, and eco-friendly materials.
- Back and stomach sleepers – Our team found this mattress to be on the firmer side, which should make it a good option for stomach and back sleepers who prefer firmer mattresses.
Who We Don’t Recommend the Avocado Eco Organic For:
- People who prefer memory foam beds – The Eco has innerspring coils and latex, so it’s quite bouncy. If you’re after the slow-sinking feeling of memory foam, you may want to look for a memory foam mattress instead.
- Side sleepers – Side sleepers usually need a softer mattress to cradle their hips and shoulders in this position. The Avocado Eco is on the firmer side and is likely to feel even firmer for side sleepers.
Customer Reviews of the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress
The Avocado Eco Organic has 4.4 out of 5 stars based on over 600 reviews on Avocado’s official website. Most reviews are positive, with multiple customers remarking how the bed helped with their back pain. Some criticisms of the Eco Organic, however, were that it was too firm.
Testing the Avocado Eco Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
At Sleep Advisor, our mattress reviews are based on findings from in-person tests that allow us to have a genuine understanding of how the mattress feels and performs. In order to find out who this mattress is best suited for, we tested out the Avocado Eco for specific features. These included: cooling, motion isolation, bounce, and edge support. We also lay on the mattress in different positions to test its performance in both support and pressure relief.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7.5/10
Mattress firmness is how soft or hard a bed feels to you. We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. This scale helps us describe how mattresses are likely to feel for most sleepers.
Our team rated the Avocado Eco a 7.5 out of 10, meaning it has a firmer feel.
How Does the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Feel?
The first thing our testers noticed when lying on the Avocado Eco is the firm feel. You’re likely to feel more ‘on top of’ the mattress than ‘in’ it. This is because of the coils and latex that don’t give sleepers to sink too deeply.
There’s a softer wool layer above the latex, and we found it provides some cushioning but not enough to change the overall feel.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Avocado, the Eco Organic mattress has a weight capacity of 350 pounds per side or 700 pounds total.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | We think this mattress is too firm for lightweight side sleepers because they probably won’t sink enough to experience adequate pressure relief. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Average-weight side sleepers may also find this bed too firm. The more rigid feel might cause pressure buildup in the shoulders and hips for these people. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Most heavy sleepers should be able to activate the upper layers and sink deep enough to experience pressure relief in sensitive areas such as hips, shoulders, and knees. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | We think the Avocado Eco may feel too firm for back sleepers weighing under 130 pounds because they don’t weigh enough to activate the comfort layer. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | The Avocado Eco may fit average-weight back sleepers closer to 230 pounds, but those closer to 130 pounds may prefer something they can sink into a bit more. This is because they would likely feel their hips pushing up and out of the bed, which can result in back and hip pain. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | In our opinion, heavy back sleepers should like the Avocado Eco as it feels supportive and comfortable under the hips for those over 230 pounds. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
---|---|---|
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Stomach sleepers need a firm bed that doesn’t collapse under the hips. Those under 130 pounds should experience the Eco as even firmer, which should feel good around the hips and lower back. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | We’d say the Eco is a good fit for average-weight stomach sleepers as it provides a balance of pressure relief and support for this group of people. The hips are unlikely to sink too deeply, so the spine can stay in alignment. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Heavyweight stomach sleepers should get plenty of support, but we think those over 300 pounds may want a mattress made specifically for heavy sleepers. |
Pressure Relief
3.5/5
In general, the Avocado Eco Organic mattress may not be the best for those who struggle with pressure buildup. From our experience, it doesn’t offer too much contouring or sinkage, so you may feel some pressure on the joints, which is why it got a 3.5 out of 5 here.
Some people may find more relief than others, depending on their body weight and preferred sleeping position. For example, heavier back sleepers should experience more relief than lighter-weight side sleepers.
Is the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
Although this mattress is on the firmer side, we think its supportive feel could be good for pain relief in certain positions.
Back Pain | People with back pain usually steer toward firmer mattresses, but some may prefer a more medium-firm bed that offers more contouring. The Avocado may be too firm for back pain if you’re lightweight — unless you’re a strict stomach sleeper. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | We wouldn’t recommend this bed to side sleepers struggling with hip pain because they people likely won’t get enough cushioning. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper with hip pain, you may like this bed because it can keep your hips from dipping too much. That said, some people may still prefer a bit more cushioning against their hips while lying on their stomachs Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | Side sleepers usually experience shoulder pain when sleeping on a mattress that’s too firm, which is why they may prefer a softer bed with more contouring. Unless you’re well above 230 pounds, this bed is likely too firm to relieve shoulder pain. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
When looking for a supportive mattress, you want to get something that won’t sag after a while and will keep your body aligned in whatever position you like sleeping in.
The Avocado Eco Organic is firm and durable enough not to dip down while you’re sleeping thanks to its combination of latex foam and coils. More specifically, it can offer enough support beneath the lumbar area to help keep lower back pain at bay. However, it doesn’t have zoned support, so the firmness level is the same under the shoulders and hips, which can be too rigid for some people. Overall, though, this bed should feel plenty supportive for many body types and sleep postures, which is why we gave it a 5 out of 5 here.
Motion Isolation
2.5/5
Motion transfer is an important factor many people look for when buying a new mattress. Having a bed with good motion isolation means you’re less likely to feel your partner moving on the other side of the bed.
Since the Eco mattress has coils and latex, both of which are bouncy and responsive, we found that it doesn’t have the best motion isolation. The bed carries a lot of movement from one side to the other, which can be a drawback for people who wake up easily and sleep beside something else.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4.5/5
If you’re a hot sleeper, you probably know the struggle of trying to sleep when the bed is too warm, and a cooling mattress could help combat this issue. Many mattresses have advanced cooling technology so they stay cool, but the Avocado Eco Organic does this naturally. This Avocado model has latex that’s naturally temperature-neutral, so overheating shouldn’t be a concern. It also has coils to foster airflow throughout the bed.
We took a half-point off here because maybe they could’ve added a stronger, more effective cooling feature for those who sleep extremely hot. Something like a cool-to-the-touch cover, for example.
Bounce
5/5
Combination sleepers and people who struggle with mobility usually go for bouncier beds that assist with movement. The Avocado Eco Organic is one such mattress that we think would be useful for these people. We found it has good bounce to it, which is probably due to the latex near the surface of the bed. On top of that, it has coils that are also buoyant.
Edge Support
3.5/5
Although this bed has coils and is on the firmer side, its edge support is a bit lacking, so you’ll notice a bit of sinking when you sit or lie along the sides. This could be a drawback for people who like sleeping near the edge of the bed, particularly for couples who want to spread out. Although you probably won’t slide off the bed, you may feel less secure, which is why this Avocado mattress only got a 3.5 here.
Accessibility
4.5/5
In our accessibility category, we look at the mattress as a whole, what it brings to the table, and how it performs. This Avocado is made to appeal to eco-conscious shoppers who want a more sustainable, naturally-derived product. In that regard, it definitely goes the extra mile in its design and its multitude of third-party certifications for this.
The brand offers industry-standard customer deals like a 10-year warranty, a 100-night trial, and white glove delivery. However, we docked a half-point here only because the white glove delivery costs extra.
Customer Service
3.5/5
Avocado is a well-known brand that upholds their policies. As far as communication, they do an online chat system and once you open it, you can see a phone number where you can also call with questions. However, aside from their chat, their website doesn’t make it very easy to find where to reach them via phone or email.
They also have a $99 return fee if you change your mind after buying this bed. For these reasons, we only gave it a 3.5 out of 5 here.
Performance for Couples
3.5/5
We consider a great mattress for couples to perform well in categories that are most helpful for couples, such as overall support, cooling, bounce, motion isolation, and edge support. We also like to see that the bed has a high-enough weight capacity for two people along with a versatile firmness.
While the Avocado Eco Organic mattress does well in some of these categories, it underperforms in others. First and foremost, it has average edge support and even worse motion isolation. This can be a problem if you want to use the entire surface of the bed or if your partner is a restless sleeper.
The weight limit is suitable for most, but some brands have higher ones. Also, the firm feel isn’t as accommodating compared to a medium-firm option. For these reasons, we gave it a 3.5 out of 5 for couples.

Construction: What’s Inside Avocado Eco Organic?
The Avocado Eco Organic is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it arrives at your home compressed into a box. You’ll first notice this mattress’ luxurious, organic cotton cover, which I think feels gentle and crisp thanks to how breathable cotton is.
The Avocado Eco Organic mattress has three layers, all of which are eco-friendly, making this bed a good option for eco-conscious shoppers. What I like is that it has a nice beige color, so it looks clean and sleek. Together, the layers stand 10 inches tall.
- Beneath the cover is a layer of organic wool that provides a bit of cushioning. This also acts as a natural flame retardant. The wool is GOTS-certified and temperature-neutral, which is a good thing for those who sleep hot.
- Next is the bed’s comfort layer made from a piece of Dunlop latex sourced from eco-friendly farms in India and Guatemala. I found that this is where most of the bounce comes from. This layer also offers a bit of contouring but doesn’t let you sink too deeply.
- The support layer features around 988 coils that stand 8 inches tall. These are made from recycled steel and are individually wrapped in fabric, which allows them to move independently. The coils promote airflow throughout the bed to prevent it from overheating.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The unpacking process is simple and takes only around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. We didn’t find any off-gassing odors, which is likely because this mattress is made from sustainable materials. It may take a few minutes to decompress and reach its full size, but the lack of off-gassing is great for those who are sensitive to smells.
Certifications
- GREENGUARD Gold-certified – This mattress was tested for prolonged exposure in environmental chambers to meet emission standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, like volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and phthalates.
- OEKO-TEX®-Certified – This ensures that there is no formaldehyde or heavy metals in this mattress. It also goes a step further by barring this distinction for other chemicals that they deem harmful, even if there are no legal regulations barring their use.
- MADE SAFE® Certified – This involves a rigorous scientific screening process that only allows the use of ingredients that are not known to harm human health, animals, aquatic life, or ecosystems. Avocado is one of only three mattress brands with this certification.
- Certified Natural Materials – The cotton in the cover is GOTS-certified, which means the material meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The mattress’ second layer and tufting yarn are made from GOTS-certified wool. The latex is certified by GOLS.

Avocado Eco Organic Mattress FAQs
Are Avocado mattresses really organic?
Avocado mattresses are among the most eco-friendly options on the market. The company uses organic cotton, latex, and wool, as well as recycled steel coils. They also use recyclable paper for the packaging.
Which is better, the Avocado Eco Organic or Avocado Green?
We think the Eco Organic mattress is a better option for those who want a firmer bed and are on a tighter budget. The Avocado Green is more luxurious and, with that, more expensive. That said, the Avocado Green is more of a true medium-firm, so it’s more accommodating for those who need pressure relief.
The Eco Organic comes with a 10-year warranty, whereas the Green comes with a 25-year warranty. With that said, it’s hard to tell which is better because that largely depends on your needs and budget.
How thick is the Avocado Eco mattress?
The Avocado Eco Organic mattress is 10 inches thick.
Is the Avocado Eco Organic mattress bouncy?
Yes, the Avocado Eco Organic is bouncy, thanks to latex and innerspring coils, both of which are buoyant materials.
Can you flip the Avocado Eco organic mattress?
The Avocado Eco mattress is not designed to be flipped, so I wouldn’t suggest you do this. Instead, you can rotate it to ensure even wear.

Our Verdict of the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress
Finding an eco-friendly, organic mattress that’s also affordable is no easy task, but the Avocado Eco is just that. This is an excellent bed designed with respect for the planet, your health, and your safety. It’s made from high-quality materials and has a lengthy warranty that’s likely to cover its lifetime. Upon testing this bed, we found there are many things to love about it. The firmer, supportive feel should be great for stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers, but side sleepers and lighter back sleepers may enjoy something that provides more sinkage for the shoulders and hips.
