Please note: Brooklyn Bedding has discontinued the Bowery and replaced it with the Brooklyn Bedding Essential. All of the Bowery links in this article will take you to the Essential mattress, which we will review soon.

The Brooklyn Bowery mattress is one such mattress. In fact, the Bowery is the most budget-friendly option in Brooklyn Bedding’s portfolio. A hybrid bed, it combines individually-wrapped coils with three thick foam layers.
In this Brooklyn Bedding Bowery review, we take a deeper dive into the construction of this mattress. We also break down how the Bowery performed through a litany of tests, and let you know the type of sleepers that should most enjoy snoozing on this bed.

Who We Recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery For:
- Those looking for quality and affordability – This bed is made with quality materials such as gel memory foam and individually-encased coils, but it’s available at a price that should fit into many budgets.
- Folks who sleep hot – With several cooling properties, this mattress should help those who get hot at night sleep cool. The top layer has gel-infused foam that draws heat away from the body as well as coils that promote airflow throughout the mattress.
- Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers – Those who fall into the lightweight or average-weight camps and like to sleep on their sides should enjoy the pressure-relieving properties of the Bowery.
Who We Don’t Recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery:
- Heavyweight folks – People on the heavier side may find that they push through the upper foam layers too easily. Additionally, this mattress may not provide enough firmness or support. These sleepers may be better served by the Brooklyn Bedding Titan, which uses a reinforced coil system for more robust support.
- Stomach sleepers – There’s a lot to love about this hybrid mattress but most stomach sleepers may find they need a bit more support. Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer model as their hips may sink too deeply in softer beds, which can compromise spine alignment.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10 (Medium-Firm)
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid hits right around the middle of our firmness scale, coming in at 6 out of 10, which puts it at a medium firmness level. When we talk about firmness, we’re simply referring to how soft or firm a mattress feels. Although firmness is subjective, this scale should help you determine whether a mattress can work for you based on your preferred sleeping position and body weight.
The Bowery’s medium-firm feel should be a good fit for many sleepers as it hits a sweet spot between extra firmness and super soft. However, some heavyweight sleepers who sink deeper into the mattress may find this bed a bit too soft.
How Does It Feel?
When you first ease onto the Bowery, you’ll be met with a soft layer of cooling gel foam. This layer cushions your body and cradles your curves. As you continue to settle into the bed, you’ll then find a layer of transitional comfort foam that provides a slow, smooth transition to the base layers.
Finally, a base of supportive 6-inch coils at the bottom of this mattress provide great responsiveness and support. This coil core prevents you from sinking too deeply into the mattress, maintaining more of an ‘on top’ of the mattress feel.
What We Like About the Bowery
- Affordable quality – The Bowery is an affordable bed-in-a-box, but that doesn’t mean that it has foregone quality materials to ensure a lower price point.
- Responsive foam – Unlike slow moving memory foam that may make you feel stuck, the Bowery’s foam layers are reactive. When combined with the coil base, the result is a high level of responsiveness that should make transitions easy for combination sleepers.
- Firmness level – This bed’s mid-range firmness level should cater to a variety of sleepers.
Our Bowery Complaints
- May not work for stomach sleepers – While this bed’s medium-firm feel should satisfy a variety of sleepers, stomach sleepers may be left wanting more in the support department. This group typically needs a firmer mattress (like something that falls closer to a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale) in order to keep the hips raised for spine alignment.
- May lack edge support – The Bowery does not have the best edge support, which may be problematic for couples or heavyweight sleepers. The sides of this mattress may buckle under pressure, so if this is a major concern for you, you may want to consider a firmer, more sturdy mattress.
- All-foam fans may be disappointed – Though the Bowery’s hybrid nature lends itself to benefits like cooling, bounciness, and support, those who love to feel enveloped by their mattress may be disappointed.
Testing the Bowery Mattress: How it Performed
To ensure that we can bring you a well-rounded evaluation of this mattress, we put the Bowery through a variety of tests. The Bowery was tested for how well it supported various sleep positions and different body types. Additionally, we tested the mattress for motion isolation, edge support, and bounce amongst others.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery is designed to support up to 950 pounds, or about 425 pounds per side, according to their website. This should be more than enough for most sleepers. However, heavyweight couples may want to invest in a mattress designed specifically for supporting larger frames. Though the Bowery can hold nearly 1,000 pounds, its construction may not be able to withstand this amount of weight over the long-term.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Those on the lighter side should enjoy the soft, pressure-relieving qualities the Bowery offers to them. However, some folks on the lighter side may feel as if they don’t sink enough, and may be better served by a softer mattress.
- Average Weight Sleepers – Most average-weight side sleepers should feel supported. Additionally, they shouldn’t feel a lot of pressure building up around their hips and shoulders.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – While some heavyweight side sleepers may find a nice combination of pressure relief and support, others may sink too deeply. This can cause spine misalignment, as well as exacerbate areas of pressure.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight back sleepers are likely to find their zen in this mattress, which provides comfortable softness and sturdy alignment for their backs.
- Average Weight Sleepers – The Bowery’s medium firmness level should suit average-weight sleepers who rest on their back extremely well.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavyweight back sleepers should find support and comfort from this bed, although some may find this mattress too soft, as the layers of foam aren’t hearty enough to support them.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lighter folks who sleep on their stomach should find that this mattress supports their hips and keeps their spine aligned.
- Average Weight Sleepers – This mattress could cause pressure to build up around the hips for some average-weight sleepers as they are likely to sink too far, too fast when sleeping on the Bowery. However, most should feel well-supported.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – This bed is probably not the best idea for heavyweight stomach sleepers. Their hips will likely easily push through the upper layers, leaving them with unsupported hips and an unaligned spine.

Made in the USA
If you want a bed with a personal touch that is also made in the U.S.A., you’ll definitely want to check out the Bowery. Each mattress is crafted on demand in Phoenix, Arizona.
Construction: What’s Inside the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery?
At 10 inches tall, the cover consists of a soft, quilted cotton that is cool and comfortable to the touch, and the open cell technology in the foam layers underneath results in increased airflow.
- The initial layer of this mattress is made up of 1-inch of gel memory foam that responds quickly to your body. This layer also helps absorb body heat, which should keep sleepers cool through the night.
- Directly below the gel foam, you’ll find a 2-inch layer of comfort foam. This cozy section of the construction helps you smoothly transition into the supportive core of the Bowery.
- The sturdy base of this mattress is made up of hundreds of 6-inch coils that are individually-encased. Not only do these coils support, they help decrease motion transfer, provide bounce, and allow air to follow more freely through the mattress.
- High-density foam is found directly under the coils, This provides added durability and helps reinforce the coils.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Your Bowery mattress will be shipped in a box after it is compressed, rolled and covered in protective plastic. Upon its arrival, move the box to your desired room, remove the top and carefully place it on the foundation of your choice. Once you remove the plastic the mattress will start to inflate. There will likely be a chemical smell, known as off-gassing, when you do this. Although this is unpleasant, it is not harmful and should dissipate fairly quickly.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Noteworthy Updates:
- The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery was once an all-foam mattress. It was recently redesigned and is now offered as a hybrid model with a layer of coils at its base.

Overall Summary
The Bowery is a solidly constructed and affordable mattress. It provides excellent bounce and responsiveness so sleepers will never feel as if they are stuck in the mattress, while its medium-firm feel should suit a variety of sleepers and positions.
Side Sleepers
4/5
Lightweight and most average-weight side sleepers should enjoy the soft, contouring foam of this mattress. However, heavyweight side sleepers may not fare as well. They will likely push through the top layers too quickly to be adequately supported.
Back Sleepers
4/5
Lightweight and most average-weight sleepers who prefer to sleep on their back should find a great combo of comfortable softness and spine-aligning support.
Stomach Sleepers
3/5
When it comes to the Bowery and stomach sleepers the experience on this mattress comes down to individual body weight. Lighter folks should find that this bed keeps their hips supported and their spine aligned. Whereas average-weight stomach sleepers may have too much pressure building up around their hips, and heavyweights are likely to feel that their hips are offered little support at all.
Combination Sleepers
4/5
This mattress offers excellent bounce which bodes very well for combination sleepers. The reactivity of this mattress means that sleepers shouldn’t have much worry about feeling stuck when they move from one position to the next. However, the overall comfort of combination sleepers, though, depends on their body weight and what their preferred positions are.
Couples
3/5
When it comes to couples, sexually-active ones will probably appreciate the bounce and ease of repositioning that this bed offers. However, the motion isolation properties are good but not superior, meaning restless partners could keep you up. Additionally, if you scoot to the edge of the bed, when co-sleeping the support in this area is a little lacking.
Heavy Sleepers
3/5
Unfortunately, due to this bed’s medium firmness level and lackluster edge support, heavier folks will probably not feel supported in any of the preferred sleeping positions. The lack of support could lead to pressure build-up and poor spinal alignment.
Lightweight Sleepers
5/5
Lighter than average sleepers are likely to find that the Bowery supports them and provides pressure-relieving comfort. The upper foam layer should contour to their body and envelope them in a soft hug, and the transition layer should allow them to gently settle into being supported by the base layer of coils.
Average Weight Sleepers
4/5
Those on the lighter side of the average-weight scale are likely to find this mattress provides adequate comfort and support. However, once weight starts ticking up from that lower end, average weight sleepers may find that the Bowery causes too much pressure build up and doesn’t support them adequately.
Overall Value
3/5
The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery is first and foremost an affordable mattress. It should serve lightweight sleepers, teenagers, and guest rooms very well. When it comes to everyday use for some average- and most heavyweight adults, the bargain price may not be enough of an incentive to buy a mattress that will likely not be supportive enough in the long term.
Our Verdict
After testing this mattress, we’ve come to the conclusion that the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery serves a purpose and a certain market very well. Given the quality materials and craftsmanship, this mattress is an exceptional bargain. Those on the lighter to average-weight end of the scale are likely to find that this bed is soft, contouring and supportive.
However, once a person’s weight starts pushing up, this mattress may not be the best choice for every night use. The Bowery does allow for repositioning with ease, but it doesn’t do the best job when it comes to motion isolation or edge support. Therefore, a lot of co-sleepers may find that there are other options that will suit more of their needs.
