Who I Recommend the Saatva HD For:
- Heavier people – The Saatva HD mattress was specifically designed with plus-size people in mind, meaning somewhere over 230 pounds.
- Hot sleepers – The Saatva HD should help keep you cool at night as it is a hybrid, constructed with a top layer of temperature-neutral latex and a bottom layer of breathable coils.
- Those looking for a firmer mattress – Out of 10, I gave this a 7 on the firmness scale. This makes it great for heavier people and average-weight back and stomach-sleepers. Still, this is a versatile firmness, and I think it should feel good in all sleeping positions, but mostly when on your back.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Saatva HD For:
- Light to average-weight side sleepers – One of the main concerns about this bed is adequate pressure relief for lightweight side sleepers. The pressure relief is there, but it’s not as forthcoming as softer memory foam options.
- Those looking for a classic memory foam feel– The Saatva HD is firm and not all that contouring; it has more of a ‘sleeping-on-top’ feel rather than an ‘in-the-bed’ feel. If you want to experience more sinkage, I recommend a traditional memory foam bed. Saatva’s new Contour5 mattress (an all-foam bed), might be a good option.
- Budget shoppers – Saatva’s HD model has a higher price point, which could be a drawback if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly mattress.
Customer Reviews of the Saatva HD Mattress
On Saatva’s site, the Saatva HD has around 140 reviews and an impressive 4.9 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva HD mattress for its exceptional support for heavier individuals, but some have mentioned that its higher price point may not fit everyone’s budget.
Testing the Saatva HD Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
In the case of specialized beds like the Saatva HD, which is geared toward plus-size sleepers, we like to make sure it’s got the performance to back up its unique design.
We use different tools and techniques to test each performance category. For example, we use a pressure map to tell if a mattress is good at relieving pressure and a seismograph app to see how well it isolates motion.
I tested the Saatva HD as an average-weight person, and Loren Bullock and Spencer Bland stepped in for lightweight and heavyweight sleepers, respectively. Spencer’s feedback was especially important it since he fits the demographic this bed is made for.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7/10
I rated this mattress as 7 out of 10 based on our firmness scale, which means we’d classify this bed as slightly firm. However, people over 230-300 pounds may not find it as firm as I did, especially since I’m an average-weight sleeper. That’s why I always say that firmness is a subjective characteristic.
How Does the Saatva HD Feel?
Testing this mattress, I noticed it feels bouncy like a traditional innerspring mattress because of its innerspring coils and a top layer of latex (a buoyant and breathable material).
I felt like I was floating atop while still getting a slightly cushioned feeling with the Euro top. It’s similar to a swanky hotel mattress.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
According to Saatva, their HD bed is designed to comfortably support up to 500 pounds per side.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | When Loren tried this bed for side sleeping, she pointed out that “adequate pressure relief is the biggest concern with this bed.” There is some relief, but it’s not as forthcoming as in softer memory foam mattresses. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | I’m the average-weight person in our group, and I experienced good cushioning beneath the hips and shoulders. I’d say this is a good option for side sleepers up to 230 pounds. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Pressure relief remains questionable even for heavy side sleepers. According to Spencer, the lumbar area is supported, so your body should remain aligned in this position. However, there’s not enough pressure relief for the hips, knees, and shoulders. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Lightweight testers on set loved the Sattva HD, especially for back sleeping. The pillow top feels inviting, cushioning the body so gently to relieve pressure in this position. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Average-weight back sleepers should experience more cushioning. The bed feels like a cloud, contouring my curves while also supporting the heaviest parts to provide even weight distribution and support. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Heavy back sleepers should feel equally comfortable on this mattress. According to Spencer, the Saatva HD does a good job of supporting the spine in a healthy posture, and there’s plenty of cushioning. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | While spine alignment was there, Loren pointed out that pressure relief would once again be in question. The hips carry the most weight in this position, and some people might prefer more cushioning for this area. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | I noticed a little bit of sinking in the lower back area, which, in my opinion, wasn’t too bad. However, I can see how this can be a problem for stomach sleepers with lower back pain. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Spencer said he likes this bed for stomach sleepers. He said, “The lumbar feels lifted and nicely supported.” |
Pressure Relief
4/5
Although some people might prefer a softer bed for their hips and shoulders, the Saatva HD mattress is an excellent choice for pressure relief, which I confirmed when I tested this bed.
We usually use a pressure map to see how much (if any) buildup there is, and, surprise, surprise, there was none with this mattress.
As you can see in the pressure map readings, it’s mostly blue with some green, which indicates there’s little to no pressure buildup.

Is the Saatva HD Good for Pain Relief?
This will depend on your body type; the heavier you are, the more pressure and pain relief you will receive from this mattress, whereas the lighter you are, the more pressure and pain it might cause you.
Back Pain | For heavier people, I think this mattress could be helpful for back pain. Your weight should feel evenly distributed across the mattress, with the top layers of foam filling in the lumbar region of your spine comfortably. The HD is also a bouncy bed, so you should be able to move around easily, avoiding exacerbating your back pain. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | Back and stomach sleepers with hip pain should find a lot of pressure and pain relief from this bed. However, if you’re a side sleeper with hip pain, you might want to find a softer mattress, especially if you’re around 110 pounds. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | Again, if you’re a heavier back or stomach sleeper, this mattress should be helpful for shoulder pain. If you sleep on your side, though, the Saatva HD’s firmer feel might be too much and could exacerbate shoulder pain, even in people who carry more weight. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
4/5
I think the Saatva HD is top-notch when it comes to supporting heavier-weight people. This is due to its construction, which includes a combination of latex, polyfoam, memory foam, and sturdy steel coils. When we test for support, we are looking at how well over heaviest areas feel lifted. This is important for spine alignment and preventing back pain.
Spencer, who also tested this bed with me, said he has bad sleep posture, and the HD makes his lumbar feel “lifted.” I, too, also felt nicely supported.
This bed contains patented spinal support technology designed to help relieve pressure on joints and support the lumbar spine.
I gave it a 4 here because this might be too much for lighter-weight sleepers, but for heavier sleepers, it’s just right.
Motion Isolation
2/5
Motion isolation is important because it can prevent you from feeling when your partner moves around at night. We test this using a seismograph app to see how much movement from one side is picked up on the other.
Unfortunately, I found this bed to be rather bouncy, as you can see in the seismograph image. See those tall spikes? Yep, that means lots of motion transfer, probably due to this mattress’s latex and innerspring components.
If you’re a light sleeper and usually sleep next to someone, you’re likely to feel each other switching positions.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
I’m a hot sleeper, and I always worry about how the mattress will manage to regulate temperature once you put sheets on it.
As I evaluated the Saatva HD’s cooling capabilities, I noticed the cover felt nice but wasn’t necessarily cooling. The temperature remained comfortable at first, probably due to latex and coils that help with airflow. After a while, I noticed a bit of heat building up around me, but I’d say that’s because of the foam pillow top.
I gave it a 4 out of 5 here because it didn’t feel as cool as advertised, but it’s generally comfortable and shouldn’t heat up too much.

Bounce
4/5
We use several methods to test for bounce. First, we use a lacrosse and weighted medicine ball, throwing them on the bed to see if they’ll bounce. We also like to jump on the bed a little, pressing into the construction to see how responsive it is. The more quickly the materials bounce back, the more bounce it has.
I thought this bed would be ‘Squish City’ due to its latex, but it’s pretty firm. This means that rolling around should be easy as the response time is almost instantaneous. The bounce is always useful for sexually active couples, but it also comes in handy for those with mobility issues.
If you need some help switching positions and getting in and out of bed, I think the Saatva HD is bouncy enough so that you don’t feel stuck. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because the latex bounces back into shape almost immediately.
Edge Support
3.5/5
Testing for edge support involves sitting near the edge of the bed and tying our shoes for a minute, which allows us to manually gauge how secure the edges feel. I also lie in this area for a minute.
The Saatva HD mattress has a reinforced perimeter, so you’re unlikely to feel like you’re rolling off the edge. However, you may notice more squishing when you sleep near the edge due to the Euro pillow top and latex layers.
I noticed I was slipping more when sitting near the edge than when I was lying in this area. For this reason, I gave it a 3.5 out of 5, thinking it may not be the best choice for those who like sitting near the perimeter a lot.
Read more about mattress edge support here.
Accessibility
5/5
This score reflects any extra special qualities that the mattress brings to the table. The Saatva HD is built specifically for heavy people, excelling at features like support, breathability, and bounce. It comes with good trial and warranty policies and even free white glove delivery, so you don’t have to struggle to set it up on your own.
This bed is sturdy and should last you a long time without developing any dents or signs of wear and tear. For these reasons, it earned a 5 out of 5 here.
Customer Service
5/5
This bed boy comes with a lengthy trial of a full year, so you can really test it out in several ways. Plus, the warranty on the Saatva HD lasts a lifetime, which is something only top brands provide.
Saatva is easy to reach, which you can do via their website or email if you have any questions regarding the construction, warranty, returns, or anything else. This all earned it a perfect score for customer service.
Performance for Couples
3.5/5
Our score for couples is based on other performance categories that are valuable to many folks sharing a bed, including overall support cooling, bounce, motion isolation, and edge support.
Unfortunately, the Saatva HD is pretty bad at isolating motion, which leads me to believe it wouldn’t be good for partners with different sleeping habits. If one of you tosses and turns, the other one is unlikely to get good sleep.
I gave it a 3.5 out of 5 for this category simply because I believe couples would generally benefit more from better motion isolation. It also lagged in edge support, which could limit how comfortably you two can spread out. However, there’s solid bounce, support, and temperature regulation, which means the Saatva HD could work for some couples, so I wouldn’t write it off entirely.

Construction: What’s Inside the Saatva HD?
The Saatva HD mattress stands 15.5 inches tall, no matter if you’re going for a Twin, Queen, or California King. The mattress has a 3-inch Euro pillow top layer made from hypoallergenic cotton, plus an organic cotton cover.
- The zoned support layer is made from bouncy Talalay latex sitting right under the Euro top. This layer has zoned support, so it’s firmer in the lumbar area and softer near the head and shoulders. Additionally, latex is naturally cooling, so this layer should help dissipate any heat.
- The comfort layer made from memory foam comes next. This material has a slower response time, so it should contour slowly as you sink into the mattress. Because this foam is underneath the latex layer, you shouldn’t sink too far into the mattress.
- The poly foam transition layer comes next. This layer is firm and serves to prevent too much sinking. On top of that, it’s meant to provide a smooth transition from softer memory foam to steel coils.
- The support layer is the last layer, featuring sturdy steel coils. These coils are designed to support sleepers of all sizes and weights and are meant to last a long time being that they’re very durable.
- The edges of the mattress are reinforced with high-density foam, which means they shouldn’t sink as much. Although I noticed some compression, the edges still hold up better than they would without the reinforcement.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
White glove delivery is included in the price of the Saatva HD. This means Saatva will deliver and set up the bed for you without any additional charge or effort on your part. They’ll also take away your old mattress and any wrappings or trash, leaving everything clean and ready for you to enjoy your new mattress.
The upside to the Saatva HD is that it isn’t delivered compressed in a box, which means you shouldn’t experience off-gassing (or that new mattress smell) with this bed.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® certified: The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
- Certified Natural Materials – The cotton in the cover is GOTS-certified, which means the cotton meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The mattress’s second layer and tufting yarn are made from GOTS-certified wool. The latex is certified by GOLS.
- Guardian™ treatment – Each Saatva HD mattress is treated with this patented, nontoxic, botanical antimicrobial treatment designed to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Saatva HD FAQs
What is the weight limit of the Saatva HD mattress?
The Saatva HD mattress has a limit of 500 pounds per side, meaning 1,000 pounds in total.
Is this mattress good for plus size (heavier?) couples?
This bed should be highly supportive for plus-size couples since it’s specially made for heavier-weight sleepers. That said, it doesn’t isolate motion as well, so if your partner tosses and turns a lot and you’re a light sleeper (or vice versa), this could be distracting.
How durable is the Saatva HD mattress?
When our team tested this bed, we all agreed it felt sturdy and durable. The stitching is done well and looks like it could handle a lot. Plus, this Saatva has quality materials in it that should stand the test of time.
Does the Saatva HD come with a warranty?
The Saatva HD mattress comes with an industry-leading lifetime warranty.
How does the Saatva HD ship?
The Saatva HD is shipped full size and delivered by free white glove delivery. Professionals bring this bed to you, and they set it up so you don’t have to.
Does the Saatva HD mattress sag?
The Saatva HD is designed to support more weight than most mattresses, and it’s reinforced along its edges and in the middle, which makes it highly unlikely to sag. Overall, I consider this mattress to be very durable and high-quality.

My Verdict of the Saatva HD Mattress
I think the Saatva HD could be a stellar mattress for people over 230 pounds who sleep in any position. This bed has been expertly designed with enhanced lumbar support and some of the highest-quality, eco-friendly materials to prevent sagging.
Saatva’s HD bed should also be great for hot sleepers and fans of firmer beds. That said, heavier people will feel this mattress is more of a “medium firm,” whereas average-weight people will feel it is “firm,” and light-weight people will feel it is “very firm.”
I would recommend this one for lightweight sleepers or average-weight side sleepers. My final score for the Saatva HD is 4 out of 5.
