If you’re after a high-quality hybrid mattress that combines pressure relief and support while giving a medium-firm feel, the Helix Midnight mattress might be the right choice. The layers of this bed are stacked to provide a versatile sleep space that should fit many people.
Helix was founded in California in 2015. The company produces a range of mattresses and designs that deliver excellent comfort and quality.
I tested this bed to determine who might benefit from the Helix Midnight the most. In this article, I’ll go further into my findings, explaining what I found when it comes to comfort, pressure relief, support, motion isolation, and more.

Who I Recommend the Helix Midnight For:
- Fans of a best-of-both-worlds hybrid design – The Helix Midnight mattress has a classic hybrid design, featuring a coil unit underneath two foam layers. This design allows for a balance of pressure relief and support that I think works for most sleeping positions.
- People with back pain – This mattress has a medium-firm feel and durable coils that should provide sufficient support to the lower back, helping to ease the pain in this area. I think the balance of comfort and support works extremely well for back sleepers.
- Average-weight people – I think that sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should find the Helix Midnight to be comfortable, especially when sleeping on their backs. Those who sleep on their stomach might, however, prefer a firmer bed.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Helix Midnight For:
- Combination sleepers – If you often switch positions at night, you might prefer another Helix model. I found that the Midnight traps you a bit in its top layer, making it a bit tricky to switch positions. I didn’t feel stuck, but I definitely noticed that the bed is slightly lacking when it comes to ease of movement. Instead, take a look at our top beds for combination sleepers.
- Heavy stomach sleepers – Stomach sleepers weighing above 230 pounds need ample support to prevent the hips from sinking in too deeply. For this reason, I think many stomach sleepers in this group might find the Helix Midnight mattress to be too soft, which could pose issues for their lower backs.
Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight Mattress
The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website based on over 7,000 reviews. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great night’s sleep and some pain relief.
Testing the Helix Midnight Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
I used Sleep Advisor’s definitive testing process to help me evaluate the Helix Midnight and see whether I think this is a good bed and who I’d recommend (and not recommend) it for. My colleagues Spencer, Julia, and Sosha also stepped in to help so we could see how the Helix Midnight worked for different body types and sleep styles.
Along with our own opinions on how it felt, we also used tools to help us get more data-driven information. We used devices like a pressure map, a seismograph app, and a temperature gun, to name a few.

Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10
Mattress firmness is about how hard or soft a mattress feels. Firmness ratings are based on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 the hardest. I think this Helix mattress is a 6 out of 10, being that it offers a true medium feel that’s not too firm or too soft. There’s a sense of overall support across the entire bed, which should make it a good option for many sleepers.
How Does the Helix Midnight Feel?
I’m lightweight, so the Midnight felt firmer in some positions, but if you’re anywhere over 130 pounds, I’m sure you experience a true medium feel.
When you first lie on it, you can feel the contouring memory foam layer under the cooling cover. The foam has a medium feel, so you should feel hugged and cradled while the coils do a good job of keeping you from sinking too far.
The cover feels cool and stretchy, which indicates it can take a lot before it shows signs of wear and tear.
Sleeping Positions and Body Types
Helix says their beds can support up to 1,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds per side.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | As a petite person, I’d say the Helix Midnight evenly distributes weight well for side sleepers in this weight group. My hips didn’t sink in more than my shoulders and vice versa. That said, there are some folks out there who may prefer something a bit softer. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds should find a good balance of pressure relief and support. My colleague, Emma, who weighs 140 pounds, had previously tested the Midnight and found this position comfortable. However, she added, “If I was sleeping on my side all night, I’d probably prefer a softer bed.” |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Heavy sleepers usually experience this mattress as softer, which makes it a good option for those who like sleeping on their sides. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Most lightweight back sleepers should like the support the Helix Midnight provides. The foams keep you aligned and allow just enough sinkage for pressure relief, while the coils keep you supported. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | When Sosha tested this mattress, she noted some slight sinkage around her hips, but she said that it was definitely not a deal breaker. She loved the contouring and support she felt around her lower back and the overall cozy feeling. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Heavyweight back sleepers should sink deeper in the first foam layer, which I think should help relieve pressure build-up. However, this might take away from the support level for those weighing over 230 pounds. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Stomach sleepers weighing under 130 pounds should feel on top of the mattress, which is excellent when it comes to keeping the spine aligned. My hips didn’t sink at all, so I think the Helix Midnight should feel comfortable for this group. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Sosha is a part-time stomach sleeper and appreciated how the Helix Midnight kept her hips elevated, keeping her spine straight and comfortable. She noted that she found the midsection support a little surprising since she felt some sinkage when she was on her back. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Heavy people who like sleeping on their stomachs might prefer a firmer mattress. They would sink too deeply into memory foam, which throws the entire body out of alignment. |
Pressure Relief
5/5
The Helix Midnight mattress has two foam layers above the coil unit. The comfort layer is made from memory foam, which is one of the best materials for pressure relief.
We used a pressure map to show weight distribution. Red and yellow indicate pressure buildup, while blue and green mean little to no pressure. Looking at the pressure map, you see it’s mostly blue and green, with some yellow in my hips while side sleeping. Since I’m a lightweight sleeper, this is to be expected since I won’t sink into the materials as much. That said, I didn’t really feel much pressure there, so it wasn’t noticeably uncomfortable. For back sleeping, though, it’s as blue as the Caribbean Sea, so I still think this is a fantastic bed for pressure relief, which is why I gave it a 5 out of 5.
Is the Helix Midnight Good for Pain Relief?
I think this bed has some great features that may help with pain relief, but it will also depend on your body type and sleep position.
Back Pain | People with back pain need a mattress that can keep the spine in alignment. I found that the Helix Midnight does this well. The medium feel should allow the spine to remain straight by preventing the hips and shoulders from sinking too far in. That being said, if you’re a heavier sleeper, you should take into account your sleep position when considering this mattress. For example, I think heavier stomach sleepers could wind up exacerbating their back pain on this mattress. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | Hip pain can grow worse if your bed is too soft or too firm. After testing the Helix Midnight, I confirm it provides a good balance of the kind of pressure relief and support that could help alleviate hip pain, though some petite side sleepers with pain in this area may enjoy something slightly softer. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | People with shoulder pain should sleep on their back to take the pressure off this area. The upside here? I think the Helix Midnight is a good mattress for back sleepers, especially those weighing 130 to 230 pounds. Plus, the memory foam should help ease discomfort. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
The Helix Midnight offers support through a combination of durable materials and a medium-firm feel. While the coil unit acts as that main support unit, the base layer underneath it gives you additional lifting and structure.
When we test for support, we look at how straight our spines are, and if there’s a lot of sinkage, that means poor support. In the case of the Helix Midnight, I gave it a 5 out of 5 since our testing team felt well-supported in multiple positions. Our spines appeared to be straight from the base of the neck to the tailbone.
Motion Isolation
5/5
Motion isolation is important for those who share their bed with a partner, child, or pet. Anyone moving in your bed can disturb your sleep, so having a mattress with sound motion isolation can help prevent this.
When we test for motion isolation, we use a seismograph app to detect motion disturbances while one of us moves around on the bed. Very little motion was detected when mimicking the normal rolling and turning that happens throughout the night. Although the seismograph reading shows bigger spikes, these only occurred when we flopped down hard or put concentrated pressure in one spot. So, this mattress still earned a 5 out of 5 because unless you’re sleeping with a wounded marlin, we don’t think you’ll experience much motion transfer on the Helix Midnight.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
5/5
Cooling is crucial for hot sleepers. The Helix Midnight is equipped with a cover that promotes cooling, while the coils below will foster that extra airflow. Additionally, you can opt for the optional GlacioTex™ cooling cover for a slightly higher price. However, I tested this without that added feature and was blown away by how well the Helix Midnight regulates temperature.
We used a temperature gun to take three readings: 1.) the initial surface temperature, 2.) the temperature after someone has been on the mattress for five minutes, and 3.) the temperature after being on the mattress for an additional five minutes. The Helix Midnight performed exceptionally well. It heated up less than 5 degrees over the course of our testing, showing that not much heat gets trapped in this mattress. This earned this mattress a 5 out of 5 on temperature regulation.
Bounce
3.5/5
Although the Helix Midnight has coils, it does lack a bit when it comes to bounce. I didn’t feel stuck in this bed, and I don’t think you’ll feel stuck either. However, movement isn’t a breeze because of the thick foam layer that makes it difficult to switch positions. The ease of movement was somewhere in between for me, but it might be even trickier if you have any mobility issues.
In addition to repositioning and rolling on the bed, our testing team used a 10-pound ball to test its bounce. The ball didn’t catch much air, but the bed regained its original shape after removing it. Although the Helix Midnight could improve some in this category, it is still above average and earned a 3.5 out of 5 for bounce.
Edge Support
2/5
Strong edge support means the mattress is going to leave you supported when you sleep or sit along the sides. This is helpful for couples so they can spread out, but it’s also a valuable feature for older adults to help them get in and out of bed. I test this by sitting at the edge for a minute tying my shoes and then lying on the edge for a minute.
I wouldn’t recommend the Midnight for seniors and people with mobility issues. The lack of edge support could make it difficult for them to get in and out of bed. If you are a senior, take a look at our list of best mattresses for elderly people.
Accessibility
4/5
The accessibility score is based on how the mattress and the manufacturer go above and beyond to set their product apart. We liked that the Helix Midnight boasts a 1,000-pound weight limit while being relatively easy to lift and move. All orders receive free shipping, and Helix offers white glove delivery and removal at an additional cost. However, this is only available in some areas.
Helix also partners with showrooms nationwide, allowing folks in those areas to check out a Helix mattress before purchasing. Additionally, financing as low as 0 percent is available to those who qualify. I deducted one point because their white glove delivery is only available in some areas. Overall, Helix does a great job at accessibility, and they got a 4 out of 5 in this category.
Customer Service
4/5
Helix offers several ways to contact customer service, including email, online chat, phone, and text. I appreciated the different ways to get in touch with them, but I found the chat tedious and clunky. The chatbot wasn’t very intuitive, and it took about five minutes to connect to a live representative. However, once I was there, she was friendly and knowledgeable.
When I called, I was stuck in a queue for a few minutes, but again, the rep was extremely helpful once I was connected. If you opt to text Helix, you have to agree to receive recurring automated promotional messages when using this service. I deducted a point due to the glitches and inconveniences in some of their systems, but I still felt that Helix was well above average.
Performance for Couples
3/5
Some couples will find the Helix Midnight to be an agreeable pick. It has tremendous motion isolation, so a restless partner will be unlikely to wake their bedmate. The medium-firmness is versatile and universally appealing. However, the lower bounce and edge support scores caused me to lower this performance category score by 2 points. Bounce can help sexually active couples reposition more easily, and edge support lets folks use the entire mattress surface.

Helix Midnight Mattress: Preference-Based Features
Two Cover Options
This bed comes with a Breathe Knit Cover included. I found this cover to be gentle on the skin and comfortable but not really effective at cooling, which is something to keep in mind if you’re a hot sleeper. For hot sleepers, the company offers an additional cover option called the GlacioTex™ pillow top.
Made in the USA
Helix mattresses are manufactured in the company’s factory in Arizona. Explore more mattresses made in the USA here.
Adjustable Base Compatible
This mattress works with different bed foundations and frames, including adjustable bed frames for those who want to customize their sleeping experience a bit more. Check out our list of expert-reviewed adjustable bases to find the right frame for you.
Luxe Upgrade Available
I think this is a budget option from Helix, offering excellent value for money. However, if you have a higher budget and want a mattress with more bells and whistles, I suggest you look at the Luxe version of the Helix Midnight mattress.
Construction: What’s Inside the Helix Midnight?
The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall and has four layers, including a Soft Touch cover and a bottom cover. You can opt for the GlacioTex™ cover if you’re a hot sleeper, as it’s a cooler option for those who sweat a lot.
The cover is stretchy, and the stitching is durable, so you shouldn’t notice any wear and tear for years. The following are the layers you can find under the cover.
- The comfort layer is made from Memory Plus Foam, which is a unique Helix design. The material is a high-density memory foam blend made to contour the body and provide a comfortable cushion for pressure relief.
- The transition layer is made from high-grade poly foam. This material offers pressure relief and ergonomic support while providing a transition layer between the memory foam and coil unit.
- The 8-inch coil unit is located below the poly foam layer. The coils are made from steel and are individually wrapped to help minimize motion transfer across the mattress. This bed has enhanced edge support lengthwise, which means the thicker-gauge coils are only added to the left and right side of the bed.
- The base layer is made from DuraDense Foam and sits at the bottom of the Helix Midnight mattress. This foam is made to provide a supportive base and durability.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Helix Midnight mattress comes rolled in a box, which makes it easy to move from your door to the bedroom. Once you have it near the bed frame, open the box and place the rolled mattress on the frame. Remove the plastic, and the bed will unroll.
As is usually the case with bed-in-a-box mattresses, it takes a while for the bed to decompress and reach its full size. The Helix Midnight should reach its full size in about 45 minutes.
When it comes to off-gassing, I noticed a slight odor when we first removed the packaging. The smell should dissipate in a week, but you can speed up the process by airing the mattress in a well-ventilated room and without any bedding.
Certifications
- CertiPUR-US® – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
- GREENGUARD Gold – This bed is also GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions.

Helix Midnight FAQs
What is the weight limit of the Helix mattress?
According to the manufacturer, Helix beds have a weight capacity of 1,000 pounds or 500 pounds per side. This makes this a great bed for heavyweight people.
What is the durability of the Helix mattress?
The materials and construction of Helix Midnight indicate that it should be a durable mattress. Using 8-inch coils, memory foam, and poly foam, I think this bed will hold up well for a long time. It also has a 1,000-pound weight capacity and a 10-year warranty, showing that the manufacturer has faith in their product.
What kind of mattress is the Helix Midnight?
The Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress that features a combination of 8-inch coils, memory foam, and poly foam in its construction. I think this hybrid construction gives a balance of support and pressure relief, along with qualities like motion isolation and responsiveness.
Where can I try out a Helix Midnight mattress?
There are two ways to try out a Helix Midnight mattress before you make it a permanent fixture in your bedroom: you can test it at home for a 100-night trial, or you can lie down on it inside one of Helix’s partner showrooms.
The 100-night trial begins after you’ve ordered your Helix Midnight. You then have 100 nights to snooze on the mattress and decide if it’s a good match for your sleep needs. If not, you can return the mattress to Helix for a full refund—they’ll even coordinate the mattress pickup for you.
As mentioned, the other option is to visit one of the brand’s partner showrooms, where certain mattress models are displayed and free to test out. Not every Helix model is available at these showrooms, but the Midnight is often featured. However, because a quick lie-down (or even a quick nap) isn’t as thorough of an experiment as actually sleeping on a mattress for multiple nights, I recommend taking advantage of the 100-night trial.
Is the Helix Midnight hot?
Although the Helix Midnight isn’t cool to the touch, it didn’t run hot during testing, highlighted by the bed’s surface temperature increasing less than five degrees even after someone had been on it for 10 minutes.
The mattress has a breathable cover, and the GlacioTex™ cooling cover can be chosen to further enhance the cool-to-the-touch feel. Although the bed isn’t cool to the touch, the upper layers are unlikely to overheat thanks to the coils that allow air to circulate.
Is the Helix Midnight too firm?
The Helix Midnight is rated 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it has a true medium feel. I think this firmness level should fit many sleepers, as it allows some sinkage to prevent pressure buildup without taking away from support.

My Verdict of the Helix Midnight
Testing the Helix Midnight mattress was all fun and games, given the balanced and comfortable feel.
The bed’s medium-firm feel should make it a good match for people with back pain, as well as average-weight sleepers in general and some lightweight and heavy folks. In addition, the Midnight has an affordable price, a long trial, and a 10-year warranty. All of the Midnight’s memory foam layers are certified as free of chemicals and toxins, so the mattress is a safer option for consumers. Overall, the Helix Midnight earned a 4.1 out of 5.
