Editor’s note: Casper has rebranded some of their mattresses, and we are working on updating our Casper Wave Hybrid review to reflect these changes.
What is the difference between the original Casper mattress and the Wave Hybrid?
Casper has converted its first Casper mattress into a luxurious version that relies on a hybrid construction instead of exclusively foam. The brand has experienced a lot of success with its all-foam beds and is excited to show customers how it has developed its premium mattress on top of a 7-inch layer of supportive coils.
Our Casper Wave Hybrid mattress review examines this bed’s unique features and evaluates them using our scoring system. We’ll discuss how the mattress performed in categories like firmness, comfort, and overall value so you can decide if it’s worth your investment.

Who We Recommend The Casper Wave Hybrid For:
- People who need spinal alignment – The innovative construction in this mattress includes zoned gel pods which help keep your spine properly aligned and supported in every sleeping position.
- Sleeper looking for optimal pressure relief – This hybrid uses a series of foams over coils to provide pressure relief. The AirScape™ foam used to make the third layer is especially adept at washing away nighttime strain.
- Combination sleepers – The combination of foam and springs makes this bed easy to move around on. Folks who switch between their back, stomach, and side should enjoy the responsiveness of this mattress.
Who We Don’t Recommend The Casper Wave Hybrid For:
- People looking for a deep hug – This hybrid should make you feel like you’re sleeping “on” the mattress rather than “in” it, which is something to keep in mind if you’re craving that deep huggable feel of memory foam. Although the Wave Hybrid has a mid-range firmness, the foams shouldn’t allow too much sinkage since the coils underneath provide support.
- Budget shoppers – Those looking for an affordable mattress option may want to look elsewhere. The Casper Wave Hybrid is a luxury mattress that comes with a higher price tag. While this bed offers excellent value, high-quality materials, and long-lasting craftsmanship, the price may be too much for those looking for a budget-friendly mattress.
First Impressions: Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 6/10
Please remember that firmness is a subjective characteristic and your shape will dictate how you experience a bed. A heavier person whose weight can more easily push through softer comfort and support layers may experience a bed as softer than a lightweight person. The way you are shaped could also play a role here. Consider your weight, shape, and size when evaluating firmness scores.
We rate mattress firmness from one to ten, and the Casper Wave Hybrid falls at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This mid-range firmness should fit most sleeping positions, depending on the sleeper’s weight. However, some heavyweight sleepers may find they need a mattress with a higher firmness level (think a 7 or 8 out of 10) since they sink into the bed more.
Generally for most sleepers, though, you should enjoy a nice balance of pressure relief and support as the foams cradle the body, but don’t allow too much sinkage that could throw the spine out of alignment. The coils underneath add even more support, which should help you maintain a healthy sleeping posture.
How Does It Feel?
The cover is made from soft, breathable material to promote airflow. With tough stitching, it should resist tearing when pulled and shouldn’t wear out quickly.
As you settle into the bed, you should feel yourself sink into a deeper cradle. You should still feel like you’re on top of the bed, but the upper comfort layers contour to your body just enough for pressure relief. The mix of foam and coils should make it easy for you to reposition and roll over.
What We Like About the Casper Wave Hybrid
- Mid-range firmness – The Casper Wave Hybrid is rated a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it has a medium-firm feel. This means the mattress may feel slightly firmer, but still not firm enough to create pressure build-up.
- Cooling features – The Casper Wave Hybrid has an inch of AirScape™ poly foam infused with cooling gel which helps draw heat away from your body. The second and third layers are also made from perforated AirScape™ where the tiny holes help facilitate airflow.
- Zoned support – The Wave Hybrid combines a 1.5-inch layer of AirScape™ with Zoned Support™ Max for firmer support in your heaviest areas such as the hips, lower back, and waist. For sleepers with back pain, this construction is a big plus since it should help with spine alignment and pressure relief.
Our Casper Wave Hybrid Complaints
- It’s not a budget choice – This model is a higher-end luxury choice that features premium materials. For a less expensive Casper experience, some may want to consider the flagship Casper or Casper Element.
- May not suit some heavyweight sleepers – While this bed has an impressive four layers of foams that include polyurethane, latex, and memory, it’s classified as a medium-firm mattress. Therefore, some heavyweight sleepers may sink into the mattress too much, potentially causing spine misalignment.
Testing the Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress: How it Performed
We tested the mattress in various positions to evaluate who would enjoy it the most. Apart from the general feel and performance, we also tested for motion isolation, edge support, responsiveness, and pressure relief to further help sleepers decide if the Casper Wave Hybrid can fit their needs.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress doesn’t have a weight limit so it should work well for a variety of sleepers. However, keep in mind the mattress may feel softer or firmer depending on the weight it’s carrying. In addition, the company suggests you pair the mattress with a durable bed foundation, a platform bed, or wooden slats at least 3 to 4 inches apart.
Side Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight side sleepers should like the mid-range firmness and zoned support that allows a bit more pressure relief in sensitive areas like the shoulders and hips. Some, however, may find it too firm and unable to deliver a true hugging sensation.
- Average-weight Sleepers – Average-weight side sleepers should get a nice combination of pressure relief and support. These folks should feel their weight evenly distributed across the mattress.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Side sleepers above 230 pounds may sink a bit more, which can throw the spine out of alignment. They’re unlikely to bottom out to the coils, but most may find they prefer a firmer mattress for more support.
Back Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Back sleepers under 130 pounds should feel like they’re sleeping on top of this mattress, receiving excellent support and spine alignment.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Average-weight back sleepers should sink more, but the firmer feel of this bed helps keep them “on” it more than “in” it. In addition, Zoned Support™ Max maintains spine alignment to prevent pressure building on the lower back.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers should also benefit from the bed’s zoned support, although they may find this mattress feels a bit softer. This can cause the hips to sag which may throw the spine out of alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
- Lightweight Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should experience this mattress as firmer, which is excellent when it comes to supporting the hips from sinking too deeply into the upper foam layers.
- Average-Weight Sleepers – Stomach sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds should feel the Zoned Support™ Max and coils maintain neutral spine alignment. However, those closer to 230 pounds may want a firmer mattress for greater support.
- Heavyweight Sleepers – Heavy stomach sleepers might find the Casper Wave Hybrid is too soft to support their hips and shoulders. However, the bed doesn’t offer much sinkage, to begin with, so some stomach sleepers may find it supportive enough.
Pressure Relief & Pain
While memory foam is typically the best material for pressure relief, it’s often too hot, slow responding, and sometimes causes you to sink in too deeply. That’s where the Wave Hybrid excels.
With three layers of AirScape™ foam and memory foam, sleepers can relieve the pressure on their shoulders and backs without sacrificing other comfort elements. These foams should contour to your body shape, allowing you to feel a gentle cradle in the bed without causing you to overheat or get stuck.
Back Pain – People with back pain should like how the Casper Wave Hybrid feels thanks to the zoned support. The bed doesn’t allow the hips to sink too deeply, so you should achieve a healthy sleep posture along with pressure relief.
Hip Pain – Hip pain can make it difficult to fall asleep, so it’s best to try and sleep on your back. The Casper Wave Hybrid helps relieve some of that tension by contouring around this area and keeping it aligned with the rest of the body.
Shoulder Pain – Sleepers struggling with shoulder pain should like how the Casper Wave Hybrid distributes their weight evenly across the surface, so no pressure should build up in the shoulder area.
Best Beds for Pain:
Support
Spine alignment is essential for helping to prevent chronic back and neck pain, and support is most important when it comes to achieving optimal spinal alignment. Even the best pressure-relieving elements need a good base to keep sleepers from bottoming out. The Zoned Support™ helps ensure the hips don’t sag, while providing softer support around the shoulders and chest so that these areas can sink a little more.
Beneath this targeted support layer lies a bed of coils, which also helps to keep the spine aligned. This method of creating a firmer center and softer outside helps to keep the spine straight in every sleeping position, making it a fantastic versatile option.
Motion Transfer
The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress features four foam layers above the coil unit, which gives it excellent motion-isolating capabilities. All-foam beds are typically better at isolating motion, but these four layers of foam help dampen movement so that you shouldn’t feel your partner’s tossing and turning. This makes the Wave Hybrid a good option for couples and people who share their beds with kids or pets.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
Hot sleepers usually have trouble falling asleep on anything other than a cooling mattress. The Casper Wave Hybrid combines perforated foam with coils to promote continuous airflow. In addition, the first layer of AirScape™ has a thin layer of cooling gel that helps prevent overheating by pulling your body heat away from the bed’s surface.
Performance for Couples
Couples should like how the coils bounce back against their movements, making it easy to move around the bed. The responsiveness is excellent for sexually-active couples, while its motion-isolating capabilities make it a good option for those with different sleep schedules. There’s also sufficient cooling to keep partners from overheating.

Preference-based Features
Bed-in-a-box
This bed comes compressed in a box for easy handling. The Queen size weighs 111 pounds, so we recommend recruiting a friend to help you move the mattress.
Exceptional Edge Support
The mattress’ perimeter is surrounded by a firm border for reinforced edge support, which should allow you to use the entire surface area. This is particularly beneficial for couples who need extra sleep space.
Adjustable Base Compatible
The Wave Hybrid is adjustable-base compatible for those who prefer a more customized sleeping experience. Casper makes their own adjustable bases if you’d prefer to buy all of your mattress materials in one fell swoop.
Construction: What’s Inside the Casper Wave Hybrid?
The Casper Wave Hybrid features a luxurious cover made of recycled polyester, upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra.
This bed stands 13 inches tall. Beneath the cover, there are five layers designed for comfort and proper ergonomic alignment.
- Below the cover is 1 inch of Casper’s AirScape™ poly foam, which includes a thin layer of cooling gel. The perforated structure helps to keep sleepers cool throughout the night and promotes pressure relief.
- The second layer is another 1.5 inches of perforated AirScape™ latex foam. Slightly firmer than the top layer, it helps relieve pressure points and improves the surface’s response time.
- The middle layer is an additional 1.5 inches of AirScape™ memory foam that’s designed to contour to your body. This foam includes three areas of Zoned Support™ Max, which promotes spine alignment by providing firmer support in heavier areas, including the hips, waist, and lower back.
- The fourth layer is 1.5 inches of poly foam that continues to help keep your spine well-aligned. This layer includes gel pods underneath the waist and the lower back, along with Zoned Support™ Max designed to support the areas where you need it most.
- The base layer is a 7-inch foundation of durable pocket coil springs. This layer functions as the support center for the bed, and the coils should provide more airflow as well.
- The perimeter features a firm foam encasement to enhance edge support.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The Casper Wave Hybrid comes compressed in a box, so it should be relatively easy to move from your door to the bedroom. However, keep in mind the box can be heavy, depending on the mattress size you choose. For example, the King size weighs 145 pounds, so you may want a friend or a family member to lend you a helping hand. If not, you can always pay 199 dollars for White Glove Delivery.
Once you have the box on your foundation of choice, you can remove the packaging to allow the mattress to decompress. People over at Casper say the mattress should be ready within minutes, but you may want to allow it a few hours to ensure it expanded to its full size. You may also notice some off-gassing, which is common for bed-in-a-box mattresses. However, the smell should dissipate within hours.
Certifications
- Eco-friendly certifications – This product was certified by OEKO-TEX®, which evaluates textiles at all processing levels for acceptable levels of hazardous chemicals and flame retardants. On top of that, the foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Coupons, Trials, Warranties, and Shipping
- Shipping – The Casper Wave Hybrid ships free to your door within the continental U.S. and most of Canada. For a charge, shipping is also available to Hawaii, Alaska, and Northern Canada.
- White Glove Delivery – White Glove Delivery is available in contiguous US states and some parts of Canada. The service costs additional 199 dollars and includes the setup of your new mattress and removal of the old one if you no longer need it.

- Return Policy – Returns are free and easy, but you can only get a refund if you return the mattress within the trial period.

Overall Summary
The Casper Wave Hybrid is a luxurious version of its predecessor that incorporates a coil base, gel-infused foam, and zoned support. It’s a premium choice for sleepers who want a mattress that offers bounce, durability, and reinforced support.
Side Sleepers
4/5
Side sleepers sometimes complain about strain in their hips and shoulders. The zoned support in this bed helps cushion and support these areas, while the upper layers allow just enough sinkage for pressure relief. However, this bed is on the firmer side, so some side sleepers may want a softer model.
Back Sleepers
5/5
This model was designed for optimal spinal alignment in the back-sleeping position, from its zoned support to higher firmness level. Most back sleepers should experience pressure relief that lets them slip into a deep cradle, while the coils help keep the back in proper alignment.
Stomach Sleepers
4/5
Most stomach sleepers prefer a firmer bed to keep their back supported as they rest. The Wave Hybrid should provide plenty of support for most stomach sleepers since the coils and foam help keep the hips raised and spine aligned. However, heavier stomach sleepers may want a firmer mattress.
Combination Sleepers
5/5
This bed sits at the crossroads of quick response, motion isolation, and targeted support. These three elements mean it should be easy to reposition without waking your partner., and each sleeping position is well supported. We’d highly recommend it for combo sleepers.
Couples
4/5
With great motion isolation and support for virtually every sleeping position, there shouldn’t need to be a compromise when it comes to this bed’s place in your relationship. The foam and gels should help keep you cool, while this bed’s responsiveness makes it easy to move around.
Heavy Sleepers
4/5
Most heavyweight sleepers should feel supported on this mattress. The coils provide reinforced support, while the targeted support from the foams helps provide even more stability. However, this bed does fall at a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale so some heavyweight sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress.
Lightweight Sleepers
5/5
The Wave Hybrid should work well for most lightweight sleepers. Its upper comfort layers allow lightweight sleepers to sink just enough. With a medium-firm feel, this bed should be just right for most sleepers.
Average Weight Sleepers
5/5
Average-weight sleepers who like sleeping “on” a mattress more than “in” it should enjoy the gentle cradle the Casper Wave Hybrid mattress provides. The bed’s upper foam layers relieve pressure in sensitive areas while the coils provide the support needed for proper spine alignment.
Overall Value
4/5
Casper is a trusted name in the mattress industry for a reason – they create high-quality beds that meet a variety of sleeper’s needs. The Wave Hybrid is a luxury mattress with a luxury price tag, although it does offer a ton of value with its zoned support, enhanced cooling features, and multiple comfort foam layers.
Our Verdict
The Casper Wave Hybrid is a luxury mattress that delivers a luxurious sleeping experience. The quality is noticeable when you remove it from its packaging, from the sturdy design to the premium stitching and durability. This bed’s medium-firm feel should fit most people, plus its excellent motion isolation, edge support, and cooling makes it a great option for couples.
The zoned support and foam comfort layers also work well for people with back pain. However, those on a budget, as well as those who want a super firm or soft mattress probably aren’t the best match for this mattress.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Firmness is the Casper Wave Hybrid?
We rated the Casper Wave Hybrid mattress a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, which means it has a medium-firm feel. The bed feels a bit on the firmer side but should fit most side, back sleepers, and some stomach sleepers.
Does the Casper Wave Hybrid Sleep Hot?
The Casper Wave Hybrid features a combination of coils and perforated AirScape™ foam, allowing continuous airflow throughout the mattress. In addition, it has a gel layer under the first foam layer and gel pods in the poly foam to ensure the construction remains cool.
Can You Flip the Casper Wave Hybrid?
The Casper Wave Hybrid isn’t a double sided mattress, so you should avoid flipping it as that can change how the bed performs. When flipped, the coils come up and the foam layers go under, which is a change that can affect the mattress’s firmness, comfort level, and overall performance. However, you can always rotate the bed to ensure that it wears out evenly.
