A comfortable mattress called the Plank? The bed’s name might initially give you pause, but trust me, Brooklyn Bedding is onto something here.
Inspired by cultural traditions of sleeping on firm pads or tatami mats, the Plank Firm mattress serves as a thicker alternative that doesn’t go right on your floor but still feels very level and supportive. This bed is also flippable, with both sides having a firmer feel, so the name makes perfect sense. This all-foam mattress should appeal to the heaviest sleepers, but other weight groups might also find it comfortable in certain positions.
I tested both sides alongside my colleagues to see how this mattress performs for sleepers of all body types. I’ll share our findings and touch base on other details like temperature regulation, pressure relief, motion isolation, and more.

Who I Recommend the Plank Firm For:
- Back and stomach combination sleepers – This is one of the bounciest mattresses I’ve tested in a while, so switching positions is a breeze. However, I’d recommend it for back and stomach combination sleepers only since it’s a tad too firm for side sleeping.
- Heavyweight sleepers – Heavy people often benefit more from firmer beds, so why not get two in one? Depending on their preferred sleeping positions, both sides of the Plank mattress should appeal to heavyweight sleepers.
- Couples – Even without perfect motion isolation, the Plank mattress has a high enough weight capacity for two people, and it scores highly in other categories, such as responsiveness, edge support, and temperature regulation, all of which are important for couples.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Plank Firm For:
- Sleepers who want more cradling – The Plank Firm doesn’t have much cushioning to cradle your curves like a soft mattress would. Either side won’t let you sink too much, so you’ll feel more “on top” of the bed than “in” it.
- People with sensitive joints – The Firm side of this bed is a bit more cushiony, but this might not be enough for people with sensitive shoulders, hips, or knees. The Extra-Firm side is a no-go for pressure relief.
Customer Reviews of the Plank Firm Mattress
On Plank’s website, the Plank Firm has 4.7 out of 5 stars from over 3,200 reviews. Customers appreciate this mattress for its exceptional firmness, but some have found it too rigid for their comfort preferences.
Testing The Plank Firm Mattress
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
I tested both sides of the Plank Firm mattress, focusing on how it feels in different sleeping positions, as well as how it performs in categories like cooling, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, and more. I’m average-weight, and my teammates Loren Bullock, and Spencer Bland stepped in to test for lightweight and heavyweight sleepers, respectively.
During this process, we used different tools and methods to evaluate who this bed is best for. For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7/10 (Firm), 8.5/10 (Extra-Firm)
When I tested the Plank mattress, I made sure to try out both sides of this flippable bed. One is a true firm, falling at a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, whereas the other side felt extra-firm at 8.5 out of 10.
The mattress’s flippability makes it even more versatile, as you’re actually getting two beds in one. However, both sides are on the firmer end of the scale, which is something to keep in mind if you’re after a soft or medium firmness.
I’ve created the chart below to help you match your sleeping position to the ideal Plank mattress firmness option.
SLEEPING POSITION | BEST PLANK FIRMNESS OPTION |
Side Sleeper | Firm |
Back Sleeper | Firm |
Stomach Sleeper | Firm or Extra-Firm |
Combination Sleeper | Firm or Extra-Firm |
How Does The Plank Firm Mattress Feel?
It’s aptly named; the Plank mattress feels like one of the firmest beds out there, especially the Extra Firm side. There’s very little cushioning, but the spine alignment and weight distribution are excellent with this one.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Plank Firm mattress can support up to 950 pounds.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | When Loren tested this bed as a lightweight sleeper, she pointed out that it felt firm yet pillowy. She said she felt no pressure buildup, but the mattress was still undeniably firm. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | I tested the Plank for average-weight people, and the Firm side felt surprisingly good for pressure relief. The Extra-Firm side is a no for me, as it felt too rigid around my shoulders and hips. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Spencer said the Firm side was more cushiony for side sleeping, adding that he had good spine alignment. He said the Extra-Firm side was not comfortable for him as a heavy sleeper. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Back sleepers typically enjoy firmer beds, but as Loren said, the Plank might be too firm for lightweight sleepers. “It feels like the floor, and I need more cushion from my mattress than that.” The Firm side offers more cushioning, filling in the gap beneath the lower back. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | The Extra-Firm side felt too rigid around my shoulders and hips, while the Firm gave more cushioning for these areas. I agree with Loren that the Firm side fills the gap under the lower back much better, which is crucial for back sleepers. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Spencer noticed the Plank mattress is quite similar to the Plank Firm Luxe when it comes to back sleeping for heavy sleepers. Both beds do a good job of keeping the spine aligned and distributing the weight evenly to prevent any awkward dips around the lower back and hips. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | On the Firm side, Loren said, “This is my ideal stomach sleeping mattress.” However, she experienced too much pressure around the chest when trying the Extra-Firm side, which is why I wouldn’t recommend it for lightweight people with fuller busts who sleep on their stomachs. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | Surprisingly, I felt more pressure buildup on the Firm side than the Extra-Firm. The Extra-Firm didn’t feel abrasive on my pressure points, even without the cushioning. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | According to Spencer, spinal alignment was on point on either side. However, the Extra-Firm felt like sleeping on the floor, which might be too much for some folks. |
Pressure Relief
3.5/5
Loren, Spencer, and I agreed that this mattress lacks some cushioning that would likely provide more pressure relief. The Firm side felt fine on my pressure points when lying on my side, but I can’t guarantee this would be comfortable for everyone.
For this reason, we wouldn’t recommend it for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers. If you don’t fall into these categories, I suggest playing around with the mattress and flipping it to find what works best for your pressure points.

Is the Plank Firm Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
It’s hard to tell if the Plank Firm mattress would be good for pain relief since it’s so firm on either side. I’d say this depends on the kind of pain you’re struggling with, but for the most part, I think people would prefer more cushioning. However, some people with back pain get relief when they sleep on the floor, so in that case, the Plank can help recreate that experience without having to actually lie on the floor.
Back Pain | In my opinion, people with back pain should like the Plank Firm for good weight distribution and spinal alignment. I think the Firm side is more suitable because it fills the gap around the lower back better than the Extra-Firm side. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | I don’t think this mattress is a good option for hip pain since it’s too firm on either side. I’m average-weight, and it wasn’t the most comfortable around my hips, regardless of the sleep position. I think people with hip pain would benefit more from a softer mattress. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | As with hip pain, I don’t think the Plank Firm’s going to cut it for those with pain in their shoulders. If I had shoulder pain, I’d prefer something with more cushioning to relieve pressure in this area. The Extra-Firm side, in particular, felt too hard around my shoulders. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
Support is where it’s at with the Plank Firm mattress. This bed is packed with firm foam that does an excellent job of supporting your body in near-perfect alignment.
When my colleagues and I tested the Plank Firm mattress, we experienced stellar spine alignment and weight distribution. Although folks over 230 pounds can have a hard time finding a mattress that supports them well, they should be pleased with this one.
Motion Isolation
3.5/5
Motion isolation is particularly important for couples, especially those with different sleeping styles and habits. Unfortunately, the Plank Firm left a bit to be desired. Our seismograph test showed that the motion isolation was a solid C student, as it performed neither excellently nor below average.
The taller spikes you see are big movements, while the smaller waves are smaller ones. The foam is so firm that it can’t absorb much movement, so you’ll probably feel most of it to some degree.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
At Sleep Advisor, we test temperature regulation with a heat gun, first measuring the initial surface temperature. After five and 10 minutes of lying on the bed, we measure the temperature again.
I tested the Firm side of the Plank for cooling. The starting temperature was 70.1 degrees, and it went up to 80 degrees after five minutes of lying on it. After another five minutes, the temperature went up to 81.5 degrees, which isn’t a massive jump, so it earned a 4 here.
I expect the Extra-Firm side is likely even better at temperature regulation because it doesn’t have the additional padding.
Bounce
4/5
I tested for bounce using a lacrosse ball and a weighted medicine ball. I also jumped on the bed to gauge how quickly the mattress bounced back into shape.
I rated the Plank Firm mattress 4 out of 5 because it’s bouncy for an all-foam bed. It’s not as springy as most hybrid or innerspring models, but it’s quite responsive for an all-foam mattress, especially given its firmness.
Edge Support
5/5
Edge support is crucial for many people, particularly couples and single individuals, who like spreading across the entire bed. Good edge support can also help people with mobility issues get in and out of bed more easily. To test this, I sat on the edge of the bed for a minute to tie my shoes. I then lay on the bed for another minute.
I’m pleased to report the Plank Firm is on top of its game with edge support. The firmer foam kept the perimeter from dipping, regardless of whether I was sitting or lying down in this area. It’s 5 out of 5 from me!
Accessibility
4/5
The Plank Firm mattress delivers two beds in one, which is great for people who can’t decide on a single mattress firmness. This bed’s flippable design is a unique attribute, making it one of Brooklyn Bedding’s most versatile models. It also comes in unique sizes, such as short full and Olympic queen.
But there’s a drawback I want to point out. It doesn’t have handles, which is inconvenient for a flippable mattress. This thing is heavy, weighing 60 to 105 pounds, so handles would’ve been nice to make it easier to flip. Oh, and the GlacioTex™ cover is around $100 extra should you need more cooling.
Customer Service
4/5
I gave customer service a 4 out of 5 because representatives are easy to contact. You can email or call them, and there’s a chat assistant available on the brand’s website. Everything seems pretty straightforward, so why didn’t I give it a 5? There’s a fee for returning the mattress, which I think is a bit of a drawback.
Performance for Couples
4/5
Couples who like a firm sleeping surface should appreciate this bed. Although the motion isolation might not be the best, I gave this bed a 4 out of 5 for couples because it has enough bounce, edge support, and support overall.
You should be happy with the Plank Firm mattress if you and your partner have similar sleeping styles and habits. The slight motion transfer might not be important for everyone, so I’ll let you be the judge here.

Preference-Based Features
Multiple Firmness Options
Firm or firmer? Brooklyn Bedding offers this flippable design so you can explore just how sturdy you want your bed to be. You can test it out for a week or two on the firmest side, then flip it over if you need more cradling.
Bed-in-a-Box
The Plank Firm ships directly to your door, rolled and compressed in a box via contactless delivery. This allows you to set the mattress up when it’s convenient for you, though the company recommends unboxing it within the first three weeks to reduce the risk of a slow expansion time).

Adjustable Base Compatible
You can use the Plank on a variety of foundations, including slats or platforms, and even an adjustable base if you’d prefer. The brand manufactures its own line of foundations and adjustable bases if you wish to simplify your shopping experience even further. For additional bed frame options, see our list of the best adjustable bases.
Construction: What’s Inside the Plank Firm Mattress?
The Plank Firm is a dual-sided mattress. The cover is made out of cotton, and it’s securely quilted with continuous stitching to avoid unwanted loft. For an extra charge, you can add a cooling cover that uses phase-change technology to help regulate the surface temperature.
In total, the Plank mattress stands 10.25 inches high with optional GlacioTex™ covers on both sides and 9.5 inches without the covers. This description will focus on the mattress without the cooling covers, starting with the Firm side up.
- The .75-inch quilted top has track-and-jump stitching and minimal loft to provide a firm feel.
- Below the quilted top is a 2-inch Supreme Response Comfort Foam. This foam unit is designed to remain firm but still offer some contouring for the sleeper.
- The second foam layer is 6 inches thick. This dense foam base serves as the bed’s primary source of durability, support, and stability.
- The bottom is an additional .75-inch quilted pillow top, which can be flipped and used as the mattress’s surface if you want a firmer feel.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
The unboxing process is pretty standard and takes very little effort and time. Nonetheless, I suggest you have a helping hand. One person should hold the box while the other person pulls the mattress out. Cut the plastic wrapping for the bed unroll and come to full size. The entire process should take only a few minutes, but it might take several hours for the bed to inflate fully.
Off-gassing is common for all-foam beds, so don’t be surprised if you smell a strong odor upon opening the packaging. The odor is harmless, but it might be too strong for some, so avoid sleeping on the mattress before it vents. It should only take a few hours for off-gassing odors to evaporate.
Certifications
- Eco-Friendly Certifications – The foams in this bed are CertiPUR-US® certified. CertiPUR-US® is a third-party program that ensures the foams meet rigorous health and safety standards. This means they don’t contain harmful substances like ozone depleters, PBDEs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates. They should also have low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Plank Firm Mattress FAQs
Where can I try a Plank mattress?
In my opinion, the best place to try a Plank mattress is your home. The mattress comes with a trial, so you can test the bed in the comfort of your bedroom. By trying it out at home, you can sleep on both sides and determine which level of firmness you prefer. Showrooms are also available throughout the USA, including Arizona, Ohio, and California, among others.
Which side of the Plank mattress is harder?
The Extra-Firm side is harder because it lacks the extra padding you can see on the Firm side. This side is more suitable for heavier people and those who prefer sleeping on an unusually firm bed.
Do Plank Firm mattresses have fiberglass?
The Plank Firm mattress doesn’t have any fiberglass. Instead, Brooklyn Bedding uses fire retardant socks, a fabric made of unique, non-woven silica, rayon, polyester, and cotton.

My Verdict of the Plank Firm Mattress
Testing Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank Firm mattress was an interesting experience because I don’t often come across such a firm bed. On top of that, it’s flippable but not having handles made flipping it that much harder.
Overall, I think this mattress is worth the shot, especially if you’re over 230 pounds. It should also be good for those looking for good spine alignment because there’s little to no dipping in this bed. The biggest drawbacks are the lack of motion isolation and pressure relief, but it has a lot of other great attributes, plus a long enough trial to test it for yourself. Overall, the Plank Firm earned a 4.1 out of 5.
