Avocado is a popular health food, but did you know there’s also an avocado for sleeping? I’m talking about the Avocado Green mattress, one of the greenest mattress options out there.
The Avocado Green combines an innerspring unit with latex that should appeal to eco-conscious shoppers looking for something supportive and luxurious. I had a chance to test this bed with my teammates Loren and Corey, and I will cover our findings in my in-depth Avocado mattress review.

Who I Recommend the Avocado Green For:
- Stomach sleepers – As a dedicated stomach sleeper, I love this mattress. I experienced the right balance of pressure relief around my chest and support in all areas to maintain a healthy spine alignment.
- Combination sleepers – I think the Avocado Green offers enough support and responsiveness for combination sleepers to switch positions easily.
- Couples – This mattress has most of what couples need, including a high weight capacity, bounce, and edge support. Its motion-isolating capabilities disappoint a little, but the good outweighs the bad here.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Avocado Green For:
- Lightweight side sleepers – Based on Loren’s findings, I don’t think the Avocado Green is the best choice for side sleepers weighing under 130 pounds. She experienced some pressure in her shoulder in this position. Instead, petite side sleepers should take a look at our list of great mattresses for lightweight people for more selections.
- People who wake up easily – This Avocado mattress is lackluster at isolating motion, so if you generally wake up easily, it might not be for you if you share a bed with a restless sleeper. In this case, a memory foam mattress might work better.
Customer Reviews of the Avocado Green
The Avocado Green scores 4.6 out of 5 stars on the Avocado site with over 18,000 reviews. Among the reviews, customers appreciate the Avocado Green for its eco-friendly and organic materials. Those who didn’t like it found it to be on the firmer side, which may not suit those seeking a softer feel.
Testing the Avocado Green
Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology
For testing the Avocado Green mattress, I had some help from Loren, who stepped in for lightweight people, and Corey, who stepped in to test for heavyweight people.
We each tried out this mattress in multiple positions to evaluate support and pressure relief. We also looked at bounce, motion isolation, edge support, and cooling using tools and methods like a seismograph app and temperature gun, to name a few.
For more on our testing methodology, visit our product review process page.
Firmness & Feel
Firmness Scale: 7/10
We rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. I’d say the Avocado Green feels slightly firmer than a true medium-firm, falling at a 7 out of 10.
You also have the option to add a pillow top or box top if you prefer a softer, more plush feel. According to Avocado, the pillow top version should feel like a medium-firm 6 out of 10, while the box top version should feel like a very plush 4 out of 10.
I’ve created the chart below to help you match your sleeping position to the ideal Avocado Green firmness option.
SLEEPING POSITION | BEST AVOCADO GREEN FIRMNESS OPTION |
Side Sleeper | Box Top or Pillow Top |
Back Sleeper | Pillow Top or Standard |
Stomach Sleeper | Standard |
Combination Sleeper | Pillow Top or Standard |
How Does The Avocado Green Feel?
Despite its firmness, the Avocado Green is not abrasive or rigid on pressure points. I felt my weight evenly distributed, and there was a little sink in the upper latex layer, which helped with pressure relief. It feels bouncy, too, which makes it easy to switch positions.
Sleeping Positions for Different Body Types
The Avocado Green can handle up to 700 pounds.
Side Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | Loren said she experienced a little pressure around her shoulder while lying on her side, but overall, her weight was evenly distributed in this position. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | My spine was held in a straight line even though my shoulders and hips sank a little. I love a firmer bed, so I didn’t mind that the latex here doesn’t sink as much as a soft memory foam bed. However, be wary if you have joint issues. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Corey explained that his hips, knees, shoulders, and elbows were sinking equally, so his body was always in alignment. There was no pressure buildup. |
Back Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | When testing it for back sleeping, Loren called the Avocado Green a “nice mix of cushion and support.” She pointed out that her body stayed lifted and the foam contoured her lower back. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | I felt lifted and supported, but I would have liked a bit more cushioning around my hips. The mattress adjusts to fill the gap between my lower back and the bed, but it didn’t really feel like that gap was filled. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | According to Corey, his spine alignment was great in this position even though his shoulders sank deeper than his hips. Overall, he said he felt supported by the Avocado Green. |
Stomach Sleepers
Body Type | Weight Range | Tester Feedback |
Lightweight Sleepers | Less than 130 pounds | As for stomach sleepers, I think those under 130 pounds will love the Avocado Green. Based on what Loren found, lightweight stomach sleepers should experience a balanced feel and good spine alignment. |
Average-Weight Sleepers | 130-230 pounds | I love this mattress for stomach sleeping because it feels firm and supportive. My hips sank very little, which helped prevent pressure in my lower back. |
Heavyweight Sleepers | More than 230 pounds | Corey had an equally great experience on his stomach. His hips were elevated, and his spine was perfectly aligned. |
Pressure Relief
4/5
The team was generally happy with pressure relief, except maybe Loren, who experienced a little buildup in her shoulder when she tried the Avocado for side sleeping.
The latex in this mattress allows a bit of sinking. While it doesn’t give a ton of cushioning, it seems to be just enough to prevent pressure buildup for most sleepers.

Is the Avocado Green Mattress Good for Pain Relief?
Whether the Avocado Green mattress is good for pain relief depends on the pain you’re dealing with. This bed has a firmer feel, which can be a bit too much if you’re a side sleeper with achy joints. Pressure buildup shouldn’t be an issue, but people sleeping with pain might need more cushioning in certain positions.
Back Pain | Across the team, we experienced excellent support, which can help with alignment to hopefully ease back pain. Read more about mattresses for back pain here. |
Hip Pain | People with hip pain usually need more cushioning, so I see how people with hip pain might want something more soft than the Avocado Green. Read more about mattresses for hip pain here. |
Shoulder Pain | Based on Loren’s findings, lightweight people with shoulder pain may want something softer for more pressure relief in the shoulders. Average-weight and heavyweight groups should like the Avocado Green, but I suggest you avoid sleeping on your side. Explore more mattresses for shoulder pain here. |
Support
5/5
When evaluating a mattress’s support, my colleagues and I lie on our sides, backs, and stomachs to gauge how much we sink and how aligned our spines feel.
The Avocado Green has a sturdy support system made up of 8-inch coils that are individually pocketed to move separately. It earned a perfect 5 out of 5 for support. I gave it a 5 here because Loren, Corey, and I all felt well-supported on the Avocado, which isn’t always the case when we test beds. We had little to no sagging and good spinal alignment.
Motion Isolation
2.5/5
When we evaluate motion isolation, this means we look at how well movement remains in its origin point, which is a big plus for couples, especially if one of them moves around a lot. I used a seismograph app to monitor motion disturbances. Big waves on the readout mean more motion transfer, and the small waves mean better motion isolation. We also manually tested this by having one person move around while the other person lies next to them to see how it feels.
Unfortunately, the Avocado’s motion isolation was a letdown with all the latex and coils. These materials are very bouncy and responsive, which can mean more motion transfer. Looking at the seismograph reading, you can see the movement getting picked up big time.
Temperature Regulation / Cooling
4/5
Trying to sleep when you’re all hot and sweaty is no easy feat, which is why we always make it a point to test how well a bed keeps cool when you use it. I used a heat gun to formally test temperature changes on the Avocado. First, I took its initial surface temperature, which was 70.8 degrees. After five minutes of lying on the bed, the temperature went up to 80.8 degrees, only to fall to 80.2 after another five minutes of lying on the bed.
I gave the Avocado Green a 4 out of 5 because the spike in temperature was only 10 degrees, and it started cooling the longer I was lying.
Bounce
5/5
Why is bounce important? Well, let’s say you and your partner are having sex. The last thing you probably want is to awkwardly feel stuck while trying to reposition. A bouncy, quick-responding bed can make things more seamless. The same goes for if you have limited mobility or are a combination sleeper.
The Avocado paired three layers of latex with 1,495 individually wrapped coils (in a King), and the end result is perfect bounce.
I jumped on the bed and used a lacrosse ball and a weighted medicine ball to see how quickly it bounced back into shape. It took seconds for the layers to spring back, all while supporting me non-stop.
Edge Support
5/5
The Avocado received another 5 out of 5 for its edge support. I check edge support by sitting and lying near the edge of the bed for a minute each.
I found great edge support with very little sink while sitting at the edge of the bed and even less when lying in this area. It’s the Saatva kind of edge support, which is pretty impressive since the Avocado Green has one coil system instead of two, as is the case with the Saatva Classic.
Accessibility
5/5
Our accessibility score focuses on all the ways the mattress and brand stand out. In the case of the Avocado, it has so many exceptional qualities I had to give it a 5 out of 5 here.
To start, this eco-friendly mattress is as green as it gets, hence the name. It’s made from organic materials such as cotton, wool, and latex and has multiple certifications such as GOLS and GOTS. On top of that, Avocado sells this mattress without wool for those who want a completely vegan bed.
The company included a one-year trial and a 10-year warranty. I also really liked that it has handles because it makes it easier to move around, given how heavy it is.
Customer Service
4/5
Shipping is free within the continental USA, and so are returns. However, I didn’t like the chatbot on the brand’s website. I tried asking about the weight capacity of this bed, and it kept talking about different things that had nothing to do with my question. There’s an option to send your question to their team, or you can reach them by phone since the online bot is a little tricky to work with. For this reason, the Avocado lost a point here.
Performance for Couples
4/5
There are specific qualities that couples can benefit most from in a mattress, including bounce, edge support, overall support, motion isolation, universal firmness, and sufficient weight capacity. With this in mind, I always consider these elements when evaluating whether a mattress is good for co-sleepers.
In the case of the Avocado Green, the mattress scored highly in all categories except motion isolation, which is why I gave it a 4 out of 5 for couples. In the end, it’s up to you to think about how much you care for motion isolation. If your partner doesn’t move a whole lot when they sleep, then this probably isn’t a dealbreaker.
How Durable Is the Avocado Green?
The Avocado Green has a lot going for it in terms of durability. Most notably, it’s a latex hybrid that’s made with good-quality materials, and latex beds are some of the longest-lasting mattresses out there, with some reaching a lifespan of up to 15 years!
According to the Avocado brand, this mattress is made to last 25 years. While I can’t verify that myself, I can confidently say it’s a well-made mattress that I think you’ll get a lot of long-term value out of.

Preference-Based Features
Euro Top
You have the option to add a Euro top, which provides an additional 2 inches of plush organic latex for added pressure relief and eco-luxury. The box top adds 3 inches of the same material.
Vegan Option
For those who prefer a vegan bed, the company offers a mattress without wool. This model has a non-woven backing acting as a natural fire barrier instead of wool.
Adjustable Base Compatible
This hybrid design provides the flexibility needed to be used on an adjustable base. Read our best adjustable bed frame roundup for more information.
Construction: What’s Inside The Avocado Green?
The Avocado is 11 inches tall and features a soft and breathable organic cotton cover. The button-tufting uses wool yarn rosettes that go from the top to the bottom of the mattress. This tufting increases the mattress’s durability because it reduces the chances that the layers will come loose or begin to bunch up over time.
- The first layer is made from 2 inches of GOLS-certified 100 percent Dunlop latex, sourced from natural, sustainable products, and processed with no additional chemicals. This all-natural material is more heat resistant than other traditional foams and aerated to increase airflow.
- The second layer is made from individually pocketed 8-inch upcycled steel coils. These coils are tailored to the pressure point and support requirements of the shoulders, hips, spine, and knees.
- The base layer is 1 inch of the Dunlop latex with a higher density than the latex used in the second layer, which makes it slightly firmer.
- The perimeter is reinforced with stronger coils to provide additional edge support.
Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Avocado mattresses are compressed and sent in a box. When you receive your mattress, keep it in the box so it’s easier to move to your bedroom.
You can then open the box, let it unroll, and remove the white plastic. There’s a second layer of plastic that I suggest you leave on until you position the mattress where you want it. Once you have it in place, remove the remaining plastic and watch it inflate.
I noticed no chemical off-gassing, probably because the mattress is made from natural materials. Nonetheless, it didn’t smell the greatest, so some people might want to let it vent for a few days.
Certifications
- MADE SAFE® Non-Toxic Certified – This rigorous screening process for toxicity prohibits the use of all known and suspected harmful substances. Unlike other certifications, it prohibits all harmful substances, including flame retardants, anywhere in the mattress. Avocado is proud to be one of the only beds in the world to meet this new gold standard of safety.
- Oeko-Tex® Certified – This product was certified by OEKO-TEX®, which evaluates textiles at all processing levels for acceptable levels of hazardous chemicals and flame retardants.
- GREENGUARD Gold – It has a GREENGUARD Gold certification that reflects the product’s ability to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards.
- eco-INSTITUT® Certified – This certification is completed by a lab in Germany with 30 years of experience in the mattress industry, which signifies that the company has gone above and beyond to ensure levels of hazardous chemicals are well below safety regulation requirements.
- GOTS-certified – The cotton in the cover is GOTS-certified, which means the cotton meets the international third-party standard to be certified organic. The second layer and tufting yarn are made from GOTS-certified wool.
- GOLS-certified – The latex is certified by GOLS, which means it meets international standards for organic latex materials.

Avocado Green Mattress FAQs
Is the Avocado mattress organic?
The Avocado mattress is organic and features eco-friendly, sustainable materials. It has multiple certifications, including the GOLS certification for latex and GOTS for cotton. All three models have organic wool, which also has a GOTS certification.
Does the Avocado mattress have a weight limit?
According to Avocado, the Green mattress can handle up to 700 pounds. This should be enough to handle most people, including co-sleepers.
Does the Avocado mattress come in different firmness options?
The regular version of the Avocado Green mattress has three firmness options. The Standard model I tested falls at 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale. According to Avocado, the ones with pillow tops and box tops should feel softer, at around 6 and 4 out of 10, respectively.
Do Avocado mattresses smell?
I didn’t notice unpleasant off-gassing typical for bed-in-a-box mattresses, but the overall smell wasn’t great anyway. It doesn’t smell like chemicals because it has eco-friendly materials, but it doesn’t smell the greatest either.

My Verdict of the Avocado Green Mattress
The Avocado Green is a perfect example of a well-made mattress that performs well in nearly all categories consumers find important. It has a lot to offer if you look past its lack of motion isolation. Add to this its lengthy trial, warranty, and white glove delivery, and the whole thing gets even better.
The higher price is a potential drawback, but considering the longevity you should get out of it, it might save you in the long run. Plus, this is a luxury, eco-friendly bed, and the price reflects that.
The Avocado Green should work well for most people, except couples in which one person is a restless sleeper, along with lightweight side sleepers.
The Avocado mattress earned an impressive 4.3 out of 5 overall.
