Best Smart Beds

Smart beds utilize advanced technology to help boost the quality of your sleep. You’ve probably already heard of sleep trackers, and yes, some smart beds can do the same kind of monitoring. But these mattresses don’t stop there—they can also change their firmness levels, regulate the surrounding temperature, and even help with snoring.

Because these products are still relatively new, it can be tough to pinpoint the best smart beds on the market. But some brands have done better than others at executing on the promise of a virtual sleeping assistant. We’ve created this guide to share the best smart beds we’ve encountered so far.

Our Pick for The Best Smart Mattress

The Saatva Solaire earned our top pick due to its pressurized air chamber, allowing you to customize your bed’s firmness. Saatva also offers a 365-night sleep trial and free white glove delivery.

How We Test the Best Smart Mattresses

At Sleep Advisor, our team of mattress experts review all sorts of sleep products. Our diverse cast of testers features a variety of sleeping preferences ranging from position to body type, which results in a complete evaluation of how a mattress performs.

We test a wide breadth of performance categories, including (but certainly not limited to), firmness, feel, support, and bounce. For smart mattresses, we have to get, well, smarter! To craft this comprehensive list, we evaluated all the usual criteria, plus a few extra. More on that below.

Methodology Image- Sleep Advisor
Julia Forbes, our lead product tester, testing mattresses in our mattress facility.

What We Look For in a Smart Mattress

Adjustability

Whether it’s adjustable firmness or a frame that’ll raise your head or feet, a smart mattress should do something that allows you to customize your sleeping environment. This is an upgrade from your typical “boring” bed, after all.

Ease of use

Of course, you don’t want a smart bed that you have no idea how to use. Most smart mattresses are controlled through some kind of remote, app, or even valves or buttons on the side of the bed itself. We want to make sure that user experience is friendly—your sleep should be made easier with a smart mattress, not more difficult.

Fair price point

The most notable thing about a smart bed is often the price. They can cost up to thousands of dollars more than your regular mattress, so it’s important to judge whether or not you’re getting the most bang for your buck. We’ll let you know what our call is, so you can make your own.

Why the Saatva Solaire Earned Best Smart Bed for Back Pain

If your current mattress isn’t doing much to alleviate back pain, the Saatva Solaire could be a game-changer. This smart bed is touted as one of the most precise adjustable mattresses on the market, thanks to the many vulcanized air chambers inside it that inflate and deflate to change its firmness.

A remote control modifies the pressure in the air chambers and enables you to choose from 50 discrete firmness levels. With this much customization—and separate remotes for each side of the larger models—the Solaire accommodates all types of sleepers. Those with back pain should especially appreciate having this much control over the feel of the bed.

Pros
Luxury touches – As if the adjustable air chambers weren’t enough, this bed also features layers that would feel luxurious inside any mattress, let alone a smart bed. They include a plush pillow top, a zoned latex layer, and a layer of gel-infused memory foam. The cover and the latex layer both have lumbar-specific zones that give this sensitive region added support.
White glove delivery – Setting up a heavy mattress isn’t the best idea if you’re contending with back pain. With a Solaire purchase, Saatva provides complimentary white glove delivery, which means a team of professionals will do all the heavy lifting.
Cons
No cooling or sleep-tracking smart features – This bed doesn’t have any smart elements that control the temperature or provide insights about your sleep patterns.
Needs some time to get fully set up – When you inflate the air chambers inside the Solaire for the first time, they may need up to two days to expand fully. The chambers may then take up to a week to calibrate properly, but should operate at peak precision afterwards.

What Makes the Saatva Solaire a Smart Bed?

  • 50 firmness options per side – In models that are queen-sized or larger, the Solaire has two remotes that control each side of the mattress separately. Your partner can choose a preferred firmness that might differ dramatically from yours, but you’ll both be able to sleep soundly after finding that 1 setting out of 50 that feels amazing.
  • Remembers your preferred firmness – The Solaire’s remotes have a memory setting so that the bed can quickly return to your favorite firmness level.
  • Quiet and protected inflation system – The air chambers inside the Solaire adjust quietly, with the hoses and inflation system hidden inside the mattress itself. These components are also guarded from above by a dedicated moisture barrier.

Our Take: “With the adjustable firmness, this mattress is anywhere between a 4 and 7 on [our firmness] scale. This makes it a versatile option for all kinds of body types and sleeping positions.” – Michael, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Solaire

On Saatva’s website, the reviews for the Saatva Solaire are overwhelmingly positive, coming in at 4.8 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the Saatva Solaire mattress for its adjustable firmness settings but may find its price point to be higher than expected.

Why the Sleep Number c4 Earned Best Affordable Smart Mattress

Sleep Number is perhaps one of the most recognizable names in the smart mattress market, and for good reason. Their iconic Sleep Number system allows for 20 customizable firmness options. The Sleep Number c4 is the most advanced of the “Classic” line, a set of beds designed to provide smart sleep without needless expense. Thus, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a smart bed on a budget.

The c4 has everything you could want in a smart bed, from adjustable firmness to the brand’s useful SleepIQ® tech, which allows you to track (and improve!) your night’s sleep. It also has two separate air chambers on either side of the bed, so you can set different firmnesses for you and your sleeping partner. Since it’s on the lower end of the Sleep Number price range, it has a thinner comfort layer, but this firmer feel makes it a great choice for folks who need or prefer the extra support.

Pros
Solid edge support – The perimeter of the c4 is reinforced with foam, so the edges of the mattress can hold up pretty well when bearing weight. This way, you should be able to make full use of the bed’s surface area.
Firmer feel – This bed has a thinner comfort layer, which actually helps to give it some firmness. Thus, we think it’s a great smart bed for stomach sleepers or heavyweight folks who need the extra support.
Cons
Gap in the center – All models of this bed feature two different chambers so you and your partner can enjoy different firmnesses without compromise. Unfortunately, this also means there’s a noticeable divot between each side of the bed.
Short trial – Sleep Number only offers a 100-night trial, which is pretty short compared to the industry standard—especially for a fancy bed such as this.

What Makes the Sleep Number c4 a Smart Bed?

  • 20 different firmness levels – As we’ve mentioned, the c4 allows you to choose your individual firmness or “Sleep Number” based on your unique preferences. There are options from 0 to 100 in increments of five; the lower the number, the softer the bed feels, and higher means firmer. You can control this with the provided remote or the Sleep Number app.
  • SleepIQ® technology – Speaking of the app, a feature unique to Sleep Number beds is what’s called SleepIQ®. This technology tracks your sleep, offering insights as to how restless you were, how long you got out of bed, and the overall quality of your sleep. Based on its findings, it can help you understand why you might not be sleeping well, and offer suggestions on how to improve.
  • Automatic firmness adjustment – Something that’s really smart about the c4 is that it can actually sense your movements on the mattress surface. In order to keep you comfortable, it’ll automatically adjust the firmness of the mattress in response to changes in position.

Our Take: If you’ve always wanted a Sleep Number but gawked at the price, consider their classic line! The c4 is the most innovative of the bunch, but it still comes in at under $2,000 for a queen, and packs in all the trendy features of the higher-end models.

Customer Reviews of the Sleep Number c4 Mattress

The Sleep Number c4 mattress has over 20,000 reviews on the Sleep Number website, bringing it an approximate 4.7 out of 5 stars. Customers rave about the responsive air chambers but have gripes about the warranty and longevity of the bed’s technology.

Why the TEMPUR-Adapt® with TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base Earned Best Smart Base and Mattress Pair

If you’re looking for a luxurious and cushy bed, it’s hard to go wrong with the TEMPUR-Adapt®. An upgrade to Tempur-Pedic’s classic line of contouring mattresses, the Adapt model is great for all types of sleepers, especially those seeking relief from pressure buildup and pain.

Though the TEMPUR-Adapt® mattress isn’t a smart bed on its own, you can pair it with Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base to have it perform like one. This base boasts intuitive adjustments, massage capabilities, and even the ability to play songs through your mattress. The two are a natural fit, creating an enviable smart unit.

Pros
Seriously fancy features – The TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base ups the quality of any mattress, not just the TEMPUR-Adapt®. You’d be hard-pressed to find another base with this many neat components. Besides the ones we’ve already outlined, it also features underhead lighting, USB ports, and adjustable height.
Plenty of options – Though the TEMPUR-Adapt® mattress isn’t adjustable itself, it does come in many different firmnesses. For an added fee, you can upgrade to Soft and Firm models in the ProAdapt® line; or, stick to the two medium-firm options in the regular Adapt® line, the Medium or the Medium Hybrid.
Cons
High price – Tempur-Pedic is an iconic luxury brand that can drive a hard bargain for budget shoppers. A queen-size mattress will cost well over $2,000—and the base is about $1,900 on top of it. You can often save some money by pairing the two together, however.
Can overheat– The TEMPUR-Adapt® mattress possesses some cooling features, but we’ve found that Tempur® Material holds onto heat fairly easily. We recommend the hybrid option for better airflow.

What Makes the TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base So Smart?

  • Automatic snore detection – This base can sense when you’re snoring and will automatically adjust to correct your posture and open your airway.
  • Sleeptracker-AI® app monitoring – This technology will analyze your behavior, sleep patterns, and bedroom environment to help you improve your rest. Its data and settings are all controlled through an app on your smartphone.
  • Wave Form™ massage – The TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base offers two massage zones (at the head and the feet) at three different levels of intensity, powered by soundwaves.
  • SoundScape™ mode – Thanks to this smart base, you can actually play music up through your mattress. Pick out a soothing playlist and let it lull you to sleep.

Our Take: “You can choose between a foam or hybrid version of this bed—both medium-firm, both work well for all sleeping positions.” – Loren Bullock, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

Customer Reviews of the TEMPUR-Adapt® with TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart base

On the Tempur-pedic website, this mattress is rated 4.6 out of 5 stars. Customers appreciate the TEMPUR-Adapt® with TEMPUR-Ergo® Smart Base for its advanced adaptability and comfort features, but some find the overall cost quite high, especially when adding the smart base.

Other Smart Mattresses We Tested

While these mattresses didn’t make our list, each of these highlighted beds are great fits for people looking for a smart bed. Check out our featured recommendations that our testers reviewed below.

What is Smart Bed Technology?

The first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word “smart bed,” is a question of whether previous generations of mattresses don’t have technology in them. There are plenty of amazing beds out there. However, smart mattress technology has the potential to further revolutionize the way we sleep.

This type of technology encompasses one or more of the following features:

  • Analyze sleep patterns
  • Provide helpful information to optimize sleep
  • Actively perform useful functions to improve sleep
  • Communicate with your home appliances and lights to switch them on and off

The most basic products in this category do little more than track your sleeping activity and give you a report in the morning. By tracking your sleep and receiving suggestions on how to optimize your sleep each night, the theory is that you’ll be able to make improvements and get a better night of rest.

But what if you want a bed that actually helps you sleep better? This is where the newer generations of smart mattresses enter the picture, and these brands may just be the future of sleep.

Read More: Apple Smart Mattress – The Future of Mattress Technology

Is Smart Bed Technology Right for You?

Most people would agree that a good night of rest is better than a bad one. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes reports that 40 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorder, and another 20 million have occasional sleepless nights.

The reality is that busy schedules and stress make it harder than ever to get the rest we need. If you’re willing to invest a few extra bucks on a mattress to get a better night of sleep, then you’ll probably wonder how you ever survived without a smart bed.

One thing to keep in mind: you will need an internet connection for some of these beds to work.

Smart Bed vs Adjustable Bed

If you don’t want to spring for the whole tricked-out smart bed, an adjustable mattress is an easy way to enhance your current sleeping arrangement. Adding a highly rated adjustable bed frame to an existing mattress allows you to change the position of your head and feet, sometimes with extra bonus features like massage, speakers, or snore detection.

If your current bed doesn’t work with the base you want, you can also purchase a regular mattress for an adjustable bed. Even purchasing these two together may cost less than the thousands of dollars you’ll have to fork over for a full-blown smart mattress.

Smart Bed Buying Considerations

Sleep Tracker

You no longer have to enroll in an expensive laboratory study to track your sleep. With an intelligent mattress, you’ll be able to monitor your movement, environmental factors, and even some of your biological functions.

Depending on the brand you choose, you’ll be able to track a number of the following:

  • The time you get into bed
  • When you fall asleep
  • How long it took to fall asleep
  • When you wake up, as well as when you get out of bed
  • The amount of time spent in deep and light sleep
  • How often you wake up during the night
  • Sleeping positions and frequency of switching
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing cycle
  • Body temperature
  • Room and bed surface temperature
  • Ambient light

Each night your mattress (depending on the model) will give you a “sleep score” and provide tips on what you can do to improve.

Firmness

This feature is only available in more advanced models, but can be well worth the investment.
It works by adjusting the firmness level of the mattress depending on your unique preferences, and it can automatically adjust itself throughout the night.

For example, it can be set to automatically become firmer when you switch from sleeping on your side to your back. Or if you have an injury and want the bed to be softer for a few days, you’d be able to adjust that as well.

Temperature Control

If you sleep with a partner who has vastly different temperature preferences than you, then this feature could end up saving your relationship. This feature works by allowing each partner to set their desired temperature for the surface of the mattress.

Adjustable Bases

An adjustable base is certainly nothing new. The first commercially available electric models showed up in mattress showrooms in the early 1980s. However, remote control and Bluetooth options are relatively new inventions. Some brands even offer the ability to automatically adjust upwards when they detect snoring.

App Integration

Being able to control your bed through your smartphone, tablet or Amazon’s Alexa device is another wondrous feature of smart mattresses. Smart devices have user-friendly interfaces that not only allow for sleep tracking, they also let users set timers for temperature control.

Some apps also integrate “If This Then That” (IFTTT), which is a logic-based technology that lets you set up rules for your bed to follow while you’re asleep. For example, you may want to create a rule that says if the room temperature gets below a certain point, raise the temperature of the mattress.

Smart Alarms

This type of alarm is much more adaptive than a standard alarm clock that blares loudly at a set time each morning. Instead, this can be set to wake you up during your lightest stage of sleep, which means you’ll be able to get more easily and resist pressing snooze.

Find Out More: Best Smart Alarm Clocks

Budget

As with any new technology, the price tends to start high, and as more companies enter the market, the price will naturally drop. There are a couple of manufacturers that have managed to produce quality smart mattresses for under $1,000, but most brands tend to run between $1,000 and $2,500 or more.

And that’s only for a queen-sized mattress. If you’re looking at a king, the prices will be even higher.

If you’re looking for an affordable, but high quality mattress without the smart technology, check out our Best Affordable Mattresses.

Trial Period & Warranty

Humans spend around one third of their lives in bed, so it’s imperative that you’re satisfied with the mattress you buy. Most companies allow you to try their mattress risk-free for around 90 to 100 days. Then, if you don’t like it, you can return it, or have it donated for a refund.

The warranty, by contrast, doesn’t allow you to get a refund simply for not liking the bed. Rather, there has to be something wrong with it, like a manufacturer defect or excessive sagging over a set number of years. Most companies offer anywhere from a 10 to 20-year warranty, though there are brands that offer a lifetime warranty.

One thing to pay close attention to as you shop for smart mattresses: not all companies consider this new technology to be covered under warranty. Other companies will cover it, but only for a couple of years.

Learn More: How To Return a Mattress

Different Smart Bed Systems

You don’t necessarily need to buy a whole new mattress to take advantage of smart mattress technology. There are alternatives. Some companies that make toppers, covers, and even pillows that integrate some of the smart features. That way, you can test the waters of this technology without buying a whole new bed.

Learn More: Sleep Number Competitors

Mattress Topper

If you’re looking for a mattress topper that utilizes this technology, you’ll have to wait a bit longer as none exists quite yet. There are electric, digitally controlled options, but you’ll need to get a smart plug like a Belkin WeMo plug to be able to connect it to a smartphone or Alexa.

However, there are mattress covers that you can get instead that already have this functionality built-in.

You may be wondering, “what is the difference between a mattress topper and a mattress cover?

Saatva Graphite Mattress Topper
An photo taken by Julia, our lead product tester, when testing a Saatva mattress topper.

A lot of people use these terms interchangeably, but a mattress topper is more of a pad that people use to make their mattress softer or firmer. A cover, on the other hand, is more of a protective layer, and it sometimes has padding to make a mattress more comfortable.

Mattress Cover

The right smart mattress cover can do everything its bed counterpart can do, but they do it at a fraction of the price. This is because it packs all of the technology of the mattress in a slim fitting cover.

It will include an electronic hub that connects to the mattress and uses Wi-Fi to perform all the tasks you’d expect, like sleep tracking, temperature color, and communicating with your appliances.

WiFi Heated Mattress Pad

This is the same thing as the mattress toppers and covers described above, but you can use Bluetooth connectivity to turn on heat settings.

Smart Pillow

There are low-tech options that label themselves as “smart pillows.” These typically include multiple layers that allow you to customize the height and firmness of your pillow. There are more robust options, though.

New companies have emerged within the last couple of years that pack all of the smart bed functionality into the size of a single pillow. These pillows provide sleep trackers, sleep analysis a vibrating snore alarm, and IFTTT technology that integrates with smart phone and Amazon devices.

Smart Mattress FAQs

Can a smart mattress make itself in the morning?

This is so close to becoming a reality! A couple of years ago, two companies ran successful crowdfunding campaigns for beds that made themselves within a few seconds of you getting out of bed.

Now, these companies are in the final stages of production, and they should release their smart mattresses to the mass market any day now. Stay tuned!

Will my smart system make me coffee?

Surprisingly, yes! Many have this functionality and these smart systems can detect when you get out of bed and start the coffee machine. By the time you make your way into the kitchen, there’ll be a fresh, steaming cup, just for you!

Sleep IQ is a system developed by Sleep Number, one of the top innovators in the mattress industry. The SleepIQ system can accurately measure your heart rate without the use of wires or any obtrusive equipment.

We won’t get too technical, but essentially, they use something called “ballistocardiography,” which measures ballistic forces on the heart and creates a graph based on those measurements. It measures the subtle rise and fall that occurs from the blood flow associated with each heartbeat.

This same process is also used to track motion and breathing rates.
